Untersuchungen mit dem Validierungskriterium „Therapieansprechen“

1993

Extrapituitary Effects of Corticotropin Releasing Hormone and Thyrotropin Releasing Hormone

1993

Besides their regulation of the pituitary-adrenal and pituitary-thyroidal axis, respectively, the neurohormones CRH and TRH act within the central nervous system to evoke and modulate a number of behavioral and physiological processes. In particular, an increase in the sympathetic nervous system and respiratory activity has been observed. The data communicated in this review article emphasize the role of these neurohormones with regard to the neuroendocrine regulation of the autonomic nervous system, sleep and cognitive performance. Moreover, a possible therapeutic role is suggested by the beneficial effects in patients at risk of hypoventilation-associated disorders.

On the signature of four-manifolds with universal covering spin

1993

In this note we study closed oriented 4-manifolds whose universal covering is spin and ask whether there are restrictions on the divisibility of the signature. Since any natural number appears as the signature of a connected sum of r 2,s, without the assumption on the universal covering there cannot exist any restrictions. Certainly, the most famous such restriction was proved by Rohlin in [10], where he showed that the signature a of a smooth 4-dimensional spin manifold is divisible by 16 (compare part (2) of our Main Theorem for a new proof). The Kummer surface K shows that this is the best possible general result. Dividing by a certain free holomorphic involution on K, one obtains the En…

1993

The aim of the study was to describe the objective factors (clinical values, scores, basic and concomitant illnesses) that could possibly justify the omittance of intensive therapy. In a prospective study in 169 postoperative intensive therapy patients, it was shown that scores (APACHE II, HIS, TISS) serum-lactate and serum creatinine were significant prognostic parameters for lethal outcome, while these parameters had no effect on the prognosis after patients were discharged. Primarily, the presence of a malignant disease and/or the age of the patient were decisive. By considering these factors for lethal outcome and long-term prognosis, it is possible to identify patients who do not benef…

Sorption Kinetics of Benzene and p-Xylene on Template Supported Synthesized Gallosilicates

1993

Adsorption equilibria and kinetics of benzene and p-xylene on microporous gallosilicates (Ga-MFI) were measured piezometrically to ascertain the role of Ga in the system and to compare it with Ga-free MFI structures. The intracrystalline mobility of benzene follows a diffusional mechanism throughout the entire concentration range with an energy of activation that considerably exceeds that for the Ga-free species (78 kJmol−1 and 26 kJmol−1, respectively). For p-xylene, the kinetics indicate the existence of three sorption states. Sorbing species become highly immobile at a pore filling of ca n > 4 molecules per unit cell, i.e. in the range of concentration where isotherm hysteresis occurs. T…

Lack of antiandrogenic effects of topical bifonazole on sebaceous glands and hairs in the hamster flank organ.

1993

The activity of topically applied bifonazole was evaluated in vivo in the three androgen-dependent structures of the hamster flank organ, i.e. the pigmented spot, sebaceous glands and hairs. Topical bifonazole in our experience did not demonstrate any morphological effect on sebaceous gland and hair even when applied in the dosage of 3 mg/cm2/day. On the basis of our morphometric results we can conclude that topically applied bifonazole does not interfere with cutaneous androgen metabolic transformations in the pilosebaceous unit of the flank organ.

1993

A high pressure liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method to determine zearalenone in corn contaminated withFusarium graminearum is described. After extraction with methanol-water and solvent partition, samples were cleaned up by applying the extract to a disposable silica cartridge and by eluting the toxin with a mixture of hexane/dry ethyl ether (5/5). Separation was achieved by a reverse phase μBondapak C18 column followed by fluorescence detection using an excitation wavelength at 274 nm and an emission wavelength at 440 nm. Detection limit was about 5 ng. Recoveries ranging from 85.37 to 100.97%, in standard solutions range 30–0.5 µg/ml, were found.

Food partitioning between Serranus scriba and Scorpaena porcus (Perciformes) on the infralittoral ground of the South Tyrrhenian Sea.

1993

Food preferences of Scorpaena porcus and Serranus scriba were investigated from the stomach contents of fish caught with trammel nets in the Gulf of Palermo (Tyrrhenian Sea). Decapoda Natantia and Decapoda Brachyura were the main preferred prey in the diet of S. porcus whereas Decapoda Natantia, Decapoda Galatheidae and Pisces were the preferred prey for S. scriba. These results and the values of the index of overlapping alimentary requirements suggested competition for food resources between the two species. A more precise investigation, at species level, of the food remains of the most abundant taxon (Crustacea Decapoda) made it possible to demonstrate that the trophic niche overlap betwe…

Double-Electron Excitations in L-edges X-ray-Absorption Spectra of W, Ir and Cs Oxide Compounds

1993

Very strong double-electron excitations have been observed for the first time in the W, Ir L 3-edge and Cs L 1,2,3-edges X-ray-absorption spectra of tungsten and iridium oxide thin films and cesium oxide containing glasses. They are expressed as peaks with a width of several electron-volts located at the absorption background above the edge. The positions of these features are in good agreement with atomic calculations in the Z+1 approximation. They can be attributed to the transitions 2p4d → 5d5d for the L 2,3-edges and 2s4d → 6p5d for the L 1-edge with the dipole selection rules for the angular and total angular momentum ΔL=±1, ΔJ=0,±1.

Site-specificity of pea histone acetyltransferase B in vitro

1993

Histone acetyltransferase B from pea embryonic axes has been purified approximately 300-fold by a combination of chromatographic procedures, including affinity chromatography on histone-agarose. The enzyme preparation has been used for the in vitro transfer of acetyl groups from [1-14C]acetyl-CoA to non-acetylated pea histone H4. Up to three acetyl groups can be introduced into the histone. The resulting mono-, di-, and triacetylated H4 isoforms were separated and sequenced to determine the acetylated sites. Only sites 5, 12, and 16 were used by histone acetyltransferase B, but no clear preference among them was observed. The absence of modification of other potentially acetylatable sites i…

In this lexical essay we have tried to demonstrate if the terminology for “death” was kept as a constant in authors as distant temporarily as Lucretius, Seneca, Augustine and Sidonius. The differences fou…

General formulae for polarization observables in deuteron electrodisintegration and linear relations

1993

Formal expressions are derived for all possible polarization observables in deuteron electrodisintegration with longitudinally polarized incoming electrons, oriented deuteron targets and polarization analysis of outgoing nucleons. They are given in terms of general structure functions which can be determined experimentally. These structure functions are Hermitean forms of theT-matrix elements which, in principle, allow the determination of allT-matrix elements up to an arbitrary common phase. Since the set of structure functions is overcomplete, linear relations among various structure functions exist which are derived explicitly.

On the Pauli-Villars regularisation scheme in the NJL model

1993

Abstract We consider the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with a Pauli-Villars cutoff. We point out that previous attempts to use this regularisation have not been consistent and it is shown that if used correctly this approach yields very reasonable values for the cutoff parameter and quark condensate when we demand that ƒπ is fixed to its experimental value. Finally it is argued that because of its covariance and smooth nature this regularisation scheme has significant advantages over other regulators on the market.

Quark and gluon distributions and $\alpha_{s}$ from nucleon structure functions at low $x$

1993

Abstract The Q2 dependence of the structure functions F2p and F2d recently measured by the NMC is compared with the predictions of perturbative QCD at next-to-leading order. Good agreement is observed, leading to accurate determinations of the quark and gluon distributions in the range 0.008 ⩽ × ⩽ 0.5. The strong coupling constant is measured from the low x data; the result agrees with previous determinations.

The Pauli Principle and Systems Consisting of Composite Particles

1993

In nature we often deal with many-body systems that are described in terms of particles that are not elementary but themselves composite. Examples of such composite particles are hadrons, atoms, phonons, and Cooper pairs. For the description of systems consisting of such composite particles in terms of the underlying degrees of freedom group theory plays an important role, in particular the symmetric group to describe the permutational symmetry of the wave function of the system, and unitary groups to describe the symmetry forced on the system by the interaction between the particles.

Quantum Groups, Star Products and Cyclic Cohomology

1993

After some historical remarks, we start with a rapid overview of the star-product theory (deformation of algebras of functions on phase space) and its applications to deformation-quantization. We then concentrate on Poisson-Lie groups and their “quantization”, give a star-product realization of quantum groups and discuss uniqueness and the rigidity as bialgebra of a universal model for the quantum SL(2) groups. In the last part we develop the notion of closed star-product (for which a trace can be defined on the algebra), show that it is classified by cyclic cohomology, permits to define a character and that there always exists one; finally we show that the pseudodifferential calculus on a …

Intravesical mitoxantrone in superficial bladder tumours (Ta-T1)

1993

Abstract 36 patients with histologically proven grade G1–G2, Ta-T1 transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder were introduced, after transurethral resection (TUR), into a study of intravesical chemoprophylaxis with mitoxantrone (20 mg diluted in 50 ml). After a mean follow-up of 23 months, 16 (50%) patients showed a superficial recurrence with a mean recurrence rate of 0.56 per year. In 19 patients with recurring tumours the mean recurrence rate decreased from 1.65 to 0.58 per year. 9 patients (25.7%) suffered from a chemical cystitis that in 2 cases (5.7%) required treatment interruption.

Effects of interferon gamma on the proliferation and modulation of cell-surface structures of human ovarian carcinoma cell lines.

1993

Platinum-containing regimens are very effective in the primary treatment of ovarian cancer. However, upon subsequent treatment most tumors develop multidrug resistance. The clinical application of biological response modifiers like interferon gamma (IFN gamma) in advanced ovarian cancer is therefore of increasing interest. Permanent ovarian cancer cell lines are suitable for investigating the mode of action and the potential clinical effectiveness of such response modifiers. IFN gamma is known to modulate many cellular functions. In this study it was compared for its antiproliferative and antigen-modulatory activity on the expression of tumor-associated (CA-125, HMFG, CEA) and major histoco…

Persistent Tonic Facial Contraction: A Local Brain-Stem Sign

1993

Impairment of facial motility associated with contralateral hemiparesis is characteristic of pontine lesions. In the Millard-Gubler and Foville syndromes, involvement of the facial nerve is nuclear or infranuclear, resulting in a peripheral-type palsy. Conditions of pontine origin showing hyperactivity of facial muscles are facial myokymia and Brissaud’s syndrome. Brissaud and Sicard [4] reported low-frequency phasic cramplike facial contractions and contralateral hemiparesis in inflammatory brain-stem processes.
