Role of para-linguistic organizers in dealing with electronic documents

1995

This thesis aims at studying the role of para-linguistic organizers used to design technical texts on screen. We are focusing on text setting devices, especially the parenthesis, the footnotes, the more explicit text type statements (such as «Example : » before a text part) and the pop-up windows. Methods of experimental psychology were used in order to analyse written texts and also to study the influence of para-linguistic organizers on the reading process (memorisation and information retrieval). The initial idea is that it is possible to analyse a technical text into units according to the writer's intention of communication (to emphasize or minimise the relative importance of a textual…

Coulomb Final State Interaction in Pion Interferometry for the Processes of High Multiplicity

1995

The corrections for two pion correlations due to electromagnetic final state interactions at high secondary multiplicities are investigated. It is shown that these result in a noticeable deviation from the standard Gamov factor. This conclusion changes drastically in a model of the pion system with expansion. The critical parameter which determines the size of these effects is found to be the ratio of the relative velocity of detected pions to the velocity of the pair center-of-mass (in the fireball rest frame). In particular, when this parameter is much less than unity the pion pair escapes the initial high density region promptly and the distortion of the mutual Coulomb potential is weak.

Latent Heat of Spontaneous-Curvature-Induced Lamellar-to-Microemulsion Transitions

1995

Using differential scanning microcalorimetry we examine the latent heat of the temperature-induced structural transition from a lamellar to a microemulsion phase in a H2O/n-octane/C12E5 (n-dodecyl pentanethyleneglycol ether) system. The associated latent heat increases strongly with surfactant concentration yielding heat changes up to 1kB T per surfactant molecule. These large values are quantitatively described by an interfacial model which takes into account the temperature dependence of the spontaneous curvature. The model explains our data points without considering contributions to the free energy by thermal fluctuations, entropy of mixing, undulations of the lamellae and renormalizati…

Higher-Order Differential Operators on a Lie Group and Quantization

1995

This talk is devoted mainly to the concept of higher-order polarization on a group, which is introduced in the framework of a Group Approach to Quantization, as a powerful tool to guarantee the irreducibility of quantizations and/or representations of Lie groups in those anomalous cases where the Kostant-Kirilov co-adjoint method or the Borel-Weyl-Bott representation algorithm do not succeed.

Integral-geometrical consideration of density matrices

1995

The ensemble N-representability problem for the k-th order reduced density matrix (k-RDM) as well as the problem of reconstruction of the N-particle system density matrices (N-DM) from a given k-RDM are studied. The spatial parts of the k-RDM expansion in terms of spin tensorial operators {Theta}{sub {lambda}} are represented using particular values (at specially chosen {Xi} = {Xi}{sub o}) of the Radon transform D{sub N{lambda}} D{sub N{lambda}}({Xi}) of the N-DM spatial parts (or their sums) D{sub N{lambda}}({chi}{prime}{vert_bar}{chi}{double_prime}) (here, {Xi} is a d-plane in the n-space {Re}{double_prime} of {chi} = ({chi}{prime}, {chi}{double_prime}), with n = 6N, d = 3(N - k), {chi}{p…

Review of studies of polymorphic blood systems in the Aymara indigenous population from Bolivia, Peru, and Chile.

1995

A review was made of all studies available from the literature referring to polymorphic blood systems of South American Aymara Indians. 33 original papers published up to 1990 covering a period of 45 years were summarized. Aymara samples were considered from a total of 55 localities in Bolivia, Peru, and Chile. Gene frequencies were tabulated for 21 polymorphic genetic systems comprising blood groups (AB0, MNSs, P, Rh, Lu, K, Le, Fy, Jk, Di), erythrocyte enzyme groups (AcP, 6PGD, PGM1, AK, ADA, EsD), and plasma protein groups (Hp, Tf, Gc, Gm, Km). Weighted average and range over all Aymara samples were computed for each blood system and compared with corresponding mean value and range in So…

On the SUSY Accompanied Neutrino Exchange Mechanism of Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

1995

The neutrinoless double beta decay ($\znbb$) induced by light Majorana neutrino exchange between decaying nucleons, accompanied by the squark exchange inside one nucleon, recently discussed by Babu and Mohapatra, is carefully analyzed both from the particle and nuclear physics sides. New nuclear matrix elements relevant to this mechanism are calculated. We extend the analysis to include mixing of light neutrinos with heavy and "sterile" neutrinos. It introduces another supersymmetric (SUSY) contribution to $\znbb$. We discuss constraints on the \rp MSSM parameters imposed by the current experimental limit on $\znbb$ decay half-life of $^{76}$Ge.

Clinical-anamnestic and instrumental data in outpatients suffering from venous disease

1995

The authors studied 200 consecutive outpatients with symptoms due to venous disease of the lower limbs. All the patients underwent anamnestic, clinical and instrumental evaluation (c.w. Doppler velocimetry and strain-gauge plethysmography). The results of this study showed that some anamnestic and clinical data are significantly related to venous disease detected by instrumental techniques. The superficial and deep vein hypertension were, instead, correlated to oral contraceptive use.

Industrial organization with profit rate maximizing firms

1995

We study the impact on industrial organization of the switching of objective function, from pure profit to profit rate maximization. The output level of firm is lower at optimum. This lead to a new conception of efficiency. Cases of no coordination are considered. In perfect competition, price signal disappears; factors remain paid at their marginal productivity, but modified. In imperfect competition, reaction functions may vanish even if collusion remains possible; limit of oligopoly remains perfect competition of profit rate; the paradox of Bertrand may remain; a new concept is studied: mixed duopoly, where firms can choose and change their objective.

Defects in glasses

1995

Abstract The absence of long range order in the glass structure allows to define only point defects in these materials. They are: 1) intrinsic defects—atomic size local deviation from short range order; 2) impurity defects—isolated impurity atoms or ions in the glass network; 3) intrinsic impurity defects—complexes consisting of the impurity atoms chemically bonded to one of the intrinsic defect atoms. The latter defects are characteristic for the doped glasses. Presence of point defects in glasses introduces new spectroscopic properties of these solid materials. Defect generation, interaction and recombination reactions resulting from the external influence causes the glass spectroscopic p…

Dynamic shakedown of structures under repeated seismic loads

1995

Elastic, perfectly plastic structures are considered under the action of repeated short-duration exitations of seismic type acting in an unknown time sequence, but belonging to a given polyhedral excitation domain. The basic excitations (vertices of the polyhedron) are chosen as discrete-spectrum waves each with frequencies coincident with the first natural frequencies of the structure, and amplitudes related to the ground features and earthquake intensity (according to the Kanai and Tajimi filter model) in such a way that every admissible excitation-obtained as a linear convex combination of the basic ones-has a maximum power not exceeding a given value. In the framework of unrestricted dy…

Congenitally corrected transposition of great vessels: MRI and echocardiographic appearance

1995

This paper presents the case of a 36-year-old male with congenitally corrected transposition of great vessels (CTGV). This is a rare cardiac anomaly characterized by atrioventricular and ventriculoarterial discordance, occuriing in less than 1% of all congenital heart diseases. This was diagnosed by echocardiography and MRI. The MRI findings demonstrated cardiac abnormality.

COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE ELECTROPHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF MONENSIN ON ATRIAL AND VENTRICULAR MUSCLE PREPARATIONS OF GUINEA-PIG HEART

1995

The effects of monensin (10 µmol/L) alone and in presence of verapamil (3 µmol/L) or ouabuin (1 µmol/L) or glibenclamide (10 µmol/L) or BaCl2 separately were studied on the electrophysiological properties represented by force of contraction, duration of action potential, and membrane resting potential of isolated atrial and ventricular muscle of guinea –pig heart. Monensin induced a transient increase in the force of contraction of atrial and ventricular muscles. It caused a decrease in action potential duration of papillary muscle, this effect was reversed by glibenclamide. Monensin increased the action potential duration of atrial muscle in absence or presence of glibenclamide. In presenc…

Behavioral Precursors to Accidents and Resulting Physical Impairment

1995

The main goal of the study was to determine, within a model of emotional and behavioral regulation, if there are developmental precursors to accidents and resulting physical impairment. Data collected at ages 8 and 14 with 147 males and 142 females using peer nomination and teacher rating were related to the number of types of accidents the subjects had been in and impairment as a result of an accident by the age of 27 when the subjects were interviewed on their health. The results showed that 44% of the men and 14% of the women had been in an accident. Severe effects on health were obtained for 19% of the men and 5% of the women. Accidents and impairment were most frequent among individual…

The12C(e, e'p)11B g.s reaction has been measured in parallel and anti-parallel kinematics over ap m range of −120<p m<120 MeV/c at a centralT p of 90 MeV. In contrast to previous measurements at NIKHEF, both kinematics can be described without enhancement of the transverse form factor of the bound proton (η=0.98(5)). Extra-pair paternity and male characteristics in the pied flycatcher

1995

The pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) is sexually dichromatic with extreme variation in male plumage coloration. The benefit for males of having black plumage is controversial, and few studies have found evidence for a sexual selection benefit of being black rather than brown. However, blacker males may be better able to achieve extra-pair fertilizations (EPFs), which may be an important component of sexual selection. We studied the role of EPFs in sexual selection in the pied flycatcher by establishing a set-up where two males with different back coloration (blacker vs browner) bred simultaneously near each other. DNA fingerprinting analysis revealed that 11% of offspring resulted from …

7-O-acetyl-GD3 in human T-lymphocytes is detected by a specific T-cell-activating monoclonal antibody.

1995

The monoclonal antibody U5, which is a potent inducer of proliferation in human T-cells, was found to bind to an alkali-sensitive derivative of ganglioside GD3. Using immunochemical and spectroscopic methods, the structure of the U5 antigen was determined as 7-O-acetyl-GD3. The antibody U5 did not react with 9-O-acetyl-GD3 and bound severalfold more stronger to 7-O-acetyl-GD3 than to GD3. U5 is the first antibody known to detect preferentially 7-O-acetyl-GD3. Flow cytometric analysis showed that each major class of human leukocytes contained a significant fraction of cells binding the U5 antibody.

Advanced Techniques of Micro-Analysis and Confocal Microscopy: Perspectives for Studying Chemical and Structural Changes at the Interface Between Res…

1995

Migration of trace amounts of elements and structural changes characterize the interface between immiscible substances. The contact zone among filling materials, saliva, and the cavity wall has the additional function of preventing the progress of leakage and subsequent caries. Difficulties in chemically and structurally analyzing the gradients of composition in an interface of microscopic dimensions characterize the experimental situation. The use of advanced techniques of instrumental micro-analysis and techniques of micro-visualization is our approach to the problem. With confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), effects of the components of the filling material on the structure of the…
