'School adopts an experiment': the photoluminescence in extra-virgin olive oil and in tonic water

We report a laboratory activity, carried out along with high- and secondary-school students, that can be done to increase the interest of the young in scientific studies. Groups of selected students ‘adopted’ experiments at physics research laboratories, under the guidance of university researchers. Subsequently, the students demonstrated the experiments to the public at large during the annual science festival organized in Palermo by the association PalermoScienza, in collaboration with the University of Palermo. An inquiry-based approach to Maxwell distribution: a case study with engineering students

The concept of distribution is a fundamental component of statistical thinking. This paper describes a teaching approach for it that uses a specific activity related to the field of statistical mechanics. The concept of the velocity distribution of a particle system is dealt with using an inquiry-based approach involving an experimental examination of Maxwell’s distribution. Some outcomes of a teaching experiment held at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Palermo, Italy are described.

Recent studies have highlighted an alarming decline in young people’s interest towards the study of scientific subjects, often considered interesting but not easily understood and appreciated by students. A pedagogical approach to the Magnus expansion

Time-dependent perturbation theory as a tool to compute approximate solutions of the Schrodinger equation does not preserve unitarity. Here we present, in a simple way, how the Magnus expansion (also known as exponential perturbation theory) provides such unitary approximate solutions. The purpose is to illustrate the importance and consequences of such a property. We suggest that the Magnus expansion may be introduced to students in advanced courses of quantum mechanics.

En este estudio exploratorio se evalúa el conocimiento didáctico del contenido (CDC) sobre pilas galvánicas de profesores de secundaria en formación y en ejercicio. Además, este conocimiento se ha relacionado con los enfoques de enseñanza que prefieren. Para este propósito, se ha adaptado el instrumento CoRe de Loughran, Mulhall y Berry (2004) considerando dos situaciones: pila Daniell y pila voltaica simple. Influence of Content Knowledge on Pedagogical Content Knowledge: The case of teaching photosynthesis and plant growth

International audience; Abstract The aim of the research was to investigate the effect of the amount and quality of content knowledge on pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). The biological content photosynthesis and plant growth was used as an example. The research sample consisted of 10 primary and 10 secondary (biology) teacher students. Questionnaires, lesson preparation task and an interview were used to collect data. Primary student teachers' were not aware of students' conceptual difficulties and had problems in choosing the most important content. This article discusses how students can be more integrated in developing library instruction and what advantages that can provide for librarians planning their teaching. The article discusses didactic approaches to teaching grammar that have been developed in Polish language didactics since the end of the 18thcentury: grammatical-normative, system--grammatical and functional. Subsequent approaches are presented in the historical order, but the considerations focus on their main theoretical assumptions, areas of criticism of previous approaches and methodological solutions developed on these foundations. The approach adopted has been defined as the overriding principle of understanding the learning process.
