Previous results have shown that the acid-soluble fraction of the nacre matrix of the freshwater paleoheterodont bivalve Unio pictorum shell displays a number of remarkable properties, such as calcium-binding activity, the presence of extensive glycosylations and the capacity to interfere at low concentration with in vitro calcium carbonate precipitation. Recent Advances in Affinity MOF-Based Sorbents with Sample Preparation Purposes

This review summarizes the recent advances concerning metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) modified with several biomolecules (e.g., amino acids, nucleobases, proteins, antibodies, aptamers, etc.) as ligands to prepare affinity-based sorbents for application in the sample preparation field. The preparation and incorporation strategies of these MOF-based affinity materials were described. Mineralogical and Chemical Records of Icelandic Dust Sources Upon Ny-Ålesund (Svalbard Islands)

This work aims to identify the geochemical and mineralogical markers of Icelandic dust and to differentiate it from the dust of local origin deposited at the Ny-Ålesund station. We characterized representative sediment samples from Iceland and Svalbard and compared them to a set of aerosol samples collected in Ny-Ålesund to check the existence and type of the mineralogical markers. Lung fixation for the preservation of air spaces.

The procedures for the fixation of entire lungs of small rodents are presented together with various techniques used to verify the structural integrity of the lung tissue. To achieve this, the lungs were dissected out from rats and mice killed by ether overdose. The specimens were rinsed with isotonic saline and fixation solution under low vacuum conditions. Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the quality of keratectomy specimens created with the Amadeus® microkeratome (AMO) using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Setting: Johannes Gutenberg-University Hospital, Department of Ophthalmology, Mainz, and the Department of Anatomy, Justus Liebig-University, Giessen, Germany. Methods: Corneal cuts were performed in freshly enucleated pig eyes using the Amadeus microkeratome with 9 combinations of oscillation rate and head-advance speed. In this work, we compare experimental data on myoglobin hydrated powders from elastic neutron scattering, broadband dielectric spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. Our aim is to obtain new insights on the connection between the protein dynamical transition, a fundamental phenomenon observed in proteins whose physical origin is highly debated, and the liquid-liquid phase transition (LLPT) possibly occurring in protein hydration water and related to the existence of a low temperature critical point in supercooled water.
