Phosphatidylcholine-Gramicidin a Interaction Study in Non-Aqueous Solvent with a new HPLC-SEC Column

1985

Abstract A new HPLC-SEC column, Ultrastyragel 500 A, has been assayed in order to check the separation between gramicidin A and phosphatidylcholine in tetrahydrofuran. The good resolution of both compounds has allowed the quantitation of lipid-polypeptide interaction in terms of the binding ratio parameter, BR. A BR value of 3.6 moles of phosphatidylcholine per mole of gramicidin A has been obtained for a 0.1 % (w/v) phosphatidylcholine solution as eluent. The suitability of this support for studies on lipid-polypeptide interactions in non-aqueous solvents is demonstrated.

The image of the smoking and non-smoking young person

1985

MORE than 1,600 Finnish secondary school pupils between the ages of 12 and 16 completed a question naire about their image of the smoking and non- smoking adolescent. A smoker was described as nervous, unfriendly, untidy, stupid and a low achiever in sport and academic work, but despite this, was seen as a leader. Non-smokers were seen as calm, strong, fairly modest, friendly, tidy and smart, but not as leaders. Older pupils saw the smoker in a more positive light. Those who smoked saw the non- smoker image as positive, and rated the smoking image more highly than did non smokers.

Effect of verapamil and diltiazem on isolated gastro-oesophageal sphincter of the rat

1985

Abstract The effect of verapamil and diltiazem on the contraction induced by agonists on the rat lower oesophageal sphincter in-vitro has been studied. Both calcium entry blockers inhibited the contractile response to acetylcholine, carbachol and KCl. The potency of the inhibitory action was diltiazem > verapamil. The results give substance to the use of calcium entry blockers in the treatment of oesophageal spasm.

Nuclear charge radii of the even sulphur isotopesS32,S34, andS36and ofP31using muonic atoms

1985

Energies of muonic x rays of the Lyman series of the even sulphur isotopes /sup 32/S, /sup 34/S, and /sup 36/S and of natural phosphorus have been determined with absolute precisions up to 23 parts/10/sup 6/. Equivalent Barrett charge radii R/sub k/,..cap alpha.. have been deduced. Their differences between the sulphur isotopes amount to ..delta..R/sub k/,..cap alpha..( /sup 34/S- /sup 32/ S) = 29.7(1.4) am and ..delta..R/sub k/,..cap alpha..( /sup 36/S- /sup 34/ S) = 18.7(1.5) am. Combining these results with recent elastic electron scattering data, we obtain in a model-independent way ..delta../sup 1/2/( /sup 34/S- /sup 3/ 2S) = 23.1(1.2) am and ..delta../sup 1/2/( /sup 36/S- /sup 3/ 4S) …

Attempts to Produce Superheavy Elements by Fusion ofCa48withCm248in the Bombarding Energy Range of 4.5-5.2 MeV/u

1985

A search for superheavy elements was made in bombardments of $^{248}\mathrm{Cm}$ with $^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$ ions performed at projectile energies close to the interaction barrier in order to keep the excitation energy of the compound nucleus $Z=116$, $A=296$ as low as possible. No evidence for superheavy nuclei was obtained in a half-life region from 1 \ensuremath{\mu}s to 10 yr with a production cross section greater than ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}34}$ to ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}35}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$.

Affinity and efficacy of racemic, (+)-, and (−)-methacholine in muscarinic inhibition of [3H]-noradrenaline release

1985

The right postganglionic sympathetic nerves of rat isolated perfused hearts (previously loaded with [3H]-noradrenaline) were stimulated electrically with 10 trains of 10 pulses at 10 Hz. The inhibition by methacholine of stimulation-evoked [3H]-noradrenaline overflow into the perfusate (determined in the presence of corticosterone, desipramine, phentolamine, and propranolol) was taken as a measure for activation of presynaptic muscarinic receptors. The evoked [3H]-noradrenaline overflow was inhibited by (+)-, racemic, and (-)-methacholine in a reversible and concentration-dependent manner. The concentration causing 50% inhibition (IC50) was 0.1, 0.26, and 65 microM, respectively, resulting …

Serum hormones during prolonged training of neuromuscular performance.

1985

The effects of a 24-weeks' progressive training of neuromuscular performance capacity on maximal strength and on hormone balance were investigated periodically in 21 male subjects during the course of the training and during a subsequent detraining period of 12 weeks. Great increases in maximal strength were noted during the first 20 weeks, followed by a plateau phase during the last 4 weeks of training. Testosterone/cortisol ratio increased during training. During the last 4 weeks of training changes in maximal strength correlated with the changes in testosterone/cortisol (P less than 0.01) and testosterone/SHBG (P less than 0.05) ratios. During detraining, correlative decreases were found…

Investigations of polymerizable multilayers as gas separation membranes

1985

Abstract Polymerizable Langmuir—Blodgett (LB) multilayers of several diacetylenic amphiphiles were investigated on gas-permeable, polymeric supports. Macroscopically homogeneous multilayer films of hexacosa-10,12-diynoic acid and pentacosa-10,12-diyne phosphonate could be built up on polypropylene and polytetrafluoroethylene materials. As shown by scanning electron microscopy, the microscopic homogeneity of the built-up multilayers was mainly controlled by the surface structure of the support material, whereas the chemical nature of the support and photopolymerization of the layers did not affect the high order of the films. Such LB multilayers deposited on porous support materials are able…

Spatial development of multiple-gap states in nonequilibrium superconductors

1985

We have studied the gap instability in a superconductor under tunneling injection at high voltages by probing the spatial distribution of the phonon emission. A high sensitivity was achieved by using the fountain pressure of superfluid helium for detecting the phonons. Spatial structures were observed at gap depressions as small as 2%. From their spatial development we find that the quasiparticles diffuse into regions where their density is higher.

Complexes of organometallic compounds. LI. The correlation between 119Sn Mössbauer isomer shifts and partial atomic charges on tin in R3SnL compounds

1985

Abstract The 119Sn Mossbauer isomer shift parameters, δ, of compounds R3SnL (R = AlK, Ph; L = F, Cl, OH, OR′, CN, NCS, NCO, N3) have been correlated to partial atomic charges on tin QSn, calculated according to a valence state electronegativity equalization procedure carried out by the CHELEQ program. A unique δ/QSn correlation has been obtained for all the five-coordinated R3SnL species by using average δ parameters for the AlK3IV derivatives.

The Tree-QAP is a special case of the Quadratic Assignment Problem where the flows not equal zero form a tree. No condition is required for the distance matrix. In this paper we present an integer programming formulation for the Tree-QAP. We use this formulation to construct four Lagrangean relaxations that produce several lower bounds for this problem. To solve one of the relaxed problems we present a Dynamic Programming algorithm which is a generalization of the algorithm of this type that gives a lower bound for the Travelling Salesman Problem. A comparison is given between the lower bounds obtained by each ralaxation for examples with size from 12 to 25.

Ultrastructural study of primary canine and human pigmentary retinopathy

1985

An electron microscopic study was performed on eyes of Labrador dogs afflicted with progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). There was complete loss of photoreceptors, atrophy of the remaining retina and gliosis in the peripheral part while the central retina showed incomplete loss of photoreceptors and an almost total disappearance of photoreceptor outer segments. Melanin-bearing cells, largely containing melanolysosomes, were found deep inside the retina. This electron microscopic study also incorporated the retina of a middle-aged woman affected by retinopathia pigmentosa (RP). The fine structure of the diseased retina showed a similar pattern of lesions, more pronounced in the periphery of th…

Ejection and collision orbits of the spatial restricted three-body problem

1985

We begin by describing the global flow of the spatial two body rotating problem, μ=0. The remainder of the work is devoted to study the ejection and collision orbits when μ>-0. We make use of the ‘blow up’ techniques to show that for any fixed value of the Jacobian constant the set of these orbits is diffeomorphic to S2×R. Also we find some particular collision-ejection orbits.

Positron studies of hydrogen-defect interactions in proton irradiated molybdenum

1985

Molybdenum single crystals are irradiated at 20 K with 6 MeV protons. The radiation damage and lattice defect annealing is studied by positron lifetime spectroscopy in the temperature range from 15 to 720 K. Loss of vacancies due to recombination with mobile interstitials is observed at 40 K (Stage I) in agreement with resistivity measurements. This is the first time Stage I is observed by positrons below 77 K. The implanted hydrogen decorates the vacancies around 100 K, which is consistent with a hydrogen migration energy in molybdenum:E H = 0.3–0.4 eV. Clustering of spatially correlated vacancies takes place in a wide temperature region below the usual vacancy clustering stage (Stage III)…

Geochemical characteristics of Archaean and Late Proterozoic to Palaeozoic fine-grained sediments from Southern Africa and significance for the evolu…

1985

Chemical data for pelitic rocks (shallow-marine platform sediments) of the ∼ 2.9 Ga old Pongola Supergroup, South Africa, and the 550–700 Ma old Nama Group, Namibia, revealed clearly different compositions in both groups. A comparison of the Pongola and Nama data with literature values for sedimentary rocks shows a trend for Cr/TiO2 and Cr/Zn ratios as well as the absolute Cr and Ni concentrations to lower values with decreasing age, whereas the Cr/Ni ratios seem to remain broadly constant through time. REE patterns of Pongola and Nama sediments show no significant difference, thus giving the impression of a post-Archaean origin for the demonstrably Archaean Pongola sediments. However, a pl…

Cohomology, central extensions, and (dynamical) groups

1985

We analyze in this paper the process of group contraction which allows the transition from the Einstenian quantum dynamics to the Galilean one in terms of the cohomology of the Poincare and Galilei groups. It is shown that the cohomological constructions on both groups do not commute with the contraction process. As a result, the extension coboundaries of the Poincare group which lead to extension cocycles of the Galilei group in the “nonrelativistic” limit are characterized geometrically. Finally, the above results are applied to a quantization procedure based on a group manifold.

Deuteron n.m.r. in relation to the glass transition in polymers

1985

Abstract 2H n.m.r. is introduced as a tool for investigating slow molecular motion in the glass transition region of amorphous polymers. In particular, we compare 2H spin alignment echo spectra of chain deuterated polystyrene with models for restricted rotational Brownian motion. Molecular motion in the polystyrene-toluene system has been investigated by analysing 2H n.m.r. of partially deuterated polystyrene and toluene, respectively. The diluent mobility in the mixed glass has been decomposed into ‘solid’ and ‘liquid’ components where the respective average correlation times differ by more than 5 decades.
