Uterine cervical stenosis: from classification to advances in management. Overcoming the obstacles to access the uterine cavity

2023

Background: To date hysteroscopy is the gold standard technique for the evaluation and management of intrauterine pathologies. The cervical canal represents the access route to the uterine cavity. The presence of cervical stenosis often makes entry into the uterine cavity difficult and occasionally impossible. Cervical stenosis has a multifactorial etiology. It is the result of adhesion processes that can lead to the narrowing or total obliteration of the cervical canal. Purpose: In this review, we summarize the scientific evidence about cervical stenosis, aiming to identify the best strategy to overcome this challenging condition. Methods: The literature review followed the scale for the q…

Intensity interferometry for ultralight bosonic dark matter detection

2023

Ultralight bosonic dark matter (UBDM) can be described by a classical wave-like field oscillating near the Compton frequency of the bosons. If a measurement scheme for the direct detection of UBDM interactions is sensitive to a signature quadratic in the field, then there is a near-zero-frequency (dc) component of the signal. Thus, a detector with a given finite bandwidth can be used to search for bosons with Compton frequencies many orders of magnitude larger than its bandwidth. This opens the possibility of a detection scheme analogous to Hanbury Brown and Twiss intensity interferometry. Assuming that the UBDM is virialized in the galactic gravitational potential, the random velocities pr…

Exploring Heterogeneity with Category and Cluster Analyses for Mixed Data

2023

Precision medicine aims to overcome the traditional one-model-fits-the-whole-population approach that is unable to detect heterogeneous disease patterns and make accurate personalized predictions. Heterogeneity is particularly relevant for patients with complications of type 2 diabetes, including diabetic kidney disease (DKD). We focus on a DKD longitudinal dataset, aiming to find specific subgroups of patients with characteristics that have a close response to the therapeutic treatment. We develop an approach based on some particular concepts of category theory and cluster analysis to explore individualized modelings and achieving insights onto disease evolution. This paper exploits the vi…

THERMOFLUID-DYNAMICS OF DEMO DIVERTOR CASSETTE

2023

The divertor is a critical in-vessel component of nuclear fusion reactors, being responsible for the fulfilment of certain fundamental functions for the machine: it must be able to handle the power deposited by charged particle and neutron irradiation, ensure the presence of channels through which the fusion ashes can be removed from the Vacuum Vessel (VV), provide plasma-compatible surfaces, and shield the VV and magnets from nuclear loads. The heat load that can be tolerated by the divertor under normal and off-normal operating conditions is a pivotal parameter when dimensioning a fusion power plant since exceptionally high heat fluxes can be observed in some regions of the divertor, in t…

IL RICONOSCIMENTO DELLE EMOZIONI FACCIALI NEI DISTURBI PSICOTICI: UNO STUDIO SUI MECCANISMI GENETICI ED EPIGENETICI

2023

Ideals generated by the inner 2-minors of collections of cells

2023

In 2012 Ayesha Asloob Qureshi connected collections of cells to Commutative Algebra assigning to every collection $\mathcal{P}$ of cells the ideal of inner 2-minors, denoted by $I_{\mathcal{P}}$, in the polynomial ring $S_{\mathcal{P}}=K[x_v:v\text{ is a vertex of }\mathcal{P}]$. Investigating the main algebraic properties of $K[\mathcal{P}]=S_{\mathcal{P}}/I_{\mathcal{P}}$ depending on the shape of $\mathcal{P}$ is the purpose of this research. Many problems are still open and they seem to be fascinating and exciting challenges.\\ In this thesis we prove several results about the primality of $I_{\mathcal{P}}$ and the algebraic properties of $K[\mathcal{P}]$ like Cohen-Macaulyness, normali…

2023

Carbonatites are rare magmatic rocks of great scientific and economic importance, and carbonatite magmatism is mainly associated with intraplate continental tectonic settings, with some rare occurrences in oceanic contexts. Despite their importance, many aspects of carbonatite petrogenesis and evolution processes remain still poorly constrained. In order to further constrain the mantle source and the storage system of carbonatite magmas, Fuerteventura (Canary Islands) was taken as a representative case study of oceanic carbonatites, while Mt. Vulture (southern Italy) was taken as a representative case study of intra-continental carbonatites, with a two-fold aim: to understand (i) the role o…

Does taking additional Maths classes in high school affect academic outcomes?

2023

Several studies in the mathematical education literature show the effect of students’ high school skills in maths on their success at higher levels of education and work. In particular, the importance of maths course taking in US high schools is highlighted to be important for college enrolment and completion. The choice of taking additional maths courses or, as in Italy, of choosing a high-school curriculum with more maths, is not random: it depends on several substantial factors such as gender and socio-economic status. This selection bias implies that the differences in the academic outcomes might be traceable not only to mathematics ability and knowledge. In this paper, the aim is to es…

Sicilian semi- and supercentenarians: identification of age-related T cell immunophenotype to define longevity trait

2023

: The immunophenotype of oldest centenarians, i.e., semi- and supercentenarians, could provide important information about their ability to adapt to factors associated with immune changes, including ageing per se and chronic Cytomegalovirus infection. We investigated, by flow cytometry, variations in percentages and absolute numbers of immune cell subsets, focusing on T cells, and pro-inflammatory parameters in a cohort of 28 women and 26 men (age range 19-110 years). We observed variability in hallmarks of immunosenescence related to age and Cytomegalovirus serological status. The eight oldest centenarians showed the lowest percentages of naïve T cells, due to their age, and the highest pe…

On Overcoming the Alleged Alienation between Christianity and Physics

2023

The difference of mindsets is considered the main cause of alienation between Christianity and Physics: trust in high cognitive value of ordinary experience and language (Christianity) versus estimated low cognitive value (Physics). The Catholic tradition encourages to trust into a high cognitive value of ordinary experience and language. As samples are presented a certain ambivalence intrinsic to the method of Physics and a logical mistake that has led to the concept of particle-wave dualism.

The role of polaronic states in the enhancement of CO oxidation by single-atom Pt/CeO2

2023

Single Atom Catalysts (SACs) have shown that the miniaturization of the active site implies new phenomena like dynamic charge transfer between isolated metal atoms and the oxide. To obtain direct proof of this character is challenging, as many experimental techniques provide averaged properties or have limitations with poorly conductive materials, leaving kinetic measurements from catalytic testing as the only reliable reference. Here we present an integrated Density Functional Theory-Microkinetic model including ground and metastable states to address the reactivity of Pt1/CeO2 for CO oxidation. Our results agree with experimentally available kinetic data in the literature and show that CO…

Performance-based research funding: Evidence from the largest natural experiment worldwide

2023

A performance-based research funding system (PRFS) is a nationwide incentive scheme that promotes and rewards university research performance through competition for government funding. The UK’s PRFS, currently the Research Excellence Framework (REF), is considered the oldest, largest and most developed payment-by-results system in academia worldwide. Surprisingly, and despite the strong criticisms, little has been done to quantitatively and casually evaluate the intended and unintended effects of the PRFSs. In this paper, we evaluate the incremental impact of the REF 2014 in the fields of Economics and Business. We use a synthetic control method to compare the performance of UK universitie…

Small-time bilinear control of Schrödinger equations with application to rotating linear molecules

2023

In [14] Duca and Nersesyan proved a small-time controllability property of nonlinear Schrödinger equations on a d-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^d$. In this paper we study a similar property, in the linear setting, starting from a closed Riemannian manifold. We then focus on the 2-dimensional sphere $S^2$, which models the bilinear control of a rotating linear top: as a corollary, we obtain the approximate controllability in arbitrarily small times among particular eigenfunctions of the Laplacian of $S^2$.

Z-Scan theory for thin film measurements: Validation of a model beyond the standard approach using ITO and HfO2

2023

The Z-Scan technique is an easy and widespread approach to evaluate the nonlinear optical coefficient of materials. However, the evaluation of the same coefficients for thin films requires complex experimental setups that allow to remove the contributions of the substrate. Here, we propose a simple, yet effective, theoretical approach that allows to include the substrate contribution to the focusing effect when scanning along the propagation axis. The proposed method therefore removes the need of complex experimental setups and paves the way for a simpler retrieval of optical properties of complex nanostructures.

Review of carbon emissions offsetting guidelines using instructional criteria

2023

Abstract Purpose Carbon offsetting is one of the tools that companies can use to achieve their climate targets. The ability of a company to offset its emissions successfully depends on the availability and quality of guidance on the subject. This study explores how well existing offsetting guidelines equip corporations to achieve successful emissions offsetting. Methods Instructional criteria were developed and used to evaluate seven guidelines. The contents of each guideline were assessed based on how they instruct a company to achieve emissions offsetting that fulfills five criteria for appropriate offsetting: target affiliation, Paris compatibility, effectiveness, prioritizing removals, …

Various types of floating solar photovoltaic (FPV) devices have been previously proposed, designed and constructed with applications primarily limited to onshore water bodies or nearshore regions with benign environmental conditions. This paper proposes a novel FPV concept which can survive harsh environmental conditions with extreme wave heights above 10 m. This concept uses standardised lightweight semi-submersible floats made of circular materials as individual modules. The floating modules are soft connected with ropes to form an FPV array. We first present the conceptual design of the floats and the connection systems, including hydrostatic, hydrodynamic, and structural assessments of …

Experimental Tests to Validate a Simple Procedure to Design Dual-Diameter Drip Laterals on Flat Fields

2023

Multiple-diameter laterals reduce the total cost in microirrigation systems, however, the length of each sublateral should be determined carefully to assure appro-priate performance of emitter flow rates. The most accurate method is the numerical trial and error, which is time-consuming. A series of research efforts have been made to propose simple analytical design procedures. By using the power-law form of the Darcy-Weisbach formula, and equal emitters spacing for the sublaterals, Sadeghi et al. (Sadeghi et al. in J Irrig Drain E-ASCE 142:04,016,020, 2016) extended a previously introduced design solution for one-diameter laterals to tapered laterals. Recently, a simplified procedure to de…
