Laser resonant ionization of plutonium

1985

Resonance ionization mass spectrometry (RIMS) has been tested for the isotope-selective determination of trace amounts of plutonium. An atomic beam is formed by evaporating plutonium atoms from a rhenium-filament heated to 1800 °C. The radiation of a pulsed dye laser excites the atoms in a two-photon process (λ=595.2 nm) followed by photoionization of the excited atoms. Mass selectivity is obtained by use of a time-of-flight spectrometer. A resonant signal of239Pu was measured with 1013 atoms deposited on the filament.

Congenital renal arteriovenous malformation (aneurysmal type) in childhood.

1985

We report on a 9-year-old boy with a congenital renal arteriovenous fistula of the aneurysmal type, a form previously not observed in childhood. The clinical picture was unusual with severe arterial hypertension, excessive polyuria and decreased levels of serum sodium and chloride as main signs. Clinical and biochemical findings normalised after nephrectomy of the kidney involved.

Alkohol und IgA in der Niere

1985

Light quark condensates from QCD sum rules

1985

The light quark condensates have been determined by two different methods: By Laplace transformed QCD sum rules together with an improved hadronic continuum from extended PCAC and by analytic continuation by duality (ACD) of the asymptotic QCD amplitude. Both methods yield compatible results. The PCAC corrections are considerably large: for theu, d quarks near 8% and for theu, s quarks of order 60%.

Chiral anomalies in even and odd dimensions

1985

Odd dimensional Yang-Mills theories with an extra ‘topological mass” term, defined by the Chern-Simons secondary characteristic, are discussed. It is shown in detail how the topological mass affects the equal time charge commutation relations and how the modified commutation relations are related to non-abelian chiral anomalies in even dimensions. We also study the SU(3) chiral model (Wess-Zumino model) in four dimensions and we show how a gauge invariant interaction with an external SU(3) vector potential can be defined with the help of the Chern-Simons characteristic in five dimensions.

Comparative analysis of observer depression scales

1985

Abstract The Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), Bech Rafaelsen Melancholia Scale (BRMS) and Montgomery Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) are analyzed according to mean discriminatory power, internal consistency, homogeneity and transferability. The analysis was done separately in different samples of patients with depressive syndromes: a) operationally defined depressive syndrome; b) Major Depressive Disorder (RDC); c) Major Depressive Disorder, endogenous type (RDC). BRMS and MADRS were superior to HAMD in all evaluated aspects. Further, the BRMS was superior to MADRS according to the criteria of homogeneity and transferability.

Diagnostik und operative Therapie beim vesiko-renalen Reflux

1985

The SVZ plasmon

1985

The sum rule technique of Shifman, Vainshtein and Zakharov is applied to a non-relativistic many-body system, the homogeneous, degenerate electron gas. The operator product expansion for the nonrelativistic correlation function is derived and shown to be equivalent in lowest order to a moment expansion. The nonperturbative terms in this expansion characterize the interacting ground state (“vacuum”) of the system. For the electron gas they can be related to the correlation energy which is very well known. Following as close as possible the SVZ procedure the mass of the plasmon (i.e. the dispersion coefficient of the collective plasma excitation) is calculated and compared with results from c…

Comparison of the antibacterial effect of uroepithelial cells from healthy donors and children with asymptomatic bacteriuria

1985

Bacterial attachment to uroepithelial cells (UEC) and the effect of UEC on bacterial growth was investigated in 15 healthy persons and 12 patients suffering from asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) with recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI). Desquamated UEC and mannose-resistant Escherichia coli were co-cultivated for up to 90 min. While no difference in bacterial adherence was observed between healthy controls and patients, 33.4% of the bacteria attached to normal UEC were found to be dead under microscopic evaluation (acridine orange staining), whereas no killing effect could be observed in patients' UEC 5 min after the onset of incubation. This phenomenon was confirmed by investigating the…

Protoplasts fromPodospora anserina: Isolation, purification, and transformation

1985

Protoplasts fromPodospora anserina mycelium were produced using the commercially available enzyme Novozym 234. Different parameters involved in protoplast isolation were analyzed in order to establish optimal conditions, and protoplast production was notably increased. For the purification of protoplasts, several techniques based on both centrifugation and filtration were assayed, with filtration yielding the best results. Regeneration of protoplasts was studied on different media and osmostic stabilizers, and about 80% regeneration was obtained. The good physiological condition of the protoplasts produced with this method is demonstrated by the lack of cell wall and high regeneration rate …

Melatonin formation in different parts of the guinea-pig pineal complex as assessed over 24 hours.

1985

There is morphological evidence that the pineal gland is not a uniformly built organ but rather a complex. In the guinea-pig the gland is 6--7 mm in length and dumbbell-shaped, the proximal part coming into intimate contact with central commissural fibres. The aim of the present 24-hour study was to examine in male guinea-pigs whether the proximal, intermediate and distal areas of the gland are involved in melatonin formation and to compare their rhythmicities. Levels of melatonin in serum and the whole pineal gland as assessed by RIA show day/night ratios of 1 : 1.25 and 1 : 3.3, respectively. Serotonin N-acetyltransferase activity was found to exhibit ratios of 1 : 1.75 (Experiment I) and…

Evidence for extrinsic control of oesophageal primary peristalsis.

1985

AbstractThe role of both peripheral and central mechanism in the control of primary peristalsis was studied in pigeon cervical oesophagus. The results from the transection of oesophageal muscular wall and of extrinsic nerves suggest that :i) primary peristalsis is programmed centrally.ii) extrinsic motor input is carried in glossopharyngeal nerves and distributed separately at each oesophageal level through intramural neurons.iii) intramural neurons do not seem capable of propagating the peristaltic sequence irrespective of the central control.

62 patients (14 boys, 48 girls) representing 85 refluxive renal units (Grade 2-4) were investigated after successful operation for the development of further urinary tract infections (UTI) and renal scars (RS). The mean follow-up was 9.3 years. With the exception of one boy, none of the male patients developed any UTI or new RS. A similar result was obtained for about 45% of the girls. These two groups of patients presented with high-grade reflux before surgery. The remaining female patients (about 55%), however, presenting with lower-grade reflux before surgical treatment, developed further UTI as well as new RS despite surgical correction of their reflux. Scaling and mean-field-like behaviour in phase separation processes

1985

Extensive Monte Carlo calculations are used to study the still not well understood process of phase separation in binary systems. The results show that for a separation dominated by long-wavelength fluctuations a mean-field description holds in certain concentration regions. This, however, is only true for short times after the system has been brought into a non-equilibrium state. A crucial parameter is the interaction range. It determines the region and the time where the mean field description is valid. At later times the structure factor exhibits dynamical scaling. Scaling is also investigated for the metastable states. The results are applicable to polymer blends with long chains or bin…

Über polyplumbane

1985

Abstract Diplumbanes Pb 2 R 3 R′ 3 (R,R′ = Ph, o -Tol, p -Tol) have been synthesized from R 3 PbLi and R′ 3 PbCl at −60°C in THF. Mass, 13 C and 207 Pb NMR spectra of the products exhibit migrations of R, R′ in the transition state (R 3 PbLi + ClPbR′ 3 ) leading to a complex distribution of the substituents (δ( 207 Pb) with respect to PbMe 4 −70 to −95 ppm). The PbPb stretching vibration (100 to 115 cm −1 ) couples with a lattice vibration giving rise to a single intensive Raman line. The crystal structure of Pb 2 Ph 3 ( p -Tol) 3 has been determined and refined to R = 0.155. Two independent molecules are disordered and have identical distribution of the substituents Ph( p -Tol) 2 PbPbPh …

Angular distributions in quasi-fission reactions: Evidence for incomplete relaxation of the tilting mode

1985

Angular distributions of fission-like fragments have been measured for50Ti+208Pb and56Fe+208Pb collisions. Z-dependent asymmetries around Θincm= 90° preclude their interpretation in terms of compound nucleus fission with the transition state theory. Fits of the data with a simple ansatz for statistical angular momentum fluctuations (tilting) give evidence for an incomplete relaxation of the tilting mode in quasi fission reactions.

Density as a constraint and the separation of internal excitation energy in TDHF

1985

We present a fast and efficient constrained Hartree-Fock iteration scheme which constraints the complete density distribution to remain constant. The scheme is particularly suited to a coordinate- or momentum-space representation. The technique is applied to separate the collective and the internal energy in a propagating TDHF state. We study the behavior of these two energies in an16O+16O collision.

Nuclear moments and charge radii of107?111in determined by laser spectroscopy

1985

Collinear fast beam laser spectroscopy has been used to measure the hyperfine structure and isotope shift in the atomic 5s 2 5p 2 P 3/2-5s 2 6s 2 S 1/2 transition (λ=451 nm) of107–111In. Secondary beams of neutron deficient indium isotopes were prepared at the GSI on-line mass separator following fusion evaporation reactions. Magnetic dipole moments and electric quadrupole moments have been determined. The isotope shifts are discussed in terms of the change of the mean square nuclear charge radii and compared with the droplet model predictions and the deformation values calculated from the quadrupole moments.

Non-yrast level structure of135Pr

1985

Levels of135Pr populated in the (p,2n) reaction were studied using methods of in-beamγ-ray and conversion electron spectroscopy. Many low-lying positive-parity states give evidence of a deformation ofβ=0.15–0.20. The same conclusion is evident from band structures built on these positive-parity states and on theh11/2 negative-parity state. The triaxial rotor-plus-particle model reproduces quite well band structures withβ=0.20 andγ= 21°.

Experience with palliative percutaneous nephrostomy in bladder cancer patients

1985

Minimal percutaneous nephrostomy as a palliative urinary diversion was performed in 50 patients with advanced bladder cancer disease. The average survival time was 6.6 months, with 38% of the patients alive after 6 months. Although 88% of the patients died within one year, 2 (5%) are still alive after more than 2 years. Each case of palliative diversion is an individual one, with many different factors influencing the decision. Prolonging life cannot be an indication for diversion. Percutaneous nephrostomy in combination with other percutaneous techniques provides the urologist with excellent therapeutic tools to avoid surgery in such emergency situations as uremia or local tumor symptoms. …

Killer toxins in new isolates of the yeasts Hanseniaspora uvarum and Pichia kluyveri

1985

From various habitats (plant material, fruits, soil), yeasts belonging to the species of Pichia kluyveri and Hanseniaspora uvarum were isolated that showed killer activity. According to the activity spectrum against other yeasts these strains belonged to 11 different groups that were distinguishable from the killer strains K1-K10. The isoelectric points of the killer proteins were in the range of pH 3.5–3.9, the activity optimum was observed at pH 4.2–4.6. Above pH 5 and above a temperature of 25–35°C the killer proteins were inactivated.

The frontal agranular cortex and the organization of purposeful movements

1985

A critical review of the traditional concepts of cortical association and motor areas is followed by a description of the functional organization and intrinsic and extrinsic cortical connectivity of the arcuate premotor area (APA). It is concluded that the frontal cortical organization of externally triggered purposeful movements is made possible by the associative character of Brodmann's area 6 and by its peculiar pattern of intra-areal connectivity.
