T Cells Recognize an Immunodominant Epitope of Heat Shock Protein 65 in Kawasaki Disease

2000

Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute systemic vasculitis of infancy and early childhood that is characterized by endothelial cell damage associated with T-cell activation. Lymphocytes infiltrating damaged tissues might be responsible for the disease through secretion of cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, that could cause fever, as well as endothelial tissue damage. Debate is growing about the nature of antigen responsible for T-cell activation in KD. Bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) and purified protein derivative (PPD) hyper-responsiveness was observed in KD patients and this phenomenon was hypothetically ascribed to cross-reactivity between mycobacterial Heat Shock Protein (HSP)…

Higher Fluid Balance Increases the Risk of Death From Sepsis: Results From a Large International Audit

2017

Contains fulltext : 177598.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) OBJECTIVES: Excessive fluid therapy in patients with sepsis may be associated with risks that outweigh any benefit. We investigated the possible influence of early fluid balance on outcome in a large international database of ICU patients with sepsis. DESIGN: Observational cohort study. SETTING: Seven hundred and thirty ICUs in 84 countries. PATIENTS: All adult patients admitted between May 8 and May 18, 2012, except admissions for routine postoperative surveillance. For this analysis, we included only the 1,808 patients with an admission diagnosis of sepsis. Patients were stratified according to quartiles of cumulative f…

A comparison of the transcriptome of Drosophila melanogaster in response to entomopathogenic fungus, ionizing radiation, starvation and cold shock

2015

Background The molecular mechanisms that determine the organism's response to a variety of doses and modalities of stress factors are not well understood. Results We studied effects of ionizing radiation (144, 360 and 864 Gy), entomopathogenic fungus (10 and 100 CFU), starvation (16 h), and cold shock (+4, 0 and -4°C) on an organism's viability indicators (survival and locomotor activity) and transcriptome changes in the Drosophila melanogaster model. All stress factors but cold shock resulted in a decrease of lifespan proportional to the dose of treatment. However, stress-factors affected locomotor activity without correlation with lifespan. Our data revealed both significant similarities …

Ethnocentrism Effects on Consumers’ Behavior during COVID-19 Pandemic

2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has upset everyone’s normal daily activities, generating psychiatric disorders and changing consumers’ preferences. Among others, the agri-food sector has experienced strong changes and, during the lockdown period, Italian consumers modified their purchasing habits in response to the fear and uncertainty generated by the spread of the virus. In order to find out the main consequences of the shock suffered during the period and to understand which factors have affected purchasing choices, an online survey was conducted on 286 Italian consumers. The results show that ethnocentrism has been the factor that most has influenced consumers’ behavior during the lockdown period…

An experimental and kinetic modeling study on the oxidation of 1,3-dioxolane

2021

International audience; The modern catalytic or enzymatic advances allow the production of novel biofuel. Among them, 1,3dioxolane can be produced from formaldehyde and ethylene glycol, both can be obtained from biomass. In this study, the oxidation of 1,3-dioxolane is studied at stoichiometric conditions. The ignition delay times of 1,3-dioxolane/O 2 /inert mixtures were measured in a shock tube and in a rapid compression machine at pressures of 20 to 40 bar and temperatures ranging from 630 to 1300 K. The pressure profiles recorded in the rapid compression machine show a first stage of ignition enlightening the influence of the low temperature chemistry of combustion. Furthermore, mole fr…

An experimental and modeling study of the oxidation of 3-pentanol at high pressure

2019

International audience; High pressure oxidation of 3-pentanol is investigated in a jet-stirred reactor and in a shock tube. Experiments in the reactor were carried out at 10 atm, between 730 and 1180 K, for equivalence ratios of 0.35, 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 1000 ppm fuel, at a constant residence time of 0.7 s. Reactant, product and intermediate species mole fractions were recorded using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and gas chromatography (GC). Ignition delay times were measured for 3-pentanol/O2 mixtures in argon in a shock tube at 20 and 40 bar, in a temperature range of 1000–1470 K and for equivalence ratios of 0.5, 1 and 2. The fuel did not show any low-temperature reactivity…

Correction: Oncogenic extracellular HSP70 disrupts the gap-junctional coupling between capillary cells

2021

High levels of circulating heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) are detected in many cancers. In order to explore the effects of extracellular HSP70 on human microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC), we initially used gap-FRAP technique. Extracellular human HSP70 (rhHSP70), but not rhHSP27, blocks the gap-junction intercellular communication (GJIC) between HMEC, disrupts the structural integrity of HMEC junction plaques, and decreases connexin43 (Cx43) expression, which correlates with the phosphorylation of Cx43 serine residues. Further exploration of these effects identified a rapid transactivation of the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor in a Toll-Like Receptor 4-dependent manner, preceding its in…

The role of the substantia nigra in the control of amygdaloid paroxysmal activity.

1981

AbstractBoth in acute and chronic cats, focal paroxysmal activity evoked in the ventro-basal complex of the amygdala has been inhibited by substantia nigra conditioning stimulation, to a greater extent, than by caudate nucleus activation. Injection of kainic acid into substantia nigra resulted in the disappearance of the caudate inhibition. It is suggested that the final control, exerted by the striatum on the amygdaloid seizures, occurs by means of the substantia nigra.

Skeletal muscle oedema and muscle fibre necrosis during septic shock. Observations with a porcine septic shock model

1994

In domestic pigs, intermitted application of Escherichia coli-endotoxin was used to create an animal model for a prolonged hypo- and hyperdynamic septic shock-like state and to investigate mechanisms of multiple organ failure. Here, we describe the changes in skeletal muscle after 18 h (2 animals) and 48 h (6 animals) of septic shock. Two pigs for each observation period that received physiologic saline solutions instead of endotoxin served as controls. The earliest lesions were endothelial cell damage with endomysial oedema and swelling of mitochondria in muscle fibres. With increasing degree of endothelial cell damage, pericytes showed degenerative changes with cytoplasmic fragmentation a…
