Neurons of the dentate molecular layer in the rabbit hippocampus.

The molecular layer of the dentate gyrus appears as the main entrance gate for information into the hippocampus, i.e., where the perforant path axons from the entorhinal cortex synapse onto the spines and dendrites of granule cells. A few dispersed neuronal somata appear intermingled in between and probably control the flow of information in this area. In rabbits, the number of neurons in the molecular layer increases in the first week of postnatal life and then stabilizes to appear permanent and heterogeneous over the individuals' life span, including old animals. Dimethylsulfoxide as carrier in enzyme cytochemistry.

Addition of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) to the incubation medium of succinate dehydrogenase in a concentration of 10% enhances the staining reaction in the hyphae of the fungus Cercosporella herpotrichoides after an incubation period of 15 min. Controls without DMSO remain unstained. DMSO causes a rapid penetration of the components of the medium through the mucilage that covers the hyphae.

Staining mitochondria in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

After testing various procedures (amidoblack 10B, acid fuchsin-methyl blue, Luxol fast blue MBS-phloxine, toluidine blue O, Jams green B and pinacyanol), three stains can be recommended for staining both types of mitochondria (globose and threadlike) in the cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae: (1) 0.1% solution of amidoblack 10B in citrate buffer (pH 3.0) for 10 min; (2) 0.01% solution of toluidine blue O in phosphate buffer (pH 6.0) for 30 min; (3) 0.01% solution of Janus green B in distilled water (pH 5.6) for 30 min. Phenotypic and genotypic evaluation of slime production by conventional and molecular microbiological techniques.

Twenty-nine staphylococcal isolates from different clinical samples were tested for slime production: phenotypic characterization was carried out using Christensen test (tube test) and Congo red agar plate test (CRA plate test), while the presence and expression of icaA and icaD genes were evaluated by real-time PCR. In 79.3% of studied strains there was a concordance between slime production and presence of icaA and icaD genes, and between lack of slime production and absence of both or only one of the tested genes. These inflammation-induced structures, termed lymphoid neogenesis or tertiary lymphoid organs, may reflect differential stromal responsiveness to the process of lymphoid neogenesis. Advanced imaging technologies are enabling targeted biopsies or endoscopic resections due to better visualization of the mucosal architecture. This new concept of ‘smart biopsies’ is in particular important for patients with higher risk for development cancer (e.g. ulcerative colitis) but can also be beneficial for screening purposes. This short review will focus on new imaging modalities like chromoendoscopy, digital chromoendoscopy, high-definition endoscopy and confocal laser endomicroscopy in the lower GI tract which will be crucial in the future to detect colorectal neoplasia earlier then before.

The influence of the nature of the pickets, as well as their number, is discussed in terms of stability, kinetics of metalation, structure, and distortion of the porphyrin. The present report is concerned with a stereoselective, reliable route to trans-1,2-disubstituted cyclopropanes and in particular to (S,S)-1-tosyloxymethyl-2-fluoromethyl-cyclopropane (1) and (R,R)-1-tosyloxymethyl-2-fluoromethyl-cyclopropane (ent-1) as conformationally restricted, terminally fluorinated C4-building blocks for medicinal chemistry. The enzymatic kinetic resolution based synthesis of 1 and ent-1 utilises inexpensive, commercially available starting materials. Recently cDNAs coding for cell surface molecules have been isolated from sponges. The molecules for alpha-integrin, galectin, and receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK), obtained from the marine sponge, Geodia cydonium, have been described earlier. Recombinant cDNA encapsulation in small liposomes with hepatocyte access ability.

Liposomal encapsulation efficiency of a recombinant cDNA was studied by several procedures. We observed that supernatant fraction of ultracentrifuged liposomes prepared by extrusion through polycarbonate filters of 400 nm pore size yielded a very homogeneous suspension of small (50 nm diameter) unilamellar liposomes with highest DNA/lipid ratio and great ability to access to hepatocytes.
