Fracturas articulares de calcáneo: tratamiento incruento versus quirúrgico

1997

The treatment of intraarticular fractures of the calcaneus may ent…

A pre-processing technique based on the wavelet transform for linear autoassociators with applications to face recognition

1997

In order to improve the performance of a linear autoassociator (which is a neural network model), we explore the use of several preprocessing techniques. The gist of our approach is to store, in addition to the original pattern, one or several pre-processed (i.e. filtered) versions of the patterns to be stored in a neural network. First, we compare the performance of several pre-processing techniques (a plain vanilla version of the autoassociator as a control, a Sobel operator, a Canny-Deriche operator, and a multiscale Canny-Deriche operator) on an example of a pattern completion task using a noise degraded version of a face stored in an autoassociator. We found that the multiscale Canny-D…

Blood Flow and Oxygenation Status of Head and Neck Carcinomas

1997

Solid tumors contain a significant fraction of microregions which are chronically or transiently hypoxic. Experimental evidence is growing, showing that hypoxia may have a profound impact on malignant progression and on responsiveness to therapy [1–4].The clinical relevance of tumor oxygenation in human solid malignancies is under investigation (for a recent review see [5]). In this presentation, relevant clinical findings available to date on blood and oxygen supply of human head and neck carcinomas will be reviewed and emphasis will be given to the relevance of these factors in clinical oncology.

Changes in metabolism of inorganic polyphosphate in rat tissues and human cells during development and apoptosis

1997

Age-dependent studies show that the amount of inorganic polyphosphate in rat brain strongly increases after birth. Maximal levels were found in 12-months old animals. Thereafter, the concentration of total polyphosphate decreases to about 50%. This decrease in the concentration of total polyphosphate is due to a decrease in the amount of insoluble, long-chain polyphosphates. The amount of soluble, long-chain polyphosphates does not change significantly in the course of ageing. In rat embryos and newborns, mainly soluble polyphosphates could be detected. In rat liver, the age-dependent changes are less pronounced. The changes in polyphosphate level are accompanied by changes in exopolyphosph…

Chronic Intestinal Infection due to Subgenus F Type 40 Adenovirus in a Patient with AIDS

1997

A case of chronic intestinal infection due to adenovirus type 40 lasting for 13 months in a patient with AIDS is described. Adenovirus particles were detected by electron microscopy in biopsy samples taken from the duodenum 3 months after the onset of diarrhoea. The virus was identified as adenovirus type 40 in stool samples by ELISA monoclonal antibodies to adenovirus group antigen (MAd-g2) and types 40 and 41 (MA 40-1 and MA 41-1). No other enteropathogens were found. These data support a causal relationship between adenovirus 40 and the gastrointestinal symptoms of the patient. This is the first reported case of intestinal infection caused by adenovirus type 40 in a patient with AIDS.

Analysis of organic pollutants in water at trace levels using fully automated solid-phase extraction coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography

1997

A method has been developed for the determination of trace levels of 32 pesticides, 19 explosives and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in water in three individual steps. Solid-phase enrichment (SPE) is coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a fully automated system. The organic pollutants are enriched on reusable cartridges packed with adsorbent materials: pesticides and explosives on a mixed bed of divinylbenzene-ethylvinylbenzene copolymers (LiChrolut EN®) and perfluorinated polyethylene (PolyF®), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on C18-modified silica (Zorbax® ODS1). Thermally assisted desorption (TAD) has been shown to increase the recovery of analyt…

Pigment composition of PS II pigment protein complexes purified by anion exchange chromatography. identification of xanthophyll cycle pigment binding…

1997

Summary The pigment composition of the chlorophyll binding proteins of Photosystem II (PS II) of spinach ( Spinacea oleracea L.) has been determined using sucrose gradient ultracentrifugation, anion exchange chromatography and HPLC based pigment analysis. The xanthophyll cycle pigments violaxanthin, antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin were exclusively found in the proteins of the outer PS II antenna, with the highest amounts being present in the minor chlorophyll alb binding proteins CP 29 and CP 26. PS II core particles containing the reaction centre proteins D1, D2, cytochrome b 559 and the proteins of the inner antenna CP 47 and CP 43 bind β-carotene as the only carotenoid. The presence of the…

Magnetic Domain Imaging with a Photoemission Microscope

1997

ABSTRACTPhotoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM) has proven to be a versatile analytical technique in surface science. When operated with circularly polarized light in the soft x-ray regime, however, photoemission microscopy offers a unique combination of magnetic and chemical information. Exploiting the high brilliance and circular polarization available at a helical undulator beamline, the lateral resolution in the imaging of magnetic domain structures may be pushed well into the sub-micrometer range. Using a newly designed photoemission microscope we show that under these circumstances not only domains, but also domain walls can be selectively investigated. The high sensitivity of the te…

Preliminary experience with the application of Gadolinium-DTPA before MR imaging-guided laser-induced interstitial thermotherapy of brain tumors

1997

The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential value of i.v. gadolinium-diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid (Gd-DTPA) applied before MRI-guided laser-induced interstitial thermotherapy (LITT) of brain tumors without original enhancement, especially in defining total lesion size during therapy. MRI-guided LITT was performed on two patients with astrocytoma WHO II. For both patients, Gd-DTPA was administered intravenously after a first irradiation period and LITT was continued after pulling back the light guide to coagulate the upper parts of the tumor. In both patients, the whole irreversible damaged zone of the second irradiation period after Gd-DTPA showed an intense increase …

B-(B)over-bar mixing in the HQET

1997

We present a high statistics, quenched lattice calculation of the B-parameters B-Bd and B-Bs, computed at lowest order in the HQET. The results were obtained using a sample of 600 quenched gauge field configurations, generated by Monte Carlo simulation at beta = 6.0 on a 24(3) x 40 lattice. For the light quarks the SW-Clover action was used; the propagator of the lattice HQET was also tree-level improved. Our best estimate of the renormalization scale independent B-parameter is (B) over cap(Bd) = 1.08 +/- 0.06 +/- 0.08. (B) over cap(Bd) has been obtained by using ''boosted'' perturbation theory to calculate the renormalization constants which relate the matrix elements of the lattice operat…

DAISY: a distributed architecture for intelligent SYstem

1997

Distributed perceptual systems are endowed with different kind of sensors, from which information flows to suitable modules to perform useful elaborations for decisions making. In this paper a new distributed architecture, named 'Distributed Architecture for Intelligent SYstem' (DAISY), is proposed. It is based on the concept of co-operating behavioral agents supervised by a 'Central Engagement Module'. This module integrates the processing of data coming from the behavioral agents with a symbolic level of representation, by the introduction of a 'conceptual space' intermediate analogue representation. The DAISY project is under development; experiments on navigation and exploration for an …
