Consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on children with a speech and language disorder and their therapy
2021
Background The COVID-19 pandemic caused massive restrictions in our daily life. Kindergartens and schools were closed (lockdown) and children were forced to pause their therapy. Materials and Methods We conducted a survey during August and October 2020 and asked parents of children with a speech and language disorder about their child's therapy during lockdown and their fears and sorrows associated with it. Results Parents of 39 children participated (age: 6,15 years (3,06 - 10,09)). 34 children received speech therapy before lockdown. This therapy was paused for 17 children during lockdown. The other 17 children still received speech therapy during lockdown with the following alterations: …
La Corte EDU si pronuncia sulla perseguibilità dei reati commessi dalle vittime di tratta
2021
The note to judgment deals with the case of V.C.L. and A.N. v. the United Kingdom (applications nos. 77587/12 and 74603/12), in which the European Court of Human Rights considered for the first time the relationship between Article 4 (prohibition of forced labour) of the European Convention and the prosecution of potential victims of trafficking. In doing so, the Court held unanimously that there had been a violation of Article 4 and of Article 6 (right to a fair trial), since, despite the existence of credible suspicion that V.C.L. and A.N. had been trafficked, neither the police nor the prosecution service had referred them to a competent authority for assessment. For its judgment, the Co…
Young Scottish National Party Members’ Perceptions of Scotland and the United Kingdom
2021
This paper explores young Scottish National Party (SNP) members’ views of Scotland and the United Kingdom. It is based on the analysis of the results of an online survey and interviews with young SNP members about their political engagement and their understanding of national identity, which we carried out from 2018 to 2020. Our study focuses especially on how the members of Young Scots for Independence (YSI) and SNP Students, the youth and student wings of the SNP, perceive the Scottish nation and the UK. This paper reflects upon the way these young people define Scottishness and Scottish society. It also discusses the role of national identity in their campaign for independence. Do they w…

Metabolismo lipídico y clasificación de las hiperlipemias
2021
This chapter summarises, and updates, lipid metabolism. Both pathways, exogenous metabolisms route via the chylomicrons, and the endogenous pathway of very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL). The reverse cholesterol metabolism will also be mentioned. It also includes the current classification of hyperlipidaemias or hyperlipoproteinaemias, with a reminder of the phenotype classification, and further developments of the aetiological classification. Both parts have updated references, with which knowledge of this vast subject can be expanded.
Characterisation of gd T cells infiltrating colorectal cancer
2021
We have read with great interest the paper by de Vries et al 1 reporting on the immune landscape of colorectal cancer (CRC) by high-dimensional mass cytometry, flow cytometry and single cell RNA sequencing. Among clusters of immune cells infiltrating CRC, authors have identified two populations of γδ T cells: one programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1)+ population is almost exclusively found in DNA mismatch repair (MMR)-deficient (d) tumours, constitutes up to 8.4% of CD45+ cells and has an activated phenotype, and a PD-1− counterpart with a resting phenotype, which is also found in colorectal normal mucosa and MMR-proficient (p) tumours. Using deconvolution of transcriptomic datasets and si…
Many Images for a Continent. An Introduction
2021
For too long, the European Union has presented itself as a haven for bureaucrats, united by a hegemonic will practiced through the hyper-standardization of every aspect of social life. The result of this representation, so often weaponised by political forces hostile to the European project, has also been the reason the many images (normative acts, community projects, cultural initiatives etc.) that constitute the European discourse struggle to be recognized and read into a basic everyday narrative capable of shaping a European horizon of shared destinies. This book recognises the importance of the European discourse in its symbolic dimension and the need for it to be circulated via a wide-…
0.1-10 MeV Neutron Soft Error Rate in Accelerator and Atmospheric Environments
2021
Neutrons with energies between 0.1-10 MeV can significantly impact the Soft Error Rate (SER) in SRAMs manufactured in scaled technologies, with respect to high-energy neutrons. Their contribution is evaluated in accelerator, ground level and avionic (12 km of altitude) environments. Experimental cross sections were measured with monoenergetic neutrons from 144 keV to 17 MeV, and results benchmarked with Monte Carlo simulations. It was found that even 144 keV neutrons can induce upsets due to elastic scattering. Moreover, neutrons in the 0.1-10 MeV energy range can induce more than 60% of the overall upset rate in accelerator applications, while their contribution can exceed 18% in avionics.…
Corrosion inhibition performance of a structurally well-defined 1,2,3-triazole derivative on mild steel-hydrochloric acid interface
2021
Abstract In the present work, a new 1,4-disubstituted-1,2,3-triazole product, named 4-[1-(4-methoxy-phenyl)-1H-[1,2,3]triazol-4-ylmethyl]-morpholine (MPTM) was successfully synthesized under click chemistry regime. The structure of the new compound that has a rigid triazole moiety and a flexible morpholine ligand has been characterized using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HRMS, and FTIR spectroscopy. Its inhibition performance for mild steel in acidic medium 1 M HCl has been studied by utilizing a combination of experimental, spectroscopic and computational methods. The electrochemical characterization was carried out by a gravimetric study, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and potentiodynam…
AAZTA5-squaramide ester competing with DOTA-, DTPA- and CHX-A″-DTPA-analogues: Promising tool for 177Lu-labeling of monoclonal antibodies under mild …
2021
Abstract Background Combining the advantages of both cyclic and acyclic chelator systems, AAZTA (1,4-bis(carboxymethyl)-6-[bis(carboxymethyl)]amino-6-methylperhydro-1,4-diazepine) is well suited for complexation of various diagnostic and therapeutic radiometals such as gallium-68, scandium-44 and lutetium-177 under mild conditions. Due to its specificity for primary amines and pH dependent binding properties, squaric acid (SA) represents an excellent tool for selective coupling of the appropriate chelator to different target vectors. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate radiolabeling properties of the novel bifunctional AAZTA5-SA being coupled to a model antibody (bevacizumab) i…
Incivility in online news and Twitter: effects on attitudes toward scientific topics when reading in a second language
2021
Due to the participatory nature of Web 2.0, polite communication on social media and news sites can stand side by side with uncivil comments. Research on online incivility has been conducted with users reading in their mother tongues (L1), while the potential effects of incivility in a second language (L2) have been largely under- explored. This paper analyzes the effects of uncivil comments written in an L2 on attitudes around emerging technologies. Accordingly, study 1 replicates and extends a previous experiment on the effects of incivility to online news on risk perceptions of nanotechnology (Anderson et al., 2014), by adding an ‘L2 condition’ (uncivil comments written in an L2). Then, …
Sarcopenia and fall-related injury among older adults in five low- and middle-income countries
2021
Sarcopenia is a common condition in older people and increasing evidence suggests that it can be considered as a potential risk factor for falls and fractures. However, no studies on this topic from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are available. Thus, we assessed this association among older adults from five LMICs (China, India, Ghana, Mexico, and Russia). Community-based, nationally representative, cross-sectional data of the Study on Global Aging and Adult Health were analyzed. Sarcopenia was defined as the presence of low skeletal muscle mass based on indirect population formula, and either slow gait or low handgrip strength. The presence of fall-related injury was ascertained t…

Impact of the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic in Candidaemia, Invasive Aspergillosis and Antifungal Consumption in a Tertiary Hospital
2021
In addition to the increase in fungal infections that has been observed in the last few decades, it has been reported that severe clinical COVID-19 can increase the risk of invasive fungal infections. The main objective of this study was to evaluate if there had been an increase in candidaemia and invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) cases since the onset of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Data were retrospectively collected from April 2019 to March 2021, from patients admitted to Consorcio Hospital General Universitario de Valencia (Spain). A total of 152 candidaemia cases (56 of which were due to Candida auris) and 108 possible IPA cases were detected. A great increase in candidaemia cases was…
A potential solution to avoid overdose of mixed drugs in the event of Covid-19: Nanomedicine at the heart of the Covid-19 pandemic.
2021
Since 2020, the world is facing the first global pandemic of 21st century. Among all the solutions proposed to treat this new strain of coronavirus, named SARS-CoV-2, the vaccine seems a promising way but the delays are too long to be implemented quickly. In the emergency, a dual therapy has shown its effectiveness but has also provoked a set of debates around the dangerousness of a particular molecule, hydroxychloroquine. In particular, the doses to be delivered, according to the studies, were well beyond the acceptable doses to support the treatment without side effects. We propose here to use all the advantages of nanovectorization to address this question of concentration. Using quantum…
Regenerable ZnO/GaAs Bulk Acoustic Wave Biosensor for Detection of Escherichia coli in “Complex” Biological Medium
2021
A regenerable bulk acoustic wave (BAW) biosensor is developed for the rapid, label-free and selective detection of Escherichia coli in liquid media. The geometry of the biosensor consists of a GaAs membrane coated with a thin film of piezoelectric ZnO on its top surface. A pair of electrodes deposited on the ZnO film allows the generation of BAWs by lateral field excitation. The back surface of the membrane is functionalized with alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers and antibodies against E. coli. The antibody immobilization was investigated as a function of the concentration of antibody suspensions, their pH and incubation time, designed to optimize the immunocapture of bacteria. The perf…

Contactless generation of cavitation in high temperature liquid metals and its impact on particle dispersion in solidified iron and steel samples
2021
Abstract A recently developed method for the contactless magnetic generation of cavitation is demonstrated for high-melting-point metals. The approach is based on the floating-zone technique, which is truly contactless and crucible-free as it uses electromagnetic forces. Using this method, ultra-high-temperature ceramic particles, such as TiN, TiB2 and TiC, are admixed in liquid iron and 316L steel. The dispersion and particle refinement caused by cavitation treatment during melting and solidification are investigated. Magnetic fields up to 8 T that correspond to pressure oscillation amplitude of 0.83 MPa are used. The signal emitted by the collapsing bubbles is captured and visualized for …
Islander migrations and the oceans : From hopes to fears?
2021
This paper explores islanders’ hopes and fears for migration and non-migration, highlighting the role of the ocean. Migration, non-migration, hope, and fear are human conditions. To examine these conditions for islanders and oceans, this paper uses a qualitative evidence synthesis for collating and interpreting themes on the topic. Some types of hopes and fears, and a few reasons why they might emerge, are covered for islanders and ocean-related migration. Then, different ocean representations which islander migration and non-migration produces and portrays are presented. The conclusions question dichotomies and norms in the context of islander fears and hopes, as well as threats and opport…
Drenaggio toracico in Pronto Soccorso
2021
EntraPT: An online platform for elastic geothermobarometry
2021
Abstract EntraPT is a web-based application for elastic geobarometry freely accessible at the “Fiorenzo Mazzi” experimental mineralogy lab website (http://www.mineralogylab.com/software/). It provides an easy-to-use tool to calculate the entrapment conditions of inclusions, with error propagation, from the residual strain measured in mineral inclusions. EntraPT establishes a method and a workflow to import and analyze the measured residual strains, correctly calculates the mean stress in the inclusions, computes the entrapment isomekes with uncertainty estimation, and visualizes all the results in relevant graphs. It enables the user to avoid the many possible errors that can arise from man…
De novo genome assembly of the land snail Candidula unifasciata (Mollusca: Gastropoda)
2021
Abstract Among all molluscs, land snails are a scientifically and economically interesting group comprising edible species, alien species and agricultural pests. Yet, despite their high diversity, the number of genome drafts publicly available is still scarce. Here, we present the draft genome assembly of the land snail Candidula unifasciata, a widely distributed species along central Europe, belonging to the Geomitridae family, a highly diversified taxon in the Western-Palearctic region. We performed whole genome sequencing, assembly and annotation of an adult specimen based on PacBio and Oxford Nanopore long read sequences as well as Illumina data. A genome draft of about 1.29 Gb was gene…
Freshening of the Mediterranean Salt Giant: controversies and certainties around the terminal (Upper Gypsum and Lago-Mare) phases of the Messinian Sa…
2021
The late Miocene evolution of the Mediterranean Basin is characterized by major changes in connectivity, climate and tectonic activity resulting in unprecedented environmental and ecological disruptions. During the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC, 5.97-5.33 Ma) this culminated in most scenarios first in the precipitation of gypsum around the Mediterranean margins (Stage 1, 5.97-5.60 Ma) and subsequently > 2 km of halite on the basin floor, which formed the so-called Mediterranean Salt Giant (Stage 2, 5.60-5.55 Ma). The final MSC Stage 3, however, was characterized by a "low-salinity crisis", when a second calcium-sulfate unit (Upper Gypsum; substage 3.1, 5.55-5.42 Ma) showing (bio)geochemica…
Seasonal Human Coronavirus Respiratory Tract Infection in Recipients of Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
2021
Abstract Background Little is known about characteristics of seasonal human coronaviruses (HCoVs) (NL63, 229E, OC43, and HKU1) after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Methods This was a collaborative Spanish and European bone marrow transplantation retrospective multicenter study, which included allo-HSCT recipients (adults and children) with upper respiratory tract disease (URTD) and/or lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) caused by seasonal HCoV diagnosed through multiplex polymerase chain reaction assays from January 2012 to January 2019. Results We included 402 allo-HSCT recipients who developed 449 HCoV URTD/LRTD episodes. Median age of recipients was 46 years (range,…
Comprehensive dataset of shotgun metagenomes from oxygen stratified freshwater lakes and ponds
2021
Stratified lakes and ponds featuring steep oxygen gradients are significant net sources of greenhouse gases and hotspots in the carbon cycle. Despite their significant biogeochemical roles, the microbial communities, especially in the oxygen depleted compartments, are poorly known. Here, we present a comprehensive dataset including 267 shotgun metagenomes from 41 stratified lakes and ponds mainly located in the boreal and subarctic regions, but also including one tropical reservoir and one temperate lake. For most lakes and ponds, the data includes a vertical sample set spanning from the oxic surface to the anoxic bottom layer. The majority of the samples were collected during the open wate…
Stability and Change in Diffusion Model Parameters over Two Years
2021
In recent years, mathematical models of decision making, such as the diffusion model, have been endorsed in individual differences research. These models can disentangle different components of the decision process, like processing speed, speed–accuracy trade-offs, and duration of non-decisional processes. The diffusion model estimates individual parameters of cognitive process components, thus allowing the study of individual differences. These parameters are often assumed to show trait-like properties, that is, within-person stability across tasks and time. However, the assumption of temporal stability has so far been insufficiently investigated. With this work, we explore stability and c…
Variant Arterial Supply of the Descending Colon by the Coeliac Trunk: A Case Report
2021
Background and Objectives: Knowledge of arterial variations of the intestines is of great importance in visceral surgery and interventional radiology. Materials and Methods: An unusual variation in the blood supply of the descending colon was observed in a Caucasian female body donor. Results: In this case, the left colic artery that regularly derives from the inferior mesenteric artery supplying the descending colon was instead a branch of the common hepatic artery. Conclusions: Here, we describe the very rare case of an aberrant left colic artery arising from the common hepatic artery in a dissection study.

2021
Effective Degradation of Cigarette Butts via Treatment with Old Landfill Leachates
2021
In this paper, results of feasibility study on microplastics (MPs) assessment in leachates from the Latvian solid municipal landfill Getliņi are discussed. The application of leachates for the treatment of cigarette butts (CGB) was evaluated. Methods of fluorescent microscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and FTIR-microscopy were used for the identification and characterization of MPs in the leachates and analysis of CGB. Presence of the secondary MPs (e.g., degraded polyolefin mixtures) was determined in the tested landfill leachates, while cellulose acetate (CA) was not determined in these products. The leachates were tested as potential media for the thermophilic (55°C)…

Semiotica marcata: frammenti di un manifesto
2021
What drives brand love and purchase intentions toward the local food distribution system? A study of social media-based REKO (fair consumption) groups
2021
Local food is gaining increasing popularity among consumers due to its association with sustainable consumption. However, for a product to be commercially successful, such growing popularity should translate into high purchase intentions and positive associations with the product post-consumption. Although this success has not yet been reflected for local food consumption, research in this area has remained limited. The present study addresses this gap by examining the antecedents of brand love for both the local food distribution system and the local food it distributes. The study thus employs the stimuli-organism-response (SOR) theory, which indicates that certain environmental stimuli in…
High prevalence of oral potentially malignant disorders and risk factors in a semi-urban brazilian city: a population-based cross-sectional study
2021
Background Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders (OPMDs) are defined as lesions with a greater likelihood of progressing to cancer. Population-based studies that evaluate the prevalence of OPMDs are scarce in Brazil. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of OPMDs and associated risk factors in a semi-urban Brazilian population. Material and Methods This is a cross-sectional study, whose universe included individuals aged 40 years or older residing in a medium-sized city of northeastern Brazil. Data collection was divided into two steps: interview and oral examination. The outcome variable was the presence of OPMDs. The predictor variables were sociodemographic characte…
Analysis of plasticization and reprocessing effects on the segmental cooperativity of polylactide by dielectric thermal spectroscopy
2021
Abstract In the present study, the dielectric properties of both neat and plasticized polylactide submitted to repeated extrusion and injection processes to simulate recycling were analysed. The dielectric relaxation spectrum, consisting of β and α relaxation, revealed the relevance of both acryl-PEG based plasticization and thermo-mechanical degradation induced by repeated extrusion and grinding-injection reprocessing cycles on polylactide (PLA). The β-relaxation has its origin in the intramolecular local motions of pendant groups of the PLA backbone, while the α-relaxation is representative of the intermolecular large-scale segmental motions of the PLA backbone. The addition of acryl-PEG …
Scale dependence of species–area relationships is widespread but generally weak in Palaearctic grasslands
2021
Questions: Species–area relationships (SARs) are fundamental for understanding biodiversity patterns and are generally well described by a power law with a constant exponent z. However, z-values sometimes vary across spatial scales. We asked whether there is a general scale dependence of z-values at fine spatial grains and which potential drivers influence it. Location: Palaearctic biogeographic realm. Methods: We used 6,696 nested-plot series of vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens from the GrassPlot database with two or more grain sizes, ranging from 0.0001 m² to 1,024 m² and covering diverse open habitats. The plots were recorded with two widespread sampling approaches (rooted presenc…
