Recovery of dissolved methane through a flat sheet module with PDMS, PP, and PVDF membranes

2022

Abstract A degassing contactor using a flat sheet membrane module (FM) was operated in sweep gas mode to study the performance of several commercial polymer membranes, both dense (polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS) and microporous (polypropylene, PP, and polyvinylidenefluoride, PVDF), for the recovery of dissolved methane from water. Non-steady state experiments were conducted at different liquid (QL, 3.5–40.5 L h-1) and gas flow rates (QN2, 0.05–15.00 L h-1). In the case of PDMS, PP, and when PVDF was operated at moderate high QL (≥ 21 L h-1), similar methane removal efficiencies (RE) were obtained. In the case of PVDF operated at relatively low QL (3.5 L h-1), a lower RE was observed. A model fo…

Selective Acrolein Hydrogenation over Ligand-Protected Gold Clusters : A Venus Flytrap Mechanism

2022

The catalytic partial hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes is an ideal reaction to understand the selectivity between two different functional groups Here the two functional groups are C═C and C═O, and the hydrogenation of C═O is preferentially desired due to the importance of the issuing products, unsaturated alcohols, in fine-chemical industries. Using density functional theory calculations, we investigate the catalytic competency toward this reaction of a Au nanocluster in the presence of protecting ligands that offer higher stability and the possibility for the uniform distribution of size-selected clusters in the catalytic system. meta-Mercaptobenzoic-acid-protected-protected Au …

Ferrocene-functionalized anilines as potent anticancer and antidiabetic agents: Synthesis, spectroscopic elucidation, and DFT calculations

2022

Abstract Ferrocene derivatives have attracted significant interest as potent biological agents and novel drug candidates. Hence, the present research work was focused on the synthesis and characterization of ferrocene-integrated anilines (FB1-FB4) through different spectroscopic techniques such as: FT-IR, multinuclear (1H and 13C) NMR, Raman, atomic absorption spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The crystallographic analysis revealed a supramolecular structure mediated by secondary non-covalent interactions (π—H and π—π). These ferrocenyl derivatives demonstrated a quasi-reversible electrochemical behavior with one electron transfer from Fe(II) to Fe(…

Pharmacological Neuroenhancement, Perceived Stress, and Resilience in Spine Surgeons–A Cross-Sectional Survey

2022

Background Spine surgeons are usually exposed to high workload and demanding work conditions. Although the relationship between pharmacological neuroenhancement (PNE) and resilience (i.e., the ability to recover from stress), as well as perceived stress and resilience-enhancing factors, has been investigated in the general population, less is known about the impact of those factors in spine surgeons. This study aimed to close that gap by investigating the relationship between PNE use and resilience, perceived stress, or resilience-enhancing factors in spine surgeons. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional survey in a sample of 582 spine surgeons in German-speaking countries (Austria, German…

Adapting to the pandemic: longitudinal effects of social restrictions on time perception and boredom during the Covid-19 pandemic in Germany

2022

AbstractWith the Covid-19 pandemic, many governments introduced nationwide lockdowns that disrupted people’s daily routines and promoted social isolation. We applied a longitudinal online survey to investigate the mid-term effects of the mandated restrictions on the perceived passage of time (PPT) and boredom during and after a strict lockdown in Germany. One week after the beginning of the lockdown in March 2020, respondents reported a slower PPT and increased boredom compared to the pre-pandemic level. However, in the course of the lockdown, PPT accelerated and boredom decreased again until August 2020. Then, in October 2020, when incidence rates sharply rose and new restrictions were int…

2022

Abstract Total nitrite (TNO2 = HNO2 + NO−2) accumulation due to the activity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) was monitored in microalgae-bacteria consortia, and the inhibitory effect of nitrite/free nitrous acid (NO2-N/FNA) on microalgae photosynthesis and inhibition mechanism was studied. A culture of Scenedesmus was used to run two sets of batch reactors at different pH and TNO2 concentrations to evaluate the toxic potential of NO2-N and FNA. Photo-respirometric tests showed that NO2-N accumulation has a negative impact on net oxygen production rate (OPRNET). 2022

Abstract A single, atypical conchorhynch (calcitic tip of a cephalopod lower jaw), recovered from the uppermost Meerssen Member (Maastricht Formation, upper Maastrichtian) at the former ENCI-HeidelbergCement Group quarry, south of Maastricht, is described as a new parataxon, Conchorhynchus illustris sp. nov. The specimen can be differentiated from all previous conchorhynch records on account of its large size, elongated shape and, in particular, of the structure of its apical part which is smooth and forwardly elongated. During the Late Cretaceous, conchorhynchs formed part of the jaw apparatus of nautilids and of two ammonoid suborders, Phylloceratina and Lytoceratina. Since conchorhynchs …

Stairway to organic heaven: The impact of social and temporal distance in print ads

2022

Abstract Multiple studies employ consumers’ intentions rather than actual purchases when assessing organic food consumption. These studies typically suggest a green bias in organic market share. Employing reactance and construal level theory, this research investigates the impact of one’s social distance to the character depicted in ads (animal vs. human) and the temporal distance (present vs. future) toward organic animal husbandry on consumers’ purchase responses directly; indirectly, as related to the portrayed character; and generally to organic foods. Three 2 (temporal distance: low, high) × 2 (social distance: low, high) between-subjects experiments demonstrate that low social distanc…

Corylus avellana: A Source of Diarylheptanoids With α-Glucosidase Inhibitory Activity Evaluated by in vitro and in silico Studies

2022

Corylus avellana hard shells, green leafy involucres, leaves, and male flowers have shown to be a source of diarylheptanoids, a class of natural products with promising biological activities. Cyclic diarylheptanoids, named giffonins, were isolated from the Italian cultivar “Tonda di Giffoni.” Even if many efforts have been made to establish the chemistry of these compounds, little is known about their biological properties. Herein, the inhibitory effects of diarylheptanoids isolated from C. avellana byproducts against α-glucosidase enzyme were evaluated. Molecular docking experiments disclosed the establishment of several key interactions between all the screened diarylheptanoids and the pr…

Design and simulation of QCA-based 3-bit binary to gray and vice versa code converter in reversible and non-reversible mode

2022

The current Very Large-Scale Integration (VLSI) technology has reached its peak due to the fundamental physical limits of Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS). Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA) is considered a proper alternative to CMOS technology in digital circuit design. QCA has features like low power, small area, and high speed in nanoscale digital circuit design. A code converter is a circuit that converts a determined code to another one. Code converters such as Binary to Gray, Gray to Binary, and Binary to BCD converters have a crucial role in fast signal processing in digital systems. Also, code converters are used as a base unit for data transmission into the Arithmeti…

Use of Sentinel-2 Satellite for Spatially Variable Rate Fertiliser Management in a Sicilian Vineyard

2022

Satellites can be used for producing maps of within-field crop and soil parameters and, consequentially, spatially variable rate crop input application maps. The plant vegetative vigour index (i.e., Normalised Difference Vegetation Index—NDVI) and the leaf water content index (i.e., Normalised Difference Water Index—NDWI) maps were used to study—through both time and space—the phenological phases of two plots, with Syrah and Nero d’Avola grapevine varieties, in a Sicilian vineyard farm, located in Naro (Agrigento, Sicily, Italy). The aim of this work is to produce spatially variable rate nitrogen fertiliser maps to be applied in the two vineyard plots under stu…

Gender Equality and Maternal Burnout: A 40-Country Study

2022

International audience; In Western countries, recent decades have witnessed a revolution toward gender equality. Inequalities have been greatly reduced in areas such as education or employment. Because inequalities lead to distress, this development has largely benefited women. One notable exception is the realm of parenting, which has remained rife with inequalities even in the most egalitarian countries. We hypothesized that experiencing inequality in parenting when one holds egalitarian values and raising a child in a country characterized by a high level of gender equality in other areas, increases mothers’ psychological distress in the specific area of parenting. ZnO – Yb2O3 composite optical ceramics: Synthesis, structure and spectral-luminescent properties

2022

International audience; Zinc oxide optical ceramics containing 0 – 2 wt% ytterbium are prepared byuniaxial hot pressing of commercial oxides at 1150 and 1180 °C. The ceramics have themain crystalline phase of hexagonal wurtzite-type ZnO. Ytterbium ions do not enter theZnO crystals but form a cubic sesquioxide phase of Yb2O3 located at the ZnO grainboundaries. Yb acts as an inhibitor for the ZnO grain growth. The ceramics exhibittransmittance up to 60% in the visible. Their transmission in the infrared is determinedby the free charge carrier absorption. The Yb3+ ions are found in C2 and C3i sites in Yb2O3crystals. Under X-ray excitation, the ceramics exhibit intense luminescence bands in the…

Regio- and stereoselective synthesis of spiro-heterocycles bearing the pyrazole scaffold via [3+2] cycloaddition reaction

2022

Abstract Herein we reported the utility of one-pot multicomponent based [3+2] cycloaddition reaction transformation to prepare a new two hybrids of spirooxindoles engrafted with pyrazole skeleton. Upon treatment of the electron-deficient olefins based pyrazole motif with in situ the generated azomethine ylides (AY) of sarcosine with the 6-chloro-isatin afforded spiroadducts. To enlighten the regio- and diastereo-selectivity of these spiroheterocycles, single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis was presented. Using Hirshfeld calculations, many short distance contacts such as O…H, Cl…H, N…H, H…C, C…C and Cl…S have a great impact on the molecular packing and the crystal stability of 8a and 8b. …

Control points deployment in an Intelligent Transportation System for monitoring inter-urban network roadway

2022

Abstract The constant evolution of transportation systems and traffic in developing countries is nowadays confronted with a problem of road safety and therefore of a high accident rate, especially in the context of inter-urban road transport. In this work, we propose a communication architecture for an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to provide surveillance in an inter-urban transport network in the context of developing countries. We introduce two types of control points: Relay Control Points (RCP) and Treatment Control Points (TrCP). We also designed two multi-objective models for the deployment of these points. In order to ensure good coverage, to minimize the cost of installation and…

Patterns of domain-specific learning among medical undergraduate students in relation to confidence in their physiology knowledge : insights from a p…

2022

Research FocusThe promotion of domain-specific knowledge is a central goal of higher education and, in the field of medicine, it is particularly essential to promote global health. Domain-specific knowledge on its own is not exhaustive; confidence regarding the factual truth of this knowledge content is also required. An increase in both knowledge and confidence is considered a necessary prerequisite for making professional decisions in the clinical context. Especially the knowledge of human physiology is fundamental and simultaneously critical to medical decision-making. However, numerous studies have shown difficulties in understanding and misconceptions in this area of knowledge. Therefo…

Bodily Practices in Action Formation and Ascription in Multilingual Interaction: Introduction to the Special Issue.

2022

This special issue brings together empirical studies that investigate how bodily practices feature in action formation and action ascription in multilingual interaction (Schegloff, 2007; Levinson, 2013). Grounded in video-based conversation analysis and drawing on data from diverse sociomaterial settings, the articles investigate the contingent interactional processes through which speakers from different language backgrounds accomplish actions and achieve intersubjectivity. They demonstrate how specific constellations of linguistic resources, bodily conduct, spatial configurations, and material ecology are built into accomplishment of actions at different levels of interactional organizati…

Female audit team leaders and audit effort

2022

Abstract Auditing is a collective process conducted by a professional accounting team with a wide range of skills and experience. Audit work is labor-intensive, and audit team diversity, particularly gender diversity, is considered to have both auditing and economic effects. However, there is scant empirical research on the way that audit engagements are conducted and the role of audit team leaders (ATLs), specifically female ATLs, in the audit effort, because they and other audit team members mainly develop audit strategies in practice during the planification period. A hand-collected private data set was gathered from Spanish small and medium-sized audit firms from 2001 to 2015. After con…

(Bounded) Traveling combustion fronts with degenerate kinetics

2022

Abstract We consider the propagation of a flame front in a solid periodic medium. It is governed by an equation of Hamilton–Jacobi type, whose front’s velocity depends on the temperature via a nonlinear degenerate kinetic rate. The temperature solves a free boundary problem subject to boundary conditions depending on the front’s velocity itself. We show the existence of nonplanar traveling wave solutions which are bounded and global. Previous results by the same authors (cf. Alibaud and Namah, 2017) were obtained for essentially positively lower bounded kinetics or eventually which have some very weak degeneracy. Here we consider very general degenerate kinetics, including for the first tim…

Matroid optimization problems with monotone monomials in the objective

2022

Abstract In this paper we investigate non-linear matroid optimization problems with polynomial objective functions where the monomials satisfy certain monotonicity properties. Indeed, we study problems where the set of non-linear monomials consists of all non-linear monomials that can be built from a given subset of the variables. Linearizing all non-linear monomials we study the respective polytope. We present a complete description of this polytope. Apart from linearization constraints one needs appropriately strengthened rank inequalities. The separation problem for these inequalities reduces to a submodular function minimization problem. These polyhedral results give rise to a new hiera…

Do the current guidelines for heart failure diagnosis and treatment fit with clinical complexity?

2022

Heart failure (HF) is a clinical syndrome defined by specific symptoms and signs due to structural and/or functional heart abnormalities, which lead to inadequate cardiac output and/or increased intraventricular filling pressure. Importantly, HF becomes progressively a multisystemic disease. However, in August 2021, the European Society of Cardiology published the new Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic HF, according to which the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) continues to represent the pivotal parameter for HF patients’ evaluation, risk stratification and therapeutic management despite its limitations are well known. Indeed, HF has a complex pathophys…

Management of Lemierre Syndrome.

2022

Lemierre Syndrome is a rare form of septic thrombophlebitis of the head and neck veins, most typically of the internal jugular vein, which affects otherwise healthy adolescents and young adults after an oropharyngitis or other local infection. It is characterized by multiple septic embolization. Despite treatment, Lemierre Syndrome displays a high rate of in-hospital complications that include thrombus progression and a new peripheral septic embolization; moreover, it can be fatal or cause disabling sequelae. The mainstay of the treatment is antibiotic therapy; anticoagulation is often used, but its role is controversial. Surgical treatment is often necessary in case of peripheral septic le…
