Diffractive scattering at next-to-leading order in the dipole picture
2023
We discuss recent developments towards next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in the dipole picture. We review recent NLO results for exclusive vector meson production and diffractive structure functions, and discuss how it is becoming possible to describe both inclusive and exclusive DIS data simultaneously within the Color Glass Condensate framework at NLO accuracy. These developments will make it possible to probe the gluon saturation phenomena in detail especially when nuclear-DIS data from the EIC become available.
Contrastive Transformer: Contrastive Learning Scheme with Transformer innate Patches
2023
This paper presents Contrastive Transformer, a contrastive learning scheme using the Transformer innate patches. Contrastive Transformer enables existing contrastive learning techniques, often used for image classification, to benefit dense downstream prediction tasks such as semantic segmentation. The scheme performs supervised patch-level contrastive learning, selecting the patches based on the ground truth mask, subsequently used for hard-negative and hard-positive sampling. The scheme applies to all vision-transformer architectures, is easy to implement, and introduces minimal additional memory footprint. Additionally, the scheme removes the need for huge batch sizes, as each patch is t…
“I love learning new things” : An institutional logics perspective on learning in professional journalism
2023
In contemporary working life, journalists are often faced with the pressures of an increasingly precarious field where employment is less stable and more contractual than in previous years. Consequently, learning as a skill has grown in importance as journalists enter and leave the job market. Previous research has often portrayed professional journalists as unwilling to learn due to the persistence of the institution of journalism. Consequently, this study examines learning in professional journalism through interviews with 30 Finnish journalists. We adopt the institutional logics perspective to examine which institutional logics manifest in journalists' descriptions of learning and how. W…
Coupling of iron and dissolved organic matter in lakes–selective retention of different size fractions
2023
AbstractIncreasing concentration of iron (Fe) is observed in many boreal lakes, such as for the present study in Oslo Østmark, SE-Norway (1983–2018). As Fe-regulating processes are complex and dynamic, the link between mobilizing and retention processes is still not well understood. A seasonal study (2017–2018) from two headwaters, with medium and high dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentrations, showed that the loading of Fe to the lakes was highly dependent on flow conditions. Significantly higher values of Fe were related to autumn and winter periods with high runoff of highly colored and aromatic DOM compared to a severe drought period with minimum Fe values in the lakes. Compared to …
Back Pain: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment
2023
Although back pain is one of the most common medical conditions [1], with a reported general population prevalence close to 50% along their lifetime in a long-term British survey [2], it does not attract the interest it should from the general population [3], political powers [4,5] and scientific community [6]. Patients keep coming to our offices for a surgical solution to their back pain, hoping that a miraculous operation will solve all their problems [3,7]. Yet, the surgical procedure sometimes does not solve the problem, and it can be the cause of a new nightmare in one third of patients [8,9]. A Japanese study found that 95% of their patients had persistent back pain after surgery at t…
Association between multidimensional prognostic index (MPI) and infections in a population of older people affected by COVID-19
2023
Background: Only limited studies analyzed a possible relationship between frailty and infections. Our aim was to investigate the possible association between higher multidimensional prognostic index (MPI) values, a tool for evaluating multidimensional frailty, and the prevalence of infectious diseases, including antibiotics' cost and the prevalence of MDR (multidrug resistance) pathogens. Methods: Older patients, affected by COVID-19, were enrolled in the hospital of Palermo over four months. Results: 112 participants (mean age 77.6, 55.4% males) were included. After adjusting for potential confounders, frailer participants had a higher odds of any positivity to pathogens (prevalence: 61.5%…
The Nutraceutical Properties of Rhus coriaria Linn: Potential Application on Human Health and Aging Biomedicine
2023
Rhus coriaria Linn is a little plant growing in the Mediterranean basin, including Sicily, where it is known as Sicilian Sumac. Since antiquity, it has been used as a medicinal herb, considering its pharmacological properties and its recognized anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects. Multiple studies have highlighted that the beneficial properties of Sumac extracts depend on the abundance of phytochemicals such as polyphenols, fatty acids, minerals, and fibers. Despite its wide use as a spice, the literature on Sumac effects on humans’ health and aging is still scarce. Considering its great nutraceutical potential, Sumac could be used to treat age-related diseases such as…
Algoritmi viventi tra Shannon e Simondon
2023
Almost a century after Turing’s machine was theorised, a formal definition of what an algorithm is has still not been found by scholars. The reasons given are varied and it is clear that this is a problem that is not easy to solve. Nevertheless, one of the least travelled paths is the one that envisages the hypothesis of an algorithm that does not exhaust its potential in automatism. Starting from the algorithm written and implemented by the mathematician Claude Shannon in the 1950s in a machine made up of a group of relays, a mouse-shaped sensor and a maze structured in squares, the following work aims to understand whether a certain creative and evolutionary capacity can be found in…
Shifting Long-Term Tillage to Geotextile Mulching for Weed Control Improves Soil Quality and Yield of Orange Orchards
2023
Weed control in urban and peri-urban orange orchards is challenging due to operational and legislative restrictions. Tillage, besides from negatively affecting soil fertility and microorganisms, is demanding for humans. On the other hand, herbicides are advised against due to the possibility to reach waterbodies from the soil surface. Therefore, in urban and peri-urban areas, instead of tillage and herbicides, mulching with black plastic geotextile fabric is often used. This study aimed at assessing the impact of long-term soil mulching with black plastic geotextile fabric on soil fertility, microbial community and yield of an orange orchard in comparison to conventional tillage. To this ai…
Verifying Properties of Tsetlin Machines
2023
Tsetlin Machines (TsMs) are a promising and interpretable machine learning method which can be applied for various classification tasks. We present an exact encoding of TsMs into propositional logic and formally verify properties of TsMs using a SAT solver. In particular, we introduce in this work a notion of similarity of machine learning models and apply our notion to check for similarity of TsMs. We also consider notions of robustness and equivalence from the literature and adapt them for TsMs. Then, we show the correctness of our encoding and provide results for the properties: adversarial robustness, equivalence, and similarity of TsMs. In our experiments, we employ the MNIST and IMDB …
GaN and SiC Device Characterization by a Dedicated Embedded Measurement System
2023
This work proposes a comparison among GaN and SiC device main parameters measured with a dedicated and low-cost embedded system, employing an STM32 microcontroller designed to the purpose. The system has the advantage to avoid the use of expensive laboratory measurement equipment to test the devices, allowing to obtain their behavior in operating conditions. The following KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are measured and critically compared: threshold voltage, on-resistance and input capacitance. All the measurements are carried out in a short time interval and on a wide range of switching frequencies, ranging from 10 kHz to 1 MHz. This investigation is focused on the deviation of the figu…
Evolution of Pediatric Migraine Patients Admitted at an Emergency Department after a 10-Year Follow-Up
2023
Background: Despite its high prevalence, the clinical course of pediatric migraine has not been fully understood, and previous studies present conflicting results. We present here the findings of a 10-year follow-up study involving children with severe migraine pain admitted to our emergency department. Furthermore, all studies were carried out on selected outpatient clinical case studies. Our aim was to evaluate a population of migraine children admitted to an emergency department because of increased severity or frequency of pain or even because of very anxious parents concerning their child’s headache in order to describe their long-term outcomes, whether it differed from that of o…
Machine learning-based spin structure detection
2023
One of the most important magnetic spin structure is the topologically stabilised skyrmion quasi-particle. Its interesting physical properties make them candidates for memory and efficient neuromorphic computation schemes. For the device operation, detection of the position, shape, and size of skyrmions is required and magnetic imaging is typically employed. A frequently used technique is magneto-optical Kerr microscopy where depending on the samples material composition, temperature, material growing procedures, etc., the measurements suffer from noise, low-contrast, intensity gradients, or other optical artifacts. Conventional image analysis packages require manual treatment, and a more a…

Convolutional Neural Networks for the classification of glitches in gravitational-wave data streams
2023
We investigate the use of Convolutional Neural Networks (including the modern ConvNeXt network family) to classify transient noise signals (i.e.~glitches) and gravitational waves in data from the Advanced LIGO detectors. First, we use models with a supervised learning approach, both trained from scratch using the Gravity Spy dataset and employing transfer learning by fine-tuning pre-trained models in this dataset. Second, we also explore a self-supervised approach, pre-training models with automatically generated pseudo-labels. Our findings are very close to existing results for the same dataset, reaching values for the F1 score of 97.18% (94.15%) for the best supervised (self-supervised) m…
Performance changes during repeated military occupational test and its associations to physical performance
2023
The present study investigated performance changes during three runs (1 min recovery) of repeated military simulation task test (RMST) and its associations with physical performance. Voluntary male soldiers (N = 114) participated in a series of measurements of physical performance. Lower body explosive force production, anaerobic endurance and upper body strength endurance together explained 58% of the variance in the first RSMT (p < 0.001). The same variables explained the variance in the second and third runs of RSMT by 60% and 51%, but explosive force production was replaced with aerobic endurance, assessed by the 3.2 km loaded run (p < 0.001). This study demonstrated that the role of ex…
Operational Quantum Reference Frame Transformations
2023
We provide a general, operational, and rigorous basis for quantum reference frames and their transformations using covariant positive operator valued measures to represent frame observables. The framework holds for locally compact groups and differs from all prior proposals for frame changes, being built around the notion of operational equivalence, in which states that cannot be distinguished physically are identified. This allows for the construction of the space of (invariant) relative observables and the convex set of relative states as dual objects. By demanding a further equivalence relation on the relative states which takes into account the nature of the frames, we provide a quantum…
First record of Anisian deposits in the Betic External Zone of southern Spain and its paleogeographical implications
2023
In the External Zones of the Betic Cordillera (S Spain), upper Muschelkalk (Ladinian) facies have been known for decades; however, so far there is no stratigraphic record of Anisian deposits. In the present study, new biostratigraphic data from a carbonate succession in the easternmost Subbetic domain reveal a Pelsonian-Illyrian (Anisian) age. The nautiloids Germanonautilus salinarius and Germanonautilus saharonicus are documented for the first time in the Iberian Peninsula, and together with the brachiopod Tetractinella trigonella and the bivalves Neoschizodus orbicularis and Myophoria vulgaris they represent marker fossils of Anisian deposits previously described from many other basins, b…
Multiorbital exciton formation in an organic semiconductor
2023
Harnessing the optoelectronic response of organic semiconductors requires a thorough understanding of the fundamental light-matter interaction that is dominated by the excitation of correlated electron-hole pairs, i.e. excitons. The nature of these excitons would be fully captured by knowing the quantum-mechanical wavefunction, which, however, is difficult to access both theoretically and experimentally. Here, we use femtosecond photoemission orbital tomography in combination with many-body perturbation theory to gain access to exciton wavefunctions in organic semiconductors. We find that the coherent sum of multiple electron-hole pair contributions that typically make up a single exciton c…
Negacionismo (concepto)
2023
Denialism is a social phenomenon that has gained relevance in public debate thanks to the digital context. The expression designates a systematic rejection of scientific or historical evidence, which seeks to influence public opinion to favor certain interests. The purpose of this work is, on the one hand, to characterize the denial phenomenon and, on the other, to offer an overview of the heterogeneity of substantive repertoires, narratives, purposes and underlying interests. To do this, we will analyze Holocaust denialism and climate denialism, as models of more sophisticated denialist discourses. Keywords Denialism, scientific evidence, typologies of denial, Holocaust, climate change. El…

The Switch to Online Learning during the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Interplay between Personality and Mental Health on University Students
2023
The switching from traditional to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic was challenging for students, determining an increase in physical and mental health problems. The current paper applied a two-step cluster analysis in a large sample of n = 1028 university students (Mage = 21.10 years, SD = 2.45 years; range: 18–30 years; 78.4% females). Participants responded to an online survey exploring neuroticism, trait/state anxiety, general self-efficacy, academic motivation, fear of COVID-19, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on physical and mental health, and the help requests. Results showed two significant clusters of students having a Maladaptive Academic Profile (n = 456; 44.4%) or…
Così reale da poter essere immaginato: il ruolo dell’immaginazione sociologica e i “fatti sociali” globali
2023
The understanding of contemporary economic geographies and global “social facts” represent the best challenge for Burawoy’s public sociology. Scholars wonder whether sociology can successfully address our time’s problems, keeping its spirit of service to the community alive. Indeed, recent political and economic events require formulating a new sociological imagination that is more creative, open, and accessible to the general public. In this paper, we use some of the most significant intersections of Mills’ work, between history and personal biography, to highlight the sociological imagination’s significant role in understanding the present. We use practical cases of applying the concept o…

Masculinities at work. Male-to-male internet escorting in Italy and Sweden
2023
Forward light-by-light scattering and electromagnetic correction to hadronic vacuum polarization
2023
Lattice QCD calculations of the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) have reached a precision where the electromagnetic (e.m.) correction can no longer be neglected. This correction is both computationally challenging and hard to validate, as it leads to ultraviolet (UV) divergences and to sizeable infrared (IR) effects associated with the massless photon. While we precisely determine the UV divergence using the operator-product expansion, we propose to introduce a separation scale $\Lambda\sim400\;$MeV into the internal photon propagator, whereby the calculation splits into a short-distance part, regulated in the UV by the lattice and in the IR by the scale $\Lambda$, and a UV-finite long-di…
Development of DNA aptamers for visualization of glial brain tumors and detection of circulating tumor cells
2023
Here, we present DNA aptamers capable of specific binding to glial tumor cells in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo for visualization diagnostics of central nervous system tumors. We selected the aptamers binding specifically to the postoperative human glial primary tumors and not to the healthy brain cells and meningioma, using a modified process of systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment to cells; sequenced and analyzed ssDNA pools using bioinformatic tools and identified the best aptamers by their binding abilities; determined three-dimensional structures of lead aptamers (Gli-55 and Gli-233) with small-angle X-ray scattering and molecular modeling; isolated and identified mo…
Mechanism of electrical switching of ultra-thin CoO/Pt bilayers
2023
We study current-induced switching of the N\'eel vector in CoO/Pt bilayers to understand the underlaying antiferromagnetic switching mechanism. Surprisingly, we find that for ultra-thin CoO/Pt bilayers electrical pulses along the same path can lead to an increase or decrease of the spin Hall magnetoresistance signal, depending on the current density of the pulse. By comparing the results of these electrical measurements to XMLD-PEEM imaging of the antiferromagnetic domain structure before and after the application of current pulses, we reveal the reorientation of the N\'eel vector in ultra-thin CoO(4 nm). This allows us to determine that even opposite resistance changes can result from a th…
Discretising Keyfitz' entropy for studies of actuarial senescence and comparative demography
2023
1. Keyfitz’ entropy is a widely used metric to quantify the shape of the survivorship curve of populations, from plants, to animals, and microbes. Keyfitz’ entropy values 1 correspond to species with a decreasing mortality rate with age (negative senescence), and a Keyfitz entropy of exactly 1 corresponds to a constant mortality rate with age. Keyfitz’ entropy was originally defined using a continuous-time model, and has since been discretised to facilitate its calculation from discrete-time demographic data. 2. Here, we show that the previously used discretisation of the continuous-time metric does not preserve the relationship with increasing, decreasing, or constant mortality rates. To r…
Idiopathic Non-Dental Facial Pain Syndromes in Italian Children: A Clinical Case Series
2023
Background. The orofacial pain syndromes (OFPs) are a heterogeneous group of syndromes characterized by painful attacks involving the orofacial structures. They may be summarily subdivided into two great categories: (1) orofacial pain mainly attributed to dental disorders such as dentoalveolar and myofascial orofacial pain or temporomandibular joint (TM) pain; (2) orofacial pain mainly attributed to non-dental pain as neuralgias, facial localization of primary headaches or idiopathic orofacial pain. The second group is uncommon, often described by single case reports, can often show overlapping symptoms with the first group, and represents a clinical challenge, carrying the risk of underval…
Pre-service teachers’ flexibility and performance in solving Fermi problems
2023
AbstractFermi problems are real-context estimation tasks that are suitable for introducing open-ended problems in primary school education. To ensure their effective introduction in the classroom, teachers must have adequate proficiency to deal with them. One of the key aspects of problem-solving proficiency is flexibility, but there are few studies on flexibility in solving real-context problems. This study, based on an analysis of the errors made by 224 prospective teachers when solving a Fermi problem sequence, establishes performance levels. In addition, we define levels of flexibility in using multiple solutions across the sequence, which allows us to address the main objective: to stu…

Interfacial Oxide Modulated unique Exchange Bias in CrPS4/Fe3GeTe2 van der Waals heterostructures
2023
Two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures are an attractive platform for studying exchange bias due to their defect free and atomically flat interfaces. Chromium thiophosphate (CrPS4), an antiferromagnet, has uncompensated magnetic spins in a single layer that make it an excellent candidate for studying exchange bias. In this study, we examined the exchange bias in CrPS4/Fe3GeTe2 van der Waals heterostructures using anomalous Hall measurements. Our results show that the exchange bias strength is robust for clean interfaces, with a hysteresis loop shift of about 55 mT at 5 K for few-layer Fe3GeTe2, which is larger than that obtained in most van der Waals AFM/FM heterostructures. However…
