Root and Foot Rot of Lantana Caused by Phytophthora cryptogea

Lantana (Lantana camara L.) is an evergreen shrub in the Verbenaceae. In some countries, this plant has been declared a noxious weed. However, a number of sterile or near-sterile forms are cultivated as attractive flowered potted and garden plants. In early spring 2004, ≈4,000 potted, small trees of lantana grown in a screenhouse in a commercial nursery of ornamentals near Giarre, Sicily, showed symptoms of chlorosis, defoliation, and sudden collapse of the entire plant. These aboveground symptoms were associated with a reduced root system, rot of feeder roots, and brown discoloration of the base of the stem. Chemical composition and biological activity of Salvia verbenaca essential oil

Salvia verbenaca L. (syn. S. minore) is a perennial herb known in the traditional medicine of Sicily as “spaccapetri” and is used to resolve cases of kidney stones, chewing the fresh leaves or in decoction. The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from aerial parts of S. verbenaca collected in Piano Battaglia (Sicily) on July 2009, was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The oil was strongly characterized by fatty acids (39.5%) and carbonylic compounds (21.2%), with hexadecanoic acid (23.1%), ( Z)-9-octadecenoic acid (11.1%) and benzaldehyde (7.3%) as the main constituents. Abstract From the plant cell suspension cultures of Tauwolfia serpentina Benth ., which were cultivated in the alkaloid-production medium after feeding of ajmaline (1) , a new indole alkaloid 19- ( S )-hydroxy- N b -methylraumacline ( 4 ) was isolated. The structure of 4 first elucidated by spectroscopic analysis was determined by the chemical synthesis from ajmaline ( 1 ).

Structural considerations on the iridoids as anti-inflammatory agents.

Abstract Twelve iridoid glycosides have been evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activity on two models: the carrageenan-induced mouse paw edema and the TPA-induced mouse ear edema. Loganic acid was the most active (44.4% edema inhibition) on the former test, whereas the catalpol derivative mixture isolated from Scrophularia, aucubin, verbenalin, and loganin, showed the highest activity (from 72.0 to 80.0% edema inhibition) on the latter. The results allowed us to establish the relationship between the structure and anti-inflammatory activity on the basis of the different patterns of substitution, particularly hydroxylation, unsaturation, and acylation.

The Influence of Aroma Compounds on Senzorial Traits of Wines From the Apold Depression

Abstract The present study aims at investigating aroma compounds in three wine varietals (Pinot gris, Traminer roz, Riesling) from Apold, the county of Sibiu, production of 2014, and their importance in realizing the sensorial profile of wines. Thus, it is ascertained that Traminer roz contains the highest amount of esters - 583.846 mg/L, a value that leads to the sensorial identification of floral and fruity notes. Higher alcohols determined through chromatography imprint specific traits to Pinot gris wines: bittersweet, floral notes validated through the determined amount (479.449 mg/L). Chemical Composition of the Leaf Oil ofLantana camara

The essential oil of the fresh leaves of Lantana camera growing in Dehra Dun was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The major constituents identified in the oil included β-caryophyllene (23.3%), α-humulene (11.5%), germacrene D (10.9%), davanone (7.3%) and γ-curcumene (6.3%).
