Strain-gradient elastic-plastic material models and assessment of the higher order boundary conditions
2007
Abstract A gradient elastic material model exhibiting gradient kinematic and isotropic hardening is addressed within a thermodynamic framework suitable to cope with nonlocal-type continua. The Clausius–Duhem inequality is used, in conjunction with the concepts of energy residual, insulation condition and locality recovery condition, to derive all the pertinent restrictions upon the constitutive equations, including the PDEs and the related higher order (HO) boundary conditions that govern the gradient material behaviour. Through a suitable limiting procedure, the HO boundary conditions are shown to interpret the action, upon the body's boundary surface, of idealized extra HO constraints cap…
Trattamento endodontico di un incisivo centrale calcificato
2011
The late Hauterivian Faraoni "Oceanic Anoxic Event" at Río Argos (southern Spain): an assessment on the level of oxygen depletion.
2013
14 pages; International audience; An integrated study of multiple geochemical proxies (TOC, δ13Ccarb, trace metallic elements, iron speciation) on the late Hauterivian Faraoni Oceanic Anoxic Event has been performed along the hemi-pelagic section of Río Argos (south-eastern Spain) in order to better constrain the environmental perturbations linked to this event in the Subbetic domain. In the studied section, the TOC is relatively low (b0.5 wt.%) except for one sample at the base of the Faraoni horizon, where it reaches 1.5 wt.%. The δ13Ccarb signal is characterized by a minor long-term increase, primarily attributed to an enhanced organic matter burial. However, both organic and isotopic si…
Variational Formulations for Coupled BE/FE Methods in Elastostatics
1994
A feedback mechanism controls rDNA copy number evolution in yeast independently of natural selection.
2022
Ribosomal DNA (rDNA) is the genetic loci that encodes rRNA in eukaryotes. It is typically arranged as tandem repeats that vary in copy number within the same species. We have recently shown that rDNA repeats copy number in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is controlled by cell volume via a feedback circuit that senses cell volume by means of the concentration of the free upstream activator factor (UAF). The UAF strongly binds the rDNA gene promoter, but is also able to repress SIR2 deacetylase gene transcription that, in turn, represses rDNA amplification. In this way, the cells with a smaller DNA copy number than what is optimal evolve to increase that copy number until they reach a numb…
A nonlocal p-Laplacian evolution equation with Neumann boundary conditions
2008
In this paper we study the nonlocal p-Laplacian type diffusion equation,ut (t, x) = under(∫, Ω) J (x - y) | u (t, y) - u (t, x) |p - 2 (u (t, y) - u (t, x)) d y . If p > 1, this is the nonlocal analogous problem to the well-known local p-Laplacian evolution equation ut = div (| ∇ u |p - 2 ∇ u) with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. We prove existence and uniqueness of a strong solution, and if the kernel J is rescaled in an appropriate way, we show that the solutions to the corresponding nonlocal problems converge strongly in L∞ (0, T ; Lp (Ω)) to the solution of the p-Laplacian with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. The extreme case p = 1, that is, the nonlocal analogous t…
The Hu-Washizu variational principle for the identification of imperfections in beams
2008
This paper presents a procedure for the identification of imperfections of structural parameters based on displacement measurements by static tests. The proposed procedure is based on the well-known Hu–Washizu variational principle, suitably modified to account for the response measurements, which is able to provide closed-form solutions to some inverse problems for the identification of structural parameter imperfections in beams. Analysis of Germline Gene Copy Number Variants of Patients with Sporadic Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma Reveals Specific Variations
2013
Objectives: The rapid fatality of pancreatic cancer is, in large part, the result of diagnosis at an advanced stage in the majority of patients. Identification of individuals at risk of developing pancreatic adenocarcinoma would be useful to improve the prognosis of this disease. There is presently no biological or genetic indicator allowing the detection of patients at risk. Our main goal was to identify copy number variants (CNVs) common to all patients with sporadic pancreatic cancer. Methods: We analyzed gene CNVs in leukocyte DNA from 31 patients with sporadic pancreatic adenocarcinoma and from 93 matched contr…
A Computational Study on Temperature Variations in MRgFUS Treatments Using PRF Thermometry Techniques and Optical Probes
2021
Structural and metabolic imaging are fundamental for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up in oncology. Beyond the well-established diagnostic imaging applications, ultrasounds are currently emerging in the clinical practice as a noninvasive technology for therapy. Indeed, the sound waves can be used to increase the temperature inside the target solid tumors, leading to apoptosis or necrosis of neoplastic tissues. The Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) technology represents a valid application of this ultrasound property, mainly used in oncology and neurology. In this paper
A first comparative map of copy number variations in the sheep genome.
2011
article i nfo We carried out a cross species cattle-sheep array comparative genome hybridization experiment to identify copy number variations (CNVs) in the sheep genome analysing ewes of Italian dairy or dual-purpose breeds (Bagnolese, Comisana, Laticauda, Massese, Sarda, and Valle del Belice) using a tiling oligonucleotide array with ~385,000 probes designed on the bovine genome. We identified 135 CNV regions (CNVRs; 24 reported in more than one animal) covering ~10.5 Mb of the virtual sheep genome referred to the bovine genome (0.398%) with a mean and a median equal to 77.6 and 55.9 kb, respectively. A comparative analysis between the identified sheep CNVRs and those reported in cattle a…
