Halogen-Bonded Mono-, Di-, and Tritopic N-Alkyl-3-iodopyridinium Salts

2023

Halogen bonding interactions of 15 crystalline 3-iodopyridinium systems were investigated. These systems were derived from four N-alkylated 3-iodopyridinium salts prepared in this study. The experimental results in the solid state show that halogen bonding acts as a secondary intermolecular force in these charged systems but sustains the high directionality of interaction in the presence of other intermolecular forces. Halogen bonds donated by polytopic 3-iodopyridinium cations are also sufficient to enclose guest molecules inside the formed supramolecular cavities. The experimental data were supplemented by computational gas-phase and solid-state studies for selected halogen-bonded systems…

Magnetic impurities on superconducting Pb surfaces

2023

It has been predicted theoretically and found experimentally that magnetic impurities induce localized bound states within the superconducting energy gap, called Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states. Combining symmetry analysis with experimental findings provides a convincing argument for the energy splitting and distribution of the YSR peaks, but the full details of the electronic structure remain elusive and simple models with point scatterers lack the full orbital complexity required to meet this challenge. In this work we combine a Greens function based first-principles method, which incorporates a phenomenological parameterization of the superconducting state, with orbitally complex impurity …

Trends in Net Survival from Vulvar Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Italy (1990–2015)

2023

(1) Objective: In many Western countries, survival from vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (VSCC) has been stagnating for decades or has increased insufficiently from a clinical perspective. In Italy, previous studies on cancer survival have not taken vulvar cancer into consideration or have pooled patients with vulvar and vaginal cancer. To bridge this knowledge gap, we report the trend in survival from vulvar cancer between 1990 and 2015. (2) Methods: Thirty-eight local cancer registries covering 49% of the national female population contributed the records of 6274 patients. Study endpoints included 1- and 2-year net survival (NS) calculated using the Pohar-Perme estimator and 5-year NS condi…

Design Archives: Sustainable Solutions for Young Designers in Valencia, Spain

2023

Design education is practical and theoretical; however, it does not usually include the study of cultural heritage. Nonetheless, relations with academia have been strong since the 18th century, when the need to educate designers spread across the continent to improve design and make it competitive in the market. In this paper, we recover that spirit and act as mediators between heritage and young people to create links and preserve cultural heritage. A case study was conducted at the Public Valencian Design School with 31 product design students. The methodology applied was based on iterative processes that allowed students to discover design and silk heritage when they proposed innovative …

Inclusive and diffractive dijet photoproduction at the Electron-Ion Collider in NLO QCD

2023

In the framework of collinear factorization and next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD, we make predictions for inclusive and diffractive dijet photoproduction in electron-proton and electron-nucleus scattering in the EIC kinematics. We establish kinematic ranges in the ${\bar p}_T$, ${\bar \eta}$, $x_A^{\rm obs}$ and $x_{\gamma}^{\rm obs}$ variables, quantify sensitivity to small-$x$ nuclear PDFs, and analyze various scenarios of factorization breaking in the case of diffractive scattering.

Improving computation efficiency using input and architecture features for a virtual screening application

2023

Virtual screening is an early stage of the drug discovery process that selects the most promising candidates. In the urgent computing scenario it is critical to find a solution in a short time frame. In this paper, we focus on a real-world virtual screening application to evaluate out-of-kernel optimizations, that consider input and architecture features to improve the computation efficiency on GPU. Experiment results on a modern supercomputer node show that we can almost double the performance. Moreover, we implemented the optimization using SYCL and it provides a consistent benefit with the CUDA optimization. A virtual screening campaign can use this gain in performance to increase the nu…

SARS-CoV-2 infection induces DNA damage, through CHK1 degradation and impaired 53BP1 recruitment, and cellular senescence

2023

AbstractSevere acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the RNA virus responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Although SARS-CoV-2 was reported to alter several cellular pathways, its impact on DNA integrity and the mechanisms involved remain unknown. Here we show that SARS-CoV-2 causes DNA damage and elicits an altered DNA damage response. Mechanistically, SARS-CoV-2 proteins ORF6 and NSP13 cause degradation of the DNA damage response kinase CHK1 through proteasome and autophagy, respectively. CHK1 loss leads to deoxynucleoside triphosphate (dNTP) shortage, causing impaired S-phase progression, DNA damage, pro-inflammatory pathways activation and ce…

Do intensified job demands predict burnout? How motivation to lead and leadership status may have a moderating effect

2023

ObjectivesThe aim of this longitudinal study was to investigate how intensified job demands (job-related planning demands, career-related planning demands, and learning demands) are associated with burnout. We explored whether affective-identity motivation to lead moderates this association and, thus, functions as a personal resource regardless of leadership status. We further investigated whether the possible buffering effect is stronger for those professionals who became leaders during the follow-up.MethodsOur sample consisted of highly educated Finnish professionals (n = 372): part of them (n = 63, 17%) occupied a leadership position during the 2-year follow-up while the rest maintained …

Psychometric Properties of and Measurement Invariance in the Questionnaire of Stereotypes Toward Older Adulthood in Health Care College Students and …

2023

Background In health professionals, negative stereotypes toward older adulthood have been associated with the difficulty in recognizing pathological processes and the refusal to care for older patients because of assuming that communication with them will be uncomfortable and frustrating. For these reasons, research on stereotypes in these groups has acquired growing importance. The usual strategy to identify and evaluate agist stereotypes is to use scales and questionnaires. Although multiple scales are currently used, in Latin America, the Questionnaire for the Evaluation of Negative Stereotypes Toward Older Adulthood (Cuestionario de Estereotipos Negativos sobre la Vejez [CENVE]), devel…

Climate Change and Anti-Meaning

2023

AbstractIn this paper, we propose meaningfulness as one important evaluative criterion in individual climate ethics and suggest that most of our greenhouse gas emitting actions, behaviours, and lives are the opposite of meaningful: anti-meaningful. We explain why such actions etc. score negatively on three important dimensions of the meaningfulness scale, which we call the agential, narrative, and generative dimensions. We suggest that thinking about individual climate ethics also in terms of (anti-) meaningfulness illuminates important aspects of our troubled ethical involvement with CC and can make a fresh and fruitful contribution to existing discussions, which tend to focus on moral res…

Heat transfer across a vacuum gap induced by piezoelectrically mediated acoustic phonon tunneling

2023

In contradictin to the common concept that acoustic phonons can only travel inside a material medium, they can in fact "tunnel" across a vacuum gap with the help of piezoelectricity, transmitting a significantly stronger heat flux than that of blackbody radiation. Here, we present a theoretical formulation for the heat flux of such piezoelectrically mediated heat transfer, applicable to any anisotropic piezoelectric crystals with an arbitrary orientation. A few numerical results are demonstrated and compared to heat transfer driven by other close-range mechanisms, including near-field radiative heat transfer and other acoustic phonon tunneling mechanisms. We find that piezoelectrically medi…

Reduced Peak Bone Mass in Young Adults with Low Motor Competence

2023

Although suboptimal bone health has been reported in children and adolescents with low motor competence (LMC), it is not known whether such deficits are present at the time of peak bone mass. We examined the impact of LMC on bone mineral density (BMD) in 1043 participants (484 females) from the Raine Cohort Study. Participants had motor competence assessed using the McCarron Assessment of Neuromuscular Development at 10, 14, and 17 years, and a whole body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan at 20 years. Bone loading from physical activity was estimated from the International Physical Activity Questionnaire at the age of 17. The association between LMC and BMD was determined using general …

An Overview of Geophysical Techniques and Their Potential Suitability for Archaeological Studies

2023

The need to study, protect, and conserve archaeological heritage has enhanced the application of geophysical techniques as non-invasive and reliable tools to investigate fragile and valuable assets. This review presents the most popular geophysical techniques suitable for archaeogeophysical investigations, namely, magnetometry, ground penetrating radar, and electrical resistivity tomography, together with a series of multiparametric measures taken from aerial platforms (UAS). For each method, we recall the basic physical principles, illustrate the operative procedures for field investigation, and provide indications about data processing and modeling. We propose a flowchart to address relia…

Probing the Gelation Synergies and Anti-Escherichia coli Activity of Fmoc-Phenylalanine/Graphene Oxide Hybrid Hydrogel

2023

The N-fluorenyl-9-methyloxycarbonyl (Fmoc)-protected amino acids have shown high antimicrobial application potential, among which the phenylalanine derivative (Fmoc-F) is the most well-known representative. However, the activity spectrum of Fmoc-F is restricted to Gram-positive bacteria only. The demand for efficient antimicrobial materials expanded research into graphene and its derivatives, although the reported results are somewhat controversial. Herein, we combined graphene oxide (GO) flakes with Fmoc-F amino acid to form Fmoc-F/GO hybrid hydrogel for the first time. We studied the synergistic effect of each component on gelation and assessed the material’s bactericidal activity on Gram…

Minimum contrast for the first-order intensity estimation of spatial and spatio-temporal point processes

2023

In this paper, we exploit a result in point process theory, knowing the expected value of the $K$-function weighted by the true first-order intensity function. This theoretical result can serve as an estimation method for obtaining the parameters estimates of a specific model, assumed for the data. The motivation is to generally avoid dealing with the complex likelihoods of some complex point processes models and their maximization. This can be more evident when considering the local second-order characteristics, since the proposed method can estimate the vector of the local parameters, one for each point of the analysed point pattern. We illustrate the method through simulation studies for…

The role of sexting in couple wellbeing for Italian women during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic

2023

The social isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on the sexuality and quality of life of people around the world. A particularly negative effect was detected on women’s sexual health. As a consequence, many women began to use social media not only to stay in touch with their social networks, but as a way of maintaining sexual contact. The main aim of this research is to observe the positive effects of sexting in women’s wellbeing as a strategy to manage the negative effects of a condition of forced isolation. We collected all our data between November 2020 and March 2021 during a period of strict restrictions in Italy due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. In Study …

Spatiotemporal dynamics of activation in motor and language areas suggest a compensatory role of the motor cortex in second language processing

2023

The involvement of the motor cortex in language understanding has been intensively discussed in the framework of embodied cognition. Although some studies have provided evidence for the involvement of the motor cortex in different receptive language tasks, the role that it plays in language perception and understanding is still unclear. In the present study, we explored the degree of involvement of language and motor areas in a visually presented sentence comprehension task, modulated by language proficiency (L1: native language, L2: second language) and linguistic abstractness (literal, metaphorical, and abstract). Magnetoencephalography data were recorded from 26 late Chinese learners of …

Multi-scale Imaging of Nuclear Deformation at the Electron Ion Collider

2023

We show within the Color Glass Condensate framework that exclusive vector meson production at high energy is sensitive to the geometric deformation of the target nucleus at multiple length scales. Studying $e+$U collisions and varying the deformation of the uranium target, we demonstrate that larger deformations result in enhanced incoherent vector meson production cross sections. Further, different multipole deformation parameters affect different regions of transverse momentum transfer. Employing JIMWLK evolution to study the Bjorken-$x$ dependence of our results, we find that the ratio of incoherent to coherent cross sections decreases with decreasing $x$, largely independently of the qu…

Deep learning for flow observables in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions

2023

We train a deep convolutional neural network to predict hydrodynamic results for flow coefficients, average transverse momenta and charged particle multiplicities in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions from the initial energy density profiles. We show that the neural network can be trained accurately enough so that it can reliably predict the hydrodynamic results for the flow coefficients and, remarkably, also their correlations like normalized symmetric cumulants, mixed harmonic cumulants and flow-transverse-momentum correlations. At the same time the required computational time decreases by several orders of magnitude. To demonstrate the advantage of the significantly reduced computati…

Follow-Up to Ensure Continuity of Care and Support Preventive Care

2023

Over the last decades, the prevalence of chronic health conditions and disabilities among children rose steadily, thanks to medical advances in both treating the primary condition and managing its complications. The improved long-term survival rates led to persistently high rates of pediatric chronic health conditions, which are often burdened with limitation in daily activity and dependence on medication, special diets, medical technology, assistive devices, and specialized staff. Therefore, children with complex chronic conditions are a frail population who generally need healthcare services beyond what is usual for healthy children. Indeed, their health issues often require specialized a…

A new control parameter to predict micro-warping-induced job failure in LPBF of TI6AL4V titanium alloy

2023

Abstract Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) includes a few printing techniques widely used, in recent years, concerning the additive manufacturing of Ti6Al4V alloys. These produced parts, typically utilized in sectors such as aerospace and biomedical, are characterized by very high added value. It is therefore fundamental to identify the influence of process parameters typical of LPBF technology on the occurrence of warping leading to process failure. This study deals with the characterization of single-track and “micro-scale” level warping phenomena which may lead to protrusion of material over the powder bed and process failure before normal termination. This phenomenon was investigated as a …

Chemometric Approaches to Analyse the Composition of a Ewe’s Colostrum

2023

Colostrum is a major source of immunity in lambs and, in general, in all newborn ruminants. It allows the transfer of antibodies from the ewe to the lamb, and it becomes the exclusive source of nutrients for a newborn. Among the most significant Pearson correlations, the positive correlation between the Brix refractive index (Brix) and protein (0.90) should be noted. Both parameters (protein percentage and Brix) were then positively correlated with the percentage of fat (0.38 and 0.41), urea (0.81 and 0.67), calcium (0.39 and 0.29), and magnesium (0.58 and 0.59), as well as the yellowness (0.78 and 0.75). Orbital Rashba effect as a platform for robust orbital photocurrents

2023

Orbital current has emerged over the past years as one of the key novel concepts in magnetotransport. Here, we demonstrate that laser pulses can be used to generate large and robust non-relativistic orbital currents in systems where the inversion symmetry is broken by the orbital Rashba effect. By referring to model and first principles tools, we demonstrate that orbital Rashba effect, accompanied by crystal field splitting, can mediate robust orbital photocurrents without a need for spin-orbit interaction even in metallic systems. We show that such non-relativistic orbital photocurrents are translated into derivative photocurrents of spin when relativistic effects are taken into account. W…

Embracing water, healing pine : touch-walking and transcorporeal worldings

2023

This article considers touch as an embodied worlding practice in the context of humans intentionally seeking tactile trans-species contact. In particular, it examines three co-researchers’ tactile relations with tree(s) and water which were explored by “touch-walking,” an immersive method developed for this study. The method opened possibilities for examining transcorporeal sensory matterings and affective flows between the researcher’s body, co-researchers’ bodies and more-than-human bodies. This experimental micro-research brings knowledge about how people form deeply meaningful relationships with natural bodies, making worlds by cherishing tactile contact with them. Theoretically, we “po…

Spatial correlations of field observables in two half-spaces separated by a movable perfect mirror

2023

We consider a system of two cavities separated by a reflecting boundary of finite mass that is free to move, and bounded to its equilibrium position by a harmonic potential. This yields an effective mirror-field interaction, as well as an effective interaction between the field modes mediated by the movable boundary. Two massless scalar fields are defined in each cavity. We consider the second-order interacting ground state of the system, that contains virtual excitations of both mirror's degrees of freedom and of the scalar fields. We investigate the correlation functions between field observables in the two cavities, and find that the squared scalar fields in the two cavities, in the inte…
