Overview on photoreforming of biomass aqueous solutions to generate H2 in the presence of g-C3N4 based materials

2023

Photoreforming (PR) of biomass can be considered a viable technology under mild experimental conditions to produce hydrogen with a high reaction rate using compounds from renewable resources and waste materials. The application of biomass PR gives rise to both hydrogen generation and biomass waste valorization. The process could be scaled up to obtain hydrogen under natural sunlight irradiation, and research on polymeric carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based photocatalysts has been widely carried out in recent years. The non-metallic-based carbon nitride materials are economical and (photo)stable polymer semiconductors, and their physicochemical surface and electronic properties are optimal for obt…

The role of overlayered nitride electro-materials for N2 reduction to ammonia

2023

Following our previous report on N2 reduction reaction (NRR) on the surface of nitrides, we investigated the influence of incorporation of titanium nitride as a stable and inactive-NRR material into the structure of DFT-predicted NRR-active surfaces of chromium, vanadium, niobium, and zirconium nitrides. The outcome of our density functional theory (DFT) based analyses suggests that combination of titanium nitride with vanadium nitride can enhance the potential-determining step of the reaction with up to 20% compared to pure vanadium nitride while maintaining similar number of proton-electron transfer steps for formation of two ammonia molecules. The influence of titanium nitride on chromiu…

Isoprene and monoterpene simulations using the chemistry-climate model EMAC (v2.55) with interactive vegetation from LPJ-GUESS (v4.0)

2023

Earth system models (ESMs) integrate previously separate models of the ocean, atmosphere and vegetation into one comprehensive modelling system enabling the investigation of interactions between different components of the Earth system. Global isoprene and monoterpene emissions from terrestrial vegetation, which represent the most important source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the Earth system, need to be included in global and regional chemical transport models given their major chemical impacts on the atmosphere. Due to the feedback of vegetation activity involving interactions with weather and climate, a coupled modelling system between vegetation and atmospheric chemistry is r…

Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods. Experimental research as a means for the innovation of already existing products: reporting of a type case.

2023

Innovation and the creation of new products in a company, or in a food industry, is an expensive process and requires profound transformations of the production processes. For this reason, the governance of some businesses often gives up on the idea of innovating, especially if some of their products, driving the market, can ensure short and medium-term earnings security. It is also quite well known, however, that the long-term solidity of a company is ensured only by innovation: mediating between these two possibilities is very difficult but one sustainable possibility, today, may consist in functionalizing already existing food products, adding, in the industrial manufacturing process, bi…

Hydrolate and EO Application to Reduce Decay of Carica papaya during Storage

2023

Postharvest fruit loss is caused by the absence of advanced handling and storage technologies and the quiescent presence of fungal pathogens. Therefore, there is a growing demand for sustainable decisions for the planet. This study focused on the use of two types of edible coatings: one was based on the essential oil of Origanum vulgare L. subsp. viridulum with Aloe arborescens Mill. gel (EC1), and the other was based on the hydrolate only (EC2). These treatments were applied to provide defense against fungal infections in papaya (Carica papaya L. cv Solo), and the storage time was 25 days (T5 ± 1 °C). Fruits coated with EC1 were more contaminated with fungal pathogens than both control (CT…

Machine learning for acute kidney injury: Changing the traditional disease prediction mode

2023

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious clinical comorbidity with clear short-term and long-term prognostic implications for inpatients. The diversity of risk factors for AKI has been recognized in previous studies, and a series of predictive models have been developed using traditional statistical methods in conjunction with its preventability, but they have failed to meet the expectations in limited clinical applications, the rapid spread of electronic health records and artificial intelligence machine learning technology has brought new hope for the construction of AKI prediction models. In this article, we systematically review the definition and classification of machine learning method…

Evaluation of Artifacts and Misinterpretation in 2D Electrical Resistivity Tomography Caused by Three-Dimensional Resistive Structures of Regular or …

2023

Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is a well-known geophysical method applied to geological, hydrogeological and geoenvironmental research. To date, 2D ERT is still used much more than 3D ERT, thanks to its greater immediacy, survey speed and lower complexity in processing and inversion. However, the assumption of two-dimensionality of the underground structures can mean that the effects of 3D structures on the 2D ERT can sometimes lead to gross errors in interpretation. This work aims to evaluate these effects by testing synthetic and experimental models. Numerical simulations are performed starting from different resistivity models, and from the results, 2D data sets are derived to s…

Letras trazadas en hueso. Alfabetos de la València islámica sobre escápulas de bóvidos

2023

A study is presented on the scapulae of bovids recovered in the urban excavations of the city of València, with chronologies ranging from the ninth century to the beginning of the thirteenth, all of them with Arabic alphabets incised or chiseled. For the first time they have been studied jointly and three new specimens are unveiled, two from Street Verge de la Misericòrdia, and one found in the recent excavations of the Islamic wall. To undertake the functional analysis of these bones, it is first to address the examination of the Arabic alphabet and its social uses. From an archaeological and epigraphic point of view, the results are presented and the hypotheses that have been formulated a…

Los notarios y su documentación. Diplomática notarial valenciana

2023

Improved chemometric approach for XRF data treatment: application to the reverse glass paintings from the Lipari collection

2023

The Aeolian cultural heritage preserves hundreds of testimonies of the past that have passed through six millennia of history. Among these, the Archeological Park of the Aeolian Islands with the Museum Luigi Bernab`o Brea (Italy) preserves a valuable set of artworks, which are related to a little-known ‘popular’ figurative heritage. It is an assemblage of small glass foils decorated using the technique of reverse painting, datable to between the end of the 17th century and the end of the 18th century, and actually under investigation by historians. Here, an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy study (performed with portable equipment) is combined with a multivariate approach that allows us…

The Euclidean Adler Function and its Interplay with $\Delta\alpha^{\mathrm{had}}_{\mathrm{QED}}$ and $\alpha_s$

2023

Three different approaches to precisely describe the Adler function in the Euclidean regime at around $2\, \mathrm{GeVs}$ are available: dispersion relations based on the hadronic production data in $e^+e^-$ annihilation, lattice simulations and perturbative QCD (pQCD). We make a comprehensive study of the perturbative approach, supplemented with the leading power corrections in the operator product expansion. All known contributions are included, with a careful assessment of uncertainties. The pQCD predictions are compared with the Adler functions extracted from $\Delta\alpha^{\mathrm{had}}_{\mathrm{QED}}(Q^2)$, using both the DHMZ compilation of $e^+e^-$ data and published lattice results…

The Quantification of Non-Action Costs as an Incentive to Address Water Pollution Problems

2023

Diffuse pollution is one type of pollution generated by agricultural, livestock, and urban runoff that is responsible for surface and groundwater pollution. As a result, the exposed population develops different diseases that affect their short, medium, and long-term quality of life. Researchers need to be able to assess the loss of quality of life in monetary terms to include this social impact in decision-making processes. Specifically, if no measure is implemented to correct the situation, these costs can be considered as the non-action costs of the social impact of water pollution. This study assesses the importance of measuring healthcare costs as a proxy for non-action costs for the e…

Analysing the sacred landscape in the Iberian Culture: GIS, caves and ritual performance

2023

Abstract: Sacred spaces, such as Iberian caves, with liminal location and character, had important ritual significance and socio-political meanings for their communities. Through the Geographical Information Systems -GIS- techniques, we can analyse these sacred spaces in context. In this paper, by using a regional study as an example, we show the main analysis undertaken with gis, such as visibility and mobility, considering diverse variables and formulas. This will allow to develop comparative perspectives with other similar Mediterranean contexts. A first approach to the sacred landscape of the Iberian Iron Age territory of Edeta, in Llíria, València, is presented, analysing two ritual ca…

Empowering Absence? Assessing the Impact of Transnational Male Out-Migration on Left behind Wives

2023

Experiences of left-behind family members of transnational migrant workers have been in the shadow of academic discourse on migration. To contribute to the slowly growing body of literature, this study explores the impact of male out-migration on left-behind wives. The study proposes and applies a novel framework to estimate Women Empowerment Index (WEI) for comparing the empowerment level across households with and without men in transnational labor. Cross-sectional surveys and unstructured interviews were used to collect data from 373 respondents from three selected areas in Nepal. Results indicate that left-behind wives experience a higher degree of decision-making authority, physical mo…

Effect of iron thicknesses on spin transport in a Fe/Au bilayer system

2023

This paper is concerned with a theoretical analysis of the behavior of optically excited spin currents in bilayer and multilayer systems of ferromagnetic and normal metals. As the propagation, control and manipulation of the spin currents created in ferromagnets by femtosecond optical pulses is of particular interest, we examine the influence of different thicknesses of the constituent layers for the case of electrons excited several electronvolts above the Fermi level. Using a Monte-Carlo simulation framework for such highly excited electrons, we first examine the spatio-temporal characteristics of the spin current density driven in a Fe layer, where the absorption profile of the light pul…

Effect of Hamstring Tightness and Fatigue on Dynamic Stability and Agility in Physically Active Young Men

2023

Hamstring extensibility has been defined as a factor to diminished dynamic stability and therefore increased risk of injury. The purpose of this study was to analyse the effects of hamstring tightness and fatigue on dynamic stability and agility. Nineteen participants were divided between the normal extensibility group (NEG) (n = 9, 82.2° ± 12.4°) and hamstrings tightness group (HTG) (n = 10, 64° ± 4.9°) using the passive straight leg raise test. To analyse dynamic stability and agility, they performed the modified Star Excursion Balance Test (mSEBT) and Dynamic Postural Stability Index (DPSI), and hexagon agility test, respectively, before and after a fatigue …

Study of Toner Penetration in Papers by Laser Induced Plasma Spectroscopy and Optical Profilometry

2023

Four major toners are used in the printing industry, cyan, magenta, yellow and black (Key) for making color images on paper. Paper brands suitable for printing have thin mineral/latex coatings, and toners are applied on top of the coating in the printing process. Chemical compositions from toner to toner, as well as from coating to coating, vary according to the needs of the end user. Interactions between the toner and the coating define the final color formation of the images in printing. Hence, it is important to study characteristics and dynamics of toners on coated papers. In this paper, we have used laser-induced plasma spectroscopy (LIBS) to provide information on elemental distributi…

Climate Change in the Mediterranean Basin (Part II): A Review of Challenges and Uncertainties in Climate Change Modeling and Impact Analyses

2023

AbstractThe Mediterranean basin is particularly prone to climate change and vulnerable to its impacts. One of the most relevant consequences of climate change, especially for the southern Mediterranean regions, is certainly water scarcity as result of a reduction of surface runoff and groundwater levels. Despite the progress achieved in recent years in the field of climate change and its impact on water resources, results and outcomes should be treated with due caution since any future climate projection and derived implications are inevitably affected by a certain degree of uncertainty arising from each different stage of the entire modeling chain. This work offers a comprehensive overview…

Mushroom-Based Supplements in Italy: Let’s Open Pandora’s Box

2023

Mushrooms and derivates are well known to the scientific community for having different health benefits and exhibit a wide range of pharmacological activities, including lipid-lowering, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, antimicrobic, antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, immunomodulating, neuroprotective and osteoprotective actions. In Europe, medical mushrooms are mainly marketed in the form of food supplements as single components or combined with other nutraceuticals. In this context, the first peculiarity that distinguishes it is the safety established through the “history of consumption” that characterizes that mushroom. However, the cultivation of medicinal mushrooms on a large s…

Antropocene o Capitalocene? Non è solo questione di geologia

2023

Modelling of thrombus formation using smoothed particle hydrodynamics method

2023

In this paper a novel model, based on the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method, is proposed to simulate thrombus formation. This describes the main phases of the coagulative cascade through the balance of four biochemical species and three type of platelets. SPH particles can switch from fluid to solid phase when specific biochemical and physical conditions are satisfied. The interaction between blood and the forming blood clot is easily handled by an innovative monolithic FSI approach. Fluid-solid coupling is modelled by introducing elastic binds between solid particles, without requiring detention and management of the interface between the two media. The proposed model is able to…

The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted global supply chains, leading to shipment delays and soaring shipping costs. We study the impact of global shipping costs-measured by the Baltic Dry Index (BDI)-on domestic prices for a large panel of countries during the period 1992-2021. We find that spikes in the BDI are followed by sizable and statistically signif-icant increases in import prices, PPI, headline, and core inflation, as well as inflation expec-tations. The impact is similar in magnitude but more persistent than for shocks to global oil and food prices. The effects are more muted in countries where imports make up a smaller share of domestic consumption, and those with inflation targetin…

Description of sound absorption by a flat resonator stacking metamaterial with double porosity model

2023

Acoustic metamaterials can be designed by inserting along the path of a sound wave periodically spaced side resonators. An example of efficient design was recently proposed consisting of a perforated stacking of flat annular cavities (the pancake resonator), the perforation allowing the propagation of sound waves. The pancake resonator is used in absorber mode and the theoretical description of sound absorption can be achieved with the help of the theory of sound propagation in fluid saturated porous media in which two porosities are considered: the main porosity associated with the perforation and a porosity associated with the flat cavity volumes. Considering a perforation diameter and fl…

Among the numerous epidemic episodes that have affected western Sicily in modern times, sadly famous are the plague of 1575 and 1624. The latter was the most serious occurred in Trapani and the one of which the most dramatic testimonies are preserved. Trapani quickly assumed the role of the starting point of the plague epidemic that raged in Sicily until 1626. The documents of the time testify to the coexistence of popular and religious beliefs of a superstitious nature with embryonic policies to contain the contagion on a scientific basis. The most famous doctor of the time in Trapani, Pietro Parisi, as it is known also linked to Malta, among other things recommended a coral-based therapy …
