Post-fire practices benefits on vegetation recovery and soil conservation in a Mediterranean area

2021

Financiado para publicación en acceso aberto: Universidade da Coruña/CISUG. [Abstract] Post-fire practices (PFP) aim to reduce soil erosion and favour vegetation recovery, but their effectiveness is spatially heterogeneous and under debate because of the economic and environmental costs. This study evaluates the different changes (Δ) of canopy cover (CC), sediment connectivity (SC) and local topography in four areas affected by the Pinet fire in eastern Spain (August 8th, 2018) and managed with: totally burnt with tree removal and long log erosion barriers (LEBs) (Pinet-1), partially burnt without PFP (Pinet-2), totally burnt with tree removal and short LEBs (Pinet-3), and totally burnt wit…

Magmatic signature in acid rain at Masaya volcano, Nicaragua: Inferences on element volatility during lava lake degassing

2021

Abstract Major, minor and trace element concentrations of single rainfall events were investigated at Masaya volcano (Nicaragua) in order to determine the relative contributions of volcanogenic elements. Most of the samples were collected in the summit area of the volcano around the Santiago crater, and two samples, representative of the local background, were collected at a 4.3 km upwind site. Samples from the summit are very acidic with pH down to 2.14 and contain large amounts of volcanogenic elements that can be clearly distinguished from the local background. These elements are released into the atmosphere from the continuously degassing lava lake of the Santiago crater, Masaya volcano…

Influence of bond deterioration on shear-flexure failure of prestressed girders with post-tensioned tendons

2021

Internal prestressing with bonded tendons suffers corrosion of wires and bond deterioration due to the bad infill of grouted sheaths. Many bridge girders show this state through cracking, deflections and in the worst cases, sudden failures. In Italy these are common situations, and the internal tendon corrosion is among the major causes of bridge degradation and damage, especially for grouted post-tensioned tendons. This paper presents the analysis of failure of prestressed cross-sections considering shear and flexure in the case of bond deterioration due to corrosion of internal post-tensioned tendons. The structural behaviour is analysed for different typologies of bridge deck composed of…

Ketone body 3-hydroxybutyrate as a biomarker of aggression

2021

Human aggression is a complex behaviour, the biological underpinnings of which remain poorly known. To gain insights into aggression biology, we studied relationships with aggression of 11 low-molecular-weight metabolites (amino acids, ketone bodies), processed using 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. We used a discovery sample of young adults and an independent adult replication sample. We studied 725 young adults from a population-based Finnish twin cohort born 1983–1987, with aggression levels rated in adolescence (ages 12, 14, 17) by multiple raters and blood plasma samples at age 22. Linear regression models specified metabolites as the response variable and aggression ratings…

A Process-Oriented View of Procedural Memory Can Help Better Understand Tourette’s Syndrome

2021

Tourette’s syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by repetitive movements and vocalizations, also known as tics. The phenomenology of tics and the underlying neurobiology of the disorder have suggested that the altered functioning of the procedural memory system might contribute to its etiology. However, contrary to the robust findings of impaired procedural memory in neurodevelopmental disorders of language, results from TS have been somewhat mixed. We review the previous studies in the field and note that they have reported normal, impaired, and even enhanced procedural performance. These mixed findings may be at least partially be explained by the diversity of the s…

Acceptance towards digital health interventions – Model validation and further development of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology

2021

Internet- and mobile-based interventions (IMI) offer an effective way to complement health care. Acceptance of IMI, a key facilitator of their implementation in routine care, is often low. Based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), this study validates and adapts the UTAUT to digital health care. Following a systematic literature search, 10 UTAUT-grounded original studies (N = 1588) assessing patients' and health professionals' acceptance of IMI for different somatic and mental health conditions were included. All included studies assessed Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy, Social Influence, Facilitating Conditions and acceptance as well as age, gender,…

Network design for surface water quality monitoring in a road construction project using Gamma Test theory

2021

Road construction has a negative environmental impact on the surrounding aquatic environment, requiring the continuous monitoring of surface water quality. Here, optimization of the water quality monitoring network (WQMN) is an essential step in supporting the sustainable development of road construction projects. This study introduces Gamma Test theory (GTT) as a practical method for optimizing the WQMN of surface waters during road construction. The water quality index (WQI) was computed in 48 monitoring stations for six monitoring periods from 2017 to 2019; data was acquired from a primary monitoring network over a new highway in southern Norway. Based on the results, it is possible to r…

L'identità delle popolazioni anelleniche d'Occidente nel Peri Italias di Antioco di Siracusa

2021

Dealing with the origins of the populations settled in southern Italy and eastern Sicily Antiochus focuses on the theme of the autochthony of the Oenotrians, as well as other ethne originated from those, such as Italoi, Sicels and Morgetes. This can be especially inferred by the narrative context of fragment 2 (Jacoby), reported by Dionysius of Halicarnassus. The sketchy reference to the Italic Archaeology made by Antiochus, who mentions the Oenotrians as the oldest people in Italy, contrasts with traditions absorbed into Pherecydes’ work, according to which the Oenotrians were an ethnos of a distant Arcadian kinship, descending from the eponymous Lycaon, son of Oenotrus. Antiochus’ portray…

The right to education during the Italian pandemic. E-learning and inequality before the law

2021

Since the beginning of 2020 Italy have tried to give specific and rapid answers to the pandemic crisis, even if with strong compressions and limitations of constitutional fundamental rights, which has led to a huge debate among scholars about: the legislative instruments applied, the kind of legislation used, and on the merit of the measures enacted, having regard to their content and their compatibility with the constitutional principles and provisions, their legitimacy, their proportionality and the (un)fair balancing with the fundamental rights compressed and limited under their effects. Mostly, the crucial balancing work has involved, on one side, the right to health in its individual (…

La necesidad de la teoría

2021

The need for theory is particularly necessary in our time, uncertain due to the crisis of foundations and knowledge for which architecture itself has become complex, full of contradictions, marked by infinite paths and sometimes unstable. The project cannot be entrusted to the contingencies of each case; creativity itself, daughter of intuition and chance, needs to be "worked" within the law, which is born from the mind and is built with logic so that the forms are appropriate and that everything is in the right place and to the extent. Especially in the Project Courses/Workshops of the first years, which constitute an "initiation" to the project, facing the theoretical moment is necessary …

Ecological dependencies make remote reef fish communities most vulnerable to coral loss

2021

Ecosystems face both local hazards, such as over-exploitation, and global hazards, such as climate change. Since the impact of local hazards attenuates with distance from humans, local extinction risk should decrease with remoteness, making faraway areas safe havens for biodiversity. However, isolation and reduced anthropogenic disturbance may increase ecological specialization in remote communities, and hence their vulnerability to secondary effects of diversity loss propagating through networks of interacting species. We show this to be true for reef fish communities across the globe. An increase in fish-coral dependency with the distance of coral reefs from human settlements, paired with…

On Defining the Participatory Museum: The Case of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdansk

2021

This article seeks to contribute to the current debate on the new definition of the “museum” – a debate which led to turmoil at the 2019 ICOM General Assembly in Kyoto. With reference to the case study of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdansk (MSWW), it analyses the new and very successful genre of the narrative museum, a genre which arguably fulfils the core elements of the definition currently being discussed by ICOM. In this regard, it brings into focus the paramount importance of community involvement in creating and managing narrative museums – an aspect that has been virtually absent in the academic and media debates over the nature of the MSWW and its programme. By pointing ou…

Personal Social Networks of Community-Dwelling Oldest Old During the Covid-19 Pandemic—A Qualitative Study

2021

The COVID-19 pandemic and its related restrictions have affected the everyday life of older people. Advanced age is a significant predisposing factor for a more severe COVID-19 infection, increasing the risk for hospitalization and mortality. Even though restrictions have been, thus, well-grounded, they may also have had detrimental effects on the social well-being of older people. Personal networks and social activity are known protective factors against the premature decline in health and functioning, and it is widely acknowledged that social isolation increases feelings of loneliness, poor quality of life, and even the risk for diseases and disabilities among older adults. Cocleo-labirintopatie nel bambino. Come non perdere l'equilibrio.

2021

Cochleo-labyrinthopathy (CL) is an affection that involves cochlea and vestibular system. It occurs with the association of auditory symptoms (sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus), vestibular symptoms (objective vertigo, unidirectional horizontal-rotary nystagmus and static or dynamic balance disorders) and neurovegetative signs (nausea, vomiting, pallor, sweating, etc.). The diagnosis may be difficult in paediatric age since the child is unable to clearly express their discomfort and symptoms. Multiple causes have been recognized but, in acute cases, infection is the most frequent etiological agent. The paper describes a case of CL due to Herpes Virus 1-2 infection responsive to acyclo…

Immune biomarkers to predict SARS-CoV-2 vaccine effectiveness in patients with hematological malignancies

2021

AbstractThere is evidence of reduced SARS-CoV-2 vaccine effectiveness in patients with hematological malignancies. We hypothesized that tumor and treatment-related immunosuppression can be depicted in peripheral blood, and that immune profiling prior to vaccination can help predict immunogenicity. We performed a comprehensive immunological characterization of 83 hematological patients before vaccination and measured IgM, IgG, and IgA antibody response to four viral antigens at day +7 after second-dose COVID-19 vaccination using multidimensional and computational flow cytometry. Health care practitioners of similar age were the control group (n = 102). Forty-four out of 59 immune cell types …
