Luminescence of a self-trapped exciton in GeO2 crystal

1993

Abstract The self-trapped exciton (STE) is discovered in the GeO2 crystal. A PL band at 2.5 eV with a strong Stokes shift is excited only in the fundamental absorption range of GeO2 crystal with the quantum yield about 0.4 and the decay time constant 800 ± 5 μs at 80 K. The PL thermal quenching occurs at 200 K with the energy about 0.25 eV and the frequency factor 107. At 4.5 K the PL decay kinetics splits into two components with time constants 270 μs and 8000 μs, which can be due to a triplet state split in the zero magnetic field. The STE in GeO2 is very similar to a STE in SiO2.

The reflection coefficient of a flared microstrip line radiating in an infinite parallel-plate waveguide

1993

In this article the reflection coefficient of a tapered microstrip line radiating in an infinite parallel-plate conducting waveguide is calculated. The reflection coefficient at the feed line is evaluated by using the aperture admittance of the horn and the scattering matrix of the continuous taper. The theoretical behavior of the aperture admittance is shown and the reflection coefficient of a microstrip horn radiating in the parallel-plate region of a bootlace lens is measured in order to verify the model. © 1993 John Wiley & sons, Inc.

Identification of a clone of Escherichia coli O103:H2 as a potential agent of hemolytic-uremic syndrome in France

1993

In a French multicenter study, six verocytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli strains were isolated from the stools of 6 of 69 children suffering from hemolytic-uremic syndrome. All strains belonged to serotype O103:H2, a serotype commonly associated with diarrhea in weaned rabbits in France. To determine whether the strains from humans and rabbits were genetically related, they were compared by analyzing their esterase electropherotypes and the restriction fragment length polymorphisms of the ribosomal DNA regions. A common clonal origin of these pathogenic strains was suggested by their identical esterase electropherotypes and their identical ribotypes, in addition to their identical seroty…

Immunonephelometric determination of the C4b-binding protein.

1993

A fully mechanised immunonephelometric method for the rapid and specific determination of C4b-binding protein (C4b-BP) in citrated plasma is described. The method utilizes commercially available rabbit antiserum against human C4b-BP and a nephelometer analyser. A single determination can be performed within 6 min, requiring 80 microliters sample volume. The measuring range is about 10 to 200% of normal C4b-BP. Precision is characterized by intraassay coefficients of variation between 1.5% and 2.8%, and interassay coefficients of variation between 4.0% and 4.6% for the same C4b-BP concentrations. The nephelometry of C4b-BP was correlated with electroimmunodiffusion (Laurell technique; r = 0.…

Subjective objectivity. How journalists in four countries define a key term of their profession

1993

'Objectivity' is one of the core professional values of journalism. However, there are many different definitions and interpretations of the term in the profession. These notions have changed over time in one country, and they differ between journalists in different cultural and political settings. In this paper we present comparative results of how journalists in different countries look at the term objectivity. The data are gathered from an international study of news journalists in democracies. In this survey, representative samples of reporters and editors who are involved in daily news decisions were interviewed with the same questionnaire. We show how journalists differ in their noti…

Multiclonal Synovial T Cell Response toYersinia enterocoliticain Reactive Arthritis: TheYersinia61-kDa Heat-Shock Protein Is Not the Major Target Ant…

1993

The T cell response to bacterial antigens plays a major role in the pathogenesis of reactive arthritis (ReA) following enteric infections with Yersinia enterocolitica. To study the antigen specificity of the T cells at the site of inflammation, the response of cloned T cells from the synovial fluid of 2 patients with ReA to partially purified antigens of Yersinia enterocolitica was determined. The clones showed different patterns of response to various fractions, indicating a multiclonal response to Yersinia antigens, and these specificities differed in the 2 patients. Some T cells were specific for Y. enterocolitica; some cross-reacted with other enterobacteria. Proteins of 14 and 19 kDa c…

The best choice problem with an unknown number of objects

1993

The secretary problem with a known prior distribution of the number of candidates is considered. Abstract The six title compounds have been synthesized from Li/KSi/GePh 3 and chloride precursors in THF, DME or diethyl ether at low temperature. The six compounds crystallize isomorphously in the space group Pbca with ordered arrangement for the four symmetrical cases (SiSi 2.394, SiGe 2.412, GeGe 2.440 A) and statistical alignment for the two asymmetrical chains; angle range 116.5–123.3°. Replacement of Si by Ge atoms leads to low field NMR chemical shifts for 13 C ipso atoms and for directly bonded 29 Si atoms. This is in accordance with an enhanced electronegativity of germanium in comparison with silicon. UV/Vis and IR/Raman data are given.

Decompression/Stabilization of the Metastatic Spine: Cotrel-Dubousset-Lnstrumentation in 50 Patients Jan

1993

50 patients with metastatic disease of the spine underwent dorsal decompression and stabilization with the Cotrel-Dubousset-Instrumentation from 1987 to 1991. Indications for surgical treatment were neurologic deficit, spinal instability, and/or pain resistant to medical or radiation treatment. No external orthotics were used postoperatively. Pain was relieved dramatically in 45 patients. Among 25 patients suffering from neurologic deficit preoperatively, 13 improved, 15 remained unchanged, whereas 2 developed an incomplete, transient paraplegia. 15 (7) patients were alive after 1 (2) years. Postoperative complications were frequent, but there were only 2 failures of the stabilization devic…

Grafted polymer layers under shear: A Monte Carlo simulation

1993

Endgrafted polymers at surfaces exposed to a shear flow are modeled by a nonequilibrium Monte Carlo method where the jump rate of effective monomers to neighboring lattice sites against the flow direction is smaller than in the flow direction, assuming that this difference in jump rates is proportional to the local velocity of the flowing fluid. In the dilute case of isolated chains, the velocity profile is assumed linearly increasing with the distance from the surface, while for the case of polymer brushes the screening of the velocity field is calculated using a parabolic density profile for the brush whose height is determined self‐consistently. Linear dimensions of isolated chains are o…

The growth of oxide platelets on nickel in pure oxygen. II. Surface analyses and growth mechanism

1993

The structural properties of NiO platelets emerging from a primary oxide layer by oxidation of pretreated nickels in pure oxygen between 650 and 800° C have been investigated in relation with the initial metallic layers and the primary oxide. Surface composition and segregation of impurities were also studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy. Textural properties and structural orientation of both the primary oxide layer and the platelets were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Platelets grew along {111} planes, leading to elliptical or semicircular bicrystals. The driving force for the present type of growth originates from…

A spin rotator for producing a longitudinally polarized electron beam with MAMI

1993

Abstract The design and performance characteristics of a full 4 π-space spin rotator for 100 keV electrons are described. The spin rotator was developed as part of the acceleration scheme for polarized electrons in the MAINZ race track microtron cascade MAMI [1]. It allows to orientate the polarization vector in any direction before injection. Thus it is possible to optimize the longitudinal polarization component, required for experiments with polarized high energy electrons, at target position. With this scheme various experimental halls can be supplied with longitudinally polarized electrons in the full energy range of MAMI between 180 and 855 MeV.

A generalization of Sardinas and Patterson's algorithm to z-codes

1993

Abstract This paper concerns the framework of z-codes theory. The main contribution consists in an extension of the algorithm of Sardinas and Patterson for deciding whether a finite set of words X is a z-code. To improve the efficiency of this test we have found a tight upper bound on the length of the shortest words that might have a double z-factorization over X. Some remarks on the complexity of the algorithm are also given. Moreover, a slight modification of this algorithm allows us to compute the z-deciphering delay of X.

Egg and larval load assessment and its influence on oviposition behaviour of the leaf beetle Galerucella nymphaeae

1993

The oviposition behaviour of the water-lily beetle Galerucella nymphaeae was examined. This species is a specialist herbivore on the floating leaves of nymphaeids Nymphaeaceae and especially on the yellow water-lily, Nuphar lutea. Females lay their eggs in clutches on the leaves, and after hatching, the larvae feed on the leaves. The quality of the leaves decreases quickly after the larvae hatch, and eventually the leaves will sink below the water surface, whereupon the eggs, 1st-instar larvae and pupae are killed by drowning. The influence of conspecific eggs, larvae and feeding tracks on the oviposition preferences of the beetles was tested. Females were allowed to choose between fresh le…

Gamow-Teller decay of 118Pd and of the new isotope 120Pd

1993

Abstract With the use of the proton-induced fission of 238 U and the ion guide-fed on-line mass separation, even- A isotopes of palladium with high neutron excess were studied by means of γ-ray and conversion-electron spectroscopy. The decay of 118 Pd was reinvestigated in detail, and evidence for the new isotope 120 Pd, with a half-life T 1 2 = 0.5 ± 0.1 s , was found. As established for 118 Pd and tentatively shown for 120 Pd, the β-decay of these two isotopes proceeds mainly through 0 + → 1 + Gamow-Teller transitions with log ft values between 4.2 and 4.7. The strength of individual transitions has been compared with the predictions of the shell-correction model with a deformed Woods-Sax…

Isolation, biochemical characterization, long-term culture, and phenotype modulation of oval cells from carcinogen-fed rats.

1993

Oval cells are liver epithelial cells that proliferate during hepatocarcinogenesis and chemically induced severe liver injury. It has been suggested that these cells represent hepatic stem cells which might play an important role in the histogenesis of cholangiocellular as well as hepatocellular carcinomas. In order to test this hypothesis highly purified oval cell preparations and propagable oval cell lines are needed. In the present study the isolation, biochemical characterization, and long-term culture of oval cells from rats fed a choline-deficient/DL-ethionine-supplemented diet for 6, 14, or 22 weeks are described. The freshly isolated oval cells were gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase-posi…

Magnetresonanztomographie bei chronischer Aortendissektion

1993

17 patients with chronic aortic dissection were examined by MRI. In 12 patients, comparison between gradient echo sequences and SE sequences was possible. Gradient echo sequences, unlike SE sequences, permitted evaluation of flow in the true and false lumen, reliable differentiation between thrombus and flowing blood and clear delineation of the intimal flap. An additional comparison between transoesophageal ultrasound and MRT in 15 patients showed significant advantages in favour of MRI. In three patients MRI was able to detect more proximal origins of the dissection. Moreover, MRI allowed evaluation of the major aortic branches and their relation to the dissection; this was not possible w…

Loss of heterozygosity at the short arm of chromosome 3 in renal‐cell cancer correlates with the cytological tumour type

1993

A majority of renal-cell tumours retain heterozygosity at the short arm of chromosome 3. To investigate possible histopathological differences between tumours with and without such losses, we compared loss of heterozygosity data from 51 tumours with 1 histological and 2 different cytological classifications of renal-cell tumour. Using the cytological classification of Thoenes et al., we only found tumours with loss of heterozygosity in these authors' clear-cell category. Possibly, only these tumours arise by a mechanism of double loss of a tumour-suppressor gene on 3p, non-clear-cell renal tumours having a different genetic background. Alternatively, deletions may occur in all subtypes, in …

The effect of the type of colloid on the efficacy of hypertonic saline colloid mixtures in hemorrhagic shock: dextran versus hydroxyethyl starch

1993

Colloids increase and prolong the efficacy of hypertonic saline solutions in hemorrhagic shock. We compared the efficacy of dextran 60 and hydroxyethyl starch (HES) 200,000/0.5 at iso-oncotic concentrations of 6.5 or 6% in a 7.5% NaCI solution. Thirty-two rabbits were bled to maintain a mean arterial pressure at 35 mmHg. Twenty-five percent of the shed blood volume was replaced after 40 min by bolus infusion either with hypertonic dextran (HS-DEX) (n = 16) or with hypertonic hydroxyethyl starch (HS-HES) (n = 16). The animals were then observed for a 120-min period. In both groups immediate and complete restoration of cardiovascular function was achieved in up to 30 min and adequate restorat…

An experimental investigation on natural convection of air in a vertical channel

1993

Abstract The free convection of air in a vertical channel is studied experimentally in a laboratory model of height H = 2.6 m and rectangular cross-section b × s , with b = 1.2 m and the channel width s variable. One of the channel walls is heated with a uniform heat flux. Tests are made with different values of channel gap and heating power ( s = 7.5, 12.5, 17 cm; q c = 48–317 W m −2 ). On the basis of the results two empirical formulae are found, giving Nu and Re as functions of Ra and the geometrical parameter s/H ; Nu = 0.9282 Ra 0.2035 (s/H) 0.8972 ; Re = 0.5014 Ra 0.3148 (s/H) 0.418 . The mathematical form of these relationships reproduces other previously published formulae, valid fo…

Selective action of two aporphines at alpha 1-adrenoceptors and potential-operated Ca2+ channels.

1993

Abstract Contractions evoked by noradrenaline (1 μM) or a depolarizing solution of 60 mM KCI were concentration dependently depressed by the aporphine alkaloids (S)-boldine and (R)-apomorphine in rataorta. Both drugs had a greater inhibitory potency on the contraction elicited by noradrenaline. Dose-response curves for noradrenaline were shifted to the right in presence of (S)-boldine. (R)-Apomorphine acted by a complex mechanism at α 1 -adrenoceptors and its inhibitory effects was irreversible. The conformational features of these alkaloids may explain their different behaviour at α 1 -adrenoceptors. In Ca 2+ -free solution, the alkaloids inhibited the contraction evoked by noradrenaline b…

Radial cracks around α-quartz inclusions in almandine: Constraints on the metamorphic history of the Oman mountains

1993

Radiating tensional cracks around α-quartz inclusions in almandine have been observed in metapelite samples from the southeastern Saih Hatat tectonic window, northeastern Oman Mountains. These almandines show an inclusion-rich (glaucophane + epidote) and strongly deformed core with inclusions of different mineral phases. The rim of the same almandines is inclusion-poor and shows only quartz, apatite, zircon, rutile and BaAl phosphates as inclusions. Quartz and apatite inclusions in the rim are single crystals often surrounded by radial cracks. These radial cracks developed during uplift by the dilation of α-quartz (4–5 vol%) without a phase transformation. Subsequently, these cracks were fi…

Continuum-uniform approach calculations of the solubility of hydrocarbons in water

1993

Abstract The ransfer free energies from gas phase to water for some hydrocarbons are calculated by means of a continuum-uniform model of the solvent. For the calculation of the cavitation energy a model based on the surface tension is proposed. The calculated values are compared with the experimental free energies obtained with and without a corrective factor that accounts for the difference in the solute—solvent sizes. Good agreement between the theoretical free energies and the corrected experimental data is obtained. Our calculations seem to show that the hydrophobic effect is directly related to the molecular surface area.

Control of activated sludge settleability using preaeration and preprecipitation

1993

This paper deals with the addition of a preaeration and a preprecipitation stage to a conventional activated sludge process. The experiments were carried out in a pilot plant using wastewater from the city of Valencia (Spain) as feed. The effect of the F/M ratio and sludge age on sludge settleability was established. In both cases, process stability was observed to increase with respect to the conventional process. Good sludge settleability was thus assured in a greater F/M ratio range. A comparative economic study was also carried out.

Complexation equilibria between the open-chain terminally methylated polyamines 1,14-bis(methylamino)-3,6,9,12- tetraazatetradecane (L1), 1,17-bis(methylamino)-3,6,9,12,15-pentaazaheptadecane (L2), 1,20-bis(methylamino)- 3,6,9,12,15,18-hexaazaicosane (L3) and 1,23-bis(methylamino)-3,6,9,12,15,18,21-heptaazatricosane (L4) with Co2+ and Ni2+ have been studied by means of potentiometric and spectrophotometric methods in 0.15 mol dm−3 NaClO4 aqueous solution at 298.15 K The stability constants for the complexes formed have been determined from e.m.f, data. All these ligands form mononuclear ML2+ complexes of similar stability with Co2+ and Ni2+. Binuclear Co2L44+, Ni2L34+ and Ni2L44+ are also f…

Effect of sertraline treatment on benzodiazepine receptors in the rat brain.

1993

In this paper we describe the modification of benzodiazepine (BDZ) binding sites in the rat brain after different times of treatment with the 5-hydroxytryptamine-(5HT) uptake blocker sertraline. We investigated the effect of 8, 15 and 30 days sertraline treatment (10 mg/kg/day, i.p.) on 3 H-flunitrazepam binding sites. In order to describe the anatomical site of action of the drug, the experiment has been carried out by means of quantitative receptor autoradiography. After 8 days of sertraline treatment, an increase of BDZ receptor density is found in the olfactory tubercle. This effect is reversed at 15 and 30 days. At 15 days of treatment, an increase is found in the anterior cingulate co…

Mononuclear mixed oxosulfidomolybdate(VI) complexes with aminodicarboxylic ligands. Synthesis and spectroscopic characterization by multinulcear magn…

1993

Addition of B2S3 to a methanolic solution of the MoVIO3L2− complex (L=N,N-bis(ethanoic acid)-1-amino-2- methylthio-ethane) results in the formation of two different monomeric oxosulfidomolybdate(VI) complexes, [MoO2SL]2− and [MoOS2L]2− as indicated by 1H, 13C, 17O and 95Mo NMR spectroscopy and by the reaction of these two sulfurated species with triphenylphosphine. The temperature dependences of the 1H NMR spectra indicate exchange processes for both sulfido complexes. Their redox properties are discussed and contrasted with those observed for the parent fac-trioxo molybdenum(VI) complex. The primary synthetic route to mixed oxosulfido [MoO3−nSnL]2− complexes described here can be extended …

Neue chemotherapeutisch-aktive 4-trifluormethylpyrimidine

1993

Abstract Condensation of N -(2-hydroxyethyl)- N -methylguanidine sulfate with various β-diketonesbearing 1,1,1-trifluoromethyl substituents leads to 2-[ N -(2-hydroxyethyl)-methylamino]-4-trifluoromethylpyrimidine derivatives. These compounds exhibit antimycotic, trichomonazide and anti-HIV properties.
