Phytochemical, ecological and antioxidant evaluation of wild Sicilian thyme: Thymbra capitata (L.) Cav.

In a broad survey conducted throughout the Sicily region, 45 different sites were identified where thyme grows wild. All the biotypes collected were classified as Thymbra capitata (L.) Cav. (syn. Thymus capitatus (L.) Hoffmanns. & Link). Cluster analysis based on the main morphological characteristics of the plant led to the division of the biotypes into 3 major groups. All samples were analyzed for their secondary phytochemical metabolites identified in the extracts and the essential oils. LC-UV-DAD/ESI-MS and GC-FID/GC-MS have been applied to characterize the extracts and the essential oils, respectively. Constituents of Peperomia vulcanica Baker &amp; C. H. Wright (Piperaceae) with antiparasitic activity

Abstract The investigation of the CH2Cl2-MeOH (1:1) extract of Peperomia vulcanica which showed antileishmanial activity during preliminary screening led to the isolation of two previously unknown compounds named peperolignan (1) and peperotannin (2) along with 13 known compounds. Their structures were determined on the basis of their spectroscopic data. The isolated compounds were assessed in vitro for their antileishmanial and antiplasmodial activities against Leishmania donovani 1S (MHOM/SD/62/1S) promastigotes and the Plasmodium falciparum chloroquine-sensitive 3D7 strain (Pf3D7), respectively. Phytochemical and pharmacological properties of essential oils from Cedrus species

Natural products frequently exert pharmacological activities. The present review gives an overview of the ethnobotany, phytochemistry and pharmacology of the Cedrus genus, e.g. cytotoxic, spasmolytic immunomodulatory, antiallergic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities. Cancer patients frequently seek remedies from traditional medicinal plants that are believed to exert less side effects than conventional therapy with synthetic drugs. A long-lasting goal of anti-cancer and anti-microbial therapy research is to find compounds with reduced side effects compared to currently approved drugs. Flavonoids from Erythrina schliebenii

Prenylated and O-methylflavonoids including one new pterocarpan (1), three new isoflavones (2–4), and nineteen known natural products (5–23) were isolated and identified from the root, stem bark, and leaf extracts of Erythrina schliebenii. The crude extracts and their constituents were evaluated for antitubercular activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (H37Rv strain), showing MICs of 32–64 μg mL–1 and 36.9–101.8 μM, respectively. Evaluation of their toxicity against the aggressive human breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 indicated EC50 values of 13.0–290.6 μM (pure compounds) and 38.3 to >100 μg mL–1 (crude extracts).

Anti-poliovirus activity of Nerium oleander aqueous extract

Nerium oleander (NO), a member of the Apocynaceae family, is an ornamental plant. In this study, we evaluated the antiviral activity of hot and cold extract of NO against six different viruses such as herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), polio virus type 1 (Sb-1), vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), reovirus type-1 (Reo-1), human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1), and yellow fever virus (YFV). Interestingly the results of plaque reduction assay demonstrated that both, hot extract and cold extract (breastin) of NO inhibited Sb-1 viral infection. Self-Assembly of Water-Mediated Supramolecular Cationic Archimedean Solids

Understanding the self-assembly of small structural units into large supramolecular assemblies remains one of the great challenges in structural chemistry. We have discovered that tetrahedral supramolecular cages, exhibiting the shapes of Archimedean solids, can be self-assembled by hydrogen bonding interactions using tricationic N-donors (1 or 2) in cooperation with water (W). Single crystal X-ray analysis shows that cage (2)4(W)6, assembled in an aqueous solution of cation 2 and KPF6, consists of four tripodal trications linked by six water monomers and resembles the shape of a truncated tetrahedron. Complexation and Extraction of PAHs to the Aqueous Phase with a Dinuclear Pt II Diazapyrenium‐Based Metallacycle

New palladium and platinum metallacycles have been synthesized by reaction between a 2,7-diazapyrenium-based ligand and Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes. The inclusion complexes between the metallacycles and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in CD(3)NO(2) and D(2)O were studied by NMR spectroscopy. The structures of the inclusion complexes of the Pt metallacycle as host with pyrene, phenanthrene, and triphenylene were confirmed by single crystal X-ray crystallography. N-Alkyl Ammonium Resorcinarene Chloride Receptors for Guest Binding in Aqueous Environment

Host systems with guest binding ability in water and/or biological fluids are a current challenge in supramolecular host–guest chemistry. Here we present the first syntheses of water-soluble N-ethanol ammonium resorcinarene chlorides (NARCls) with terminal hydroxyl groups at the upper rim. The NARCls possess deep cavities and are shown to bind a variety of guest molecules such as linear and cyclic alkanes, linear halogenated alkanes, and aromatic fluorophores (naphthalene, p-(phenylazo)phenol) in water through hydrophobic interactions, as well as 1,4-dioxane (a water soluble guest) via hydrogen bonds. Temperature dependent mechanical unfolding of calixarene nanocapsules studied by molecular dynamics simulations.

Using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, we study the temperature dependence of the mechanical unfolding of a model supramolecular complex, a dimer of interlocked calixarene capsules. This system shows reversible transitions between two conformations that are stabilized by different networks of hydrogen bonds. We study the forced dissociation and formation of these networks as a function of temperature and find a strong impact of the nonequilibrium conditions imposed by pulling the system mechanically.
