Seasonal and annual changes in physical performance capacity of elite athletes

Seasonal and annual changes in physical performance characteristics of 10 female and 28 male cross-country skiers, 5 male nordic combination skiers and 7 male skijumpers were studied. Following parameters were investigated on most of the athletes: maximal oxygen uptake (maxVo₂) in leg and arm work, vertical running velocity (Vv), total isometric leg force (TLF), percentage of slow twitch muscle fibers (%ST fibers) and succinate dehydrogenase activity (SDH) in m. vastus lateralis. Increased activities of prolyl 4-hydroxylase and galactosylhydroxylysyl glucosyltransferase, enzymes of collagen biosynthesis, in skeletal muscle of endurance-trained mice.

The activities of prolyl 4-hydroxylase (PH) and galactosylhydroxylysyl glucosyltransferase (GGT), and the concentration of 4-hydroxyproline were measured in red and white parts of quadriceps femoris muscle of mice after 3, 10, and 20 sessions of daily endurance training. The activities of PH and GGT increased in the red part of the muscle after training for 3 and 10 times and returned to the control level after 20 training sessions. Proteolytic capacity in mouse cardiac muscle was analyzed 1, 3, and 6 days after exhaustive intermittent or submaximal prolonged running. No significant changes were recorded in the activities of acid or alkaline proteases, β-glucuronidase or trypsin inhibitor. Similarly, no changes were found in the rates of acid or neutral autolysis.

Alkaline and myofibrillar protease activities of rectus femoris, soleus, and tibialis anterior muscles and the pooled sample of gastrocnemius and plantaris muscles were analyzed in male NMRI-mice during a running-training program of 3, 10, or 20 daily 1-h sessions. Seven physically fit (well-trained, maximal oxygen uptake 69.6 +/- 4.4 ml x kg-1 min-1) and eight less fit (moderately trained, maximal oxygen uptake 56.1 +/- 5.7 ml x kg-1 x min-1) healthy male subjects were exercised for 4 h by bicycle ergometry against a pedalling resistance calculated to cause oxygen consumption corresponding to approximately 30% of each individual's maximal oxygen uptake value. The effects of 8-9 weeks of running and swimming training on the transmural distribution of cardiac glucose uptake and protein synthesis in isolated perfused heart were studied in male rats. Diabetes alters microvascular structure and function and is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. In diabetic skeletal muscle, impaired angiogenesis and reduced VEGF-A expression have been observed, whereas in healthy muscle exercise is known to have opposite effects. Effects of a short-term vitamin E deficiency on some lipid peroxidative properties were investigated in mouse cardiac and skeletal muscles. The concentration of vitamin E decreased 35.8% in 5 weeks and 61.2% in 12 weeks in skeletal muscle. The corresponding decrease in cardiac muscle was 65.7% in 12 weeks. Simultaneously the susceptibility of muscle homogenates to in vitro lipid peroxidation increased with 48.6% (5 weeks) and 44.5% (12 weeks) in skeletal muscle and with 101.8% (12 weeks) in cardiac muscle. Lysosomal changes related to ageing and physical exercise in mouse cardiac and skeletal muscles.

Physical exercise increased the activities of arylsulphatase, cathepsin D and β-glucuronidase in mouse skeletal muscle but not in cardiac muscle. Exercise-induced lysosomal response was more prominent in young adult than in senescent mice. The lipofuscin content of cardiac and skeletal muscles increased markedly during ageing and was also found to increase slightly after exertion in young mice, but not in senescent ones.

Night-rest urinary catecholamine excretion in relation to aspects of free time, work and background data in a teacher group

Free time, work and background data were related to night-rest catecholamine excretion rates in a teacher group (n = 137) during an autumn term. The explained interindividual variance increased slightly towards the end of the term. Adrenaline excretion was predicted better than noradrenaline, notedly by coffee consumption, amount of physical activity, and subjective stress feelings which explained 16% of the variance in adrenaline excretion during night rest. However, the results indicated that the differences in catecholamine excretion during night rest remained mostly unpredictable.

The activities of some antioxidative and hexose monophosphate shunt enzymes, as well as of 2 hydrolases were studied in skeletal muscle biopsy specimens taken from 39 patients with neuromuscular diseases and from 15 controls. The susceptibility to exercise-induced myopathy was studied by histological and biochemical methods in various skeletal muscles of mice 3-4 days after a single bout of prolonged running. Transmural distribution of biochemical markers of total protein and collagen synthesis, myocardial contraction speed and capillary density in the rat left ventricle in angiotensin II-induced hypertension.

The effect of angiotensin II-induced hypertension on selected biochemical parameters was studied in Sprague-Dawley rats. Angiotensin II infusion at rates of 41.7 micrograms h-1 kg-1 and 12.5 micrograms h-1 kg-1 for 2, 5, 10 and 15 days elevated the systolic blood pressure from 143 +/- 7 mmHg to 215-230 mmHg (P less than 0.001) and 185-195 mmHg (P less than 0.001), respectively. Increased prolyl 4-hydroxylase activity in the myocardium of endurance-trained mice.

Endurance training over 3, 10 or 20 days increased the activity of prolyl 4-hydroxylase (PH) in the left ventricle of mice. No increase was observed in the weight of the left ventricle, in galactosylhydroxylysyl glucosyltransferase activity or in hydroxyproline concentration. The increase in PH suggests that the synthesis of collagen increases during physiological adaptation of the heart to endurance exercise without changes in the ventricle weight or its total collagen content.

Prednisolone decreases exercise-induced acid hydrolase response in mouse skeletal muscle.

Male NMRI-mice were subjected to exhaustive treadmill exercise. 3 and 6 days after the exertion, quadriceps femoris muscles were examined histologically and analyzed for acid hydrolases in order to follow the degree and progress of injuries. Prednisolone (PRED), an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid, was given to some of the animals in order to modify the exercise response. Regional glucose uptake in perfused hearts, and the activities of several glycolytic enzymes contributing to the glucose metabolism in perfused and nonperfused hearts were studied in male and female rats after 8–9 weeks of swimming training. The left ventricular glucose uptake showed a transmural gradient in the sedentary animals, the subendocardial uptake being 30% and 12% higher than that of the subepicardial layer in the males and females, respectively. Rats were exercised for 6 h by swimming. Phenylalanine incorporation into myocardial proteins was increased when 2 h had elapsed after the termination of exercise. Cyclic GMP concentration did not change during the experiment, which indicates that cyclic GMP does not act directly as a trigger of myocardial protein synthesis in volume overload.

Activity of acid hydrolases in skeletal muscle of untrained, trained and detrained mice of different ages.

The activities of p-nitrophenylphosphatase, beta-glucuronidase and beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase from crude skeletal muscle homogenates of 4 and 7 months old mice were assayed after short-term intensive and long-term moderate training and after terminated training. In the older untrained mice the activity of the hydrolases was higher than in the younger mice. The level increased with training and this increase was far more pronounced in the older animals. Chronic daily intake of 0.5% H2O2 in drinking water decreased Se-dependent glutathione peroxidase (Se-GSHPx) activity in rat skeletal muscle, kidney and liver. Non-Se GSHPx activity decreased in kidney. Deprivation of drinking water decreased Se-GSHPx activity in kidney and non-Se GSHPx activity in kidney and liver. H2O2 intake decreased activity of catalase in rat skeletal muscle. H2O2 intake or water deprivation caused no changes in these enzyme activities in mice.

We studied the effects of running-training, heavy exercise and termination of training on the heart weight, the ratio heart to body weight and the cardiac muscle activities of actomyosin ATPase, citrate synthase, succinate dehydrogenase, cytochrome c oxidase, malate dehydrogenase, adenylate kinase and beta-glucuronidase with adult male NMRI-mice. Stable hypertrophy (6-7%), estimated by the ratio heart or ventricle weight to body weight, was achieved by 28 exercises and it was dependent on the running speed (20 vs. 25 m X min-1).
