Early prediction of COVID-19 outcome using artificial intelligence techniques and only five laboratory indices

2022

We aimed to develop a prediction model for intensive care unit (ICU) hospitalization of Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) patients using artificial neural networks (ANN). We assessed 25 laboratory parameters at first from 248 consecutive adult COVID-19 patients for database creation, training, and development of ANN models. We developed a new alpha-index to assess association of each parameter with outcome. We used 166 records for training of computational simulations (training), 41 for documentation of computational simulations (validation), and 41 for reliability check of computational simulations (testing). The first five laboratory indices ranked by importance were Neutrophil-to-lymphoc…

With judgements no. 30490/2021 and no. 40652/2021 the Supreme Court affirmed that if the employee, as part of a contract, claims that the relationship is attributed to another employer, there is no burden of appeal from the cessation of the activity, unless there is a written communication equivalent to a dismissal. The regulations regarding limitation are, in fact, strictly interpreted and are not susceptible of analogous application. The Author examines the two decisions in the light of the overall context of the rules on limitation through an analysis of the jurisprudence of legitimacy and merit, even if not in conformity, to finally clarify that the position taken by the Supreme Court i…

Classification of EEG signals for prediction of epileptic seizures

2022

Epilepsy is a common brain disorder that causes patients to face multiple seizures in a single day. Around 65 million people are affected by epilepsy worldwide. Patients with focal epilepsy can be treated with surgery, whereas generalized epileptic seizures can be managed with medications. It has been noted that in more than 30% of cases, these medications fail to control epileptic seizures, resulting in accidents and limiting the patient’s life. Predicting epileptic seizures in such patients prior to the commencement of an oncoming seizure is critical so that the seizure can be treated with preventive medicines before it occurs. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals of patients recorded to ob…

Asymptotic comparison of the implicative fragments of certain fuzzy logics

2022

An asymptotic similarity of some fragments of two fuzzy logics is proved. We focus on two 3-valued fuzzy logics: the Gödel-Dummett one and the Łukasiewicz one and we consider their purely implicative fragments of two variables. This paper shows the existence of the densities of truth of these logics and determines their values. For this purpose we build the appropriate Tarski-Lindenbaum algebra and use extensively generating functions. Our method can be generalized to n-valued logics, n > 3, but all computations will be extremely complicated.

Convolutional Neural Network Based Sleep Stage Classification with Class Imbalance

2022

Accurate sleep stage classification is vital to assess sleep quality and diagnose sleep disorders. Numerous deep learning based models have been designed for accomplishing this labor automatically. However, the class imbalance problem existing in polysomnography (PSG) datasets has been barely investigated in previous studies, which is one of the most challenging obstacles for the real-world sleep staging application. To address this issue, this paper proposes novel methods with signal-driven and image-driven ways of noise addition to balance the imbalanced relationship in the training dataset samples. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methods which are integrated into a convolut…

Ultrasound protocol in odontogenic infections: a new proposal

2022

Point-of-care-ultrasound can be applied to preview a difficult airway, detect the presence of fluid collection, and soft-tissue edema, and guide the drainage location, although is rarely used. The purpose of this study is to validate a protocol for the assessment of these clinical features on patients with severe odontogenic infections. This was a single-group prospective cohort study (n=20) including patients with the diagnosis of deep-neck propagation of odontogenic infection. A transcervical linear high-frequency probe transducer (13-6 MHz) was used to scan the structures of the upper airway and the infectious collections. The drainage was guided by ultrasound and the patients were daily…

Dark matter in a charged variant of the Scotogenic model

2022

Scotogenic models are among the most popular possibilities to link dark matter and neutrino masses. In this work we discuss a variant of the Scotogenic model that includes charged fermions and a doublet with hypercharge $3/2$. Neutrino masses are induced at the one-loop level thanks to the states belonging to the dark sector. However, in contrast to the standard Scotogenic model, only the scalar dark matter candidate is viable in this version. After presenting the model and explaining some particularities about neutrino mass generation, we concentrate on its dark matter phenomenology. We show that the observed dark matter relic density can be correctly reproduced in the usual parameter spac…

NBI and Laryngeal Papillomatosis: A Diagnostic Challenge: A Systematic Review.

2022

Narrow-band imaging (NBI) represents a valid aid in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) diagnosis for detecting vascular changes. However, LSCC and laryngeal papillomatosis (LP) show similar vascular patterns that may lead to misdiagnosis and improper treatment. This review aims to deepen this NBI limit in order to stress a careful preoperative evaluation of laryngeal lesions. The research was carried out on PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus databases using specific keywords. The topic of research was assessed by these parameters: accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values. This review included only five articles: they demonstrated that NBI is bette…

MAGEMin, an Efficient Gibbs Energy Minimizer: Application to Igneous Systems

2022

Prediction of stable mineral equilibria in the Earth's lithosphere is critical to unravel the tectonomagmatic history of exposed geological sections. While the recent advances in geodynamic modeling allow us to explore the dynamics of magmatic transfer in solid mediums, there is to date no available thermodynamic package that can easily be linked and efficiently be accounted for the computation of phase equilibrium in magmatic systems. Moreover, none of the existing tools fully exploit single point calculation parallelization, which strongly hinders their applicability for direct geodynamic coupling or for thermodynamic database inversions. Here, we present a new Mineral Assemblage Gibbs En…

2022

The Southern smooth snake, Coronella girondica, is a small-sized colubrid found in Northwest Africa and Southwest Europe. Mitochondrial DNA-based studies showed that the species can be split into five clades: two from Northwest Africa (one Moroccan and one Tunisian-Algerian) and three from Europe (one in the south-west of the Iberian Peninsula, one in the south-east of Spain and one in the rest of the European range). With regards to Italy, to date, only two samples have been analysed both from the Province of Pisa, Tuscany, pointing at that fact that genetic characterisation of Italian populations is still lacking. Accordingly, we have increased the sampling coverage with 19 new samples fr…

Molecular Mechanisms of Inflammasome in Ischemic Stroke Pathogenesis.

2022

Ischemic stroke (also called cerebral ischemia) is one of the leading causes of death and severe disability worldwide. NLR inflammasomes play a crucial role in sensing cell damage in response to a harmful stimuli and modulating the inflammatory response, promoting the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-18 and IL-1β following ischemic injury. Therefore, a neuroprotective effect is achieved by inhibiting the expression, assembly, and secretion of inflammasomes, thus limiting the extent of brain detriment and neurological sequelae. This review aims to illustrate the molecular characteristics, expression levels, and assembly of NLRP3 (nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like…

1D solitons in cubic-quintic fractional nonlinear Schrödinger model

2022

AbstractWe examine the properties of a soliton solution of the fractional Schrö dinger equation with cubic-quintic nonlinearity. Using analytical (variational) and numerical arguments, we have shown that the substitution of the ordinary Laplacian in the Schrödinger equation by its fractional counterpart with Lévy index $$\alpha$$ α permits to stabilize the soliton texture in the wide range of its parameters (nonlinearity coefficients and $$\alpha$$ α ) values. Our studies of $$\omega (N)$$ ω ( N ) dependence ($$\omega$$ ω is soliton frequency and N its norm) permit to acquire the regions of existence and stability of the fractional soliton solution. Effects of solar irradiance noise on a complex marine trophic web

2022

AbstractThe analysis of experimental data of the solar irradiance, collected on the marine surface, clearly highlights the intrinsic stochasticity of such an environmental parameter. Given this result, effects of randomly fluctuating irradiance on the population dynamics of a marine ecosystem are studied on the basis of the stochastic 0-dimensional biogeochemical flux model. The noisy fluctuations of the irradiance are formally described as a multiplicative Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, that is a self-correlated Gaussian noise. Nonmonotonic behaviours of the variance of the marine populations’ biomass are found with respect to the intensity and the autocorrelation time of the noise source, ma…

Linearized Calderón problem and exponentially accurate quasimodes for analytic manifolds

2022

In this article we study the linearized anisotropic Calderon problem on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. This problem amounts to showing that products of pairs of harmonic functions of the manifold form a complete set. We assume that the manifold is transversally anisotropic and that the transversal manifold is real analytic and satisfies a geometric condition related to the geometry of pairs of intersecting geodesics. In this case, we solve the linearized anisotropic Calderon problem. The geometric condition does not involve the injectivity of the geodesic X-ray transform. Crucial ingredients in the proof of our result are the construction of Gaussian beam quasimodes on the tra…

A Quantum Planner for Robot Motion

2022

The possibility of integrating quantum computation in a traditional system appears to be a viable route to drastically improve the performance of systems endowed with artificial intelligence. An example of such processing consists of implementing a teleo-reactive system employing quantum computing. In this work, we considered the navigation of a robot in an environment where its decisions are drawn from a quantum algorithm. In particular, the behavior of a robot is formalized through a production system. It is used to describe the world, the actions it can perform, and the conditions of the robot’s behavior. According to the production rules, the planning of the robot activities is processe…

Time-Constrained Node Visit Planning for Collaborative UAV-WSN Distributed Applications.

2022

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are often studied as tools to perform data collection from Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Path planning is a fundamental aspect of this endeavor. Works in the current literature assume that data are always ready to be retrieved when the UAV passes. This operational model is quite rigid and does not allow for the integration of the UAV as a computational object playing an active role in the network. In fact, the UAV could begin the computation on a first visit and retrieve the data later. Potentially, the UAV could orchestrate the distributed computation to improve its performance, change its parameters, and even upload new applications to the sensor network…

The work moves in the field of applied anthropology and addresses the issue of the resilience of care leavers: young people who, after a long stay within residential structures, are preparing to enter society at the age of eighteen. Considering that resilient processes are not without pitfalls and threats, some conceptual axioms are proposed that are useful for considering the multi-dimensionality and cultural relativity that revolve around the resilient process within residential communities. All this will take place within a socio-cultural research and intervention perspective based on participatory and bottom-up approaches aimed at encouraging negotiation practices and settings between m…

Enhancing the user authentication process with colour memory cues

2022

The authentication process is the first line of defence against potential impostors, and therefore is an important concern when protecting personal and organisational data. Although there are many options to authenticate digital users, passwords remain the most common authentication mechanism. However, with password numbers increasing, many users struggle with remembering multiple passwords, which affects their security behaviour. Previous researchers and practitioners have attempted to suggest ways to improve password memorability and security simultaneously. We introduce novel approach that utilises colour as a memory cue to increase password memorability and security. A longitudinal stud…

Electron transfer between carbon dots and tetranuclear Dawson-derived sandwich polyanions

2022

Among the photocatalysts which could be used for converting solar energy, polyoxometalates are often regarded as ideal candidates because of their remarkable performances in photocatalytic water splitting and photodegradation of pollutants. Nonetheless, these polyanions are only capable of absorbing UV light, unless coupled to a visible-light photosensitizer. Carbon nanodots are especially promising for this purpose because of their strong visible-light absorption, photostability, non-toxicity, and very low production costs. In this work we demonstrate the possibility of coupling carbon dots to polyoxometalates with different structures, by a simple self-assembly approach based on electrost…
