Growth of polyaniline films on porous silicon layers
1993
Abstract The electrochemical deposition of electrically active polyaniline films (PANI) onto the surface of porous silicon (PS) layers formed at p- and n-type silicon wafers has been studied using cyclic voltammetry measurements and infrared spectroscopy. The process of PANI deposition is easier on the PS layers formed at n-Si wafers and essentially retarded at PS/p-Si samples, presumably due to a parallel reaction of oxygen evolution. The polymerization reaction starts at the pore bottoms and propagates towards the external surface of the PS layer. Electric conduction of PS/PANI composites is lower than of uncovered PS layers.
Dialysis of flavour compounds: Yields of extraction on model solution
1993
The extraction of 58 flavour compounds by Nafion membrane dialysis was studied using a model solution. Reproducibility and yield of the method were investigated. The coefficient of variation of the extraction yield was less than 15% for 48 of the 58 compounds tested. When the number of carbon atoms increased, the extraction yield fell to zero for compounds with more than ten carbon atoms. Flavour compounds with a cyclic structure showed a better diffusion rate through the membrane than other compounds with the same number of carbon atoms. The extraction yield seems to be correlated mainly to the hydrophobicity of the molecule. The use of the method for quantitative analysis was studied. Ext…
Effect of electrical stimulation training on the contractile characteristics of the triceps surae muscle.
1993
This study aimed to assess the effects of training using electrical stimulation (ES) on the contractile characteristics of the triceps surae muscle. A selection of 12 subjects was divided into two groups (6 control, 6 experimental). The ES sessions were carried out using a stimulator. Flexible elastomer electrodes were used. The current used discharged pulses lasting 200 microseconds at 70 Hz. Contraction time was 5 s and rest time 15 s. The session lasted 10 min for each muscle. Training sessions were three times a week for 4 weeks. Biomechanical tests were performed using an isokinetic ergometer. Subjects performed plantar flexions of the ankle over a concentric range of movement at diffe…

Missing Records and Depositional Breaks in French Late Pleistocene Cave Sediments
1993
AbstractCave entrance and rock shelter infillings are positioned within the Pleistocene chronology for three areas of France (northern Alps, Franche-Comté, and Périgord). Despite minor local variations, it is possible to identify regional types with a consistent depositional record over long intervals of time. The interregional variability relates to the frequency and position of the gaps within the infillings. Sites in the northern Alps have not yielded any artifacts older than the Upper Paleolithic (Magdalenı́an), and dated sedimentary sequences do not go back beyond the Older Dryas. More complete sequences in Franche-Comté contain Mousterian industries. Two major gaps occur here, one las…
Self-diploidization in Saccharomyces cerevisiae kar2 heterokaryons
1993
Zygotes isolated by micromanipulation from crosses of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains, one of which carries a kar mutation, give rise most frequently to cytoductant colonies showing the nuclear constitution of either one of the two haploid parental strains. In crosses of kar2-1 strains to wild-type, about 10% of the cytoductants of both mating types are homozygous autodiploids. There is evidence indicating that self-diploidization occurs by fusion between sibling nuclei in the heterokaryotic zygote. Here we describe this phenomenon and propose to take advantage of it for the construction of genotypically-defined diploids able to mate, and of polyploid strains, which are useful tools in gen…

Two-dimensional dye crystals with controllable optical properties
1993
The structure, molecular ordering and optical properties of single crystals of cyanine dyes grown by adsorption from a water subphase to a positively charged lipid monolayer are discussed. These crystals are one monolayer thick, of uniform dimensions between 10 and 100μm (depending on nucleation conditions) and of rectangular shape. Single crystals were studied by transmission electron diffraction and by polarized absorption and emission spectroscopy. We show that the crystals consist of two rows of densely stacked molecules with two different orientations of the long molecular axes. This leads to two perpendicularly polarized absorption bands. The measured splitting is in accordance with r…

Langmuir-Blodgett films from a polymer with triphenylene moieties in the side groups deposited on a quartz substratum with aluminium and gold electrodes show a dark conductivity in the plane of the Langmuir-Blodgett film. This dark conductivity is increased using gold electrodes as compared with aluminium electrodes. It depends in a superlinear way upon the applied electric field and is not enhanced by oxygen. The dark conductivity can be enhanced by doping the Langmuir-Blodgett films with iodine but it is not influenced by doping the Langmuir-Blodgett films with 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone. Upon excitation in the absorption band of the triphenylene moiety an in-plane photocurrent, which is…

Complete functional C1q deficiency associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
1993
SUMMARY A complete functional deficiency of Clq is described in a patient suffering from SLE. From reduced plasma C1 activity of the parents a hereditary trait was assumed. The defective C1q molecule was haemolytically inactive, did not bind to immune complexes, and was not recognized by the monocyte C1q receptor. C1 activity in the patient's serum could be restored by the addition of purified C1q. Analysis by gelfiltration and ultracentrifugation experiments revealed an immunoreactive molecule of about 150 kD mol. wt, corresponding to one structural subunit of the C1q macromolccule, containing two A chain-B chain dimers and a C-C chain dimer. Applying Southern blot analysis with cDNA clone…

Recent work confirms that visual assessment of the effect of widely employed coronary interventions is highly inaccurate. Rapid and reliable on-line angiographic quantitation is a useful advance, but problems in the application of the technique are encountered in a substantial number of cases. New algorithms have been devised to provide a comprehensive assessment of the geometry and likely functional significance of lesions as well as an objective evaluation of lesion morphology, and recent work has provided the framework for the quantitation of diffuse disease. Studies with intravascular ultrasound confirm the inadequate sensitivity of angiography in demonstrating mild to moderate atheroma…
Die konnatale duodenalobstruktion
1993

The crystal and molecular structure of 1 has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. It crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group P 1 with cell constants a=15.584(4), b=12.039(3), c=9.470(2) A, α=113.83(2), β=107.17(3), γ=84.28(3)°; V=1552(1) A3, D (calc., Z=2…
Evolution of the electronic properties of graded poly(thienylene vinylene)-poly(pyrrylene vinylene) mixed copolymers
1993
Abstract We present a valence effective Hamiltonian (VEH) theoretical investigation of the evolution of the electronic properties of poly(thienylene vinylene)-poly(pyrrylene vinylene) mixed copolymers as a function of the unit cell content on the basis of ab initio 3–21G∗ and 3–21G optimized geometries. As a consequence of the strong localization of the LUCO both electron affinity and bandgap deviate from a linear dependence, and only the ionization potential presents the expected values.
Psychotropic Drugs in the Management of Chronic Pain Syndromes
1993
Psychotropic drugs have been integrated into the management of chronic pain syndromes for more than 30 years. Numerous open and controlled studies have taken place evaluating especially the antinociceptive efficacy of antidepressive drugs. This survey comprises the results of clinical reports, open clinical studies, placebo-controlled studies, and comparative studies of different substances. It will be shown that antidepressants are by far the best evaluated psychopharmacological substances, showing superiority against placebo in 70% of a total of 67 placebo-controlled studies. The synopsis of controlled comparison studies of different antidepressants tends to demonstrate a superiority of c…
Method for determining the proper expansion center and order for Mellin radial harmonic filters
1993
Abstract A method to improve the behaviour of the Mellin radial harmonic (MRH) filters in scale invariant pattern recognition is presented. An algorithm has been introduced to obtain the proper expansion center and order of the MRH development of any object. The procedure consists of the suspression of the non-discriminant uniform background in the energy function of the target. Computer simulations are presented.

Extractive-spectrophotometric determination of amphetamine in urine samples with sodium 1,2-naphthoquinone 4-sulphonate
1993
Abstract Sodium 1,2-naphthoquinone 4-sulphonate (NQS) was tested as a reagent for amphetamine in order to develop an extractive-spectrophotometric method for the drug in urine samples. The standard additions method showed the absence of proportional bias error whereas the Youden method and the two standard addition plots method showed the presence of a constant bias error [total Youden blank (TYB)]. Acceptable results were obtained by evaluating the TYB error or by using a placebo (urine sample from a normal subject). The dynamic range of concentrations was 1.4–50 mg 1−1 in urine samples and the detection limit was 0.6 mg 1−1 when 10 ml of urine sample were taken.
Influence of surface chemistry on the structural organization of monomolecular protein layers adsorbed to functionalized aqueous interfaces.
1993
The molecular organization of streptavidin (SA) bound to aqueous surface monolayers of biotin-functionalized lipids and binary lipid mixtures has been investigated with neutron reflectivity and electron and fluorescence microscopy. The substitution of deuterons (2H) for protons (1H), both in subphase water molecules and in the alkyl chains of the lipid surface monolayer, was utilized to determine the interface structure on the molecular length scale. In all cases studied, the protein forms monomolecular layers underneath the interface with thickness values of approximately 40 A. A systematic dependence of the structural properties of such self-assembled SA monolayers on the surface chemistr…
Das Werk der inneren Uhr Zur Neuroanatomie des circadiauen Systems der Suger
1993
Many aspects of mammalian life exhibit distinct alterations throughout the 24-h cycle. Morphological, physiological, and biochemical parameters display circadian rhythms which are thought to be generated by an endogenous pacemaker and regulated by environmental factors. The morphological substrates of the endogenous circadian system have been studied extensively during the last two decades. Although knowledge is far from complete, there is general agreement that the pathways involved consist mainly of retina, hypothalamus, spinal cord, sympathetic trunk, and pineal gland. This review characterizes the anatomical structures and tracts responsible for generation and maintenance of circadian r…
Dielectric properties of solutions of antimony (III) halides in methanol
1993
The complex permittivities obtained by time domain reflectometry (TDR) measurements in the frequency range 0.1–15 GHz are reported for solutions of SbF3, SbCl3 and SbBr3 in methanol at 25°C. By increasing the concentration of the solutes, a marked increase of the main relaxation time and of the static permittivity of methanol is observed. These effects have been attributed to the ability of antimony (III) halides to strengthen the hydrogen bonding in methanol and to promote the shift of the dynamic equilibria among the various populations of hydrogen bonded methanol aggregates toward those characterized by a parallel orientation of neighboring dipoles. A second relaxation, occurring at low …
Structure of doped polyaniline - dielectric spectroscopy measurements
1993
The role of doping reagents (residual water and acid anions) in determining the electric properties of a chemically synthesized polyaniline (PANI) was studied using a dielectric spectroscopy method. Dependencies of dielectric losses and susceptibility of PANI as the functions of temperature (-100÷+100°C) and electric field frequency (0.3÷30000 Hz) were examined at it was shown the role of water acts as a doping impurity similar to acid anions. The model is proposed to explain the role of water in terms of adsorption of H 2 O molecules at nitrogen sites of PANI chain and their dissociation
Development of the H-point standard additions method for analyte determinations in unknown matrix
1993
Abstract The development of the H-point standard additions method is proposed in order to obtain the unbiased analyte concentration when the matrix of the sample is completely unknown. A spectral region where the interferent behaviour can be considered linear at three wavelengths must be chosen. The method uses the analytical signal data at these three wavelengths, usually situated in the maxima region of the analyte. Two procedures are proposed in order to know and to locate this behaviour for the unknown interferent. Several binary and ternary mixtures of phenol, 4-chlorophenol and 4-chloro-3-methylphenol as representative examples have been assayed, with accurate (less than 3% relative e…
Dissolution and precipitation of gypsum and carbonate minerals in soils on evaporite deposits, central Sicily: isotope geochemistry and microfabric a…
1993
Abstract Soil profiles developed from carbonate- and sulphate-rich deposits of the Gessoso-Solfifera Formation (Miocene) were sampled in central Sicily (544 mm annual precipitation and a strongly seasonal rainfall regime). Carbon and oxygen isotope data supported by mineralogical and thin section investigations indicate that meteoric waters and groundwaters dissolve and repricipitate carbonates and gypsum in the soil profiles. The boundary between the C horizon and the overlying one is the formation site of 18O depleted carbonates (calcite and/or dolomite) presumably precipitated from percolating waters during wet periods. Greater δ18O values of carbonates in the shallower horizons suggest …
Quantitative determination of sotolon in wines by high-performance liquid chromatography
1993
Sotolon (4,5-dimethyl-3-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone) is a key flavour compound in the french flor-sherry “Vin jaune”. This compound was determined quantitatively by extraction of 25 ml of wine on a XAD-4 resin, elution with diethyl ether, separation by HPLC on a Lichrospher 100 Diol column, elution with dichloromethane/hexane (60/40) and UV detection at 232 nm. The amount of sotolon in “Vin jaune” (120 to 268 μg/l) was related to the development of the yeast film over a period of 6 years. Only 6 to 51 μg/l were found in the “Vin de paille” which is made with overmaturated grapes of the same Savagnin vine-plant but without development of yeasts, and 80 to 140 μg/l in “Tokai” which are partly grow…
Development of hydroxysteroid sulfotransferase-deficient lesions during hepatocarcinogenesis in rats
1993
Rat liver cytosolic hydroxysteroid sulfotransferases form highly reactive sulfuric acid esters from some benzylic alcohols, such as 1-hydroxymethylpyrene. In this study we examined the expression of hydroxysteroid sulfotransferase a (STa) in carcinogen-induced enzyme-altered, presumably preneoplastic, rat liver foci. Female Wistar rats were given a single i.p. injection of diethylnitrosamine (0.15 mumol/g body wt) 1 day after birth to induce the liver foci. After weaning, rats were given 1-hydroxymethylpyrene or phenobarbital continuously in their diet (250 or 500 p.p.m. respectively) for a total of 120 days. Carcinogen-induced liver foci were identified by a change in the marker enzyme ade…
Magnetic alignment of aliphatic lamellae
1993
Abstract Magnetic alignment of mesophases is normally only considered possible when the molecule contains an aromatic ring system. In this paper we report on the mesomorphous behaviour of a polyalkylacrylate resin with average sidechain length 22 and the alignment of its lamellae in cast films by annealing in a strong magnetic field.

Variations in acoustical beam properties of intracoronary Doppler catheters.
1993
The limitations of coronary angiography in assessing the functional significance of coronary obstructions is well known. While the critical variable of coronary blood flow cannot be readily measured, intraluminal Doppler sonography offers useful related functional information on blood flow velocity. In order to fully evaluate Doppler signals it is essential to have exact knowledge of the transducer transmission characteristics and of the ultrasound beam topology. In an experimental set-up, the transmitter-receiver characteristics of five commonly used Doppler catheters were investigated. In comparing the beam characteristics we found inhomogeneities in the lateral beam spread. At a penetrat…
Distribution and kinetics of superantigen-induced cytokine gene expression in mouse spleen.
1993
The polyclonal stimulation of T cells by bacterial superantigens is involved in the pathogenesis of the toxic shock syndrome in certain staphylococcal and streptococcal infections. Here we describe the onset and kinetics of superantigen-induced cytokine production in situ in spleens of normal BALB/c mice monitored at the level of cytokine mRNA expression by in situ hybridization. Messenger RNAs for interleukin 2 (IL-2), interferon gamma, and tumor necrosis factors (TNF) alpha and beta were not expressed at detectable levels in spleens of unstimulated animals but became visible already 30 min after intraperitoneal application of 50 micrograms staphylococcal enterotoxin B. All mRNA levels sho…
Major histocompatibility complex regulation of interleukin-5 production in the mouse.
1993
Lymph node cells of CBA (H-2k), but not of BALB/c (H-2d) mice immunized epicutaneously with picryl chloryde secrete interleukin (IL)-5 when stimulated with the specific antigen in vitro. The low IL-5 production in BALB/c mice persists when either picryl chloride or the unrelated antigen oxazolone are used, when the amount of antigen in vitro is varied and when a secondary response is studied. The difference in IL-5 production maps to the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in the congenic BALB/b, BALB/c and BALB/k mice. Furthermore, lymph node cells from (k × d) F1 mice produce IL-5 when stimulated by antigen presented on H-2k but not on H-2d antigen-presenting cells. Finally, the low IL…
Heat Shock Protein Vaccines Against Cancer
1993
Vaccination of mice with heat shock proteins (HSPs) derived from a tumor makes the mice resistant to the tumor from which the HSP was obtained. This phenomenon has been demonstrated with three HSPs--gp96, hsp90, and hsp70. Vaccination with HSPs also elicits antigen-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs). The specific immunogenicity of HSPs derives apparently, not from the HSPs per se, but from the peptides bound to them. These observations provide the basis for a new generation of vaccines against cancer. The HSP-based cancer vaccines circumvent two of the most intractable hurdles to cancer immunotherapy. One of them is the possibility that human cancers, like cancers of experimental anima…
