Every affine central collineation of a translation plane π induces a special collineation of the projective space π spanned by the spreadF belonging to π. Here the relations between these special collineations of π and certain incidence propositions inF are investigated; so new proofs are given for some characterisations of (A,B)-regular spreads included in [7].

Rapid and direct gas chromatographic determination of oxalic acid in urine

1979

The known methods of oxalic acid determination are not suitable for reliable, rapid and economical routine analysis. A rapid gas chromatographic method has been developed which dispenses with separation operations and measures oxalic acid as a diethylester by means of back-flushing, and using malonic acid as an internal standard. One determination can be conducted within 6 to 8 min. and preparation of the specimen takes about the same amount of time. If the gas chromatographic conditions are changed and more time is permitted for analysis, numerous other extractable acidic metabolites can also be determined.

Singlet ground state magnetism: II. magnetic excitons in paramagnetic TbP

1979

The magneticΓ 1 –Γ 4 exciton of the singlet ground state system TbP has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering above the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature. Considerable dispersion and a pronounced splitting was found in the [100] and [110] directions. Both the band width and the splitting increased rapidly as the transition temperature was approached in accordance with the predictions of the RPA-theory. The dispersion is analysed in terms of a phenomenological model using interactions up to the fourth nearest neighbour.

Classification of human placental villi. I. Histology.

1979

The classification of human placental villi was reviewed on the basis of material prepared by means of special methods. The material from in situ normal-term placentae was biopsied by aspiration into glutaraldehyde. The classification was made on the basis of light-microscopic observations of semithin sections, reconstructions from serial sections, and scanning-electron micrographs. The peripheral villous tree is roughly divided into stem (ramuli), intermediate and terminal villi. The intermediate villi may be further subdivided as mature and immature types, which are found between the stem and terminal villi. Some of the terminal villi possess a local specialization described as the neck r…

Dexamethasone in severe head injuries

1979

The results of a double-blind-study on the effects of placebo, a low dose and a high dose of dexamethasone on severe closed head injury are presented. 95 patients were selected and carefully analyzed according to mortality, neurological course and symptoms, midbrain lesions and final outcome. The results demonstrate that dexamethasone, particularly given in high doses, reduces mortality and improves the neurological course. The steroid treatment seems to improve chances as well as quality of survival. Apart from the dose, timing of administration is of great importance.

Radiative muon capture on 12C and 16O

1979

Abstract We study exclusive radiative muon capture on 12 C(g.s.) leading to 12 B(g.s.), and on 16 O(g.s.) leading to 16 N(0 − , 120 keV). Our investigation, which is based on impulse approximation, puts special emphasis on elementary particle aspects of radiative capture, such as tests of magnitude and momentum transfer dependence of the induced pseudoscalar, and possible contributions of axial currents of second kind (weak electricity). We calculate several correlation observables which are sensitive to the nucleonic currents but depend very little on the structure of the nuclear initial and final states. In particular, it is shown that in capture on 12 C the polarization and alignment of …

H-Y antigen in the teleost.

1979

H-Y antigen, presumably the product of mammalian testis-determining genes, has been detected in three species of teleost fish, Xiphophorus maculatus, Haplochromis burtoni, and Oryzias latipes, and in hybrids of the genus Tilapia. In X. maculatus H-Y was most readily detected in YY males, suggesting that a genetic determinant of H-Y antigen expression may exist on the teleost Y-chromosome. Although H-Y was detected in males and not in females in each of the species that we studied, male heterogamety has not been firmly established for H. burtoni. Thus despite the extreme phlyogenetic conservation of H-Y genes and their association with the Y-chromosome, it remains open to question whether H-…

T-cell-derived helper factor allows Lyt 123 thymocytes to differentiate into cytotoxic T lymphocytes.

1979

IT is generally accepted that the diversity of T-cell responsiveness is generated in the thymus1. It is also known that except for a few Lyt 1 cells all thymocytes express the Lyt 123 phenotype2,3. Surprisingly, thymocytes are poorly responsive in vitro4, and only the medullary thymocytes, comprising 5–10% of the total thymic cell population, show an in vitro responsiveness comparable with that of peripheral T cells5. Cortical thymocytes, comprising 90–95% of all thymocytes, have previously been considered to be immature and immunologically incompetent4. The result reported here show that thymocytes are able to generate alloantigen-, virus- and hapten-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL),…

Potentiation of the mechanical behavior of the human skeletal muscle through prestretching

1979

Force-velocity and power-velocity curves in a vertical jump involving movements around several joints were derived from vertical ground reaction forces and knee angular velocities. The jumps were performed with weights from 10 to 160 kg added on the shoulders. The obtained curves from a semi-squatting static starting position resembled those reported for isolated muscles or single muscle groups. Vertical jumps were also performed in the conditions where the shortening of the leg extensors was preceded by prestretching of the active muscles either through a preparatory counter-movement or dropping down on the force-platform from the various heights ranging from 20 to 100 cm. Prestretching mo…

Mechanical power and segmental contribution to force impulses in long jump take-off

1979

Changes in total mechanical work, its partitioning into different energy states, mechanical power, force-time characteristics, force impulses of body segments and mass center's pathway characteristics during long jump take-off were investigated on four national and six ordinary level athletes. Both cinematographic and force-platform techniques were used. The data showed that the national level jumpers had higher run-up and higher take-off (release) velocities in horizontal and vertical directions. In addition, they were able to utilize efficiently the elastic energy stored in the leg extensor muscles at take-off impact. This was seen in high support leg eccentric and concentric forces, whic…

Mechanical characteristics and fiber composition of human leg extensor muscles.

1979

To investigate the influence of skeletal muscle fiber composition on the mechanical performance of human skeletal muscle under dynamic conditions, 34 physical education students with differing muscle fiber composition (M. vastus lateralis) were used as subjects to perform maximal vertical jumps on the force-platform. Two kinds of jumps were performed: one from a static starting position (SJ), the other with a preliminary counter-movement (CMJ). The calculated mechanical parameters included height of rise of center of gravity (h), average force (F), net impulse (NI) and average mechanical power (W). It was observed that the percentage of fast twitch fibers was significantly related (p less t…

1979

Abstract A glycoprotein was isolated from human plasma which partially inhibited C3 carrying erythrocytes from binding to complement receptor cells (CR + C). Based on its physicochemical characteristics and its antigenicity this glycoprotein was identified as aI-antitrypsin (α 1 -AT). The activity of α 1 -AT towards-C3 and its fragments was unaffected by heating but it was destroyed by periodic acid. The isolated carbohydrate moiety of α 1 -AT showed the same effect as the intact molecule. Using F(ab) 2 of IgG-anti-α 1 -AT, α 1 -AT could be demonstrated on Raji cells and human erythrocytes. Treatment of these CR + C with IgG-anti-α 1 -AT resulted in a blockade of their C3 receptor activity.…

Influence of molecular weight on the creep behavior of undiluted polyisobutylenes

1979

The elongational behavior in constant force experiments has been considered for three samples of commercial polyisobutylene. The results compare favorably with the predictions of two existing non-linear theories as long as the samples deform homogeneously. Some qualitative observations have been made with reference to the “failure point”, i.e., the point where a non-homogeneous deformation begins.

Differential function of the phosphoglucomutase isozymes PGM1 and PGM2

1979

A total of 13 metabolites thought to be possibly inhibitory were tested for their influence on PGM isozyme activities, each at several different concentrations. The analysis of statistical significance was based on enzyme activities obtained by densitometric measurements of starch gels. Five of the substances were found to inhibit PGM activity, three of which definitely and a further one probably led to a significantly stronger inhibition of the isozymes of the PGM2 locus than of PGM1 isozymes. They are (1) fructose-1,6-diphosphate, (2) adenosine triphosphate, (3) citrate, and (4) possibly 2,3-diphosphoglycerate. Thus, PGM1 isozymes proved to function better in hard or perhaps marginal meta…

Measurement of the velocity and attenuation of fourth sound in helium II

1979

The velocity and the attenuation of fourth sound have been measured in liquid helium at temperatures between 0.8 K and the λ point, along the vapor pressure curve. The measurements were made using the resonance technique and the helium was contained between small pores in packed powder specimens. From the velocity, it could be determined that the sound propagates under “adiabatic” conditions. According to theory, the attenuation of fourth sound consists of two contributions: surface losses due to heat exchange with the resonator body and volume losses due to dissipative processes associated with the viscosity coefficients η and ζ3. The results of our attenuation measurements are in agreemen…

α-Hydro-ω-hydroxypoly(5-chloro-2-hydroxy-1,3-phenylenemethylene)s (1a, b), the oligomeric condensation products from 4-chloro-2,6-bis(hydroxymethyl)phenol and 4-chlorophenol with hydrochloric acid in 1,4-dioxane, could be completely dehalogenated at room temperature and atmospheric pressure with hydrogene/Raney-Ni. The resulting oligomers 2a, b were esterified with acetic anhydride, and the esters 3a, b were subjected to a oligomer analogous Fries rearrangement to form the linear α-hydro-ω-hydroxypoly(5-acetyl-2-hydroxy-1,3-phenylenemethylene)s 4a and 4b. The characterization of the products was mainly done by spectroscopic methods.

Ester-Ester Exchange Reactions of Aliphatic Polyesters

1979

Abstract The kinetics of ester-ester exchange reactions of poly(ethylene adipate) and poly(trimethylene adipate) at 312°C and in the absence of a solvent and catalysts has been reported previously. Independent investigations of the thermal degradation reactions of these polyesters under high vacuum have shown that pyrolysis already starts above 270°C. An ester-ester exchange mechanism via a reversible thermal degradation reaction is proposed.

1979

N-Trifluoroacetyl-Nylon 66 (2) obtained by the reaction of Nylon 66 (1) with trifluoroacetic anhydride is very suitable as a polymeric reagent for the trifluoroacetylation of amines and alcohols. The advantages of 2 compared with low molecular trifluoroacetylating reagents are discussed. The selectivity against different substituted anilines and against structurally isomeric secondary amines was studied intensively by kinetic measurements.
