2018

ABSTRACT In this study, the association between parenting styles and short- and long-term socialization outcomes was analyzed using a two-dimensional model of four types of parenting styles. The socialization outcomes analyzed were self-esteem and internalization of social values. Participants were a sample of Spanish adolescents (n = 571) and older adults (n = 527). Results showed that both adolescents and older adults from indulgent families reported equal or even higher self-esteem than those from authoritative households, whereas those from neglectful and authoritarian homes were consistently associated with the lowest levels of self-esteem. Regarding internalization of social values, a…

2018

Disentangling directional and fluctuating asymmetry in a genome-wide association study.

2018

8 pages; International audience; Although directional and fluctuating asymmetry have been frequently assessed independently, they are indeed associated concepts both in theory and in practice. However, they can be difficult to disentangle in genome-wide association studies, where the appropriate shape statistics are not fully developed. Although the usage of Procrustes distances to overcome this problem may be tempting, this does not reliably help to identify the underlying genetic components of directional and fluctuating asymmetries. Here, similarities and differences among different approaches have revealed that the genetic component of the skull asymmetry in this population of mice is m…

Audience expectations and trust in online journalism

2018

Audience trust towards journalism gives meaning to the work of journalists. Yet this trust is in decline, which is threatening both media businesses and the society at large. This development is the worrisome but still natural result of trust’s intrinsic qualities. Trust is context-dependent: different situations evoke different expectations, the fulfilment of which defines what is “worthy of trust”. Changes to the journalistic environment shift audience expectations and thus disrupt the existing trust. The Internet and the introduction of online journalism are major drivers of such change. In light of these changes we can ask: what does the audience expect from online journalism? This arti…

Time and Performance Pressure

2018

Abstract. Time pressure and performance pressure are among the most crucial job demands of today’s workforce. However, the literature on psychological stress barely distinguishes between these constructs. Therefore, we aimed to examine time pressure and performance pressure as two qualitatively different job demands in terms of unique moderators for both demands. We investigated whether time control would moderate the relationship between time pressure and both emotional exhaustion and work engagement. As a vulnerability factor for dealing with performance pressure, we investigated perfectionism. The cross-sectional data of 167 employees showed that time control was a significant moderator…

Applications of Chemoinformatics in Predictive Toxicology for Regulatory Purposes, Especially in the Context of the EU REACH Legislation

2018

Chemoinformatics methodologies such as QSAR/QSPR have been used for decades in drug discovery projects, especially for the finding of new compounds with therapeutic properties and the optimization of ADME properties on chemical series. The application of computational techniques in predictive toxicology is much more recent, and they are experiencing an increasingly interest because of the new legal requirements imposed by national and international regulations. In the pharmaceutical field, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) support the use of predictive models for regulatory decision-making when assessing the genotoxic and carcinogenic potential of drug impurities. In Europe, the REA…

Stock Earnings and Bond Yields in the US 1871 - 2016: The Story of a Changing Relationship

2018

Using historical data that spans almost 150 years, we examine whether there is a long-run equilibrium relationship between the stock's earnings and bond yields. The novelty of our econometric methodology consists in using a vector error correction model where we allow multiple structural breaks in the equilibrium relationship. The results of our analysis suggest the existence of equilibrium relationship over 1871-1929 and 1958-2017. On the two historical segments, our analysis finds that the stock's earnings yield followed the bond yield in both the short- and long-run, but not the other way around. Perhaps the most important and surprising finding of our empirical study is that, after the …

Atomic layer deposition of Ti-Nb-O thin films onto electrospun fibers for fibrous and tubular catalyst support structures

2018

Here, the authors report on the preparation of core-shell carbon-ceramic fibrous as well as ceramic tubular catalyst supports utilizing electrospinning and atomic layer deposition (ALD). In this paper, ALD of Ti-Nb-O thin films using TiCl4, Nb(OEt)5, and H2O as precursors is demonstrated. According to the time-of-flight-elastic recoil detection analysis and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, carbon and hydrogen impurities were relatively low, but depend on the pulsing ratio of the precursors. Optimized ALD process was used for coating of sacrificial electrospun polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) template fibers to yield tubular Ti-Nb-O structures after thermal or solution based PVA removal. Anoth…

Exploring the effect of the cyclometallating ligand in 2-(pyridine-2-yl)benzo[d]thiazole-containing iridium(III) complexes for stable light-emitting …

2018

The preparation and characterization of a series of iridium(III) ionic transition-metal complexes for application in light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) are reported. The complexes are of the type [Ir(C^N)2(N^N)][PF6] in which C^N is one of the cyclometallating ligands 2-(3-(tert-butyl)phenyl)pyridine (tppy), 2-phenylbenzo[d]thiazole (pbtz), 1-phenyl-1H-pyrazole (ppz) and 1-phenylisoquninoline (piq), and N^N is 2-(pyridine-2-yl)benzo[d]thiazole (btzpy). The variation in the C^N ligands allows the HOMO energy level to be tuned, leading to HOMO–LUMO gaps in the range 2.76–3.01 eV and values of Eox1/2 of 0.81–1.11 V. In solution, the complexes are orange to deep-red emitters (λmax in t…

Techniques to Analyze sRNA Protein Cofactor Self-Assembly In Vitro

2018

Post-transcriptional control of gene expression by small regulatory noncoding RNA (sRNA) needs protein accomplices to occur. Past research mainly focused on the RNA chaperone Hfq as cofactor. Nevertheless, recent studies indicated that other proteins might be involved in sRNA-based regulations. As some of these proteins have been shown to self-assemble, we describe in this chapter protocols to analyze the nano-assemblies formed. Precisely, we focus our analysis on Escherichia coli Hfq as a model, but the protocols presented here can be applied to analyze any polymer of proteins. This chapter thus provides a guideline to develop commonly used approaches to detect prokaryotic protein self-ass…

The Effectiveness of Physical Exercise on Bone Density in Osteoporotic Patients

2018

Physical exercise is considered an effective means to stimulate bone osteogenesis in osteoporotic patients. The authors reviewed the current literature to define the most appropriate features of exercise for increasing bone density in osteoporotic patients. Two types emerged: (1) weight-bearing aerobic exercises, i.e., walking, stair climbing, jogging, and Tai Chi. Walking alone did not appear to improve bone mass; however it is able to limit its progressive loss. In fact, in order for the weight-bearing exercises to be effective, they must reach the mechanical intensity useful to determine an important ground reaction force. (2) Strength and resistance exercises: these are carried out with…
