SV40 transformed fibroblasts recognize the same 140 kD fibronectin chemotactic fragment as non-transformed cells

1985

SV40-virus-transformed human embryonal fibroblasts show an enhanced chemotactic response to the glycoprotein fibronectin. However, they recognize the same chemotactic active region as non-transformed fibroblasts. The result suggests that an enhancement of chemotaxis by fibroblasts which have been transformed with Simian Virus 40 is due not to the utilization of further chemotactic domains in the molecule, but to an increased sensitivity of the cells to the chemoattractant.

Electric hyperfine interaction in199Hg fluorides

1985

With the current integration technique, the Mossbauer effect on the 158 keV, 5/2−→1/2− transition in199Hg was studied using the cubic HgF2 and the tetragonal Hg2F2 as absorbers; in the latter, a quadrupole splittingeQVzz=}- 9.0(2) mm/s was observed. Electron densities were calculated with the self-consistent-charge-extended-Hueckel-molecular-orbital method and δ〈r2〉=(3.26±0.11) fm2 derived. From the quadrupole splitting and the calculation, an effective antishielding factor almost twice that of the neutral Hg atom is derived.

The filter apparatus of Rana temporaria and Bufo bufo larvae (Amphibia, Anura)

1985

In larvae of Rana temporaria and Bufo bufo the location of filter apparatus within the larval organization, the arrangement of the morphological parts as branchial food trap, ventral velum, and filter rows, as well as their surface anatomy, are similar to that of other species of Orton's larval type IV. The means by which mucous with its entrapped food particles is transported from the filter rows to the esophagus is finally resolved. The dorsally positioned ciliary cushion extends far ventrally between the filter plates. From their contact with the filter rows, the cilia transport the mucous to Kratochwill's caudally positioned “Flimmerrinne” and from there to the esophagus. The original c…

Pump currents generated by the purified Na+K+-ATPase from kidney on black lipid membranes.

1985

The transport activity of purified Na+K+-ATPase was investigated by measuring the electrical pump current induced on black lipid membranes. Discs containing purified Na+K+-ATPase from pig kidney were attached to planar lipid bilayers in a sandwich-like structure. After the addition of only microM concentrations of an inactive photolabile ATP derivative [P3-1-(2-nitro)phenylethyladenosine 5'-triphosphate, caged ATP] ATP was released after illumination with u.v.-light, which led to a transient current in the system. The transient photoresponse indicates that the discs and the underlying membrane are capacitatively coupled. Stationary pump currents were obtained after the addition of the H+, N…

Cyanophyte calcification morphotypes and depositional environments (Alenquer oncolite, upper Kimmeridgian?, Portugal)

1985

Terrigenous red siliciclastics of Upper Kimmeridgian(?) to Portlandian age around Alenguer, Portugal, comprise a narrow level of oncoid-bearing limestones. Oncoid cortices are composed of cyanophytes which appear in different calcification morphotypes according to changing physico-chemical parameters. Recent examples reveal that in most cases each calcification morphotype is related to one single species or one defined association. Hence, the characteristic calcification patterns are mostly biologically rather than abiogenetically controlled. Oncoid shapes, sizes and arrangement, on the other hand, are mainly determined by the hydraulic parameter within the depositional environment.

Cholinesterase activity and exposure time to acetylcholine as factors influencing the muscarinic inhibition of [3H]-noradrenaline overflow from guine…

1985

Guinea-pig isolated atria were incubated and loaded with [3H]-noradrenaline. The release of 3H and of [3H]-noradrenaline was induced by field stimulation (6-9 trains of 150 pulses at 5 Hz). The stimulation-evoked overflows of 3H and of [3H]-noradrenaline were determined. In the absence of an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, acetylcholine (12 min preincubation before nerve stimulation, up to 10 microM) failed to inhibit the evoked [3H]-noradrenaline overflow. In the presence of atropine, an increase by acetylcholine of evoked release was observed in the same atria. In contrast, the selective muscarinic agonist methacholine significantly decreased the evoked overflow. The inhibition was ant…

Analysis of the static and dynamic behaviour of a magnetic liquid seal

1985

A rotating shaft seal, using ferrofluid between biconical truncated magnetic poles, is analysed both in static and dynamic conditions. After solving Laplace's equation and allowing an approximate expression for the magnetic potential, the magnetic forces acting on the working fluid are obtained. It is thus possible to determine the baric field existing in static conditions and the highest tolerable pressure jump. In the case of dynamic working the flow is schematized by two interior regions, where the azimuthal velocity prevails, and four boundary layers on the walls, where meridional transport of fluid takes place. Assuming laminar motion, by means of a perturbation procedure it is possibl…

Trace detection of plutonium by three-step photoionization with a laser system pumped by a copper vapor laser

1985

Laser photoionization has been used to detect trace amounts of plutonium. A high sensitivity and selectivity has been achieved by applying three-step excitation and ionization of the plutonium atoms with high pulse-repetition rates and additional mass determination by time-of-flight measurements. A laser system was developed which consists of a copper vapor laser pumping three dye lasers simultaneously. Samples containing between 1010 and 1012 atoms of239Pu on Re filaments were measured yielding strong resonance signals with maximum ion count rates of several kHz at a vanishingly low background. A detection efficiency of 10−7 was determined allowing the detection of about 108 plutonium atom…

The M/G/1/1 queue with repeated attempts and different types of feedback effects

1985

Queueing systems with repeated attempts have wide practical use in designing switching networks and computer systems. The model presented in this paper not only takes into account repetitions by congestion but also considers the feedback effects from all types of failures in establishing a connection. A semi-regenerative analysis is applied in order to determine the characteristics of the underlying queueing process. Bedienungssysteme mit wiederholten Versuchen sind von groβem praktischen Nutzen bei der Bemessung von Vermittlungseinrichtungen und Computersystemen. Cyclic esters of aliphatic diacids with pyrocatechol and hydroquinone

1985

Cyclic esters of adipic acid, suberic acid and sebacic acid were prepared by reaction of the acid dichlorides and pyrocatechol or hydroquinone in benzene under high dilution conditions. While only the cyclic dimers could be obtained from hydroquinone, pyrocatechol formed cyclic monomers as well as cyclic dimers (and also a cyclic dimer with succinic acid). The structure of all compounds was confirmed by1H-NMR- and mass spectra. The crystal structures of the pyrocatechol esters were determined by single crystal X-ray analysis.

Localization of small islet-cell tumors. Preoperative and intraoperative ultrasound, computed tomography, arteriography, digital subtraction angiogra…

1985

A total of 42 islet-cell tumors were examined between 1972 and 1984. Problems of localization were only encountered in 31 tumors less than 2 cm in diameter. Of 31 small tumors, 27 were correctly localized using a combined diagnostic approach: ultrasound was successful in 12/20 tumors, CT in 9/21, angiography in 20/31, intraarterial digital subtraction angiography in 1/2, and pancreatic venous sampling in 13/16. The smallest tumor found by ultrasound and CT was 7 mm in diameter. Intraoperative ultrasound demonstrated all 9 insulinomas examined. Currently, the most useful techniques for localizing small islet-cell tumors are ultrasound, CT, and angiography. CT is particularly useful for tumor…

Irrigation Agrosystems in Eastern Spain: Roman or Islamic Origins?

1985

Abstract The long-standing controversy concerning Islamic diffusion of cultivars and irrigation technology to Spain is approached by comparing Roman and Islamic agrosystems at the general, regional, and local levels. We describe the Roman intensification of the older Mediterranean agrosystem and then examine the subsequent agricultural and demographic decline between A.D. 250 and 800. The operation, organization, and evolution of large, intermediate, and small-scale irrigation are analyzed in seven case studies from the Valencia region of eastern Spain. The largest systems were refurbished in Islamic times, but during a period when Berber and Arab settlement was thin and acculturation of th…

Sonographic biometry in obstructive uropathy of children: preoperative diagnosis and postoperative monitoring.

1985

Renal sonography was performed in 92 children with obstructive uropathy or vesicoureteral reflux preoperatively and at follow-up. Renal volume and the anteroposterior diameter of the renal pelvis proved to be the most reliable morphometric criteria for objective sonographic staging and follow-up of urinary tract obstruction. If transient obstruction occurred after uncomplicated antireflux ureterovesico-plasties (n = 41), it lasted at most 4 weeks. Kidneys with transient postoperative ureterovesical junction obstruction (n = 21) reverted to normal sonographic pattern within 4 weeks following ureteral reimplantation. In cases of ureteropelvic junction obstruction (n = 30), it took up to 6 mon…

How can skin conductance responses increase over trials while skin resistance responses decrease?

1985

It is shown that the opposite trends over trials for conductance and resistance response magnitudes that have been found in recent experiments can be explained entirely by the mathematical relationship between conductance and resistance. Two conditions have to be satisfied for such opposite trends to occur: (1) a substantial increase in conductance level over the course of an experiment, and (2) a certain increase in conductance response magnitudes. The opposition in trends, being due solely to the mathematical relationship between conductance and resistance, should not be eliminated by some “correction” procedure. Instead, conductance should be taken as the appropriate variable. Also, no c…

The effect of sex antidiscriminatory legislation on the variability of female employment in Britain

1985

This paper examines the variability of female employment in the 1970s. It is based on data from the New Earnings Survey so that the behaviour of employment in the manual–nonmanual and manufacturing–nonmanufacturing sectors can be studied separately. At an aggregate level the results are compared to those derived using data from the Department of Employment, to ensure that the results are not simply the product of possible sampling variation of the New Earnings Survey. The findings of this paper, though far from conclusive, indicate that female employment vis-a-vismale employment became more stable after 1976. There may be many reasons for the decrease in relative variability of female emplo…

Development of T cell clones reactive to two defined restriction elements in conjunction with two defined epitopes of antigen

1985

A previously described pig insulin (PI)-specific T cell line of (B10 X B10.BR)F1 origin was assayed for its reactivity with species variants of insulin in the presence of antigen-presenting cells (APC) of various H-2 haplotypes. In addition to its reactivity with PI and bovine insulin (BI) in the context of syngeneic F1 (H-2b X k)-APC, a weak cross-reactivity was observed with parental B10 (H-2b)-APC and BI but not PI. The cross-reactive cells could be selected out by several restimulations with the combination of BI and B10-APC. From the resulting, strongly cross-reactive T cell line several interleukin 2-dependent sublines were developed which did not require antigen-specific restimulatio…

1985

The cytoskeletons of various human neuroendocrine (NE) tumors were analyzed immunohistochemically using antibodies against intermediate-filament (IF) proteins as well as by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis of proteins from microdissected tissue samples. All of the tumors studied were found to contain cytokeratin filaments and are therefore referred to as 'NE tumors of the epithelial type'. In addition, neurofilaments were found in most cutaneous and some pulmonary NE tumors, as well as in medullary carcinomas of the thyroid and in pancreatic islet cell tumors. The neurofilament staining was frequently concentrated in cytoplasmic IF aggregates. Gel-electrophoretic analyses showed that all…

The effects of LSD in the guinea-pig ileum

1985

The effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) on acetylcholine release and on smooth muscle tone were studied in the myenteric plexus-longitudinal muscle preparation of the guinea pig. LSD (0.01-10 microM) depressed in a concentration-dependent manner the electrically-evoked [3H]-acetylcholine outflow from strips preincubated with [3H]-choline. The maximal effect was a 45% inhibition by 1 microM LSD. The spontaneous outflow was not affected. Metitepine competitively antagonized (pA2 8.0) the LSD-induced reduction of the evoked outflow. Tolazoline and mepyramine did not affect the inhibitory action of LSD. The contractions in response to electrical stimulation were enhanced by 34% in the p…

A suggested role for secondary flow in the stimulation of the cochlear hair cell

1985

The mammalian Corti organ and the reptilian basilar papilla are structures with a curved surface, which vibrate in a fluid medium. This paper is concerned with the role played by the geometric shape of these organs in cochlear hydrodynamics. In association with vibrating structures such as these organs, it can be expected that a stationary current will be initiated due to a nonlinear phenomenon in the boundary layer known as secondary flow. This phenomenon may explain the source of the mechanical nonlinearity in the cochlea.

Nonlinear optical self diffraction effects for a light beam in a liquid crystalline polymer in its isotropic fluid state was observed. This effect is characterized by the absence of a threshold intensity, a diffraction pattern that does not depend on the polarization of the reading beam relative to that of the writing beam and which cannot be disturbed by transversally applied static electrical fields. This effect is attributed to a thermally induced spatial refractive index modulation. The time constants of the response are of the order of ms.

Different patterns of cytokeratin expression in the normal epithelia of the upper respiratory tract

1985

The distribution and type of cytokeratins present in the normal human epithelia of the nasopharynx, oropharynx, tongue, palatine tonsil, epiglottis, vocal cord, and laryngeal ventricle were studied using immunohistochemical techniques and by gel electrophoresis of cytoskeletal proteins microdissected from frozen tissues. Noncornifying stratified epithelia covering the oropharynx, tongue, surface of the palatine tonsil, pharyngeal surface of the epiglottis, and vocal cord were all found to contain cytokeratins nos. 4, 5, 6, 13, 14, and 15, together with minor amounts of cytokeratin no. 19, i.e., a pattern similar to that previously reported for esophageal epithelium. Ultrastructure of a muscle spindle-analogous receptor organ in the mandible of Oncopeltus fasciatus (Insecta, Heteroptera) with remarks on the homolo…

1985

A non-ciliary muscle receptor organ in the first mandibular retractor muscle of Oncopeltus fasciatus is described. The organ consists of two specialized muscle fibres of the first retractor, which are embedded in a thickened layer of connective tissue. The sensory innervation is supplied by three multiterminal sense cells sending several dendrites to the receptor muscle fibres. ‘Naked’ dendritic terminals are attached to the muscle surface or connective tissue fibrils. The far-reaching analogy of the receptor to the intrafusal chain-fibres of vertebrate muscle spindles is remarkable. The existence of a muscle receptor organ in the first mandibular retractor may serve as an argument in favor…
