Students’ experiences and learning of social inclusion in team activities in physical education.

2021

Physical education (PE) can be a context in which students are ‘educated through the physical’, which includes the possibility to learn social inclusion as an important life skill and contributor to the greater good of society. A key goal in the Norwegian educational system is that such positive life skills become internalised in students. The aims of this study were to understand students’ experiences of and behaviour towards social inclusion – such as passing the ball – in team activities and how the teacher facilitated the learning of social inclusion. We use Dewey’s pedagogical perspective on education, and Johnson and Johnson’s cooperative learning model to discuss possible consequenc…

Boson stars in Palatini $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity

2021

We explore equilibrium solutions of spherically symmetric boson stars in the Palatini formulation of $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity. We account for the modifications introduced in the gravitational sector by using a recently established correspondence between modified gravity with scalar matter and general relativity with modified scalar matter. We focus on the quadratic theory $f(\mathcal{R})=R+\xi R^2$ and compare its solutions with those found in general relativity, exploring both positive and negative values of the coupling parameter $\xi$. As matter source, a complex, massive scalar field with and without self-interaction terms is considered. Our results show that the existence curves of bos…

Resting-state EEG reveals four subphenotypes of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

2021

Abstract Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a devastating disease characterized primarily by motor system degeneration, with clinical evidence of cognitive and behavioural change in up to 50% of cases. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is both clinically and biologically heterogeneous. Subgrouping is currently undertaken using clinical parameters, such as site of symptom onset (bulbar or spinal), burden of disease (based on the modified El Escorial Research Criteria) and genomics in those with familial disease. However, with the exception of genomics, these subcategories do not take into account underlying disease pathobiology, and are not fully predictive of disease course or prognosis. Recently…

Moringa oleifera supplemented foods in South Africa : A multidisciplinary approach combining consumer studies with physico-chemical and nutritional a…

2021

Malnutrition is a major challenge in South Africa (SA), particularly in Eastern Cape and Limpopo provinces, which are predominantly black and historically disadvantaged. This thesis aims to assess the potential of Moringa oleifera (MO) as a source of nutritional improvement in the diets of mothers and their children in these provinces. Known for its nutritional benefits, MO is a plant native to India, now cultivated in SA but not widely used for human nutrition. A two-part approach was followed in this thesis. The first part aims to understand how MO is perceived by consumers and how it can be integrated into the South African food repertory. A study of the knowledge, beliefs and consumptio…

Risk perception and knowledge of COVID-19 in patients with celiac disease

2021

BACKGROUND We recently demonstrated that the odds of contracting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in patients with celiac disease (CeD) is similar to that of the general population. However, how patients with CeD perceive their COVID-19 risk may differ from their actual risk. AIM To investigate risk perceptions of contracting COVID-19 in patients with CeD and determine the factors that may influence their perception. METHODS We distributed a survey throughout 10 countries between March and June 2020 and collected data on demographics, diet, COVID-19 testing, and risk perceptions of COVID-19 in patients with CeD. Participants were recruited through various celiac associations, clinic visi…

Effects of water removal on the structure and spin-crossover in an anilato-based compound

2021

The crucial role played by a crystallization water molecule in the spin crossover (SCO) temperature and its hysteresis is described and discussed in compound [NBu4][Fe(bpp)2][Cr(C6O4Br2)3]⋅2.5H2O (1), where bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine and (C6O4Br2)2− = dianion of the 3,6-dibromo-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone. The compound has isolated [Fe(bpp)2]2+ cations surrounded by chiral [Cr(C6O4Br2)3]3− anions, NBu4+ cations, and a water molecule H-bonded to one of the non-coordinated N–H groups of one bpp ligand. This complex shows a gradual almost complete two-step spin transition centered at ca. 180 and 100 K with no hysteresis. The loss of the water molecules results in a phase transition…

Topological two-dimensional Su–Schrieffer–Heeger analog acoustic networks: Total reflection at corners and corner induced modes

2021

In this work, we investigate some aspects of an acoustic analogue of the two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. The system is composed of alternating cross-section tubes connected in a square network, which in the limit of narrow tubes is described by a discrete model coinciding with the two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. This model is known to host topological edge waves, and we develop a scattering theory to analyze how these waves scatter on edge structure changes. We show that these edge waves undergo a perfect reflection when scattering on a corner, incidentally leading to a new way of constructing corner modes. It is shown that reflection is high for a broad class of edg…

ceRNA Network Regulation of TGF-β, WNT, FOXO, Hedgehog Pathways in the Pharynx of Ciona robusta

2021

The transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) family of cytokines performs a multifunctional signaling, which is integrated and coordinated in a signaling network that involves other pathways, such as Wintless, Forkhead box-O (FOXO) and Hedgehog and regulates pivotal functions related to cell fate in all tissues. In the hematopoietic system, TGF-β signaling controls a wide spectrum of biological processes, from immune system homeostasis to the quiescence and self-renewal of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). Recently an important role in post-transcription regulation has been attributed to two type of ncRNAs: microRNAs and pseudogenes. Ciona robusta, due to its philogenetic position close to verte…

Binocular function measures as predictors of user performance in stereoscopic augmented reality

2021

Inconsistency between the binocular and focus cues in stereoscopic augmented reality overburdens the visual system leading to its stress. However, a high individual variability of tolerance for visual stress makes it difficult to predict and generalize the user gain associated with the implementation of alternative visualization technologies. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the binocular function and perceptual judgments in augmented reality. We assessed the task completion time and accuracy of perceptual distance matching depending on the consistency of binocular and focus cues in the stereoscopic environment of augmented reality. The head-mounted display was driven…

Molecular Mobility in Oriented and Unoriented Membranes Based on Poly[2-(Aziridin-1-yl)ethanol]

2021

Unoriented and oriented membranes based on dendronized polymers and copolymers obtained by chemical modification of poly[2-(aziridin-1-yl) ethanol] (PAZE) with the dendron 3,4,5-tris[4-(n-dodecan-1-yloxy)benzyloxy]benzoate were considered. DSC, XRD, CP-MAS NMR and DETA, contribute to characterize the tendency to crystallize, the molecular mobility of the benzyloxy substituent, the dendritic liquid crystalline group and the clearing transition. The orientation of the mesogenic chain somewhat hindered this molecular motion, especially in the full substituted PAZE. The fragility, free volume and thermal expansion coefficients of these membranes near the glass transition are related to the orie…

Thermal- and photo-induced spin crossover in the 1D coordination polymer [Fe(4-tBupy)3][Au(CN)2]2 (4-tBupy = 4-tert-butylpyridine)

2021

Reaction of the unidentate pyridine ligand containing a bulky t-butyl substituent with Fe2+ and [Au(CN)2]− affords a new type of spin crossover (SCO) coordination polymer in the 1D compound [Fe(4-tBupy)3][Au(CN)2]2⋅0.5H2O (1), which is formed by chains of Fe(II) complexes linked through bridging [Au(CN)2]− with three terminal 4-tBupy and one monodentate [Au(CN)2]− ligands completing the octahedral coordination around Fe(II). Longer reaction times led to the minor products [Fe(4-tBupy)2][Au(CN)2]2 (2), which presents a 2D structure more similar to that found in the other SCO compounds based on [Au(CN)2]−, and the 1D compound [Fe(4-tBupy)2(MeOH)][Au(CN)2]2 (3), in which one of the three termi…

Improving prostate whole gland segmentation in t2-weighted MRI with synthetically generated data

2021

Whole gland (WG) segmentation of the prostate plays a crucial role in detection, staging and treatment planning of prostate cancer (PCa). Despite promise shown by deep learning (DL) methods, they rely on the availability of a considerable amount of annotated data. Augmentation techniques such as translation and rotation of images present an alternative to increase data availability. Nevertheless, the amount of information provided by the transformed data is limited due to the correlation between the generated data and the original. Based on the recent success of generative adversarial networks (GAN) in producing synthetic images for other domains as well as in the medical domain, we present…

2021

Members of the Torpedinidae (torpedoes) and Hypnidae (coffin ray) use electric organ discharges (EOD) to stun or kill their prey before consumption. We investigated whether EOD could also negatively affect the helminth larvae infecting these preys through a surrogate model: we applied electric discharges to individuals of blue whiting, Micromesistius poutassou, that harbored live larvae of Anisakis. Larval mortality throughout a 6-h period was significantly higher in the treatment group, suggesting that EODs could significantly hamper helminth recruitment. We then tested whether torpedinids and hypnids ("strong-EOD" families) harbored species-poor helminth (cestode) assemblages compared wit…

A cross-country study of skills and unemployment flows

2021

AbstractUsing an international survey that directly assesses the cognitive skills of the adult population, I study the relation between skills and unemployment flows across 37 countries. Depending on the specifically assessed domain, I document that skills have an unconditional correlation with the log-risk-ratio of exiting to entering unemployment of 0.65–0.68 across the advanced and skill-abundant countries in the sample. The relation is remarkably robust and it is unlikely to be due to reverse causality. I do not find evidence that this positive relation extends to the seven relatively less advanced and less skill-abundant countries in the sample: Peru, Ecuador, Indonesia, Mexico, Chile,…

This paper reviews the observations of the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Dyslexia (JLD). The JLD is a prospective family risk study in which the development of children with familial risk for dyslexia (N = 108) due to parental dyslexia and controls without dyslexia risk (N = 92) were followed from birth to adulthood. The JLD revealed that the likelihood of at-risk children performing poorly in reading and spelling tasks was fourfold compared to the controls. Auditory insensitivity of newborns observed during the first week of life using brain event-related potentials (ERPs) was shown to be the first precursor of dyslexia. ERPs measured at six months of age related to phoneme length identi…

Dynamic spin-triplet order induced by alternating electric fields in superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor Josephson junctions

2021

Dynamic states offer extended possibilities to control the properties of quantum matter. Recent efforts are focused on studying the ordered states which appear exclusively under the time-dependent drives. Here we demonstrate a class of systems which feature dynamic spin-triplet superconducting order stimulated by the alternating electric field. The effect is based on the interplay of ferromagnetism, interfacial spin-orbital coupling (SOC) and the condensate motion driven by the field, which converts hidden static p-wave order, produced by the joint action of the ferromagnetism and the SOC, into dynamical s-wave equal-spin triplet correlations. We demonstrate that the critical current of Jos…

Parametric Hull Design with Rational Bézier Curves and Estimation of Performances

2021

In this paper, a tool able to support the sailing yacht designer during the early stage of the design process has been developed. Cubic Rational Bézier curves have been selected to describe the main curves defining the hull of a sailing yacht. The adopted approach is based upon the definition of a set of parameters, say the length of waterline, the beam of the waterline, canoe body draft and some dimensionless coefficients according to the traditional way of the yacht designer. Some geometrical constraints imposed on the curves (e.g., continuity, endpoint angles, curvature) have been conceived aimed to avoid unreasonable shapes. These curves can be imported into any commercial Computer Aide…

Abstract Background Hoffa’s fat pad is a structure located within the fibrous joint capsule of the knee joint, but outside the synovial cavity. It plays an important biomechanical and metabolic role in knee joint, reducing the impact of forces generated by loading and producing cytokines. Changes in its size can induce modifications in the knee homeostasis. However, a great variability exists regarding its measurements. This work aims to evaluate the reliability of a measurement method of Hoffa’s fat pad dimensions through MRI. Methods 3T sagittal IW 2D TSE fat-suppressed MRI sequences, taken from the OAI (Osteoarthritis initiative) database, of 191 male and female patients, aged between 40…

A modified niche model for generating food webs with stage‐structured consumers: The stabilizing effects of life‐history stages on complex food webs

2021

Abstract Almost all organisms grow in size during their lifetime and switch diets, trophic positions, and interacting partners as they grow. Such ontogenetic development introduces life‐history stages and flows of biomass between the stages through growth and reproduction. However, current research on complex food webs rarely considers life‐history stages. The few previously proposed methods do not take full advantage of the existing food web structural models that can produce realistic food web topologies. We extended the niche model developed by Williams and Martinez (Nature, 2000, 404, 180–183) to generate food webs that included trophic species with a life‐history stage structure. Our me…

The Image Milnor Number And Excellent Unfoldings

2021

Abstract We show three basic properties of the image Milnor number µI(f) of a germ $f\colon(\mathbb{C}^{n},S)\rightarrow(\mathbb{C}^{n+1},0)$ with isolated instability. First, we show the conservation of the image Milnor number, from which one can deduce the upper semi-continuity and the topological invariance for families. Second, we prove the weak Mond’s conjecture, which states that µI(f) = 0 if and only if f is stable. Finally, we show a conjecture by Houston that any family $f_t\colon(\mathbb{C}^{n},S)\rightarrow(\mathbb{C}^{n+1},0)$ with $\mu_I(\,f_t)$ constant is excellent in Gaffney’s sense. For technical reasons, in the last two properties, we consider only the corank 1 case.

A note on some discrepancies in convolution models in X-ray spectral analysis

2021

Convolution models are powerful tools in many fields of spectral and image analysis owing to their wide applicability, and X-ray astrophysical spectral analysis is no exception. We found that relativistically broadened Fe K${\alpha}$ line profiles obtained through many convolution models both within and without Xspec show deviations from the profiles produced by their non-convolution counterparts. These discrepancies depend on the energy grid considered and on the shape of both the kernel and the underlying spectrum, but can reach as high as 10% of the flux in certain energy bins. We believe that this effect should be taken into consideration, considering how often these models are used to …

Varhaiskasvatuspalvelut koronapandemian aikana

2021
