Progress on nuclear reaction rates affecting the stellar production of 26Al
2023
Abstract The radioisotope 26Al is a key observable for nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy and the environment of the early Solar System. To properly interpret the large variety of astronomical and meteoritic data, it is crucial to understand both the nuclear reactions involved in the production of 26Al in the relevant stellar sites and the physics of such sites. These range from the winds of low- and intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch stars; to massive and very massive stars, both their Wolf–Rayet winds and their final core-collapse supernovae (CCSN); and the ejecta from novae, the explosions that occur on the surface of a white dwarf accreting material from a stellar companion. Several r…
Improved measurement of the branching fractions of the inclusive decays $D^+ \to K_S^0X $ and $D^0 \to K_S^0X $
2023
By analyzing 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data taken at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, the branching fractions of the inclusive decays $D^+\to K^0_S X$ and $D^0\to K^0_S X$ are measured to be $(32.78\pm 0.13\pm 0.27)\%$ and $(20.54\pm 0.12\pm 0.18)\%$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are consistent with the world averages of previous measurements, but with improved precision.
Effect of Foliar Treatments with Calcium and Nitrogen on Oregano Yield
2023
Oregano, Origanum vulgare L., is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Oregano shows variations in biomass yield and essential oil (EO) content due to the influence of abiotic and biotic factors. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of different foliar applications based on calcium (Ca) and nitrogen (N) on morphological and productive parameters in oregano. Tests were carried out in Sicily (Italy) in 2020–2021. In each year, eight foliar applications were applied. Only flowers and leaves were used for the extraction of the EO. For all parameters in the study, except for plant height and inflorescence length, the highest values were found in treated …

Breast Cancer in Two Ex‑Votos, A Millennia Apart: Patients’ Hope and Faith Expressed Through the Centuries in Votive Offerings
2023
A votive offering or ex-voto includes a variety of usually non-professional artworks offered to divinities and placed in religious sites to fulfill a vow or in gratitude for recovery from an illness or injury. Unfortunately, the ancient period lacks a scientifically verifiable understanding of the true nature of cancer and its natural history and, consequently, a lack of effective treatment. This paper discusses two ex-votos potentially related to breast cancer distant more than 2000 years, one from the other. The ex-votos convey the complex relationship of humans with illness through an art expression stemming from the heart and minds of ordinary people.
“Mamá, me quiero ir de este colegio”. Un análisis de las experiencias de acoso escolar de estudiantes con diversidad funcional
2023
Bullying is a high-prevalence problem in the classrooms of our schools. Young people with functional diversity constitute a particularly vulnerable population when they are involved in such situations. This study analyses the harassment experiences of five young people with functional diversity. To this end, five semi-structured interviews and a focus group were conducted. Participants reported having experienced verbal, physical, social and sexual harassment. The treatment of these situations by educational institutions was ineffective and the solution adopted in all cases was a change in the type of schooling. These results highlight the need to carry out teacher training and sensitizatio…
Energetic Valorisation of Saltworks Bitterns via Reverse Electrodialysis: A Laboratory Experimental Campaign
2023
Concentrated bitterns discharged from saltworks have extremely high salinity, often up to 300 g/L, thus their direct disposal not only has a harmful effect on the environment, but also generates a depletion of a potential resource of renewable energy. Here, reverse electrodialysis (RED), an emerging electrochemical membrane process, is proposed to capture and convert the salinity gradient power (SGP) intrinsically conveyed by these bitterns also aiming at the reduction of concentrated salty water disposal. A laboratory-scale RED unit has been adopted to study the SGP potential of such brines, testing ion exchange membranes from different suppliers and under different operating conditions. M…
Accelerometer-based physical activity in need satisfaction profiles of schoolchildren: A 3-year follow-up
2023
This study examined moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) trends in physical education (PE) classes and beyond school hours in children's need satisfaction profiles over 3 years. Participants were 445 (girls 256, boys 189) Finnish schoolchildren ( Mage = 11.26 ± 0.32 years). Need satisfaction self-reports and accelerometer-based MVPA data were collected in 17 comprehensive schools over four assessment phases. Four latent profiles based on the need satisfaction trends over time were found: Profiles with Large Decrease, Small Decrease, Small Increase, and Large Increase. The children with the most prominent need satisfaction decreases showed a significant decline in out-of-school MVP…
Postcranial disparity of galeaspids and the evolution of swimming speeds in stem-gnathostomes
2023
Abstract Galeaspids are extinct jawless relatives of living jawed vertebrates whose contribution to understanding the evolutionary assembly of the gnathostome bodyplan has been limited by absence of postcranial remains. Here, we describe Foxaspis novemura gen. et sp. nov., based on complete articulated remains from a newly discovered Konservat-Lagerstätte in the Early Devonian (Pragian, ∼410 Ma) of Guangxi, South China. F. novemura had a broad, circular dorso-ventrally compressed headshield, slender trunk and strongly asymmetrical hypochordal tail fin comprised of nine ray-like scale-covered digitations. This tail morphology contrasts with the symmetrical hypochordal tail fin of Tujiaaspis …
Spherically symmetric terrestrial planets with discontinuities are spectrally rigid
2023
We establish spectral rigidity for spherically symmetric manifolds with boundary and interior interfaces determined by discontinuities in the metric under certain conditions. Rather than a single metric, we allow two distinct metrics in between the interfaces enabling the consideration of two wave types, like P- and S-polarized waves in isotropic elastic solids. Terrestrial planets in our solar system are approximately spherically symmetric and support toroidal and spheroidal modes. Discontinuities typically correspond with phase transitions in their interiors. Our rigidity result applies to such planets as we ensure that our conditions are satisfied in generally accepted models in the pres…
Evaluation of simulated CO2 power plant plumes from six high-resolution atmospheric transport models
2023
Power plants and large industrial facilities contribute more than half of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Quantifying the emissions of these point sources is therefore one of the main goals of the planned constellation of anthropogenic CO2 monitoring satellites (CO2M) of the European Copernicus program. Atmospheric transport models may be used to study the capabilities of such satellites through observing system simulation experiments and to quantify emissions in an inverse modeling framework. How realistically the CO2 plumes of power plants can be simulated and how strongly the results may depend on model type and resolution, however, is not well known due to a lack of observations ava…

Risk perception and gratitude mediate the negative relationship between COVID-19 management satisfaction and public anxiety
2023
AbstractIn this study, we explored whether satisfaction with government management, perception of risk, and gratitude influenced public anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic in China. Using a cross-sectional, anonymous and confidential online survey, a nationwide sample of Chinese adults (N = 876) was targeted between March 25–March 30, 2020, a period in which newly confirmed cases significantly declined in China. The anxiety level was decreased as compared to that assessed during the peak period. Multiple parallel mediation modeling demonstrated that risk perception and gratitude partially mediated the relationship between satisfaction with government management and public anxiety. Increasi…
Rotating hematite cube chains
2023
Recently a two-dimensional chiral fluid was experimentally demonstrated. It was obtained from cubic-shaped hematite colloidal particles placed in a rotating magnetic field. Here we look at building blocks of that fluid, by analyzing short hematite chain behavior in a rotating magnetic field. We find equilibrium structures of chains in static magnetic fields and observe chain dynamics in rotating magnetic fields. We find and experimentally verify that there are three planar motion regimes and one where the cube chain goes out of the plane of the rotating magnetic field. In this regime we observe interesting dynamics -- the chain rotates slower than the rotating magnetic field. In order to ca…
Precision Measurement of the Decay $\Sigma^{+} \rightarrow p\gamma$ in the Process $J/\psi\rightarrow \Sigma^{+}\bar{\Sigma}^{-}$
2023
Using $(10\:087\pm44)\times10^{6}$ $J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the radiative hyperon decay $\Sigma\rightarrow p\gamma$ is studied at an electron-positron collider experiment for the first time. The absolute branching fraction is measured to be $\left(0.996 \pm 0.021_{\rm stat.}\pm 0.018_{\rm syst.}\right)\times 10^{-3}$, which is lower than its world average value by $4.2$ standard deviations. Its decay asymmetry parameter is determined to be $-0.652 \pm 0.056_{\rm stat.}\pm 0.020_{\rm syst.}$. The branching fraction and decay asymmetry parameter are the most precise to date, and the accuracies are improved by $78\%$ and $34\%$, respectively.
Rheological investigation on the ageing performance of bio-recycled asphalt binders and mixtures
2023
The current need to move towards more sustainable technologies in the construction sector has promoted the investigation of using alternative materials in asphalt mixtures for pavements. Biomaterials, used as biobinders, have shown their potential as partial replacement of bitumen in asphalt mixtures as solution to decreasing the demand for fossil-fuel-based binders as well as CO2 emissions. However, more research is needed to increase the replacement of bitumen in asphalt mixtures. In this investigation, biobinders are used as full replacement of virgin bitumen and as recycling agent within asphalt mixtures with high Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) content. Blends of biobinders and RA binders, and b…
Probing quantum gravity with elastic interactions of ultrahigh-energy neutrinos
2023
The next generation of radio telescopes will be sensitive to low-scale quantum gravity by measuring ultra-high-energy neutrinos. In this letter, we demonstrate for the first time that neutrino-nucleon soft interactions induced by TeV-scale gravity would significantly increase the number of events detected by the IceCube-Gen2 radio array in the EeV regime. However, we show that these experiments cannot measure the total cross section using only the angular and energy information of the neutrino flux, unless assumptions on the underlying inelasticity distribution of neutral interactions are made.
Dataset related to the article "Reduction of Cardiac Fibrosis by Interference With YAP-Dependent Transactivation"
2023
This record contains raw data related to the article "Reduction of Cardiac Fibrosis by Interference With YAP-Dependent Transactivation". Abstract Background: Conversion of cardiac stromal cells into myofibroblasts is typically associated with hypoxia conditions, metabolic insults, and/or inflammation, all of which are predisposing factors to cardiac fibrosis and heart failure. We hypothesized that this conversion could be also mediated by response of these cells to mechanical cues through activation of the Hippo transcriptional pathway. The objective of the present study was to assess the role of cellular/nuclear straining forces acting in myofibroblast differentiation of cardiac stromal ce…

Nanosponge-C3N4 composites as photocatalysts for selective partial alcohol oxidation in aqueous suspension
2023
A set of four composite materials was prepared, consisting of a nanosponge matrix based on beta-cyclodextrin in which carbon nitride was dispersed. The materials were characterized by the presence of diverse cross-linker units joining the cyclodextrin moieties, in order to vary the absorption/release abilities of the matrix. The composites were characterized and used as photocatalysts in aqueous medium under UV, visible and natural solar irradiation for the photodegradation of 4-nitrophenol, and for the selective partial oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and veratryl alcohol to the corresponding aldehydes. The nanosponge-C3N4 composites showed higher activity than the pristine semiconduc…
Coactivation of Autonomic and Central Nervous Systems During Processing of Socially Relevant Information in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Re…
2023
AbstractBody-brain interaction provides a novel approach to understand neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this systematic review, we analyse the empirical evidence regarding coexisting differences in autonomic (ANS) and central nervous system (CNS) responses to social stimuli between individuals with ASD and typically developing individuals. Moreover, we review evidence of deviations in body-brain interaction during processing of socially relevant information in ASD. We conducted systematic literature searches in PubMed, Medline, PsychInfo, PsychArticles, and Cinahl databases (until 12.1.2022). Studies were included if individuals with ASD were compared…

2023
Chronic venous disease (CVD) is an often underestimated inflammatory pathological condition that can have a serious impact on quality of life. Many therapies have been proposed to deal with CVD, but unfortunately the symptoms recur with increasing frequency and intensity as soon as treatments are stopped. Previous studies have shown that the common inflammatory transcription factor AP-1 (activator protein-1) and nuclear factor kappa-activated B-cell light chain enhancer (NF-kB) play key roles in the initiation and progression of this vascular dysfunction. The aim of this research was to develop a herbal product that acts simultaneously on different aspects of CVD-related inflammation. Based…
The Role of Spatial Exploration and Territoriality in Establishing Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata) Hierarchies, and Their Effects upon Underlying S…
2023
Territoriality, spatial exploration and social hierarchy are strictly related behaviors in gregarious fishes, and are often under-appreciated in farms where the individuals are confined within crowded spaces. In this study, we investigated the role of spatial exploration, elucidating the importance of time upon forming the social organization, and the role of the territoriality in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), using two experimental approaches. In the first approach, three fish were placed sequentially in the aquarium with an interval of two days (sequential model), while in the second (simultaneous model), two fish were simultaneously placed in an aquarium divided by a barrier which w…
Premorbid Personality Traits as Risk Factors for Behavioral Addictions: A Systematic Review of a Vulnerability Hypothesis
2023
The debate on personality structure and behavioral addictions is an outstanding issue. According to some authors, behavioral addictions could arise from a premorbid personality, while for others, it could result from a pathological use of technological tools. The current study aims to investigate whether, in the latest literature, personality traits have been identified as predictors of behavioral addictions. A literature search was conducted under the PRISMA methodology, considering the most relevant studies of the five-factor model from the past 10 years. Overall, most studies on addiction, personality traits, and personality genetics proved that behavioral addiction may be an epiphenomen…
Towards Human-Bot Collaborative Software Architecting with ChatGPT
2023
Architecting software-intensive systems can be a complex process. It deals with the daunting tasks of unifying stakeholders' perspectives, designers' intellect, tool-based automation, pattern-driven reuse, and so on, to sketch a blueprint that guides software implementation and evaluation. Despite its benefits, architecture-centric software engineering (ACSE) inherits a multitude of challenges. ACSE challenges could stem from a lack of standardized processes, socio-technical limitations, and scarcity of human expertise etc. that can impede the development of existing and emergent classes of software (e.g., IoTs, blockchain, quantum systems). Software Development Bots (DevBots) trained on la…
Axion electrodynamics: Green's functions, zero-point energy and optical activity
2023
Starting from the theory of Axion Electrodynamics, we work out the axionic modifications to the electromagnetic Casimir energy using the Green's function, both when the axion field is initially assumed purely time-dependent and when the axion field configuration is a static domain wall. For the first case it means that the oscillating axion background is taken to resemble an axion fluid at rest in a conventional Casimir setup with two infinite parallel conducting plates, while in the second case we evaluate the radiation pressure acting on an axion domain wall. We extend previous theories in order to include finite temperatures. Various applications are discussed. 1. We review the theory of…
Hybrid Propulsion Efficiency Increment through Exhaust Energy Recovery—Part 2: Numerical Simulation Results
2023
The efficiency of hybrid electric vehicles may be substantially increased if the energy of exhaust gases, which do not complete the expansion inside the cylinder of the internal combustion engine, is efficiently recovered using a properly designed turbo-generator and employed for vehicle propulsion. Previous studies, carried out by the same authors of this work, showed a potential hybrid vehicle fuel efficiency increment up to 15% employing a 20 kW turbine on a 100 HP-rated power thermal unit. The innovative thermal unit proposed here is composed of a supercharged engine endowed with a properly designed turbo-generator, which comprises two fundamental elements: an exhaust gas turbine expres…
Bacterial Diseases of Bioenergy Woody Plants in Ukraine
2023
In this study, the characterization of several bacterial diseases affecting silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.), common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.), white poplar (Populus alba L.), and white willow (Salix alba L.) in Ukraine were described. The typical symptoms, features of pathogenesis, and characteristics of the causative agents of the most common bacterial diseases of these tree species were shown. The following types of bacterioses were noted to be especially dangerous, namely, bacterial wetwood, fire blight, bacterial canker, and tuberculosis. Bacterial necrosis of the bark was a less dangerous disease. At the same time, all of the listed types of bacterioses were registered within the…
Shaping 1,2,4-Triazolium Fluorinated Ionic Liquid Crystals
2023
The synthesis and thermotropic behaviour of some di-alkyloxy-phenyl-1,2,4-triazolium trifluoromethane-sulfonate salts bearing a seven-carbon atom perfluoroalkyl chain on the cation is herein described. The fluorinated salts presenting a 1,2,4-triazole as a core and differing in the length of two alkyloxy chains on the phenyl ring demonstrated a typical liquid crystalline behaviour. The mesomorphic properties of this set of salts were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. The thermotropic properties are discussed on the grounds of the tuneable structures of the salts. The results showed the existence of a monotropic, columnar, liquid crystalline phase…
Commercial sharks under scrutiny: Baseline genetic distinctiveness supports structured populations of small-spotted catsharks in the Mediterranean Sea
2023
The present study, based on microsatellite markers, describes a population genetic analysis of the small-spotted catshark Scyliorhinus canicula (Linnaeus, 1758), representing one of the most abundant and commonly caught cartilaginous fishes in the Mediterranean Sea and adjacent areas. The analyses were performed to unravel the genetic features (variability, connectivity, sex-biased dispersal) of their relative geographic populations, both at the small (around the coast of Sardinia, Western Mediterranean Sea) and at a larger spatial scale (pan-Mediterranean level and between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea). Individual clustering, multivariate and variance analyses rejected the …
Relevance and Role of Contemporary Architecture Preservation—Assessing and Evaluating Architectural Heritage as a Contemporary Landscape: A Study Cas…
2023
Since WWII to the 2000s, numerous masters of contemporary architecture have contributed to the construction of new landscapes with their works; therefore, these places have become part of a changing landscape and of the multifaceted process of landscape generation. Nevertheless, during this fifty-year period, capitalism has led to the destruction of many existing landscapes, and the policies of protection and preservation have often entailed a process of musealization. In 2000, the European Landscape Convention adopted a new common-grounded definition of landscape, integrating a wide set of cultural approaches and disciplinary topics. Starting from the assumption that contemporary architect…
Superconductor-ferromagnet hybrids for non-reciprocal electronics and detectors
2023
We review the use of hybrid thin films of superconductors and ferromagnets for creating non-reciprocal electronic components and self-biased detectors of electromagnetic radiation. We start by introducing the theory behind these effects, as well as different possible materials that can be used in the fabrication of these components. We proceed by discussing in detail the fabrication and characterization of Al/EuS/Cu and EuS/Al/Co based detectors, along with their noise analysis. We also indicate some routes for multiplexing such self-biased detectors.
Digital Restitution of Cultural Goods: In Search of a Working Model
2023
AbstractThe paper deals with the problem of digital restitution of art to post-colonial and postdependency countries. A new model of digital restitution composed of two elements: creation of a digital copy with a NFT attached and creation of new property right in a physical and digital object has been proposed. A system of balances between the rights and duties based on the prior user concept has been developed.
Flow diversion for indirect carotid-cavernous fistula: Still an off-label indication?
2023
Background: Flow diversion (FD) is an established treatment for large or giant wide-necked unruptured intracranial aneurysms. In the past few years, the use of flow diverter devices was extended to several other “off-label” indications, including solitary or adjunctive treatment to coil embolization for direct (Barrow A type) carotid cavernous fistulas (CCFs). The use of liquid embolic agents still represents the first-line treatment for indirect CCFs. Typically, the ipsilateral inferior petrosal sinus or superior ophthalmic vein (SOV) is the preferred transvenous routes to access CCFs. In some cases, vessel tortuosity or different features make the endovascular access challenging, thus re…
