The Role of the Classical Pathway for the Bactericidal Effect of Normal Sera Against Gram-Negative Bacteria

Many gram-negative bacteria are killed after treatment with normal serum. This phenomenon was already described in 1889 by Buchner. The serum-bactericidal effect is abolished when serum has been incubated for 30 min at 56° C. Gram-positive bacteria are less sensitive than gram-negative bacteria to direct killing, although gram-positive cocci are opsonized by the action of serum mediated by antibodies and complement (Inoue et al. 1968; Johnston et al. 1969). Normal sera exhibit bactericidal and bacteriolytic properties against some gramnegative strains; whereas, other gram-negative strains are serum resistant. Cycle-triggered averaging of respiration-related neuronal activity

Abstract A computer system is presented which provides off-line computation of cycle-triggered histograms (CTH) of respiration-related neuronal activity. Binwidths of the histograms are freely selectable by software from 10 ms to 100 ms. For special evaluation purposes. CTHs can be standardized in different ways concerning cycle duration as well as amplitude. Time incidence of maximum frequency, center of gravity and expiration-to-inspiration phase transition within the respiratory cycle are computed. Human chromophobe cell renal carcinoma

Twelve renal cell carcinomas composed of "chromophobe" cells are described. This is the first report of renal chromophobe cell tumors in humans neoplasms of this cell type having been described previously only in experimentally induced adenomas in animals. By light microscopy chromophobe cells have slightly opaque or finely reticular cytoplasm when stained with haematoxylin and eosin. They may be distinguished from the clear cells of hypernephroid renal cell carcinomas by the strongly positive reaction of their cytoplasm with Hale's (1946) colloidal iron method and the weaker positive reaction with alcian blue. A case of lipogranulomatosis Farber: some clinical and ultrastructural aspects

A 20-month-old girl showed typical clinical signs of Farber disease: hoarseness since birth, and periarticular subcutaneous painful nodules. Complete deficiency of acid ceramidase activity was found in cultured skin fibroblasts. An electron microscopic examination of a dermal nodule disclosed pathognomonic tubular inclusions in histiocytes. In epidermal cells zebra-body-like and needle-like lysosomal inclusions were found. Their ultrastructure is different from that of the intrahistiocytic lysosomal inclusions. Abstract The gas chromatographic retention behaviour of methylethyl, 1-methylpropyl, 2-methylpropyl, 1,2-dimethylpropyl, 1-methylbutyl and 3-methylbutyl esters of benzoic and o-, m- and p-chlorobenzoic acids on low-polarity (SE-30) and polar (OV-351) capillary columns under several temperature-programmed and isothermal conditions is reported. The retention data and the Kovats retention indices for all 24 components are given and the separation of a complex mixture is discussed. The retention index increments have been used to examine the effects of chain branching and chlorine substitution. The results are compared with those for n-alkyl benzoates and monochlorobenzoates.

Zu einem Zeitpunkt, als sich die extrakorporale Stoswellenlithotripsie noch in einem experimentellen und klinischen Versuchsstadium befand, wurde die perkutane Nephrolithotomie als neues Behandlungsverfahren vorgestellt (1). Bei mangelnder allgemeiner Verfugbarkeit von Stoswelleneinrichtungen konnte sie sich in der Folgezeit als alternatives Behandlungsverfahren zur offenen operativen Behandlung von Nieren- und Harnleitersteinen weltweit durchsetzen. Ihr derzeitiger Stellenwert mus in Relation zu den Behandlungsmoglichkeiten, die die Stoswellenlithotripsie und auch andere endourologische Masnahmen wie die Ureterorenoskopie bieten, definiert werden.

A program is given, that computes solar gain on a parallelepiped volume taking in to consideration the shadows cast by any system of surrounding parallelepiped. It contains an algorithm for the quick discarding of non shadowing volumes, for the construction of the union polygon, without repetition of overlapping shadows, and for the intersection polygon of formerly found union polygon with the shadowed faces.

Helium bubbles in alpha-irradiated aluminium: positron lifetime studies

The formation of He-stabilised voids in aluminium single crystals injected with helium is monitored by positron lifetime measurements. The bubbles are observed to grow during annealing from 300 to 930K. The bubbles are extremely stable and survive annealing up to the melting point. Positron lifetime data are used to discuss the He density inside the bubbles and their growth mechanism.
