A new association of relict maquis with Ptilostemon greuteri (Oleo-Ceratonion, Quercetea ilicis), located in a circumscribed area of north-western Si…
2022
This paper illustrates the results of a survey aimed at deepening available knowledge on the ecology of Ptilostemon greuteri (Asteraceae), a very rare palaeoendemic and relict nano-phanerophyte discovered about 15 years ago on Monte Inici, near Castellammare del Golfo (province of Trapani, north-western Sicily). Two plant communities characterised by P. greuteri are described in detail; they occur in the locus classicus and in a second, recently discovered stand, which is also very localised and threatened by fire. The field investigations revealed that the sites where the species grows are very similar from the ecological point of view; in fact, both of them are located on the steep slopes…
Machine-readable entailments with the Italian 'prendere' construction expressing hitting and insulting events
2022
The Italian language features a little debated transitive construction with prendere ‘to take/to catch’ in which a prepositional phrase (PP) with an adverbial value occurs mandatorily (e.g. Lui prese a pugni Leo ‘He punched Leo’). Semantically, this construction often implies the use of physical force or verbal offence. In the hitting or insulting event, the notional subject generally is a [+ Human] Agent, whilst the notional direct object generally is a [+ Animate] Affectee ([1]: 4). It can be contended that prendere, which carries no literal meaning, is zero-valent and that the predicate assigning semantic roles is the PP. A computational tool will be illustrated, …
A New Potential Dietary Approach to Supply Micronutrients to Physically Active People through Consumption of Biofortified Vegetables
2022
Micronutrients are required in many reactions involved in physical activity and exercise. Most physically active people do not meet the body’s needs in terms of micronutrients through diet. The novelty of the present manuscript is the use of an innovative dietary approach to supply micronutrients to physically active people through biofortified food. Therefore, the key point of this study was to verify whether supplementation with biofortified vegetables—and specifically molybdenum (Mo)-enriched lettuce—in healthy volunteers affects essential regulators of body homeostasis and, specifically, hematological parameters, iron and lipid metabolism, and hepatic function. Twenty-…
Controlling Exciton Propagation in Organic Crystals through Strong Coupling to Plasmonic Nanoparticle Arrays.
2022
Exciton transport in most organic materials is based on an incoherent hopping process between neighboring molecules. This process is very slow, setting a limit to the performance of organic optoelectronic devices. In this Article, we overcome the incoherent exciton transport by strongly coupling localized singlet excitations in a tetracene crystal to confined light modes in an array of plasmonic nanoparticles. We image the transport of the resulting exciton–polaritons in Fourier space at various distances from the excitation to directly probe their propagation length as a function of the exciton to photon fraction. Exciton–polaritons with an exciton fraction of 50% show a propagation length…
Allopolyploidisation in a geological collision zone: on the origin of the tetraploid Anthemis cupaniana Nyman (Compositae, Anthemideae) in Sicily
2022
AbstractThe genus Anthemis has a circum-Mediterranean distribution and comprises c. 175 annual, biennial, and perennial species with polyploid species and species complexes found in its section A. sect. Hiorthia. In Sicily, the genus is represented by 13 species, one of these being the tetraploid A. cupaniana, which is endemic to the island and is distributed throughout the limestone mountains at elevations between 500 and 1800 m a.s.l. Discordant positions in phylogenetic trees based on two plastid regions (psbA-trnH and trnC-petN) and on one nuclear marker (nrDNA ITS1 + 5.8S + ITS2) reveal that the species is of allopolyploid origin, with the maternal parent from the species group around …

Single-digit nanomolar inhibitors lock the aromatase active site via a dualsteric targeting strategy
2022
The most frequently diagnosed breast cancer (BC) type in women expresses estrogen receptor (ER) , depends on estrogens for its growth, being classified as ER positive (ER+). The gold standard therapy for the treatment of this tumor relies on the inhibition of the aromatase enzyme, which catalyzes estrogen biosynthesis. Despite the clinical success of current aromatase inhibitors (AIs), after prolonged therapeutic regimens, BC ER + patients experience acquired resistance and disease relapse. This points up the urgent need for a newer generation of AIs able to overcome resistance issues, while mitigating toxicity and side effects of current therapies. Here we performed the synthesis, biologic…
Tales of Twisters and Blurring Boundaries: Borders in/of Adaptation
2022
“The journey creates us. We become the frontiers we cross.”Salman Rushdie, “Step Across This Line”, p. 351 Taking its cue from Kate Newell’s analysis of the film as “culture-text” (Newell 2017), the cover illustration of this special issue of Interfaces devoted to “Borders in/of Adaptation” focuses on an iconic image from The Wizard of Oz (1939), as our intrepid outsiders journey through treacherous poppy fields before arriving at the Emerald City to see its all-powerful wizard, the ostensibl...
2022
Abstract The Taṯqīf al-lisān wa talqīḥ al-ǧanān by the grammarian and linguist, Abū Ḥafṣ ʿUmar Ibn Ḫalaf Ibn Makkī al-Ḥamīrī al-Māzirī al-Ṣiqillī, is an example of the Arabic language spoken in 10th-century Sicily, when the island was an Islamic Emirate. In its 50 chapters, the treaty lists grammatical errors made by Sicilians whether common people (al-ʿāmma) or cultivated speakers (al-muḫaṣṣiṣūn). The typology of this treatise falls within those classified as laḥn al-ʿāmma, a field of linguistic science that is dedicated to correcting forms that deviate from the grammar rules of the standard language accepted by grammarians and lexicographers. This study will focus on two chapters concerni…
Abelian combinatorics on words: A survey
2022
We survey known results and open problems in abelian combinatorics on words. Abelian combinatorics on words is the extension to the commutative setting of the classical theory of combinatorics on words. The extension is based on \emph{abelian equivalence}, which is the equivalence relation defined in the set of words by having the same Parikh vector, that is, the same number of occurrences of each letter of the alphabet. In the past few years, there was a lot of research on abelian analogues of classical definitions and properties in combinatorics on words. This survey aims to gather these results.
Local inhomogeneous second-order characteristics for spatio-temporal point processes occurring on linear networks
2022
AbstractPoint processes on linear networks are increasingly being considered to analyse events occurring on particular network-based structures. In this paper, we extend Local Indicators of Spatio-Temporal Association (LISTA) functions to the non-Euclidean space of linear networks, allowing to obtain information on how events relate to nearby events. In particular, we propose the local version of two inhomogeneous second-order statistics for spatio-temporal point processes on linear networks, the K- and the pair correlation functions. We put particular emphasis on the local K-functions, deriving come theoretical results which enable us to show that these LISTA functions are useful for diagn…
Due democratiche cristiane alla Consulta nazionale: Laura Bianchini e Angela Maria Guidi Cingolani
2022
Green supply chain management in manufacturing firms: A resource-based viewpoint
2022
As sustainability draws increasing attention due to the COVID-19 pandemic, interest in the green supply chain has likewise substantially increased. The present study contributes deeper insights into the logical integration of the resource-based characteristics that can facilitate the effective transition from traditional to green supply chains while also increasing the effectiveness of existing green supply chains. The proposed model, rooted in the resource-based view (RBV) theory, examines the associations of supply chain connectivity (SCC), supply chain information sharing (SCIS), top management commitment (TMC) and green procurement and logistics acceptance (GPLA) with green supply chain…
A Patient with Sickle Cell Disease and Recurrent Venous Thromboembolism after Renal Transplantation
2022
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a life-threatening complication, especially in case of recurrence. The appropriate duration of anticoagulant treatment following the first event is crucial. Risk factors that increase the risk of recurrence of VTE are many, and include medications, kidney disease, renal transplantation (RT), and a diagnosis of sickle cell disease (SCD). There are currently no guidelines that define the duration of anticoagulant therapy after the first event in a patient with RT. We report a case of recurring episodes of VTE after RT in a SCD patient. Our case suggests that the use of a long-term anticoagulant treatment may be recommended in patients with SCD and RT after the …
Jihadismo e carcere in Italia
2022
Patient-centered outcomes after surgical treatment of peri-implantitis: a prospective clinical study.
2022
Background: Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory process affecting soft and hard tissues surrounding dental implants, causing progressive marginal bone loss. Peri-implant surgery is the treatment of choice. However, evidence about its impact on patients' quality of life (QoL) is limited. This study aimed to assess pain and QoL in the first seven post-operative days and measure patient satisfaction at the end of this period. Material and methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted in patients with peri-implantitis. Patients reported pain on a visual analogue scale (VAS) ranging from 0 to 100mm every day during the first week after surgery. They then completed the OHIP-14sp questionnaire…

Effects of PCSK9 inhibitors on HDL cholesterol efflux and serum cholesterol loading capacity in familial hypercholesterolemia subjects: a multi-lipid…
2022
Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), beyond regulating LDL cholesterol (LDL-c) plasma levels, exerts several pleiotropic effects by modulating lipid metabolism in extrahepatic cells such as macrophages. Macrophage cholesterol homeostasis depends on serum lipoprotein functions, including the HDL capacity to promote cell cholesterol efflux (CEC) and the serum capacity to promote cell cholesterol loading (CLC). The aim of this observational study was to investigate the effect of PCSK9 inhibitors (PCSK9-i) treatment on HDL-CEC and serum CLC in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). 31 genetically confirmed FH patients were recruited. Blood was collected and serum is…
Survival rate of odontogenic descending necrotizing mediastinitis. Our experience in last 5 years
2022
Descending necrotising mediastinitis is one of the most lethal and least frequent forms of mediastinitis. It is a life-threatening infection most frequently originating from an oropharyngeal or odontogenic infection. A retrospective study of 6 patients diagnosed and treated for descending necrotising mediastinitis between 2015 and 2020 is reported. All patients were male, mean age of 34.83 years; 66% were smokers. 83% had an orocervical infection and 34% had initial mediastinal spread. All patients were treated initially with empirical broad-spectrum antibiotics and surgical drainage, with subsequent admission to the Intensive Care Unit; only one of them required tracheostomy. The mean hosp…
Progress in THz Rectifier Technology: Research and Perspectives
2022
Schottky diode (SD) has seen great improvements in the past few decades and, for many THz applications, it is the most useful device. However, the use and recycling of forms of energy such as solar energy and the infrared thermal radiation that the Earth continuously emits represent one of the most relevant and critical issues for this diode, which is unable to rectify signals above 5 THz. The goal is to develop highly efficient diodes capable of converting radiation from IR spectra to visible ones in direct current (DC). A set of performance criteria is investigated to select some of the most prominent materials required for developing innovative types of electrodes, but also a wide variet…
Learned Sorted Table Search and Static Indexes in Small Model Space
2022
Machine Learning Techniques, properly combined with Data Structures, have resulted in Learned Static Indexes, innovative and powerful tools that speed-up Binary Search, with the use of additional space with respect to the table being searched into. Such space is devoted to the ML model. Although in their infancy, they are methodologically and practically important, due to the pervasiveness of Sorted Table Search procedures. In modern applications, model space is a key factor and, infact, a major open question concerning this area is to assess to whatextent one can enjoy the speed-up of Learned Indexes while using constant or nearly constant space models. We address it here by (a) introducing…

Brain Source Correlates of Speech Perception and Reading Processes in Children With and Without Reading Difficulties
2022
Neural correlates in reading and speech processing have been addressed extensively in the literature. While reading skills and speech perception have been shown to be associated with each other, their relationship remains debatable. In this study, we investigated reading skills, speech perception, reading, and their correlates with brain source activity in auditory and visual modalities. We used high-density event-related potentials (ERPs), fixation-related potentials (FRPs), and the source reconstruction method. The analysis was conducted on 12–13-year-old schoolchildren who had different reading levels. Brain ERP source indices were computed from frequently repeated Finnish speech stimuli…

Dual orexin receptor blocker suvorexant attenuates hypercapnic ventilatory augmentation in mice
2022
Suvorexant (Belsomra(R)), a dual orexin receptor antagonist widely used in the treatment of insomnia, inhibits the arousal system in the brain. However, the drug’s ventilatory effects have not been fully explored. This study aims to investigate the expression of orexin receptors in respiratory neurons and the effects of suvorexant on ventilation. Immunohistology of brainstem orexin receptor OX2R expression was performed in adult mice (n = 4) in (1) rostral ventral respiratory group (rVRG) neurons projecting to the phrenic nucleus (PhN) retrogradely labeled by Fluoro-Gold (FG) tracer, (2) neurons immunoreactive for paired like homeobox 2b (Phox2b) in the parafacial respiratory group/retrotra…

Ventricular Fibrillation and Tachycardia Detection Using Features Derived from Topological Data Analysis
2022
A rapid and accurate detection of ventricular arrhythmias is essential to take appropriate therapeutic actions when cardiac arrhythmias occur. Furthermore, the accurate discrimination between arrhythmias is also important, provided that the required shocking therapy would not be the same. In this work, the main novelty is the use of the mathematical method known as Topological Data Analysis (TDA) to generate new types of features which can contribute to the improvement of the detection and classification performance of cardiac arrhythmias such as Ventricular Fibrillation (VF) and Ventricular Tachycardia (VT). The electrocardiographic (ECG) signals used for this evaluation were obtained from…
Los desafíos éticos del Transhumanismo
2022
2022
With judgements no. 30490/2021 and no. 40652/2021 the Supreme Court affirmed that if the employee, as part of a contract, claims that the relationship is attributed to another employer, there is no burden of appeal from the cessation of the activity, unless there is a written communication equivalent to a dismissal. The regulations regarding limitation are, in fact, strictly interpreted and are not susceptible of analogous application. The Author examines the two decisions in the light of the overall context of the rules on limitation through an analysis of the jurisprudence of legitimacy and merit, even if not in conformity, to finally clarify that the position taken by the Supreme Court i…
Early prediction of COVID-19 outcome using artificial intelligence techniques and only five laboratory indices
2022
We aimed to develop a prediction model for intensive care unit (ICU) hospitalization of Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) patients using artificial neural networks (ANN). We assessed 25 laboratory parameters at first from 248 consecutive adult COVID-19 patients for database creation, training, and development of ANN models. We developed a new alpha-index to assess association of each parameter with outcome. We used 166 records for training of computational simulations (training), 41 for documentation of computational simulations (validation), and 41 for reliability check of computational simulations (testing). The first five laboratory indices ranked by importance were Neutrophil-to-lymphoc…
De facto differentiation in the EU’s economic and monetary union - A rationalist explanation
2022
Although there are various legal tools to make European integration more flexible, the EU and its member states uphold long-term arrangements of de facto differentiation circumventing EU law. This article assesses their role in the EU’s system of differentiated integration. To that end, it advances a model based on rational choice theory, outlining the steps and conditions under which tolerated arrangements of de facto differentiation can emerge. This is illustrated in three case studies in Economic and Monetary Union (EMU): (1) Sweden’s de facto opt-out from EMU; (2) Kosovo’s adoption of the euro as sole legal tender, and (3) the Fiscal Compact. Data was gathered via document analysis and …
