Simultaneous Automated Determination of Catecholamines, Serotonin, and Their Metabolites in Brain Tissue by HPLC and Electrochemical Detection

1993

Abstract A robust procedure with minimal tissue sample pretreatment, based on reversed-phase, ion-pair high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) combined with electrochemical detection has been developed for the automated and simultaneous determination of the biogenic amines norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (E), dopamine (DA), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and their metabolites 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethyleneglycol (MHPG), 3,4-dihydroxyacetic acid (DOPAC), homovanillic acid (HVA) and 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid (H I A A) in as little as 0.5 mg brain tissue. The chromatographic conditions remain stable for at least 8 weeks. In particular small amounts of samples which do not allow reexamina…

Influence of sugar and fat contents on preference for cream cheese: A preliminary study

1993

Abstract In order to assess the importance of fat and sugar in acceptability of semi-solid French cream cheese, 30 subjects gave a hedonic judgement, after consumption, for three formulations (150 g) varying in fat content which they were required to sweeten and for nine small previously sweetened samples (30 g). Subjects participated in five laboratory meals, cream cheese being the third part of a meal. After this period, the subjects filled out a questionnaire measuring attitudes, beliefs and intention of behaviour with regard to consumption of cream cheese. Sugar level had no significant effect on the hedonic judgement. However, the subjects added less sugar in the high fat cream cheese …

Unpopular policies and the theory of representative democracy

1993

Their platforms reflect concern with enhancing the probability of being elected, but some candidates often, or all candidates occasionally, voluntarily adept stances that reduce that probability. Governments care about their popularity, but sometimes they choose, even before an election, to announce or implement policies that are unpopular. For most people, the phenomenon is no news and is not altogether a unhappy one. Deprecating words such as demagogy or "mob rule" and praising ones such as leadership or statesmanship express a deeply-rooted, widelyshared concern about the possibility that democratic politicians could be too subservient to public opinion.(...)

One Loop Efects of Non-Standard Gauge Boson Vertices

1993

Low energy effects of generic extensions of the Standard Model can be comprehensively parametrized in terms of higher dimensional effective operators. After the success of all the recent precission tests on the Standard Model, we argue that any sensible description of these extensions at the Z-scale must be stable under higher order quantum corrections. The imposition of SU(2)L×U(1)Y gauge invariance seems to be the simplest and most natural way to fulfill this requirement. With this assumption, all the possible deviations from the standard triple gauge boson vertices can be consistently parametrized in terms of a finite set of gauge invariant operators. We deal here with those operators th…

The Homeostasis of Brain Choline

1993

The interest in the homeostasis of brain choline is reinforced by the role of choline as immediate precursor of acetylcholine, phosphatidylcholine and other phospholipids in the brain. In order to obtain a comprehensive view of the mochanisms of homeostasis it appeared necessary to elucidate the negative arteriovenous difference of choline across the brain (net release), a phenomenon that has been known for 20 years and is present in mammals and in man. This finding prompted an intense search for a de novo synthesis of choline in the brain. We detected in anaesthetized rats a reversal of the net release into a net uptake (positive arterio-venous difference), when the plasma level of choline…

Studies on the UV-photolytic decomposition of some tensides and complexones inhibiting the inverse-voltammetric determination of metal ions

1993

The UV-photolytic decomposition of some tensides and complexones has been investigated using the DPASV peak of indium as an indicator. The results show that UV-irradiation alone can completely decompose these compounds at lower concentrations within a short time. Higher concentrations need an additional oxidising agent.

Coexpression of extracellular matrix glycoproteins undulin and tenascin in human autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

1993

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common entity of cystic diseases of the kidney leading to end-stage renal insufficiency. Changes in extracellular matrix (ECM) are regarded to be an important pathogenic factor connected with the genes assumed to be responsible for human ADPKD. In order to assess the biological significance of altered expression and deposition of ECM glycoproteins for human ADPKD at molecular levels fresh-frozen tissue from ADPKD kidneys, fetal kidneys and normal adult kidneys were comparatively tested by immunohistochemistry for the presence of multifunctional ECM glycoproteins undulin, tenascin and fibronectin, interstitial collagen types I,…

We may state that the path of development of an organism can play an important role in its immediate realization and also in its possible transformation. This leads to the problem of the existence of a causative link between individual development (ontogeny) and evolutionary history (phylogeny). This problem which has been dealt with by numerous authors, has led to contradictory answers, depending on the direction of the supposed connection: from the evolutionary history to individual development or vice versa, that is, from individual development to the evolutionary history.

A Consistent Boundary/Interior Element Method for Evolutive Elastic Plastic Structural Analysis

1993

A symmetric/sign-definite formulation of the BEM to address the evolutive elastic plastic analysis of structures is presented. A wide class of material models with internal variables and thermodynamic potential is considered. Different energy methods—namely the boundary min-max principle, the Helmholtz free energy and the maximum intrinsic dissipation theorem—axe employed in order to provide the discretization operations by boundary elements and cell elements with inherent variational consistency. The resulting space-discretized equations can be solved by a step-by-step procedure and a predictor/corrector iteration scheme, with corrections operated locally cell-by-cell, just as with the FEM…

Effect of sublethal exposure to mercury in the biochemical composition of hepatopancreas in Procambarus clarkii during the recovery after starvation

1993

Abstract Freshwater crayfish undergo seasonal periods of starvation. The hepatopancreas is the main energetic-storage organ in this animal. An adequate replenishment of energetic reserves after these periods of fasting is critical for the proper growth and reproduction in this species. Mercury compounds enter the biological environment from natural discharges and anthropogenic sources. Mercuric chloride is one of the most toxic metallic salts found in polluted waters. In these studies, we report the effect of mercuric chloride in the biochemical composition of crayfish hepatopancreas during the recovery period after prolonged starvation. Adult intermolt crayfish (P. clarkii) were kept starv…

A single trapped antiproton and antiprotons for antihydrogen production

1993

During the last several years, our TRAP collaboration has pioneered techniques for slowing, trapping, cooling and indefinitely storing antiprotons to energies more than 1010 times lower than previously possible. The radio signal from a single trapped antiproton is now being used for precision measurements. Many cold antiprotons are “stacked” as another important step toward the eventual production of antihydrogen, and positrons have been trapped in vacuum.

Laser Beam Lithography For 3-D Surface Patterning

1993

A low power laser processing unit, for microlithographic applications on non-planar surfaces, is described. By combining proper laser beam handling, micropositioning, software control and surface coating techniques, a 5-axis robotic system for laser writing has been set up. Light from a He-Cd laser source is fiber-delivered to a writing head, which moves around a resist coated solid object. After exposure, traditional wet processing can be applied. The unit is capable of patterning metal films deposited on samples up to a size of 50x50x100 mm, with 5 micrometer spatial resolution. An application in 3-D circuit fabrication is presented.

DETERMINATION OF ALPHA(S) FOR B-QUARKS AT THE Z(0) RESONANCE

1993

The strong coupling constant for b quarks has been determined, and its flavour independence, as predicted by QCD, investigated. The analysis involved events with lepton candidates selected from approximately 356 000 hadronic decays of the Z0, collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP in 1990 and 199 1. A method based on a direct comparison of the three-jet fraction in a b enriched sample, selected by requiring leptons with large momenta and transverse momenta, to that of the entire hadronic sample, illustrated the significant effect of the b quark mass on the multi-jet cross section, and verified the flavour independence of the strong coupling constant to an accuracy of +/- 6%. A second proce…

Multiple Hypotheses Testing

1993

The paper is mainly concerned with multiple testing procedures which control a given multiple level α. General concepts for this purpose are the closure test and a modification which is independent of the special structure of hypotheses and tests. We consider improvements of this modification using information about the logical dependences (redundancies) within the system of hypotheses and present an efficient algorithm. Finally, we discuss some problems which are specific for hierarchical systems of hypotheses, e.g. in model search.
