MIS 5.5 highstand and future sea level flooding at 2100 and 2300 in tectonically stable areas of central mediterranean sea: Sardinia and the pontina …

2021

Areas of the Mediterranean Sea are dynamic habitats in which human activities have been conducted for centuries and which feature micro-tidal environments with about 0.40 m of range. For this reason, human settlements are still concentrated along a narrow coastline strip, where any change in the sea level and coastal dynamics may impact anthropic activities. We analyzed light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and Copernicus Earth observation data. The aim of this research is to provide estimates and detailed maps (in three coastal plain of Sardinia (Italy) and in the Pontina Plain (southern Latium, Italy) of: (i) the past marine transgression occurred during MIS 5.5 highstand 119 kyrss BP

Automated Creation of Expert Systems with the InteKRator Toolbox

2021

Expert systems have a long tradition in both medical informatics and artificial intelligence research. Traditionally, such systems are created by implementing knowledge provided by experts in a system that can be queried for answers. To automatically generate such knowledge directly from data, the lightweight InteKRator toolbox will be introduced here, which combines knowledge representation and machine learning approaches. The learned knowledge is represented in the form of rules with exceptions that can be inspected and that are easily comprehensible. An inference module allows for the efficient answering of queries, while at the same time offering the possibility of providing explanation…

The Palaeontological heritage of Ribeira de Cacela (Algarve, Portugal). Its preservation in the Portuguese context

2021

The protection of palaeontological heritage is justified by its own specificity, which results from its limited visibility, spatial variability, irreproducibility and importance as a record of past biodiversity. Until the present in Portugal the laws concerning the preservation of natural areas are focused mainly on the protection of threatened living species and their habitats, neglecting any geological aspect, and even less the concept of palaeontological heritage. The present analysis refers to the fossil-site of Ribeira de Cacela, included in the Natural Park of Ria Formosa (Algarve, southern Portugal), which represents a site of great paleontological interest. Paleobiology and paleobiogeography of sclerorhynchid sawfishes (Chondrichthyes, Batomorphii)

2021

Sclerorhynchid sawfishes are a monophyletic group of Cretaceous selachians. They resemble modern sawfishes in the outer morphology and by having a hypertrophic rostral cartilage armed with lateral rows of spines. Generally, sclerorhynchid sawfishes were inhabitants of warm, shallow tropical and subtropical marine environments. Teeth of the oldest sclerorhynchid sawfishes from Spain are presented. They belong to Onchopristis Stromer and come from the lower Barrernian of eastern Spain. The paleobiology and paleogeographic pattern of sclerorhynchid sawfishes is reviewed and discussed.

Taxonomic flux as a measure of evolutionary turnover

2021

We introduce a new metric, "taxonomic flux", to quantify evolutionary trends both within and across taxonomic boundaries. This metric is normalized, which reduces the effect of sample size disparity between biologic groups and time intervals. Furthermore, this methodology considers stratigraphic range data as a whole, and measures relative growth or decline of diversity values as they deviate from system stability. Such trends may yield key information relating to evolutionary processes and forcing functions, especially if these trends are correlative within particular taxa or niche occupancy. Thus far, scientists and researchers have been stymied by absolute values derived from unequal dat…

Room-Temperature Magnetic Bistability in a Salt of Organic Radical Ions

2021

International audience; Cocrystallization of 7,7′,8,8′-tetracyanoquinodimethane radical anion (TCNQ −•) and 3-methylpyridinium-1,2,3,5dithiadiazolyl radical cation (3-MepyDTDA +•) afforded isostructural acetonitrile (MeCN) or propionitrile (EtCN) solvates containing cofacial π dimers of homologous components. Loss of lattice solvent from the diamagnetic solvates above 366 K affords a high-temperature paramagnetic phase containing discrete TCNQ −• and weakly bound π dimers of 3-MepyDTDA +• , as evidenced by X-ray diffraction methods and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Below 268 K, a first-order phase transition occurs, leading to a low-temperature diamagnetic phase with TCNQ −• σ dimer…

Modeling of Resonance Phenomena in Self-Oscillating System of Agricultural Machines

2021

Factors affecting the interaction of the active cultivator paw with the soil environment are considered in this article. It was established that the active oscillating effect of tillage machines on the environment leads to reduction in its traction characteristics, and the design of symmetrical movable paw is capable of self-oscillation in a horizontal plane. It was developed the theoretical model of oscillatory movements that takes into account the main structural parameters of working bodies represented by symmetrical cultivator paws of the active type. For laboratory studies, a circular soil channel is used, which ensures the movement of the soil relative to the stationary working body f…

Influence of Foot Type on the Clinical Outcome of Minimally Invasive Surgery for Metatarsalgia. A Prospective Pilot Study

2021

Background and aims: Surgical procedures for central metatarsalgia seek to harmonise the metatarsal parabola with osteotomies that can be performed by minimally invasive techniques. However, the possible relationship of the foot type and the mid-term postoperative outcome is poorly described. The objective of this prospective pilot study was therefore to determine whether the foot type (pronate, neutral, or supinate) conditions the postoperative mid-term functional outcome. Methods: A series of 28 patients (6 men, 22 women) were treated for primary central metatarsalgia by means of minimally invasive distal metaphyseal osteotomy (DMMO).Results: Their functional outcomes at 6 and 12 months we…

The Foreign Body Response to an Implantable Therapeutic Reservoir in a Diabetic Rodent Model

2021

Advancements in type 1 diabetes mellitus treatments have vastly improved in recent years. The move toward a bioartificial pancreas and other fully implantable systems could help restore patient's glycemic control. However, the long-term success of implantable medical devices is often hindered by the foreign body response. Fibrous encapsulation "walls off" the implant to the surrounding tissue, impairing its functionality. In this study we aim to examine how streptozotocin-induced diabetes affects fibrous capsule formation and composition surrounding implantable drug delivery devices following subcutaneous implantation in a rodent model. After 2 weeks of implantation, the fibrous capsule sur…

Segmentation of Positron Emission Tomography Images Using Multi-atlas Anatomical Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

2021

Positron emission tomography (PET), is a medical imaging technique, it provides information about the body’s cellular function rather than its anatomy. However, due to the functional nature of PET images, locating the anatomical structures in such an image remains a challenging task, indeed, PET images only provide very little anatomical information. Segmentation of PET images, therefore, requires the intervention of a medical expert. The expert proceeds to a manual segmentation of a volume slice by slice, which turns out to be very tedious and costly in terms of time. In this article, we present, evaluate, and make available a multi-atlas approach for automatically segmenting human brain P…

Detecting human impacts: non-pollen palynomorphs as proxies for human impact on the environment

2021

International audience; Abstract Non-pollen palynomorphs (NPPs) are widely used to detect human activities, in addition to the anthropogenic indicators used in palynology. This paper first tries to determine the best way to approach most probable number (MPN) counting for young scientists. It then looks at the anthropogenic indicators and the different types of human activity that can reveal the studied taxa. Among the different fungal spores, coprophilous fungi are very useful to evidence pastoral activities and grazing pressure. Numerous taxa related to dung are also indicators of decaying organic matter and deserve our attention. Erosion processes due to human activities increase the rep…

W cieniu trudnej przeszłości — kolejna odsłona kryzysu katalońskiego

2021

The purpose of this article is to present the repression that hit Catalonia during the Spanish Civil War (abolition of autonomy and return to centralism, criminal sentences of a political nature), thus showing that prudent political choices, dialogue, and mediation in Catalonia are a matter of utmost importance. Historical experiences should not become an element of political games but motivate a debate between the central government and the autonomous region on reforming the state system and improving cooperation mechanisms. For Catalonia, the dictatorship meant cancelling all republican legislation and judicial decisions and the annulment as well as annulling the Catalan autonomy statute …

Latvijas Universitātes vēsturiskais karogs

2021

The article is focused on a fundamental issue of the History of the University of Latvia - the origins and symbolic importance of the flag of the University of Latvia. A critical analysis is made about the complex history of the origins of the UL flag and its conflicting assessments among the academic lifetime organizations of UL students about its use on the November 18 march to the Riga Cemetery of Brethren, which erupted immediately after the creation of the UL flag in 1938. A comparison is also made between the original from 1938 and the copy of the historical UL flag from 1991, distinguishing the common and the different.
