Understanding social behavior evolutions through agent-based modeling
2012
Agent-based social simulation as a computational approach to social simulation has been largely used to explore social phenomena. The purpose of this paper is to describe a theoretical model of transmission and evolution of social behaviors in a network of artificial societies (artificial world) using agent-based modeling technology. In this model, each agent (society) is subdivided into social behaviors where individual and social learning occur. The agent-agent interactions are carried out by their social behaviors; otherwise the agent-environment interactions through consumption of ecological resources by its social behaviors in repression and satisfaction. We distinguish social behavior…
Parametric and nonparametric A-Laplace problems: Existence of solutions and asymptotic analysis
2021
We give sufficient conditions for the existence of weak solutions to quasilinear elliptic Dirichlet problem driven by the A-Laplace operator in a bounded domain Ω. The techniques, based on a variant of the symmetric mountain pass theorem, exploit variational methods. We also provide information about the asymptotic behavior of the solutions as a suitable parameter goes to 0 + . In this case, we point out the existence of a blow-up phenomenon. The analysis developed in this paper extends and complements various qualitative and asymptotic properties for some cases described by homogeneous differential operators.
Biogeographic Anomalies in Shore Flies as Revealed in Revision of the Shore-Fly Genus Subpelignus Papp (Diptera: Ephydridae)
2022
Subpelignus Papp is revised, including description of (1) a new species, S. gagnei Zatwarnicki and Mathis (New Zealand. North Island. ND: Whananaki South (35°31.1'S, 174°27.2'E); (2) two new combinations, Subpelignus antennalis (Aldrich, 1931) and Subpelignus limosinus (Becker, 1896); (3) a new synonym, S. hortobagensis Papp, 1983 = S. limosinus Becker; and (4) description of a new subgenus, Niratissa Zatwarnicki and Mathis, for S. maculipennis Mathis and Zatwarnicki. Descriptions of revised and the newly described species include some of the first illustrations of structures of the male terminalia. Detailed locality data for all species examined are provided. For perspective and to facilit…
Search for strong gravity signatures in same-sign dimuon final states using the ATLAS detector at the LHC
2012
A search for microscopic black holes has been performed in a same-sign dimuon final state using 1.3 fb[superscript −1] of proton–proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The data are found to be consistent with the expectation from the Standard Model and the results are used to derive exclusion contours in the context of a low scale gravity model.
Observationally Weak TGFs in the RHESSI Data
2019
Abstract Terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs) are sub‐millisecond bursts of high energetic gamma radiation associated with intracloud flashes in thunderstorms. In this paper we use the simultaneity of lightning detections by World Wide Lightning Location Network to find TGFs in the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) data that are too faint to be identified by standard search algorithms. A similar approach has been used in an earlier paper, but here we expand the data set to include all years of RHESSI + World Wide Lightning Location Network data and show that there is a population of observationally weak TGFs all the way down to 0.22 of the RHESSI detection thresh…
Radio emissions from double RHESSI TGFs
2016
Abstract A detailed analysis of Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs) is performed in association with World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) sources and very low frequency (VLF) sferics recorded at Duke University. RHESSI clock offset is evaluated and found to experience changes on the 5 August 2005 and 21 October 2013, based on the analysis of TGF‐WWLLN matches. The clock offsets were found for all three periods of observations with standard deviations less than 100 μs. This result opens the possibility for the precise comparative analyses of RHESSI TGFs with the other types of data (WWLLN, radio measurements, etc.) In ca…
Current and emerging developments in subseasonal to decadal prediction
2020
Weather and climate variations on subseasonal to decadal time scales can have enormous social, economic, and environmental impacts, making skillful predictions on these time scales a valuable tool for decision-makers. As such, there is a growing interest in the scientific, operational, and applications communities in developing forecasts to improve our foreknowledge of extreme events. On subseasonal to seasonal (S2S) time scales, these include high-impact meteorological events such as tropical cyclones, extratropical storms, floods, droughts, and heat and cold waves. On seasonal to decadal (S2D) time scales, while the focus broadly remains similar (e.g., on precipitation, surface and upper-…
An evaluation of the estimation of road traffic emission factors from tracer studies
2010
Road traffic emission factors (EFs) are one of the main sources of uncertainties in emission inventories; it is necessary to develop methods to reduce these uncertainties to manage air quality more efficiently. Recently an alternative method has been proposed to estimate the EFs. In that work the emission factors were estimated from a long term tracer study developed in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) Vietnam. A passive tracer was continuously emitted from a finite line source placed in one side of an urban street canyon. Simultaneously, the resulting tracer concentrations were monitored at the other side of the street. The results of this experiment were used to calculate the dispersion factors an…
Prey-predator strategies in a multiagent system
2006
This paper describes the prey-predator multiagent system which can be considered as an abstraction of more complex real-world models. Both the prey and the predators are considered as autonomous agents with their own behaviors and perception of the environment. In particular, we propose a simulator which lets study different strategies such as cooperation and individualism. An extensive experiment has been carried out in order to prove the effectiveness of the latter.
