Cyclische chirale triarylborane mit einer B←N-Bindung
1985
Abstract The reaction of ortho-lithiated N,N-dimethyl-1-arylethyl-amines with triphenyl- boron leads, with elimination of phenyllithium, to (R)-(−)-2,2,3-trimethyl-1,1-diphenyl -1H-2-azonia-1-borata-indene (1), 2,3-dihydro-1,1,2-trimethyl-3,3-diphenyl- 1H-2-azonia-3-borata-benz[e]indene (2) and 2,3-dihydro-2,2,3-trimethyl-1,1-diphenyl -1H-2-azonia-1-borata-benz[e]indene (3) with a strongB←N bond. 1, 2 and 3 are stable against oxygen, water and alcohols. Triarylboron compounds sensitive to the same reagents are formed by the reaction of triphenylboron with some aryllithium compounds substituted with electron-donating groups.
Lysosomal alterations in heart and liver of mice treated with doxorubicin.
1985
This study was carried out to evaluate the influence of long-term treatment with doxorubicin (DXR) (4mg/kg IV for 5 weeks) on heart and liver lysosomes of mice. We evaluated the variations in both total and "sedimentable" enzyme activity of cathepsin D, which is the major endopeptidase of myocites and probably involved in physiologic and pathologic degradation of actomyosin and mitochondria, and that of acid phosphatase, which is more prominent in interstitial cells. Our results show that marked changes occur in both total and sedimentable enzyme activity of cathepsin D in the heart of treated animals and to a lesser extent in the liver. In contrast, no modification of either total or sedim…
NMR studies on [Rh(η6-arene)(P(OPH)3)2]ClO4 in the presence of acetone-d6. Arene dissociation and dynamic behaviour of the solvent complex
1985
Abstract Dissociation of the complexes [Rh(η 6 -arene)L 2 ]ClO 4 (arene = mesitylene (Ia), toluene (Ib) and benzene (Ic); L = P(OPh) 3 ) with loss of the arene ligand in CD 2 Cl 2 / acetone- d 6 (95/5 mol/mol) has been studied by 31 P NMR spectroscopy; for initial 0.025 M concentrations of degrees of dissociation were 0.23, 0.33 and 0.85, respectively. The dissociations were first-order, with half-lifes of 31 (Ia), 1.2 (Ib) and 0.7 (Ic) h. The solvent complex [Rh(acetone) m L 2 ]ClO 4 produced by these dissociation reactions showed unusual dynamic structural behaviour. In dry acetone the two phosphorus nuclei were magnetically equivalent (species II-A 2 ), whereas in acetone solutions conta…
Cloud of virtual photons in the ground state of the hydrogen atom.
1985
A spinless, nonrelativistic hydrogen atom coupled to an electromagnetic field is considered. The interaction is taken in the minimal-coupling form, and the ground state of the coupled system is obtained by straightforward perturbation theory. The form of the cloud of virtual photons surrounding the atom is studied through the quantum-mechanical average on this state of an appropriately defined coarse-grained energy-density (CGED) operator W(r\ensuremath{\rightarrow}). The properties of W(r\ensuremath{\rightarrow}) are studied in order to show that this operator can give a reliable description of the shape of the virtual photon cloud. The quantum-mechanical average of W(r\ensuremath{\rightar…
Patterns of puffing activity and chromosomal polymorphism in Drosophila subobscura II. Puffing patterns at the prepupa stage
1985
Puffing activity patterns of the five large polytene chromosomes of Drosophila subobscura were studied during the late third-larval instar and through the prepupal period. A total of 166 loci active in some of the eleven stages studied were described. The distribution of these active loci per chromosome is the following: 25 on chromosome A, 33 on chromosome J, 31 on chromosome U, 34 on chromosome E and 43 on chromosome O. Seven principal patterns of puffing activity were defined taking into account the different curves of the puffing histograms. Gene activities per chromosome as well as total were analysed. Three peaks of gene activity at the beginning, middle and ending of prepupation can …
Excitation functions for production of heavy actinides from interactions ofCa40andCa48ions withCm248
1985
Excitation functions have been measured for production of isotopes of Bk through Fm in bombardments of /sup 248/Cm with 234- to 294-MeV /sup 40/Ca ions and with 239- to 318-MeV /sup 48/Ca ions. The maxima of the isotopic distributions for these elements occur at only 2 to 3 mass numbers larger for /sup 48/Ca than for /sup 40/Ca reactions. The shapes of the distributions and the half-widths of about 2.5 mass numbers are quite similar to those observed previously for reactions of /sup 16/O, /sup 18/O, /sup 20/Ne, and /sup 22/Ne with /sup 248/Cm. In general, the excitation functions for /sup 40/Ca show maxima near the Coulomb barrier while those for /sup 48/Ca are about 20 MeV above the barrie…

Effect of α-factor on individual wall mannoproteins fromSaccharomyces cerevisiae acells
1985
Treatment of Saccharomyces cerevisiae a cells with α-factor partially inhibits mannosylation of the high Mr mannoproteins, although there is an increase in the total amount of these molecules present in the wall. They show a similar mobility in SDS-acrylamide gels to those from untreated mnn2 cells. No other significant effects on wall mannoproteins have been observed, except a decrease in the amount of the 29 kDa species.
Gnotobiotische untersuchungen an SPF-Mäusen im rahmen einer studie zur tumorentwicklung im kolon nach cholezystektomie
1985
Summary The relation between cholecystectomy and colon carcinogenesis has not been fully elucidated. As bacteria may be involved in the carcinogenic process, we investigated the effect of cholecystectomy and dimethylhydrazine (DMH) administration to SPF NMRI mice with regard to tumour genesis and bacterial colonisation of the intestine. It results from this study that cholecystectomy does not influence tumour genesis and that 6–7 months post operationem and DMH administration tumours and bacteria originally not found in the animals develop: Clostridia, eubacteria spec, which cannot be differentiated and E. lentum. Theses changes appear in group II of mice (laparotomy and DMH) and group III …
Hard currency indebtedness of the developed socialist countries
1985
In recent years the problems of the indebtedness of the communist countries have been driven somewhat into the background by the high foreign indebtedness of many developing countries and the attention attracted by the balance of payments crises in Brazil and Mexico. Yet there are many indications that the need for the socialist debtor nations to adjust their balance of payments policy has not lessened but, to a large extent, simply been deferred. It is therefore not unlikely that the 1980s will witness a new need to solve the problems of those nations and their creditors in the West.
Identification and isolation of the primary aggregation factor from the cell membrane of the sponge Geodia cydonium
1985
The primary aggregation factor (pAF) of sponge cells is a glycoprotein that is firmly associated with the cell membrane. Polyspecific antibodies (anti-GM) prepared from sera raised against membranes of cells from the siliceous sponge Geodia cydonium were found to inhibit initial aggregation of homologous cells. The inhibition of aggregation, caused by anti-GM was neutralized by pAF. The pAF had been successfully solubilized and enriched by affinity chromatography, gel filtration and density gradient centrifugation, if checked by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of urea. The Mr of the native pAF was approximately 40 000 as estimated by gel filtration; under denaturing condi…
Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometric Determination of Cobalt in Foods
1985
A method is reported for determination of chromium in foodstuffs. Organic matter is digested with nitric acid, followed by oxidation to Cr(VI) and extraction with methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) after HCl addition. Chromium determinations are performed by flame absorption spectroscopy. Absence of interferences is verified and recovery tests are performed on food samples. Quantitation limit (3.8 ng/mL), accuracy (NBS Standard Reference Material 1,573 Tomato Leaves, 4,500 +/- 500 ng/g, found 3,860 +/- 409 ng/g), and precision (CV for vegetable matrix = 9.05%, CV for animal matrix = 14.95%) of the procedure are evaluated.

The modulation of immune complex aggregation by classical pathway-mediated reactions.
1985
Abstract Classical pathway (CP)-triggered reactions of complement-modulated immune complex(IC) aggregation (tetanus toxoid/human anti-tetanus toxoid-IgG; ICs of equivalence) were investigated turbidimetrically during the early stages of reaction. Monospecific Fab'- or Fab-fragments (rabbit) directed against certain complement components were used to block the complement function in normal human serum (NHS). Additionally, parts of the reactions were studied using purified complement components. C1q in serum generated by the addition of EDTA as well as purified C1q were found to increase the IC aggregation. In contrast to C1q, macromolecular C1 is able to inhibit IC aggregation, whereas addit…

Electrochemical study on (NN)Fe3 (CO)9 ((NN) = 2,3-diazanorbornene) and related compounds. A new example of activation of carbon monoxide replaceme…
1985
Abstract The compound (NN)Fe 3 (CO) 9 ( 1 ) in tetrahydrofuran undergoes two reversible one-electron reduction processes in cyclic voltammetry at the platinum electrode. A rapid electron transfer-catalyzed reaction occurs when 1 is reduced in the presence of L (L = P(OMe) 3 ) and this gives (NN)Fe 3 (CO) 8 L ( 2 ), quantitatively. Only an electron-induced nucleophilic substitution is observed for compound 2 under the same conditions, yielding (NN)Fe 3 (CO) 7 L 2 , which undergoes a similar reaction but with much lower efficiency, to give (NN)Fe 3 (CO) 6 L 3 .
Mathematical analysis of the stimulus for the lateral line organ
1985
Behavioral studies have shown that a blind fish is capable of detecting and recognizing stationary objects in its surroundings. It is proposed that the displacement of water caused by the fish as it moves is the basis for this detection capability. Alterations in the displacement of water around the fish, caused by the obstacle, act as stimuli for the lateral line organ. The question of how these stimuli acting on the skin of the fish, image the environment and what information is thus made available to the fish is the concern of this paper. The stimuli for the lateral line organ are derived mathematically. Two cases are treated: that of a fish gliding past an obstacle and that of one appro…

Lysosomal changes in mouse skeletal muscle during the repair of exercise injuries
1985
Lysosomal changes of mouse skeletal muscle during the repair of exercise injuries were studied with biochemical, histochemical, and electron microscopic methods. Treadmill running for 4 hours and 9 hours increased the activities of cathepsin C and beta-glucuronidase, but not that of beta-glycerophosphatase in mouse quadriceps femoris muscle. The highest activities occurred 3 days after exertion and were higher after the longer duration of exertion. Similar changes that were highly correlated with the activities of lysosomal enzymes occurred in the activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and in the concentration of DNA. The activities of lysosomal…
Investigation of heavy ion produced defect structures in insulators by small angle scattering
1985
Fast heavy ions produce stable defects in most dielectrica. As examples mica, Polyethylenterephtalat and Polystyrol were irradiated with Ar, Ni, Kr, Xe and U ions in an energy range from 0.5 up to 20 MeV/u. The resulting defects were investigated by neutron and x-ray small-angle scattering. The ion beam supplied by the UNILAC accelerator at GSI Darmstadt is characterized by its small emittance, the well defined mass, charge and energy of the ions and their stochastical distribution in the phase space. In scattering experiments the system of scattering centers created by these ions causes a scattered intensity distribution which strongly depends on the orientation of the sample with respect …
Postural Sway During Standing and Unexpected Disturbance of Balance in Random Samples of Men of Different Ages
1985
Postural sway behavior while standing and during and after an unexpected disturbance of balance was examined in men aged 31 to 35, 51 to 55, and 71 to 75 years. The groups studied were random samples of men living in the town of Jyväskylä in 1981. Postural sway while standing was more pronounced in the older age groups, whereas after a disturbance of balance postural sway was nearly the same in all age groups. The functioning of the postural control system was correlated with the vibratory threshold on the ankles, grip strength, as well as with aerobic and anaerobic capacity within the age groups. Further, in the youngest age group the functioning of the postural control system was poorer a…
Role of Halide Ion in the Mechanism of Protonolysis of the Pt-C Bond in Pt(II) Alkyl and Aryl Complexes.
1985
Abstract A mechanistic study is described for the electrophilic cleavage of the Pt C σ bond in complexes cis -[PtPh 2 (PEtPh 2 ) 2 ] and trans -[PtXR(PEt 3 ) 2 ] (X = Cl and Br, R = Me, Et, n-Pr, n-Bu, CH 2 Ph) by the proton in the presence of halide ions in aqueous methanol (MeOH/H 2 O, 91v/v) which yields cis -[PtClPh(PEtPh 2 ) 2 ] and trans -[PtX 2 (PEt 3 ) 2 ], respectively. The reactions are first-order in substrate for both systems and the general bivariate rate law k obs = [H + ]{ k H + k x K [[X − ]}/(1 + K [[X − ]) is obeyed. The proposed mechanism involves a fast pre-equilibrium formation (K) of a platinum(II) anionic intermediate via interaction of the halide with the square-plan…
The magnetic resonance of Gd3+ in Gd2Se3 near the phase transition and up to 300 K
1985
Temperature dependences of the width of the Gd2Sc3 ESR lines are investigated. The observed width is satisfactory explained by a dipole mechanism narrowed by exchange interaction. Changes of the Gd2Se3 ESR line at T = 6 K are due to antiferromagnetic ordering in the sample.
Ferrimagnetic Heisenberg chain; influence of a random exchange interaction
1985
We report on the magnetic behavior of ‘‘rigid’’ ferrimagnetic chains isolated in bimetallic complexes of the EDTA and ‘‘flexible’’ ones obtained in the amorphous variety. As shown by LAXS, the only noteworthy difference in the amorphous state is the random distribution of bond angles between nearest neighbors within chains. The ‘‘rigid’’ bimetallic chains in CoNi(EDTA)6H2O are described in terms of Heisenberg model with an exchange coupling J=−7.5 K. The behavior of the amorphous variety somewhat differs, following the law X=AT−0.8 typical of REHAC. A classical spin chain model involving a J distribution and alternating g factors allows to explain successfully the temperature dependence of …

The Politicisation of Banking
1985
Growing government intervention in the international currency markets has distorted incentives and disguised risks. Rodney Atkinson, formerly an economist with Grindlay's Bank, argues that increasing state interference has led bankers to respond to political, not commercial, signals. Many bankers are now rewarded according to their ability to ‘work the system’ rather than for economic expertise.
Influence of the molecular structure on the melt strength and extensibility of polyethylenes
1985
Melt strength (MS) and breaking stretching ratio (BSR) data relative to polyethylenes with different molecular structure (high density (HDPE), low density (LDPE), and linear low density (LLDPE)) are shown. HDPE and LLDPE samples show high breaking stretching ratio and low melt strength values. The LDPE samples exhibit very large melt strength values but low breaking stretching ratio values. For the last mentioned samples, differences are shown in the non-isothermal elongational behavior between samples polymerized with tubular and vessel technology. For all the samples, MS decreases with increasing melt index while BSR increases with melt index.
Preparative and spectroscopic features of ferricenium tetrachloroferrate(III). Interconversion to diferricenium ?-oxo-bis[trichloroferrate(III)]
1985
Ferricenium tetrachloroferrate(III)(1), one of the more frequently cited ferricenium salts, has recently attracted biomedical interest because of its pronounced antineoplastic activity against Ehrlich ascites murine tumor. In this paper, synthetic methods are reinvestigated in an effort to prepare pure(1) free from a common contaminant, diferriceniumμ-oxo-bis(trichloroferrate)(3). The oxodiferrate, or mixtures of this salt with(1), can readily be converted into pure(1) under acidic conditions. Conversely, dimerization of(1) with participation of water to give the oxodiferrate(3) is brought about by recrystallization of the former from moist acetonitrile/methanol in the presence of base; thi…

Cracking of n-heptane on a hzsm-5 zeolite. The influence of acidity and pore structure
1985
Abstract The crackino of n-heptane on a HZSM-5 zeolite has been studied in a continuous qlass flow reactor, at atmospheric pressure, up to 470°C. The initial selectivities to the different reaction products, kinetic rate constants, activation energies and decay parameters have been calculated and compared with those obtained using a large pore zeolite (HYUS). A different product distribution is obtained with the two zeolites. In that way, and considering initial selectivities, different C 6 /C 1 , C 5 /C 2 , C 4 /C3, i-C 4 /n-C 4 , ethylene/ethane, propylene/propane ratios have been found on the two zeolite catalysts. The results have been quantitatively explained by considerinq a direct cr…

Viscosities were measured as a function of pressure and temperature with solutions of PVC 75 000 in cyclohexanone (CHO) and polymer contents ranging from 0,6 to 12 wt.-%, by means of a Searle-type (≥3 wt.-%) and a rolling-ball viscometer (<3 wt.-%). Furthermore, the influence of molecular weight was determined with solutions of 8 wt.-% of PVC 20 000, PVC 37 000 and PVC 100 000. (The numbers in the codes of the PVC specimens are their approximate molecular weights.) For all concentrations and molecular weights, the viscosity increases in a more or less exponential manner with increasing pressure. The ratio f1000 of the viscosity of the solution at 1 000 and 1 bar can be varied by the change …
