Probing the spin dimensionality in single-layer CrSBr van der Waals heterostructures by magneto-transport measurements
2022
Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials offer unprecedented opportunities for fundamental physics and applied research in spintronics and magnonics. Beyond the pioneering studies on 2D CrI3 and Cr2Ge2Te6, this emerging field has expanded to 2D antiferromagnets exhibiting different spin anisotropies and textures. Of particular interest is the layered metamagnet CrSBr, a relatively air-stable semiconductor formed by antiferromagnetically-coupled ferromagnetic layers (Tc~150 K) that can be exfoliated down to the single-layer. It presents a complex magnetic behavior with a dynamic magnetic crossover leading to a low-temperature hidden order below T*~40 K. Here, we inspect the magneto-transport …
Pseudogap in high-temperature superconductors from realistic Fr\"ohlich and Coulomb interactions
2012
It has been recently shown that the competition between unscreened Coulomb and Fr\"{o}hlich electron-phonon interactions can be described in terms of a short-range spin exchange $J_p$ and an effective on-site interaction $\tilde{U}$ in the framework of the polaronic $t$-$J_p$-$\tilde{U}$ model. This model, that provides an explanation for high temperature superconductivity in terms of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of small and light bipolarons, is now studied as a charged Bose-Fermi mixture. Within this approximation, we show that a gap between bipolaron and unpaired polaron bands results in a strong suppression of low-temperature spin susceptibility, specific heat and tunneling conducta…
High temperature superconductivity from realistic long-range Coulomb and Fr\"ohlich interactions
2012
In the last years ample experimental evidence has shown that charge carriers in high-temperature superconductors are strongly correlated but also coupled with lattice vibrations (phonons), signaling that the true origin of high-Tc superconductivity can only be found in a proper combination of Coulomb and electron-phonon interactions. On this basis, we propose and study a model for high-Tc superconductivity, which accounts for realistic Coulomb repulsion, strong electron-phonon (Fr\"ohlich) interaction and residual on-site (Hubbard \tilde{U}) correlations without any ad-hoc assumptions on their relative strength and interaction range. In the framework of this model, which exhibits a phase tr…
Melting the Superconducting State in the Electron Doped Cuprate Pr$_{1.85}% $Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-\delta}$ with Intense near-infrared and Terahertz Pul…
2016
We studied the superconducting (SC) state depletion process in an electron doped cuprate Pr$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-\delta}$ by pumping with near-infrared (NIR) and narrow-band THz pulses. When pumping with THz pulses tuned just above the SC gap, we find the absorbed energy density required to deplete superconductivity, $A_{dep}$, matches the thermodynamic condensation energy. Contrary, by NIR pumping $A_{dep}$ is an order of magnitude higher, despite the fact that the SC gap is much smaller than the energy of relevant bosonic excitations. The result implies that only a small subset of bosons contribute to pairing.
Parallelization strategies for density matrix renormalization group algorithms on shared-memory systems
2003
Shared-memory parallelization (SMP) strategies for density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithms enable the treatment of complex systems in solid state physics. We present two different approaches by which parallelization of the standard DMRG algorithm can be accomplished in an efficient way. The methods are illustrated with DMRG calculations of the two-dimensional Hubbard model and the one-dimensional Holstein-Hubbard model on contemporary SMP architectures. The parallelized code shows good scalability up to at least eight processors and allows us to solve problems which exceed the capability of sequential DMRG calculations.
Quasi-continuous-time impurity solver for the dynamical mean-field theory with linear scaling in the inverse temperature
2013
We present an algorithm for solving the self-consistency equations of the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) with high precision and efficiency at low temperatures. In each DMFT iteration, the impurity problem is mapped to an auxiliary Hamiltonian, for which the Green function is computed by combining determinantal quantum Monte Carlo (BSS-QMC) calculations with a multigrid extrapolation procedure. The method is numerically exact, i.e., yields results which are free of significant Trotter errors, but retains the BSS advantage, compared to direct QMC impurity solvers, of linear (instead of cubic) scaling with the inverse temperature. The new algorithm is applied to the half-filled Hubbard mo…
Superlight small bipolarons from realistic long-range Coulomb and Fröhlich interactions
2011
We report analytical and numerical results on the two-particle states of the polaronic t-Jp model derived recently with realistic Coulomb and electron-phonon (Frohlich) interactions in doped polar insulators. Eigenstates and eigenvalues are calculated for two different geometries. Our results show that the ground state is a bipolaronic singlet, made up of two polarons. The bipolaron size increases with increasing ratio of the polaron hopping integral t to the exchange interaction Jp but remains small compared to the system size in the whole range 0<t/Jp<1. Furthermore, the model exhibits a phase transition to a superconducting state with a critical temperature well in excess of 100K. In the…
Rotating quantum liquids crystallize
2006
Small crystallites form when finite quantal systems are set highly rotating. This crystallization is independent of the statistics of the particles, and occurs for both trapped bosons and fermions. The spin degree of freedom does not change the tendency for localization. In a highly rotating state, the strongly correlated bosonic and fermionic systems approach to that of classical particles.
Spin-transfer torque driven motion, deformation, and instabilities of magnetic skyrmions at high currents
2020
In chiral magnets, localized topological magnetic whirls, magnetic skyrmions, can be moved by spin polarized electric currents. Upon increasing the current strength, with prospects for high-speed skyrmion motion for spintronics applications in mind, isolated skyrmions deform away from their typical circular shape. We analyze the influence of spin-transfer torques on the shape of a single skyrmion, including its stability upon adiabatically increasing the strength of the applied electric current. For rather compact skyrmions at uniaxial anisotropies well above the critical anisotropy for domain wall formation, we find for high current densities that the skyrmion assumes a non-circular shape …
Anomalous Expansion of Attractively Interacting Fermionic Atoms in an Optical Lattice
2010
Strong correlations can dramatically modify the thermodynamics of a quantum many-particle system. Especially intriguing behaviour can appear when the system adiabatically enters a strongly correlated regime, for the interplay between entropy and strong interactions can lead to counterintuitive effects. A well known example is the so-called Pomeranchuk effect, occurring when liquid 3He is adiabatically compressed towards its crystalline phase. Here, we report on a novel anomalous, isentropic effect in a spin mixture of attractively interacting fermionic atoms in an optical lattice. As we adiabatically increase the attraction between the atoms we observe that the gas, instead of contracting, …
