There is still controversy regarding the active role of striated intramural and periurethral muscles and their relative share of function for urinary continence under stress conditions. To evaluate the function of the periurethral muscles, we subjected a dog model to the physiologic stress condition created by sneezing. Simultaneous measurements of intravesical and three urethral pressures were obtained in the intact urinary tract and in a noncontractile substitute urethra, which was pulled through the pelvic floor and studied with and without additional pelvic floor suspension. The data clearly confirm the active role of striated sphincteric muscles for continence under stress conditions. …

Tratamiento de la fractura subcapital de cadera mediante osteosintesis percutanea

The consolidation in 214 subcapital fractures of the hip treated with osteosyntesis with three AO cancellous screws are reported. The patients' average age is 72'5 and the osteoporosis degree is obvious in 89% of the cases. In each fracture the Garden and Pawel's c1assification and Lamare's displacement are considered as well as the reduction (according to Garden's «acceptable reduction» criteria). The rates of complication are: infection (0'4%), loss of reduction (15'6%), non union (10'28%) and necrosis (16%). The statistic evaluation is carried out through the «ChiSquare» test. Sinovitis transitoria de la cadera : estudio escintilografico

Los autores han explorado por medio de escintilografías, realizadas con Pirofosfato de Te 99, cuarenta y dos casos de Sinovitis Transitoria de la cadera en niños comprendidos entre los dos y los siete años de edad. Las exploraciones se realizaron al inicio de la clínica y posteriormente a un ritmo mensual hasta la normalización. De los resultados de este estudio, se desprende que existe un aumento inicial en la captación de Te 99 en el área de la cadera afectada. Este aumento inicial se normaliza con el paso del tiempo. Estos hallazgos se interpretan como la demostración de que la Sinovitis Transitoria de la cadera es un proceso inflamatorio regional que se resuelve espontáneamente.

The musculoskeletal capacity of 60 women and 69 men, average age 52.3 +/- 3.7 years was determined, including measurements of anthropometry, maximal isometric trunk flexion and extension, sit-ups, isometric hand grip strength and back mobility. According to the job and to cluster analysis, the subjects were divided into three dominating work groups; physical, mental, and mixed groups. The results showed significant differences in right hand grip strength of the women and in the number of sit-ups by men among the three work groups (p less than 0.05). Light-Induced Excited Spin State Trapping in Iron(II) Complexes

In the course of our studies on the thermally induced high spin (HS) ↔ low spin (LS) transition in iron(II) complexes /1/, \({\!^5{\text{T}}_2}_{\text{g}}\) ↔ \({\!^1{\text{A}}_1}_{\text{g}}\) in the approximation of Oh symmetry, we have observed in 1984 a new photophysical effect /2/: If, at sufficiently low temperature, the solid spin crossover complex is irradiated with green light into the \({\!^1{\text{A}}_1}\)→ \({\!^1{\text{T}}_1}\) ligand field absorption band, the thermodynamically stable LS state can be converted to the metastable HS state and trapped with practically infinite lifetime. We have called this unusual phenomenon “Light-Induced Excited Spin State Trapping (LIESST)”.

Operationsverfahren zur kontinenten Harnableitung, der Blasenaugmentation oder zum Blasenersatz haben in den letzten Jahren eine Renaissance erfahren. Vorteil der 1983 vorgestellten Technik des Mainz-Pouch [6] ist, das sie in standardisiertem Vorgehen fur alle drei genannten Indikationen geeignet ist. Seit 1983 wurden an der Universitatsklinik Mainz 79 Eingriffe zur kontinenten Harnableitung (n = 39), zur Blasenaugmentation (n = 28) und zum Blasenersatz (n = 12) durchgefuhrt. Bei der In dikation zur Operation standen ein funktioneller oder morphologischer Blasenverlust (n = 43) oder die Zystektomie wegen Blasenkarzinom (n = 31) im Vordergrund.

This paper gives an approach to pseudodifferential operators on noncompact manifolds using a suitable class of weighted symbols and Sobolev spaces introduced by H.O. Cordes on ℙ. Here, these spaces are shown to be invariant under certain changes of coordinates. It is therefore possible to transfer them to manifolds with a compatible structure.

Blood Flow, Vascular Resistance and Oxygen Availability in Malignant Tumours upon Intravenous Flunarizine

Tumour blood flow, an important determinant of the efficacy of presently available nonsurgical cancer treatments, significantly increased following a single I.V. injection of the calcium antagonist flunarizine. At a dose of 1 mg/kg, tumour blood flow increased approximately by 28% without a significant change in mean arterial blood pressure. The flow increase was paralleled by a similar improvement of the O2 availability to the cancer cells. The data suggest that flunarizine may provide a means of improving delivery of antineoplastic agents to tumours. Furthermore, flunarizine may also enhance the effectiveness of irradiation by increasing tumour oxygenation.

Electrochemical study of dinuclear ruthenium(II)—arene compounds: Electrogeneration of Ru(II)—Ru(I) species

Abstract The preparation and characterization of Ru(II)—arene compounds [{RuCl2(p-cym)}2(μ-L-L)] where p-cym = p-MeC6H4CHMe2; and L-L = diphenylphosphinomethane (I), 1,1′-bisdiphenylphosphinoferrocene (II), pyrazine (III) and 4,4′-bipyridine (IV), are described. Electrochemical data for these compounds obtained by cyclic voltammetry and coulometry are reported. The electrochemical reduction of compounds I or II yields ruthenium(O) species. However, compounds III or IV containing ligands with delocalized Π orbitals undergo one-electron reduction. The ESR signal detected during the electrolysis of compounds III or IV is consistent with one delocalized electron through the whole dinuclear unit.
