To test whether carotenoids can modulate the initiation of liver preneoplasia by diethylnitrosamine (DEN) or by 2-nitropropane (2-NP) in a sequential protocol of hepatocarcinogenesis, male weanling rats were fed for three or four weeks (respectively) diets containing beta-carotene, canthaxanthin, astaxanthin, or lycopene (300 mg/kg diet) or an excess of vitamin A (15,000 retinol equivalents/kg diet) or were treated intraperitoneally with 3-methylcholanthrene. Melanoma primario sobre quiste epidermoide. Una rara asociación tumoral. Estudio clínico-patológico

Resumen Presentamos una observacion de un quiste epidermoide de localizacion frontal parasagital, en un paciente de 69 anos de edad con crisis comiciales de 40 anos de evolucion, ictus cerebrales. El paciente desarrollo sobre la pared del quiste una neoformacion maligna identificada morfologica e inmunohistoquimicamente con la HMb45, como un melanoma maligno. La falta de antecedentes, el estudio radiologico sistemico, conducen a considerar el diagnostico de melanoma maligno primario sobre un quiste epidermoide, siendo discutida la histogenie de esta posible asociacion.

We have recently demonstrated a remarkable selection of in vitro cultivated, TNP-specific polyclonal T cell lines for the expression of a TCR beta chain encoded by the V beta 8.2 gene. The goal of the present study was to analyse V alpha usage in V beta 8.2 T cells responsive to TNP, using TNP-specific T cell lines derived from three common strains of mice, as well as from V beta 8.2 transgenic mice. Results indicate that in vitro TNP stimulation of T cells from TNP-immune mice results in significant skewing of V alpha usage among responding V beta 8.2+ T cells, with overexpression observed for V alpha 3.2 and V alpha 8. A. J. Cavanilles estructura las Observaciones según criterio geográfico y de acuerdo con sus intereses botánicos. A pesar de todo su obra nos aporta muchas noticias sobre las divisiones territoriales valencianas de fines del siglo XVIII. Estas hacen referencia a las fronteras del reino y, sobretodo, a los términos municipales, pero en cambio no dice nada de las gobernaciones borbónicas. Se puede ver como el mapa municipal conserva algunas características del antiguo régimen, como la existencia de numerosos términos generales, la división territorial básica del País Valenciano hasta el siglo XIX, o bien la existencia de términos municipales en otros casos.

Functional polyanions were prepared by copolymerization of sulfopropyl acrylate and sulfopropyl methacrylate with monomers bearing triaminopyrimidine or barbituric acid functionalities, respectively. Functionalized polyelectrolyte multilayers were assembled from these copolymers by stepwise alternating adsorption with poly(choline methacrylate). These multilayers are suited for molecular recognition of substrates that are complementary to the functional groups incorporated. Blood Glutathione as an Index of Radiation-Induced Oxidative Stress in Mice and Humans

Abstract The effect of x-rays on GSH and GSSG levels in blood was studied in mice and humans. An HPLC method that we recently developed was applied to accurately determine GSSG levels in blood. The glutathione redox status (GSH/GSSG) decreases after irradiation. This effect is mainly due to an increase in GSSG levels. Mice received single fraction radiotherapy, at total doses of 1.0 to 7.0 Gy. Changes in GSSG in mouse blood can be detected 10 min after irradiation and last for 6 h within a range of 2.0–7.0 Gy. Nineteen papC-positive cytotoxic necrotizing factor 1 (CNF1)-producing Escherichia coli isolates from pigs with septicemia or diarrhea were tested for the presence of pap-, sfa-, and afa-related sequences encoding P/Prs, S/F1C, and Dr/AFA adhesins respectively. Production of adhesins by isolates was tested by mannose-resistant hemagglutination (MRHA), sialidase treatment of erythrocytes and particle agglutination tests. Production of P, S, and F1C fimbriae by isolates was also examined by immunofluorescence. All isolates were pap+ by PCR. Structural analysis of Drosophila subobscura gypsy elements (gypsyDs)

The study of gypsy elements in Drosophila subobscura (gypsyDs) indicated that they are transcriptionally active and mobile. From the comparative analysis of a complete gypsyDs element with the canonical gypsy sequence from D. melanogaster (gypsyDm) it can be deduced that while the whole structure is maintained, the gypsyDs ORF3 encodes a non-functional Env protein. The PCR amplification and sequencing of the ORF3 from different laboratory strains and H271 clones show that all gypsyDs sequences studied have frame-shifting mutations in this region. Application of the Wood model to lactation curves of Comisana sheep

Abstract Ninety-two ewes of the Comisana breed were used in a study to verify the forecasting capacity of the mathematical model proposed by Wood for fitting sheep data, and to evaluate the effect of the environmental factors affecting the parameters of the lactation curve. The Wood model underestimated the total lactation milk production with an error margin of 12.2 ± 7.8 kg of milk corresponding to 10.9 ± 6.6%. There was a strong influence of order of lambing × lambing season interaction on the lactation parameters. Les fouilles menées sur le sanctuaire de Fesques ont livré de très nombreux restes animaux. En fait l'essentiel des structures, qu'elles soient gauloises ou gallo-romaines, en ont livré, même si ce sont les fossés qui se sont révélés les plus riches. La plupart des échantillons témoignent de sélections particulières. L'ensemble est composé de 11264 restes, dont 613 indéterminés (soit 5,4 %), pour un poids total de plus de 166 kilos.
