Aging and chronic inflammation: highlights from a multidisciplinary workshop

2023

Abstract: Aging is a gradual, continuous series of natural changes in biological, physiological, immunological, environmental, psychological, behavioral, and social processes. Aging entails changes in the immune system characterized by a decrease in thymic output of naïve lymphocytes, an accumulated chronic antigenic stress notably caused by chronic infections such as cytomegalovirus (CMV), and immune cell senescence with acquisition of an inflammatory senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). For this reason, and due to the SASP originating from other tissues, aging is commonly accompanied by low-grade chronic inflammation, termed “inflammaging”. After decades of accumulating evide…

Alternative Systems: The Interplay between Criminal Groups’ Influence and Political Trust on Civic Honesty in the Global Context

2023

Individuals’ endorsement of standards of civic honesty is necessary for democracies to flourish. A critical driver of civic honesty is the relationship of trust between individuals and institutions. Research has yet to systematically assess the contextual factors that may moderate this relationship. In the present study, we examined the societal influence of organized criminal groups. Criminal groups operate as alternative systems of authority that erode the reliability of institutions' moral standards. We employed a new indicator that quantifies their societal influence to test the hypothesis that the association between individuals’ political trust and civic honesty would weaken in countr…

Polysaccharide-based supramolecular bicomponent eutectogels as sustainable antioxidant materials

2023

In this work, we obtained supramolecular gels in deep eutectic solvents (DES) from polysaccharides like chitosan and chitosan : cellulose composites. We thoroughly characterized our gels by determining the minimum gelation concentration, as well as their porosity and swelling. We also investigated their mechanical properties by rheology, and morphology by scanning electron measurements. These properties were mainly influenced by the number of hydrogen bond sites on the hydrogen bond donor, (HBD), while FTIR-ATR investigation suggested that, upon gelation, cholinium cations interpose between polysaccharide chains affecting interchain hydrogen bonding. Our gels also exhibited self-healing and…

Evoluzione del ruolo del Presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri e riforme istituzionali

2023

The parliamentary form of government, lacking adequate stabilizing elements, generates inefficiencies and institutional dysfunctions. The changes that it has undergone have determined new balances between powers, which favor the Executive, and, within this, the monocratic role of the President of the Council of Ministers. These changes highlight even more the need to carry out institutional reforms that rationalize the strengthening of the head of government, providing for suitable counterweights, and restructuring the relationship of trust in order to ensure its stability.

Background: Diabetic foot is a significant cause of morbidity in diabetic patients, with a rate that is approximatelytwice that of patients without foot ulcers. “Metabolic memory” represents the epigenetic changes induced by chronic hyperglycaemia, despite the correction of the glucose levels themselves. These epigenetic modifications appear to perpetuate the damage caused by persistently elevated glucose levels even in their absence, acting at various levels, mostly affecting the molecular processes of diabetic ulcer healing. Methods: The aim of our cross-sectional study was to analyse a cohort of patients with diabetes with and without lower limb ulcers. We examined the effects of epigene…

A numerical recipe for the computation of stationary stochastic processes' autocorrelation function

2023

Many natural phenomena exhibit a stochastic nature that one attempts at modeling by using stochastic processes of different types. In this context, often one is interested in investigating the memory properties of the natural phenomenon at hand. This is usually accomplished by computing the autocorrelation function of the numerical series describing the considered phenomenon. Often, especially when considering real world data, the autocorrelation function must be computed starting from a single numerical series: i.e. with a time-average approach. Hereafter, we will propose a novel way of evaluating the time-average autocorrelation function, based on the preliminary evaluation of the quantit…

The Cyclicality of Bank Credit Losses and Capital Ratios under Expected Loss Model

2023

We model the evolution of stylised bank loan portfolios to assess the impact of IFRS 9 and US GAAP expected loss model (ECL) on the cyclicality of loan loss provisions (LLPs), realised losses and capital ratios of banks, relative to the incurred loss model of IAS 39. We focus on the interaction between the changes in LLPs charges (the flow channel) and stocks (the stock channel) under ECL. Our results show that, when GDP growth doesn’t demonstrate high volatility, ECL model smooths the impact of credit losses on profits and capital resources, reducing the pro-cyclicality of capital and leverage ratios, especially under US GAAP. However, when GDP growth is highly volatile, the large differen…

Azulene as a biphenyl mimetic in orexin/hypocretin receptor agonists

2023

Azulene is a rare ring structure in drugs, and we investigated whether it could be used as a biphenyl mimetic in known orexin receptor agonist Nag 26, which is binding to both orexin receptors OX1 and OX2 with preference towards OX2. The most potent azulene-based compound was identified as an OX1 orexin receptor agonist (pEC50 = 5.79 +/- 0.07, maximum response = 81 +/- 8% (s.e.m. of five independent experiments) of the maximum response to orexin-A in Ca2+ elevation assay). However, the azulene ring and the biphenyl scaffold are not identical in their spatial shape and electron distribution, and their derivatives may adopt different binding modes in the binding site. Hybrid Identities of Development Studies in Tanzania

2023

This article addresses identities, hierarchies of knowledge and power relations in academia in postcolonial settings, in the context of development studies in Tanzania. Based on literatures on organizational identity and postcolonial hybridity, it establishes a conceptual lens of hybrid identity, scrutinizing how the identity of the discipline of development studies is constructed. Based on analysis of interviews with staff in development studies, we identify four relationships where differences and asymmetries were articulated: with other disciplines, with past development studies, with global theorizing on development, and with partners in the global North. We conclude in discussing how a…

Cardinal inequalities involving the Hausdorff pseudocharacter

2023

We establish several bounds on the cardinality of a topological space involving the Hausdorff pseudocharacter $H\psi(X)$. This invariant has the property $\psi_c(X)\leq H\psi(X)\leq\chi(X)$ for a Hausdorff space $X$. We show the cardinality of a Hausdorff space $X$ is bounded by $2^{pwL_c(X)H\psi(X)}$, where $pwL_c(X)\leq L(X)$ and $pwL_c(X)\leq c(X)$. This generalizes results of Bella and Spadaro, as well as Hodel. We show additionally that if $X$ is a Hausdorff linearly Lindel\"of space such that $H\psi(X)=\omega$, then $|X|\le 2^\omega$, under the assumption that either $2^{<\mathfrak{c}}=\mathfrak{c}$ or $\mathfrak{c}<\aleph_\omega$. Zoological Checklists: From Natural History Museums to Ecosystems

2023

Backwards and forwards at once, the zoological checklists bring the past into the present and draw a direction towards the future. They cover historical and current information providing open data for environmental issues. The present-day research framework aims to produce papers reporting lists of animal species, after a couple of decades of absolute refusal of such inventories, years where the prevalence of studies has been focused on ecological or molecular statistics. Now, the contemporary era is moving towards the gathering of organized data, shared on web platforms, and cross-linked in a sort of global metadata outcome. It means that a single record of the occurrence of a species can …

New opportunities for kaonic atoms measurements from CdZnTe detectors

2023

We present the tests performed by the SIDDHARTA-2 collaboration at the DA{\Phi}NE collider with a quasi-hemispherical CdZnTe detector. The very good room-temperature energy resolution and efficiency in a wide energy range show that this detector technology is ideal for studying radiative transitions in intermediate and heavy-mass kaonic atoms. The CdZnTe detector was installed for the first time in an accelerator environment to perform tests on the background rejection capabilities, which were achieved by exploiting the SIDDHARTA-2 Luminosity Monitor. A spectrum with an $^{241}Am$ source has been acquired, with beams circulating in the main rings, and peak resolutions of 6% at 60 keV and of…

Unsatisfactory outcomes for relapsed/refractory lymphoma patients prompt continuing efforts to develop new therapeutic strategies. Our previous studies on pyrrole-based anti-lymphoma agents led us to synthesize a new series of twenty-six pyrrolo[3′,4':3,4]cyclohepta[1,2-d] [1,2]oxazole derivatives and study their antiproliferative effects against a panel of four non-Hodgkin lymphoma cell lines. Several candidates showed significant anti-proliferative effects, with IC50's reaching the sub-micromolar range in at least one cell line, with compound 3z demonstrating sub-micromolar growth inhibitory effects towards the entire panel. The VL51 cell line was the most sensitive, with an IC50 value of…

Adaptation to local conditions is known to occur in seagrasses; however, knowledge of the genetic basis underlying this phenomenon remains scarce. Here, we analysed Posidonia oceanica from six sites within and around the Stagnone di Marsala, a semi-enclosed coastal lagoon where salinity and temperature exceed the generally described tolerance thresholds of the species. Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) were measured and plant samples were collected for the assessment of morphology, flowering rate and for screening genome-wide polymorphisms using double digest restriction-site-associated DNA sequencing. Results demonstrated more extreme SSTs and salinity levels inside the lagoon than the outer…

Iron-mediated oxidative stress induces PD-L1 expression via activation of c-Myc in lung adenocarcinoma

2023

Introduction: The PD-1/PD-L1 axis is hijacked by lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) cells to escape immune surveillance. PD-L1 expression in LUAD is affected, among others, by the metabolic trafficking between tumor cells and the tumor microenvironment (TME). Methods: Correlation between PD-L1 expression and iron content within the TME was established on FFPE LUAD tissue samples. The effects of an iron rich microenvironment on PD-L1 mRNA and protein levels were assessed in vitro in H460 and A549 LUAD by using qPCR, western blot and flow citometry. c-Myc knockdown was performed to validate the role of this transcription factor on PD-L1 expression.
