Mechanical, thermal and acoustical characterizations of an insulating bio-based composite made from sunflower stalks particles and chitosan

2014

International audience; This study has for objective the determination of thermal, mechanical and acoustical properties of insulating bio-based composite made with chitosan and sunflower's stalks particles. An experimental design was established to find the size grading of particles, the ratio chitosan/sunflower particles and the stress of compaction influencing the thermal and mechanical properties. Composites with a thermal conductivity $(\kappa)$ of 0.056 W/m/K, a maximum stress $(\sigma_{\text{max}})$ of 2 MPa and an acoustic coefficient of absorption $(\alpha)$ of 0.2 were obtained with a ratio of chitosan of 4.3% (w/w) and a size grading of particles higher to 3 mm. These mechanical a…

A bottom-up harmonized energy-environmental models for europe (BOHEEME): A case study on the thermal insulation of the EU-28 building stock

2021

Abstract The paper presents a methodological approach, called “BOttom-up Harmonized Energy-Environmental Models for Europe” (BOHEEME), that combines bottom-up modeling, energy dynamic simulation, and life cycle assessment for evaluating and comparing the energy and environmental effects of different renovation strategies of the residential EU building stocks, from micro to the macro level. The study defines 672 building models representative of the residential EU-28 building stocks built before 2010, called archetypes, and the improvement of their envelope, applying different insulation materials from a traditional one to bio-based materials and studying their environmental effects via LCA.…

Long-term properties and end-of-life of polymers from renewable resources

2017

[EN] The long-term properties and end-of-life of polymers are not antagonist issues. They actually are inherently linked by the duality between durability and degradation. The control of the service-todisposal pathway at useful performance, along with low-impact disposal represents an added-value. Therefore, the routes of design, production, and discarding of bio-based polymers must be carefully strategized. In this sense, the combination of proper valorisation techniques, i.e. material, energetic and/ or biological at the most appropriate stage should be targeted. Thus, the consideration of the end-of-life of a material for a specific application, instead of the end-of-life of a material s…

End-of-life and waste management of disposable beverage cups.

2021

Different human activities have caused and currently cause catastrophic environmental phenomena, and unfortunately, a significant negative contribution to these catastrophic phenomena can be attributed to uncontrolled plastic production, use and release everywhere. On the other hand, the plastics offer numerous comforts and advantages, and for this reason, the modern life is unthinkable without plastic. Currently, numerous scientific papers and large audience advertisings, related to the production and use of polymers made by natural sources, i.e. bio-based polymers, as a valid alternative to the petroleum-based counterparts, have been published. Therefore, for production of daily disposabl…

Processing and Properties of Biopolymer/Polyhydroxyalkanoates Blends

2011

In this paper, the processability and the performance of a biodegradable polymer, Mater-Bi, and of its blends with either a sample of poly (hydroxy alkanoates) (PHA) or with bacterial biomass containing PHAs were compared. Adding PHA or directly the biomass containing it allows improving the processability of the matrix. Moreover, the mechanical behaviour of the systems was compared considering two different preparation methods, namely compression and injection moulding. The injection moulded samples show poorer mechanical performances than those of the compression moulded systems. The impact strength significantly improves when PHA is added while it reduces when bacterial biomass is used i…

Contribution to the development of 100% bio-based composites : synthesis of bio-based polyepoxides, supercritical CO2 treatment of hemp fibers and im…

2018

This thesis contributes to the development of 100% bio-based hemp/epoxy composites. Current environmental issues favor the emergence of materials derived from renewable resources such as plant fibres and a wide range of bio-based building-blocks, source of epoxy prepolymers in particular. An intensive investigation of the two constituents (hemp fibres and polyepoxidic matrix) is carried out before the composites manufacturing. Supercritical CO2 treatment is applied to hemp fibres used as reinforcement in composite materials. This treatment, not optimized, leads to better individualization as well as a decrease in the hygroscopic power of the fibres. These aspects, which are essential in ord…

Efficient microwave-assisted synthesis of glycerol monodecanoate

2017

International audience; Solvent-free microwave-assisted synthesis was carried out to prepare 2,3-dihydroxypropyl decanoate, by esterification of decanoic acid in the presence of two distinct glycerol derivatives, glycidol, and glycerol carbonate, respectively. The process described is based on microwaves heating source with electrical power in the range of 200–400 W, involving stoichiometric proportions of decanoic acid and glycerol derivatives, and using catalytic amounts of TBAI used as organocatalyst. Conversion and selectivity rates of esterification reactions were monitored by 1H and 13C{1H} NMR spectroscopy. The predominantly formed ester, 2,3-dihydroxypropyl decanoate was fully chara…

Biopolyester-based systems containing naturally occurring compounds with enhanced thermooxidative stability

2016

Background This work presents a sustainable approach for the stabilization of polylactic acid (PLA) against thermo-oxidative aging. Methods Naturally occurring phenolic and polyphenolic compounds, such as ferulic acid (FerAc), vanillic acid (VanAc), quercetin (Querc) and vitamin E (VitE), were introduced into PLA. Results The preliminary characterization of the systems formulated containing different amounts of natural stabilizers showed that all compounds used acted as plasticizers, leading to a decrease in rheological functions with respect to neat PLA, without significantly modifying the crystallinity of the raw material. The study of the thermo-oxidative behavior of neat PLA and PLA/nat…
