2022

Abstract Total nitrite (TNO2 = HNO2 + NO−2) accumulation due to the activity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) was monitored in microalgae-bacteria consortia, and the inhibitory effect of nitrite/free nitrous acid (NO2-N/FNA) on microalgae photosynthesis and inhibition mechanism was studied. A culture of Scenedesmus was used to run two sets of batch reactors at different pH and TNO2 concentrations to evaluate the toxic potential of NO2-N and FNA. Photo-respirometric tests showed that NO2-N accumulation has a negative impact on net oxygen production rate (OPRNET). Chlorophyll a fluorescence analysis was used to examine the biochemical effects of NO2-N stress and the mechanism of NO2-N inhi…

2022

Abstract Background Using indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging and tissue marking dyes (TMDs), perigastric lymphatic mapping and their pathological correlation were examined to see whether ICG staining covers all metastatic lymph nodes (LNs) in advanced gastric cancer (AGC). Methods Patients with AGC who underwent open distal or total gastrectomy were enrolled. ICG was serially injected intraoperatively into the subserosa along the greater and lesser curvatures. Stomach specimens were examined under a near-infrared camera. ICG-stained LNs were named, excised, and tattooed with different colored TMDs to retrace the exact location after pathological examinations. Results A total of 68…

Dinamiche della disuguaglianza e della robotizzazione: Un'analisi longitudinale

2022

Strategies for waste recycling : the mechanical performance of concrete based on limestone and plastic waste

2022

Recycling is among the best management strategies to avoid dispersion of several types of wastes in the environment. Research in recycling strategies is gaining increased importance in view of Circular Economy principles. The exploitation of waste, or byproducts, as alternative aggregate in concrete, results in a reduction in the exploitation of scarce natural resources. On the other hand, a productive use of waste leads to a reduction in the landfilling of waste material through the transformation of waste into a resource. In this frame of reference, the paper discusses how to use concrete as a container of waste focusing on the waste produced in limestone quarries and taking the challenge…

The equidistribution of some Mahonian statistics over permutations avoiding a pattern of length three

2022

Abstract We prove the equidistribution of several multistatistics over some classes of permutations avoiding a 3-length pattern. We deduce the equidistribution, on the one hand of inv and foz e ″ statistics, and on the other hand that of maj and makl statistics, over these classes of pattern avoiding permutations. Here inv and maj are the celebrated Mahonian statistics, foz e ″ is one of the statistics defined in terms of generalized patterns in the 2000 pioneering paper of Babson and Steingrimsson, and makl is one of the statistics defined by Clarke, Steingrimsson and Zeng in (1997) [5] . These results solve several conjectures posed by Amini in (2018) [1] .

Green, rapid and simultaneous determination of ‘alternative preservatives’ in cosmetic formulations by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

2022

Abstract Some hydroxylated compounds commonly used in cosmetic formulations including short chain glycols, benzylic alcohols, and organic acids show antimicrobial activity, although they are not considered as preservatives according to the existing European legislation. These ‘alternative preservatives’ are not exempt of potential side-effects for cosmetics users. The aim of this work is to develop a simple and affordable analytical method useful for the simultaneous and green determination of fourteen compounds used as ‘alternative preservatives’ in cosmetic samples with different matrices. The proposed method allows a rapid sample preparation by simple dissolution or dispersion of the sam…

5G V2V Communication With Antenna Selection Based on Context Awareness: Signaling and Performance Study

2022

Enhanced vehicle-to-everything (eV2X) communication is one of the key challenges to be addressed by the fifth generation (5G) of cellular mobile communications. In particular, eV2X includes some 5G vehicular applications targeting fully autonomous driving which require ultra-high reliability. Although vehicular communications are by default assumed between single antennas located on the roof of the transmitter and receiver vehicles, prior art has shown that there are other antenna positions more suitable for V2X communication, depending on the specific communication context. Antenna selection can be used in this case to select one specific antenna or a subset of them better suited for a cer…

Chemical-state analyses of Ni, Zn, and W ions in NiWO$_4$-ZnWO$_4$ solid solutions by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

2022

The chemical states of Ni, Zn, and W in microcrystalline NiWO$_4$-ZnWO$_4$ solid solutions were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The recorded spectra of the Ni 2p, Zn 2p, and W 4f photoelectron lines and Ni L$_2$M$_{23}$M$_{45}$, Zn L$_3$M$_{45}$M$_{45}$, and W N$_4$N$_{67}$N$_{7}$ Auger-transition lines show pronounced changes with increasing Zn concentration. The positions of the resolved photoelectron and Auger-transition lines were combined to construct so-called chemical-state plots (Wagner or Auger-parameter plots) for metal ions in solid solutions. With increasing Zn concentration, the Auger parameter increases for Ni and decreases for W, thus evidencing a lowering and an…

Neural correlates of morphological processing and its development from pre-school to the first grade in children with and without familial risk for d…

2022

Previous studies have shown that the development of morphological awareness and reading skills are interlinked. However, most have focused on phonological awareness as a risk factor for dyslexia, although there is considerable diversity in the underlying causes of this reading difficulty. Specifically, the relationship between phonology, derivational morphology, and dyslexia in the Finnish language remains unclear. In the present study, we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to measure the brain responses to correctly and incorrectly derived Finnish nouns in 34 first grade Finnish children (21 typically developing and 13 with familial risk for dyslexia). In addition, we compared longitudinall…

Role of calcium carbonate in the process of heavy metal biosorption from solutions: synergy of metal removal mechanisms.

2022

AbstractThe effect of calcium carbonate on the removal efficiency of cations of the selected heavy metals Cu, Zn and Pb from aqueous solutions using various biosorbents (BS) was investigated under laboratory static conditions. The main mechanism of biosorption of heavy metal cations is ion exchange, whereas the reaction with calcium carbonate results in precipitation of poorly soluble carbonates and hydroxides of the examined heavy metals. Studies conducted under static conditions have shown that the effect of Cu and Zn cations removal from solutions is better when using a mixture of BS and CaCO3 as compared to the effect of process, in which these two components were used separately. Analysis of the impact of sex and age on the variation in the prevalence of antinuclear autoantibodies in Polish population: a nationwide observation…

2022

AbstractThe detection of antinuclear autoantibody (ANA) is dependent on many factors and varies between the populations. The aim of the study was first to assess the prevalence of ANA in the Polish adult population depending on age, sex and the cutoff threshold used for the results obtained. Second, we estimated the occurrence of individual types of ANA-staining patterns. We tested 1731 patient samples using commercially available IIFA using two cutoff thresholds of 1:100 and 1:160. We found ANA in 260 participants (15.0%), but the percentage of positive results strongly depended on the cutoff level. For a cutoff threshold 1:100, the positive population was 19.5% and for the 1:160 cutoff th…

Pharmacological Neuroenhancement, Perceived Stress, and Resilience in Spine Surgeons–A Cross-Sectional Survey

2022

Background Spine surgeons are usually exposed to high workload and demanding work conditions. Although the relationship between pharmacological neuroenhancement (PNE) and resilience (i.e., the ability to recover from stress), as well as perceived stress and resilience-enhancing factors, has been investigated in the general population, less is known about the impact of those factors in spine surgeons. This study aimed to close that gap by investigating the relationship between PNE use and resilience, perceived stress, or resilience-enhancing factors in spine surgeons. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional survey in a sample of 582 spine surgeons in German-speaking countries (Austria, German…

Analytical Solutions of Viscoelastic Nonlocal Timoshenko Beams

2022

A consistent nonlocal viscoelastic beam model is proposed in this paper. Specifically, a Timoshenko bending problem, where size- and time-dependent effects cannot be neglected, is investigated. In order to inspect scale phenomena, a stress-driven nonlocal formulation is used, whereas to simulate time-dependent effects, fractional linear viscoelasticity is considered. These two approaches are adopted to develop a new Timoshenko bending model. Analytical solutions and application samples of the proposed formulation are presented. Moreover, in order to show influences of viscoelastic and size effects on mechanical response, parametric analyses are provided. The contributed results can be usefu…

Development of a novel in vitro system for biomedical applications

2022

Diaphragmatic surgery, a fundamental step of advanced stage ovarian cancer (ASOC) debulking surgery, is associated with a high post-operative complication incidence, which is supposedly reduced with thoracostomy tube placement. We assessed the role of intra-operative thoracostomy tube placement, as a prevention measure for post-operative complications, after diaphragmatic resection. Methods: This was a single center prospective randomized trial. Ovarian cancer patients, who underwent mono-lateral diaphragmatic resection, were randomized 1:1 into two arms. Arm A incl…

Gitelman-Like Syndrome Caused by Pathogenic Variants in mtDNA

2022

Contains fulltext : 248375.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) BACKGROUND: Gitelman syndrome is the most frequent hereditary salt-losing tubulopathy characterized by hypokalemic alkalosis and hypomagnesemia. Gitelman syndrome is caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in SLC12A3, encoding the Na(+)-Cl(-) cotransporter (NCC) expressed in the distal convoluted tubule. Pathogenic variants of CLCNKB, HNF1B, FXYD2, or KCNJ10 may result in the same renal phenotype of Gitelman syndrome, as they can lead to reduced NCC activity. For approximately 10 percent of patients with a Gitelman syndrome phenotype, the genotype is unknown. METHODS: We identified mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variants in th…
