Influence of the concentration of oxygen on the swimming path of Brachionus plicatilis (Rotifera)

Brachionus plicatilis females were maintained for > 24 hours in water where the concentration of oxygen was precisely controlled (spherical flasks with ≥ 6 mg 1−1 or < 0.5 mg 1−1; food = dead Tetraselmis sp.). Each female was randomly taken from one flask and quickly placed in an observation chamber containing the same experimental conditions. The swimming path was videotaped (5 minutes); then the size of the female was measured. Transfer of powers and reallocation of the social capital available to junior governments

The article starts from the assumption that the production of junior governments in sub-central jurisdictions such as the department of the region is related both to the powers or resources that they receive from the central government and to the social capital which is available to them. A model is proposed in which both elements are considered as factors o f production. The second being able to move only slowly across levels of jurisdiction, the central government is itself unable to transfer rapidly powers or resources from one level to another without running the risk of an efficiency loss of the whole which it would find unacceptable in terms of electoral support.

Crystal structures and absolute configurations of dexmedetomidine and its tosyl derivative

Abstract X-ray diffraction data were used to determine the absolute configuration of dexmedetomidine, a new member of a class of drugs with 4-arylalkyl-1H-imidazole structure. When the anomalous effect of the parent compound proved to be too small for determination of the absolute configuration the tosyl derivative, with the same configuration, was synthesised and used as a reference. Stability of the stereogenic center was verified by HPLC technique. The absolute configuration of the compounds is S. Complete crystal structures are reported for both compounds. Co radiation was used for measurements.

Tratamiento quirúrgico de las fracturas vertebrales mediante instrumentación segmentaria Cotrel-Dubousset

Los autores presentan su experiencia personal en el tratamiento quirúrgico de las fracturas vertebrales torácicas y lumbares. Han sido incluidos en el estudio 27 pacientes operados entre 1988 y 1991, todos ellos estabilizados mediante la instrumentación Cotrel Dubousset. Excepto tres pacientes, todos fueron intervenidos por vía posterior. Se realiza un estudio de los resultados obtenidos desde el punto de vista radiológico (índice sagital, porcentaje de ocupación de canal), funcional y neurológico. Determination of titratable acidity and ascorbic acid in fruit juices in continuous-flow systems

Two continuous-flow systems for the determination of titratable acidity and ascrobic acid in fruit juice samples are described. The assemblies permit on-line dialysis of analytes prior to the reaction step, thus improving selectivity and performing sample dilution. Flow systems are built with a channel carrying the donor phase (sample in both determinations) and another channel carrying an acceptor phase, both of them entering the dialyser. Abstract In this paper the generalization of the Itd and Stratonovich integrals for the case of non-linear systems excited by parametric delta-correlated processes is presented. This generalization gives a new light on the corrective coefficients in the stochastic differential equations driven by parametric delta-correlated processes. Los resultados tras reemplazamiento total de cadera con prótesis de superficie porometal «poropros», para fijación biológica, han sido evaluados en 106 pacientes después de tres años de evolución. La valoración clínica se ha realizado según el sistema de Harris modificado, obteniendo un 91,5% de buenos resultados y un 8,5% de resultados regulares incluyendo todos los enfermos de cualquier edad y patología. In this paper we analyze the laws of growth that control planktic foraminiferal shell morphology. We assume that isometry is the key toward the understanding of their ontogeny. Hence, our null hypothesis is that these organisms construct isometric shells. To test this hypothesis, geometric models of their shells have been generated with a personal computer. It is demonstrated that early chambers in log-spirally coiled structures cannot follow a strict isometric arrangement. In the real world, the centers of juvenile chambers deviate from the logarithmic growth curve. Juvenile stages are generally more planispiral and contain more chambers per whorl than adult stages. Alkoxy derivatives of titanium supported on [MgCl2(THF)2] and activated with organoaluminium compounds polymerize ethylene under low pressure in high yields. In propylene polymerization, however, they show low activity and low isospecificity. Attempts were made to elucidate the correlation between the results of polymerization and the inductive effects of alkoxy ligands in titanium components of catalysts. Se presenta un varón de 25 años, con fractura del astrágalo izquierdo tratada mediante osteosíntesis con 2 tornillos de acero inoxidable con un contenido en níquel del 12-14%. A los 4 meses de la intervención, el paciente desarrolló una dermatitis pruriginosa en cara lateral externa del pie, en la zona cutánea supra-adyacente al lugar de la osteosíntesis. La lesión no cedió con el tratamiento tópico convencional a base de corticoides. This study has used neuropsychological tasks – Wisconsin Card Sort (WCST), Trail Making (TMT) A and B, Verbal Fluency, Digit Span – to compare acute and currently off-medication schizophrenics, patients with unipolar nonpsychotic major depression and healthy controls. Both patient groups differed significantly from healthy controls in their neuropsychological performance. Furthermore there was only little (quantitative) difference between schizophrenics and depressed patients in the frontal lobe associated tasks: WCST, TMT and Verbal Fluency. Lipid composition of the vacuolar membrane of Acer pseudoplatanus cultured cells

Tonoplast was prepared by osmotic lysis of a pure vacuolar fraction isolated from protoplasts derived from Acer pseudoplatanus cultured cells. After their extraction, neutral and polar lipids were separated by a thin layer chromatography. Phospholipids, glycolipids and neutral lipids represented 44.5%, 39.1% and 16.4% of total lipids, respectively. Sterols (glycosylated plus non-glycosylated forms) constituted 30.8% of total lipids; 75% of sterols were glycosylated. In guinea pigs, an acute acoustic trauma was created by 6 consecutive gunshots. The sound pressure at the ear drum was 156 +/- 4 dB, the frequency maximum was between 4 and 6 kHz. Sixty hours after the noise trauma, the animals were decapitated, and the cochleae were prepared for microscopic analysis of the resulting trauma to the organ of Corti. During the process of fixation, the potassium-pyroantimonate precipitation reaction was performed to localize calcium-binding sites.
