Properties of Hydrophobic Polymer Melts Tethered to the Water Surface As Determined with in Situ X-ray Reflectivity

Insoluble monolayers of hydrophobic polymers with low glass transition temperature (perfluoropolyethers, polyisoprenes) and a single ionic head group (carboxylic acid, sulfonate) have been characterized at the air/water interface via X-ray reflectivity measurements. The films are considerably thicker (30−420 A) than conventional Langmuir monolayers of low molecular weight substances or polymers with surface active repeat units. The thickness is inversely proportional to the area per head group and is in accordance with a model assuming a solvent-free hydrophobic layer of the same density as the bulk material.

Neutron reflectometry studies on the interfacial width between polystyrene and various poly(alkylmethacrylates)

From neutron reflectometry we have obtained the interfacial width (typically 2-8 nm) between incompatible polymers above the glass transition temperatures. The investigated polymer bilayers consist of a deuterated polystyrene top layer and various poly(alkylmethacrylates) as a bottom layer. We obtained interesting effects of the length of the alkyl group on the interfacial width. Using mean-field theory we calculate Flory-Huggins-Stavermann interaction parameters X from the interfacial width a I data. These results are compared with investigations of the interfacial width between deuterated poly(methylmethacrylate) and respective polyalkyl-methacrylates.

Economical device for measuring thickness of a thin polymer film

An inexpensive device (about $2K) for thickness measurements of thin (<1 μm) polymer films has been constructed. The homogeneous film is placed on a bulk substrate and three semiconductor lasers of different wavelengths are used to measure the reflectances at normal incidence. The thickness can be deduced with typically 4–8 nm uncertainty.

Evaluation of mucoadhesive properties of α,β-poly(N-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide and α,β-poly(aspartylhydrazide) using ATR–FTIR spectroscopy

Abstract The mucoadhesive properties of α,β poly( N -hydroxyethyl)- dl -aspartamide (PHEA) and α,β-polyaspartylhydrazide (PAHy) have been investigated using attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR–FTIR) spectroscopy. In particular, films based on these polymers have been contacted with a mucin solution at pH 7 and, the interfacial interaction and interpenetration between the glycoprotein and PHEA or PAHy have been studied by analysing the ATR–FTIR spectra. A diffusion model using a solution of Ficks' second law has been employed to determine the diffusion coefficient of water into polymeric films as a consequence of interdiffusion which occurs at the polymer film/mucin solution interface.

Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy has been used to follow the chemical evolution of zinc phosphate acid−base cement (ZPC), which has been prepared from unmodified, as well as from aluminum- and zinc-modified orthophosphoric acid. For the first time, amorphous dizinc cyclotetraphosphate octahydrate, Zn2P4O12·8H2O, although hydrolytically instable, has been observed as precursor phase prior to crystallization of α-hopeite, α-Zn3(PO4)2·4H2O, in both systems. Experimental organic matter maturation at 2kbar: Heat-up effect to low temperatures on vitrinite reflectance

Abstract An experimental study was performed to evaluate the effect of heat-up to various low temperatures on vitrinite reflectance ( VR ) at 2 kbar employing the same previously used heat-up procedures, starting material and apparatus. Changes in collagen cross-linking of articular cartilage are revealed by spectral reflectance imaging

Excessive cross-linking of collagen during aging may contribute to degeneration of articular cartilage. Traditionally, the amount of cross-links is derived by using destructive high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). However, a sensitive, non-destructive method could help to evaluate tissue integrity, including cross-links. We increased collagen cross-linking in bovine articular cartilage by controlled threose incubation. During the incubation, optical spectral reflectance images of the samples were captured and related to HPLC results using regression analysis. Effect of Mn Doping on the Optical Properties of Chalcogenide Compounds ZnS and ZnTe

In this paper, the influence of the addition of Mn on the optical properties of the binary compounds ZnS and ZnTe deposited by a close-spaced vacuum sublimation method onto nonoriented glass at different substrate temperatures was considered. The spectral dependences of the transmittance T (λ), reflectance R (λ) and the absorption α (λ), as well as the bandgap for each material (Eg) were measured and calculated.

Miradas urbanas del profesorado iberoamericano desde la cultura visual

We are interested in knowing if there is a proper view of the teaching staff towards the urban reality. We start with verbal and visual descriptions, through images and texts. The research has been developed in Santiago de Chile, Valencia, Lima, Medellin, Montevideo and Buenos Aires, and combines direct participatory actions with personal interviews. The methodology follows a mixed method and is based on a case study that is complemented by research based on the arts. We concluded that there is a particular view of the teaching group towards their own city, which is full of critical reflection. This is a topic that has been little addressed and needs more attention.
