The dimeric titanium(III) and vanadium(III) complexes [M2(µ-Cl)2Cl4(thf)4](M = Ti 1 or V 2, thf = tetrahydrofuran) have been prepared by recrystallization of [MCl3(thf)3] from dichloromethane. In the dimers, composed of slightly distorted edge-sharing octahedra, the metal atoms separated by Ti ⋯ Ti and V ⋯ V distances of 3.711 (3) and 3.619(1)A, respectively, are surrounded by two terminal Cl atoms, two oxygen atoms of thf molecules and are linked by two bridging Cl atoms. EPM-1 (a high molecular weight glycoprotein) and EXO-1 (a carbohydrate epitope expressed on polar neutral glycolipids and mucins) are two developmental antigens of normal and neoplastic human epithelia and were characterised by monoclonal antibodies. Their distribution was investigated in normal and pathological human colorectal mucosa. In normal mucosa, EPM-1 and EXO-1 showed characteristic expression patterns. EPM-1 was differentially expressed along the crypt villus axis with maximum at the crypt basis. EXO-1 was present throughout the whole mucosa. En el presente trabajo exponemos nuestra experiencia en el tratamiento de la hernia discal lumbar mediante Nucleotomía Percutánea Automatizada. El estudio comprende el periodo de Junio de 1988 a Diciembre de 1992. Se incluyen un total de 425 enfermos de edades comprendidas entre los 18 y 58 años. Los pacientes han sido evaluados a las 6 semanas, a los 3 y a los 6 meses tras la intervención. Los resultados han sido satisfactorios en el 71% de los casos. Solamente hubo una complicación de espondilodiscitis. En el 29% de los casos se obtuvieron malos resultados. A method for taxonomic determination ofCandida albicans with DNA probes

Determination of Candida species represents an important problem derived from the clinical implications of the species belonging to this genus. DNA probes have already been used for the epidemiology of Candida albicans, as well as for taxonomic analysis of Candida and other genera, although these probes are based on non-species-specific DNA sequences. In this work we carried out a 48-h assay, allowing the identification of C. albicans from clinical isolates, using DNA probes based on C. albicans LEU2 and URA3 genes. Another probe related to C. albicans SEC18 gene was shown not to be C. albicans specific.

Abstract A photon tagging facility has been constructed for use with the c.w. electron beam at the Saskatchewan Accelerator Laboratory (SAL). The facility consists of a “clam-shell” type magnetic spectrometer with a 62 channel plastic scintillator focal plane detector allowing a post-bremsstrahlung electron energy resolution of 1%. Specialized focal plane and coincidence electronics have been designed and constructed at SAL and allows experiments to be performed with average tagged photon rates of greater than 1 × 108/s.

Testing a new health indicator: using avoidable causes of death and life expectancy for Spain between 1975-1986.

The concept of avoidable cause of death serves as the basis for measuring the quality and diversity of a health care system. In this study the authors propose a new way to use this kind of mortality by combining with the concept of life expectancy to obtain what they call "life expectancy free of avoidable mortality" (LEFAM). This indicator was 76.9 in 1986 in Spain while life expectancy was 75.83. If these deaths were avoidable there would be a gain of 1.09 years per person born. There is an important difference between the would-be male gain of 1.76 years and the would-be female gain of 0.6. It represents a modification of the rotary disk cell developed by Moll/Bender and can be used in a normal dissolution tester. This manuscript will detail our experience using a microscopic endonasal surgery (MES) approach in the repair of spontaneous, traumatic, and/or iatrogenic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistula into the ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses. The location of the fistula in 22 patients was determined by a direct endoscopic or microscopic visualization, intrathecal fluorescein, or computed tomography (CT) with metrizamide. The natural history of scoliosis in the literature concerning the idiopathic and neuromuscular scoliosis in myelomeningocele patients (MMC) are compared to our own results in 12 patients with MMC and 89 patients operated because of an idiopathic scoliosis. According to known experiences the natural history of scoliosis in MMC is progression even after the end of growth. The chance of developing a scoliosis increases with the patients, age and the level of the lesion. The higher the level of paralysis the more common is a spinal deformity. DETERMINATION OF ALPHA-S FROM THE SCALING VIOLATION IN THE FRAGMENTATION FUNCTIONS IN E+E- ANNIHILATION

A determination of the hadronic fragmentation functions of the Z0 boson is presented from a study of the inclusive hadron production with the DELPHI detector at LEP. These fragmentation functions were compared with the ones at lower energies, thus covering data in a large kinematic range: 196 less-than-or-equal-to Q2 less-than-or-equal-to 8312 GeV2 and x (= p(h)/E(beam)) > 0.08. A large scaling violation was observed, which was used to extract the strong coupling constant in second order QCD: alpha(s)(M(Z)) = 0.118 +/- 0.005. The corresponding QCD scale for five quark flavours is: LAMBDA(MS)(5)BAR = 230 +/- 60 MeV.

Recycling of heterogeneous plastics wastes. II—The role of modifier agents

Abstract Recycling of mixed plastics waste, mainly composed of PEs, PET and PVC has been carried out by blending with recycled polyethylene. Although the extrusion of these blends has been carried out at high temperatures, the degradation of the PVC was modest due to the short residence times. The mechanical properties of these secondary materials, up to about 30% of mixed plastics waste, are very similar to those of the recycled polyethylene, except for the elongation to break. By adding some modifier agents, the elongation at break and especially the impact strength can be further improved.
