The dark side of phubbing in the workplace: Investigating the role of intrinsic motivation and the use of enterprise social media (ESM) in a cross-cu…

2022

Despite the increasing phenomena of supervisor phubbing (a counterproductive workplace behaviour of managers), very few studies have explored its outcomes in organisations. This study aims to bridge this gap by investigating the relationships between supervisor phubbing and key employee outcomes. We conducted two studies in cross-cultural settings. In Study 1, which was conducted in Pakistan (a collectivistic culture), we collected 370 useable responses through an online survey from the employees working in the service sector organisations. Study 2, which was conducted in the United States of America (an individualistic culture), utilised the Prolific data collection service to gather 352 r…

The role of psychological inflexibility in adolescent satisfaction with the educational track and school dropout intentions

2022

This study aimed to obtain novel understanding of the associations between psychological inflexibility and adolescents' engagement with upper secondary studies. The participants were 885 Finnish adolescents (mean age 15.74 at the outset) whose psychological inflexibility was measured with the short form of the Acceptance and Fusion Questionnaire for Youth (AFQ-Y8) in the fall of the final (ninth) grade of basic education. School engagement was measured as satisfaction with the educational track and as school dropout intentions, and they were measured twice in the first study year after the transition to upper secondary education. The results showed that high psychological inflexibility in t…

Yeast interaction on Chardonnay wine composition: Impact of strain and inoculation time.

2022

Abstract It is of great importance to understand the molecular characteristics and substantial chemical transformations due to yeast-yeast interaction. Non-targeted metabolomics was used to unravel must in fermentation composition, inoculated with non-Saccharomyces (NS) yeasts and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S) for sequential fermentation. ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry was able to distinguish thousands of metabolites and provides deep insights into grape must composition allowing better understanding of the yeast-yeast interactome. The dominance of S, characterized by a metabolic richness not found with NS, is dependent on inoculation time and on the yeast species present. Co-inocula…

The Emerging Role of Dual GLP-1 and GIP Receptor Agonists in Glycemic Management and Cardiovascular Risk Reduction

2022

The incretin pathway is a self-regulating feedback system connecting the gut with the brain, pancreas, and liver. Its predominant action is on the postprandial glucose levels, with extraglycemic effects on fat metabolism and endovascular function. Of the two main incretin hormones released with food ingestion, the actions of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) have been exploited for therapeutic benefit. However, little attention has been paid to glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) until the recent experimental introduction of dual agonists, or "twincretins". Interestingly, simultaneous activation of both receptors is not only replicative of normal physiology, it seems to be an i…

Isometric factorization of vector measures and applications to spaces of integrable functions

2022

Let $X$ be a Banach space, $\Sigma$ be a $\sigma$-algebra, and $m:\Sigma\to X$ be a (countably additive) vector measure. It is a well known consequence of the Davis-Figiel-Johnson-Pelczýnski factorization procedure that there exist a reflexive Banach space $Y$, a vector measure $\tilde{m}:\Sigma \to Y$ and an injective operator $J:Y \to X$ such that $m$ factors as $m=J\circ \tilde{m}$. We elaborate some theory of factoring vector measures and their integration operators with the help of the isometric version of the Davis-Figiel-Johnson-Pelczýnski factorization procedure. Along this way, we sharpen a result of Okada and Ricker that if the integration operator on $L_1(m)$ is weakly compact, t…

Enlarged PLIN5-uncoated lipid droplets in inner regions of skeletal muscle type II fibers associate with type 2 diabetes

2022

Skeletal muscle physiology remains of paramount importance in understanding insulin resistance. Due to its high lipid turnover rates, regulation of intramyocellular lipid droplets (LDs) is a key factor. Perilipin 5 (PLIN5) is one of the most critical agents in such regulation, being often referred as a protector against lipotoxicity and consequent skeletal muscle insulin resistance. We examined area fraction, size, subcellular localization and PLIN5 association of LDs in two fiber types of type 2 diabetic (T2D), obese (OB) and healthy (HC) individuals by means of fluorescence microscopy and image analysis. We found that T2D type II fibers have a significant sub-population of large and inter…

Challenge Demands and Resilience

2022

Abstract. This study investigates the relationship of challenge demands (i. e., time pressure, job complexity) on employee resilience. We provide insights into potential pathways (i. e., learning, cognitive irritation) for how challenge stressors influence employee resilience. We employed a two-wave, time-lagged design to examine the influences of challenge stressors and explanatory pathways on employee resilience 2 months later. The data from 359 participants (52.1 % male) were analyzed using a Bayesian time-lagged path model. Results indicate that time pressure and job complexity are negatively related to employee resilience via cognitive irritation. In contrast, we found a positive, ind…

Participation in sociolinguistic research

2022

Involving speakers in research on their linguistic practices has been at the core of sociolinguistics since the inception of the field. In contrast to social sciences, however, sociolinguists have rarely addressed the issues surrounding the participation of those involved and engaged in the research process. This paper aims at reviewing the state of the art and outlining critical dimensions and aspects with relation to participation. We explore previous studies and study designs with the help of the following questions: Who has been involved? How and with what impact have stakeholders participated in different strands of sociolinguistic research? Current developments are presented and revie…

Adaptive ML-based technique for renewable energy system power forecasting in hybrid PV-Wind farms power conversion systems

2022

Large scale integration of renewable energy system with classical electrical power generation system requires a precise balance to maintain and optimize the supply–demand limitations in power grids operations. For this purpose, accurate forecasting is needed from wind energy conversion systems (WECS) and solar power plants (SPPs). This daunting task has limits with long-short term and precise term forecasting due to the highly random nature of environmental conditions. This paper offers a hybrid variational decomposition model (HVDM) as a revolutionary composite deep learning-based evolutionary technique for accurate power production forecasting in microgrid farms. The objective is to obtai…

GPR 3D model in the area of the San Nicola church, Misterbianco (Sicily)

2022

Abstract In 1669 the most destructive eruption on Etna volcano was recorded since historical times (about 700 BCE), whose lava flow destroyed completely the ancient town of Misterbianco, located on the southern slope of Mount Etna. San Nicola church is one of the three churches that historically were covered by lava flow. In the 1980s, some works for the construction of a parking lot allowed to discover an ancient wall belonging to the church. Some georadar prospections were carried out in the investigated area finalized to reconstruct the planimetric development of the ancient church and to direct future excavation works.

Activated carbon from hydrolysis lignin: Effect of activation method on carbon properties

2022

This study presents the effects of different activation methods to produce activated carbon from the hydrolysis lignin. Pretreatment of the feedstock with common mineral acids (HCL, HNO3, and H3PO4), different steam rates for physical activation, and different chemical activating agents (ZnCl2, Na2CO3, and KOH) for chemical activation were investigated. The pretreated biomass was carbonized and activated in one-stage process and the surface characteristics, such as total pore volume, pore size distribution and specific surface area, were investigated. The results showed that the activated carbon surface properties were not greatly affected by acid pretreatment. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) …

Click amidations, esterifications and one–pot reactions catalyzed by Cu salts and multimetal–organic frameworks (M–MOFs)

2022

Amides and esters are prevalent chemicals in Nature, industry and academic laboratories. Thus, it is not surprising that a plethora of synthetic methods for these compounds has been developed along the years. However, these methods are not 100% atom economical and generally require harsh reagents or reaction conditions. Here we show a “spring–loaded”, 100% atom–efficient amidation and esterification protocol which consists in the ring opening of cyclopropenones with amines or alcohols. Some alkyl amines react spontaneously at room temperature in a variety of solvents and reaction conditions, including water at different pHs, while other alkyl amines, aromatic amines and alcohols react in th…

Genetic integrity of European wildcats: Variation across biomes mandates geographically tailored conservation strategies

2022

Hybridisation between domestic and wild taxa can pose severe threats to wildlife conservation, and human-induced hybridisation, often linked to species' introductions and habitat degradation, may promote reproductive opportunities between species for which natural interbreeding would be highly unlikely. Using a biome-specific approach, we examine the effects of a suite of ecological drivers on the European wildcat's genetic integrity, while assessing the role played by protected areas in this process. We used genotype data from 1217 putative European wildcat samples from 13 European countries to assess the effects of landcover, disturbance and legal landscape protection on the European wild…

2022

This study investigates how schoolchildren organise their spatial and epistemic ‘territories’ among peer groups to constitute local social and moral orders in open learning environments. Open learning environments, the result of recent school reforms in Finland, challenge the conventional organisation of traditional classrooms. We use a microanalysis of naturally occurring video-recorded interactions to show the interactional dynamics of how children produce epistemic and spatial territories by creating moment-by-moment unfolding participation frameworks and emotional alliances. We suggest that the lack of institutional structures in open learning environments withholds children from the te…

Sediment transport mechanisms and selective removal of soil particles under unsteady-state conditions in a sheet erosion system

2022

Abstract Selective removal of particles and nutrients by water erosion is a key factor in soil erosion studies. Most agricultural soils are located on gentle slopes where fertility is high; however, until now, the main attention on sediment transport mechanisms was paid to high-slope gradients, where soil erosion is intense, but soils are less productive. Despite the importance of sediment size distribution (SSD) and transport mechanisms under unsteady-state conditions, few studies have been done on this issue. Higher sediment concentrations in the early stages of the runoff indicate the need to deal with unsteady-state conditions. To address this issue, sheet erosion experiments were done …

2022

Greater uptake of active transport has been argued as necessary for the transport system to achieve relevant sustainability and public health goals; however, the research tools used to investigate behaviour when using these modes are far less well-developed than those used to investigate driving behaviour. This study takes two self-report behavioural measures, the Walking Behaviour Questionnaire (WBQ) and the Cycling Behaviour Questionnaire (WBQ), and pilots them in the UK. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses with data from 428 respondents revealed factor structures different to those described in the limited number of previous studies that used the CBQ and WBQ. La partecipazione popolare al procedimento legislativo prevista dallo Statuto: vincolo giuridico o politico-parlamentare?

2022

This paper aims to analyze the participation of organized interests in the legislative process, disciplined by the article 12.3 of the Sicilian Statute. The results of the research show that no other regional statute, and not even the Rules of procedure of the two chambers of the Parliament, adopts the same mechanism of participation. The Sicilian Statute can be considered an interesting example of how the decision- making process can include organized interests as already experimented with the public debate on large infrastructures.

Differences in the Assessment of Safe and Risky Driving Behaviors: Pedestrians Versus Drivers

2022

Interactions between pedestrians and drivers are an important traffic safety issue. Psycho-social factors such as thoughts, perceptions and attitudes toward other people can be reliable predictors of riskier or safer behaviors among road users. The aim of this study was to assess how frequently participants perceive that drivers perform safe and risky road behaviors through drivers’ self-reported behavior and pedestrians and other drivers’ external perceptions. The results show that pedestrians assess the road behaviors of drivers in a seriously negative way. Meanwhile, drivers perceive their own behaviors as more appropriate than those performed by the rest of drivers. Women attribute mor…

Macrophage MerTK promotes profibrogenic cross-talk with hepatic stellate cells via soluble mediators

2022

Background & aims: Activation of Kupffer cells and recruitment of monocytes are key events in fibrogenesis. These cells release soluble mediators which induce the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), the main fibrogenic cell type within the liver. Mer tyrosine kinase (MerTK) signaling regulates multiple processes in macrophages and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis-related fibrosis. In this study, we explored if MerTK activation in macrophages influences the profibrogenic phenotype of HSCs. Methods: Macrophages were derived from THP-1 cells or differentiated from peripheral blood monocytes towards MerTK+/CD206+/CD163+/CD209- macrophages. Th…

Four-Year Environmental Surveillance Program of Legionella spp. in One of Palermo’s Largest Hospitals

2022

Legionella is a ubiquitous bacterium that lives in freshwater environments and colonizes human-made water systems. Legionella pneumophila is the most virulent species, and risk factors for Legionnaires’ disease include increasing age, smoking, chronic diseases, and immunodeficiency. For this reason, it is very important to assess and monitor hospital water systems in order to prevent legionellosis. We have monitored a large hospital in Palermo for four years. To determine the presence of microorganisms, according to national guidelines, we used the culture method, which is considered the gold standard for Legionella detection. Sampling was divided into five macro-areas, and a total of 251 s…

Management diversity begets biodiversity in production forest landscapes

2022

How to manage forest for biodiversity conservation is an ongoing debate. We argue that maximizing biodiversity in managed forest landscapes requires a diversity of forest management regimes in space and time. This will generate high levels of habitat heterogeneity at a landscape scale, which in turn will support various groups of forest species. Based on concepts from landscape ecology, we formulate five hypotheses on how management diversity, i.e. combining various management approaches can benefit overall biodiversity across a production forest landscape. First, management diversity will increase habitat diversity and, therefore, beta diversity (the habitat diversity hypothesis). Second, …
