Analysis of antigens recognized on human melanoma cells by A2-restricted cytolytic t lymphocytes (CTL)

We have pursued our analysis of potential tumor-rejection antigens recognized on human melanoma by autologous cytolytic T lymphocytes (CTL). We reported previously that 3 distinct antigens (A,B,C) were recognized on melanoma cell line SK29-MEL in association with HLA-A2. Selection for melanoma-cell variants resistant to anti-A CTL revealed that antigen A consists of at least 2 determinants (Aa, Ab) which can be lost separately. Genetic linkage between Aa and Ab was suggested by concomitant loss of Aa and Ab in an immunoselected tumor-cell variant. It is widely accepted that collagenolytic enzymes are required to facilitate the invasion and spread of tumour cells into host tissues. Immunohistochemical, zymographic and PCR analyses have produced evidence that the recently established human mammary carcinoma cell line, 8701-BC, expresses several metalloproteinases (MMP-1, -2, -9 and -10) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMP-1 and -2). Renal-cell carcinomas (RCC) are clinically, histologically and cytogenetically very heterogeneous. The present histological WHO classification shows no clear correlation between histologic subtypes and specific chromosomal abnormalities. In 1986, a new classification was proposed by Thoenes and Storkel based on the cell type from which the tumor arises. They distinguish S cell types: clear-cell, chromophilic, chromophobic, ductus Bellini and oncocytic. Results of 105 primary tumors show that, in this new classification, there is a correlation between different subtypes of renal-cell tumor and specific chromosomal abnormalities at a microscopic and/or molecular level. Onset of nuclear vaporization inAu197+197Au collisions

Multifragmentation has been measured for [sup 197]Au+[sup 197]Au collisions at [ital E]/[ital A]=100, 250, and 400 MeV. The mean fragment multiplicity increases monotonically with the charged particle multiplicity at [ital E]/[ital A]=100 MeV, but decreases for central collisions with incident energy, consistent with the onset of nuclear vaporization. Molecular dynamics calculations follow some trends but underpredict the observed fragment multiplicities. Including the statistical decay of excited residues improves the agreement for peripheral collisions but worsens it for central collisions.
Cooperative formation of inorganic-organic interfaces in the synthesis of silicate mesostructures.

A model is presented to explain the formation and morphologies of surfactant-silicate mesostructures. Three processes are identified: multidentate binding of silicate oligomers to the cationic surfactant, preferential silicate polymerization in the interface region, and charge density matching between the surfactant and the silicate. The model explains present experimental data, including the transformation between lamellar and hexagonal mesophases, and provides a guide for predicting conditions that favor the formation of lamellar, hexagonal, or cubic mesostructures. An analysis of γγ interactions has been performed using untagged hadronic data obtained by the ALEPH detector at LEP. The data show at low transverse momentum (pt) are well reproduced by a model based on the vector meson dominance mechinism (VDM). At high pt thrust the presence of hard scattering processes is demonstrated. This component is well described in shape and normalization by a QCD calculation.

It remained to be proved that (1) La silicate hydrate could form at pH 8, and (2) Ca silicate hydrate could not precipitate simultaneously. Cats were conditioned to turn their heads using a tone conditioned stimulus (CS) and medial forebrain bundle stimulation (MFB) unconditioned stimulus (US). The CS+ was delivered to one ear at a time, in random order, followed by the US. A tone of a different frequency was used as a CS-. The cats learned to respond differentially to the CSs showing head movements of greater acceleration to the CS+ than CS- over sessions. Homocystinuria due to homozygous cystathionine beta-synthase deficiency is an inborn error of metabolism characterized by a high incidence of thrombosis and premature atherosclerosis. We evaluated TXA2 biosynthesis in vivo and several in vitro tests of platelet function in 11 homocystinuric patients and 12 healthy controls. In vitro, patients' platelet aggregation was within control values as were TXB2 formation, fibrinogen binding, and ATP secretion in response to thrombin. We study by means of Monte Carlo simulations and the numerical transfer matrix technique the critical behavior of the short rangep=3 state Potts glass model in dimensionsd=2,3,4 with both Gaussian and bimodal (±J) nearest neighbor interactions on hypercubic lattices employing finite size scaling ideas. Abstract Different preparation methods have been used to obtain starting powders used in the fabrication of composite tapes by the powder-in-tube method. The effect of these distinct starting powders on the superconducting properties of Ag/Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O monofilament tapes has been investigated. The changes in the physical properties, including the critical current density at 77 K and ac magnetic susceptibility, and microstructure, using optical and electronic microscopy, have been analyzed in relation to the solid state reactions involved in the Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ and Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 10+δ phase transformations.

The synthesis and spectral characterization of the [Cu(Hstz)2(MeOH)Cl2] complex are described. Both polycrystalline powder EPR and single crystal EPR spectra recorded at room temperature show rhombic distortion with values of g1=2.25, g2=2.09 and g3=2.03 in agreement with a copper polyhedron, intermediate between trigonal bipyramid and square pyramidal.

Non-Bloch decay of transient nutations in S=1/2 systems: An experimental investigation.

The decay of transient nutations has been experimentally investigated in S=1/2 spin systems at microwave frequency: E' centers in silica and [${\mathrm{AlO}}_{4}$${]}^{0}$ centers in quartz have been studied. We have found that the damping is well described by a single exponential decay function, as expected from a ${\mathit{T}}_{1}$-${\mathit{T}}_{2}$ model (Bloch model). However, the agreement is only qualitative. In fact the measured decay rate \ensuremath{\Gamma} is faster than expected and depends on the driving-field amplitude: it tends to the Bloch value ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{\mathit{B}}$=1/2${\mathit{T}}_{2}$ in the low-power limit and becomes faster and faster on increas…
Flow-injection spectrophotometric determination of amino acids based on an immobilised copper(II) -zincon system

Abstract The flow-injection spectrophotometric determination of different amino acids was carried out by reaction with copper(II) ions entrapped in a polymeric material and filling a packed-bed reactor; the released copper(II), complexed with the amino acid, reacted with zincon in a basic medium producing a blue colour that was monitored at 600 nm. The method was applied to determine the contents of different amino acids in pharmaceutical formulations. The calibration graph for glycine was linear over the range 0.5–20 μg ml −1 with a relative standard deviation of 0.8% ( n = 6) at 10 μg ml −1 and a sample throughput of 108 h −1 .
Relationship between microscopic and macroscopic structures of organic thin films for SHG

The experiments described in this paper were undertaken in order to obtain information about the relationship between the structure and non-linear optical properties (second-harmonic generation) of organic thin films. For this purpose, two closely related dyes, diones and tetrones, were compared, both of which are shown to have large hyperpolarisabilities. Their microscopic properties are investigated by conformational analysis and electron diffraction. It could be shown that detailed knowledge about the structure and the adjacent neighbour packing can be obtained from conformational analysis and electron diffraction in order to understand the non-linear optical properties of the two dyes.

Summary Effects of gibberellic acid on morphogenesis and cardenolide accumulation in in vitro cultures of Digitalis obscura are reported. Cultures were established from hypocotyls or leaves of axenic seedlings and shoot tips of mature plants. Irrespective of the kind of explant, gibberellic acid by itself did not induce morphogenesis but modified those morphogenic responses promoted by auxins and/or cytokinins, always inhibited organogenesis and favoured both embryo formation and conversion into plants. Gibberellic acid did not significantly affect cardenolide content of plants regenerated from juvenile or mature D. obscura explants.

Metastatic spinal cord compression--options for surgical treatment.

Fourty-three cases with metastatic spinal cord compression were reviewed post-operatively to clarify the usefulness of the procedures concerning restoration of neurological function, and pain relief. Only patients with pathological spinal instability and neurological sequelae were included. Posterior decompression and stabilization was performed in all but six patients. All but four patients (91%) reported decrease of pain symptoms. Amelioration of neurological function was achieved in 58%. Re-establishment of walking ability was obtained in 57%. In a sample of 171 healthy volunteers, the present study examined the relationships between questionnaire measures of trait anxiety, punishment sensitivity, and impulsivity with the measures from the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). This was undertaken in order to explore the relative location of the personality dimensions central to the ideas of Gray and Eysenck. Heavy quark symmetry at large recoil: the case of baryons

We analyze the large recoil behaviour of heavy baryon transition form factors in semileptonic decays. We use a generalized Brodsky-Lepage hard scattering formalism where diquarks are considered as quasi-elementary constituents of baryons. In the limit of infinitely heavy quark masses the large recoil form factors exhibit a new model-independent heavy quark symmetry which is reminiscent but not identical to the Isgur-Wise symmetry at low recoil.

Abstract Although the usefulness of solution procedures to improve the synthesis of bismuth HTSC has been argued, an adequate control of the procedural variables has allowed us to isolate the 110 K phase as the only superconducting phase after such a short sintering time as 22 h. The precursors used have been freeze-dried powders resulting from acetic solutions containing excess Ca and Cu. TGA-DTA and XRD experiments have been performed to follow the subsequent solid-state reaction processes. The intensity of the light collected by the fibertip, at λ = 1.3 λm , which is a function of the separation between the tip and the sample surface is in agreement with that predicted by the theory.
