Heat and work fluxes in thermoelectric coolers
2021
Abstract Thermodynamics considers heat and work as the observables of energy. Then, in a non-equilibrium process, the fluxes of heat, work and energy are related. The expressions for the heat and energy flux densities are well known; although several conventions have been adopted. The work flux density defined from the heat and energy flux densities can be very useful in describing the energy balance when chosen to emphasize observable quantities. This paper discusses the advantages of the use of the conduction heat flux density given by Fourier’s law and a work flux density defined from it. As a case study, heat and work fluxes are evaluated in the elements of a thermoelectric cooler using…
Correspondences of Brauer characters and Sylow subgroup normalizers
2021
Abstract Let p > 3 and q ≠ p be primes, let G be a finite q-solvable group and let P ∈ Syl p ( G ) . Then G has a unique irreducible q-Brauer character of p ′ -degree lying over 1 P if and only if N G ( P ) / P is a q-group. One direction of this result follows from a natural McKay bijection of p ′ -degree irreducible q-Brauer characters, which is obtained under suitable conditions.
Cultura e Amministrazione nella transizione digitale
2021
The research concerns cultural heritage and, in its overall dimension, the evolution of culture, considered in the light of the very significant transformations in the contemporary global world, which in an unprecedented and expansive way affect its conceptual framework, also in terms of the relationship with the person, considered in the role of user and co-creator of the cultural value; and they also invest public duty which is entrusted with tasks of protection and promotion of both the development of the person and of culture. The analysis points out the overcoming of a markedly materialistic vision, the shift of attention from the conservative dynamics to the management profiles of cul…

Targeting BRAF and RAS in Colorectal Cancer
2021
Simple Summary In colorectal cancer, mutations of the KRAS and BRAF genes are quite common and can contribute to the activation of cell signaling pathways that lead to cell proliferation and differentiation. These processes promote cancer growth, and in some cases, they may cause cells to develop resistance to certain types of treatment, notably EGFR inhibitors. We summarize recent knowledge regarding the effects of KRAS and BRAF mutations in the setting of colorectal cancer and discuss the new therapies under development. Abstract Colorectal cancer (CRC) is still one of the most frequent forms of cancer in the world in terms of incidence. Around 40% of CRC patients carry a mutation of the …
Identification of 2-(thiophen-2-yl)acetic Acid-Based Lead Compound for mPGES-1 Inhibition.
2021
We report the implementation of our in silico/synthesis pipeline by targeting the glutathione-dependent enzyme mPGES-1, a valuable macromolecular target in both cancer therapy and inflammation therapy. Specifically, by using a virtual fragment screening approach of aromatic bromides, straightforwardly modifiable by the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction, we identified 3-phenylpropanoic acid and 2-(thiophen-2-yl)acetic acid to be suitable chemical platforms to develop tighter mPGES-1 inhibitors. Among these, compounds 1c and 2c showed selective inhibitory activity against mPGES-1 in the low micromolar range in accordance with molecular modeling calculations. Moreover, 1c and 2c exhibited interesting IC…
Functionalization of Metal and Carbon Nanoparticles with Potential in Cancer Theranostics
2021
Cancer theranostics is a new concept of medical approach that attempts to combine in a unique nanoplatform diagnosis, monitoring and therapy so as to provide eradication of a solid tumor in a non-invasive fashion. There are many available solutions to tackle cancer using theranostic agents such as photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) under the guidance of imaging techniques (e.g., magnetic resonance—MRI, photoacoustic—PA or computed tomography—CT imaging). Additionally, there are several potential theranostic nanoplatforms able to combine diagnosis and therapy at once, such as gold nanoparticles (GNPs), graphene oxide (GO), superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SP…
Refining the Baveno VI elastography criteria for the definition of compensated advanced chronic liver disease
2021
Background: The Baveno VI consensus proposed a dual liver stiffness (LS) by transient elastography threshold of <10 and >15 kPa for excluding and diagnosing compensated advanced chronic liver disease (cACLD) in the absence of other clinical signs. Herein, we aimed to validate these criteria in a real-world multicentre study. Methods: We included 5,648 patients (mean age 51 ± 13 years, 53% males) from 10 European liver centres who had a liver biopsy and LS measurement within 6 months. We included patients with chronic hepatitis C (n = 2,913, 52%), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD, n = 1,073, 19%), alcohol-related liver disease (ALD, n = 946, 17%) or chronic hepatitis B (n = 716…

Efficacy and pharmacological appropriateness of cinnarizine and dimenhydrinate in the treatment of vertigo and related symptoms
2021
Vertigo is not itself a disease, but rather a symptom of various syndromes and disorders that jeopardize balance function, which is essential for daily activities. It is an abnormal sensation of motion that usually occurs in the absence of motion, or when a motion is sensed inaccurately. Due to the complexity of the etiopathogenesis of vertigo, many pharmacological treatments have been tested for efficacy on vertigo. Among these drugs, cinnarizine, usually given together with dimenhydrinate, appears to be the first-line pharmacotherapy for the management of vertigo and inner ear disorders. Based on these considerations, the present non-interventional study aimed to investigate the clinical …
Asymétrie de la membrane plasmique végétale : caractérisation et rôle dans la signalisation immunitaire des plantes

Will the Economic Impact of COVID-19 Persist? Prognosis from 21st Century Pandemics
2021
COVID-19 has had a disruptive economic impact in 2020, but how long its impact will persist remains unclear. We offer a prognosis based on an analysis of the effects of five previous major epidemics in this century. We find that these pandemics led to significant and persistent reductions in disposable income, along with increases in unemployment, income inequality and public debt-to-GDP ratios. Energy use and CO2 emissions dropped, but mostly because of the persistent decline in the level of economic activity rather than structural changes in the energy sector. Applying our empirical estimates to project the impact of COVID-19, we foresee significant scarring in economic performance and in…

Biocontrol of Phelipanche ramosa, a parasitic weed of rapeseed in France, using soil-borne fungi
2021
National audience; Phelipanche ramosa is a major holoparasitic weed, which became a major agronomic problemfor rapeseed crops in France. Weed control in rapeseed does not have a direct impact on thisparasitic weed whose half of the reproductive cycle occurs on the root system of its host. Since1990, broomrape expanded its distribution area starting from the Poitou-Charentes region.Necrosis symptoms on broomrapes from this region should be indicators of potentialpathogenic fungi. Furthermore, these pathogenic fungi should be able to infest differentbroomrape stages. The aim of my thesis is to contribute to the evaluation of an integrated controlsolution for this parasitic weed and focus on t…

Promoting physical activity in people with haemophilia: the MEMO (Movement for persons with haEMOphilia) expert consensus project.
2021
: Regular physical activity can increase joint stability and function, reduce the risk of injury, and improve quality of life of people with haemophilia (PwH). However, a recent review of the literature shows that appropriate physical activity and sport are not always promoted enough in the overall management of PwH. A group of Italian experts in haemophilia care undertook a consensus procedure to provide practical guidance on when and how to recommend physical exercise programmes to PwH in clinical practice. Three main topics were identified -haemophilia and its impact on movement, physical activity recommendations for PwH, and choice and management of sports activity in PwH- and ten state…
BioVine project - Increase plant health through mycorrhizal fungi
2021
National audience; Organic vineyards still rely on large external inputs to control harmful organisms. BIOVINEwill develop natural solutions based on plant diversity to control pests and reduce pesticidedependence. The capacity of plants of increasing the ecosystem resistance to pests and invasivespecies is a well-known ecosystem service. However, monocultures like vineyards do notexploit the potential of plant diversity. BIOVINE aims to develop new viticultural systemsbased on increased plant diversity within (e.g. cover crops) and/or around vineyards by plantingselected plant species for the control of arthropods, soil-borne pests (oomycetes, fungi, nematodes), and foliar pathogens. Candid…
Electrocardiographic Imaging for Atrial Fibrillation: A Perspective From Computer Models and Animal Experiments to Clinical Value
2021
[EN] Electrocardiographic imaging (ECGI) is a technique to reconstruct non-invasively the electrical activity on the heart surface from body-surface potential recordings and geometric information of the torso and the heart. ECGI has shown scientific and clinical value when used to characterize and treat both atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. Regarding atrial fibrillation (AF), the characterization of the electrical propagation and the underlying substrate favoring AF is inherently more challenging than for ventricular arrhythmias, due to the progressive and heterogeneous nature of the disease and its manifestation, the small volume and wall thickness of the atria, and the relatively large…
Remarks on the Historiography of Mathematics
2021
In this paper, I examine aspects of the methodological debate that originated in 2010, when the distinguished historian of mathematics Sabetai Unguru reviewed Roshdi Rashed’s edition of the Arabic translation of Apollonius’ Conics. In his review, Unguru criticized what Rashed calls “l’usage instrumental d’une autre mathématique pour commenter une oeuvre ancienne”. I consider this debate very important and will try to place it within in the discussion of the so-called “geometric algebra” that goes back to the seventies, by tracing the contributions of the main figures who took part in it. The Role of Parliament in Sustainable Development Goals: A Case Study of Southeast Asia in International Parliamentary Forums
2021
Parliament has its role in supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). SDG number 16 on peace, justice, and strong institution states one indicator of a legislative institution (for “responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative”, that the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) commits to achieve. However, parliament must support the government in achieving all SDG programs as stated in Agenda 2030. What is the role of parliament in this and how to achieve it? This paper aims to show that the role of parliament in SDG is beyond the traditional legislative role of legislating, budgeting and overseeing the government, but more on representing people, meaning channeling people’s voice a…
