UPDATE OF ELECTROWEAK PARAMETERS FROM Z DECAYS

Based on 520000 fermion pairs accumulated during the first three years of data collection by the ALEPH detector at LEP, updated values of the resonance parameters of the Z are determined to be M(Z) = (91.187 +/- 0.009) GeV, GAMMA(Z) = (2.501 +/- 0.012) GeV, sigma(had)0 = (41.60 +/- 0.27) nb, and R(l) = 20.78 +/- 0.13. The corresponding number of light neutrino species is N(v) = 2.97 +/- 0.05. The forward-backward asymmetry in lepton-pair decays is used to determine the ratio of vector to axial-vector couplings of leptons: g(V)2(M(z)2)/g(A)2 (M(Z)2) = 0.0052 +/- 0.00 1 6. A measurement of the tau lifetime

The tau lepton lifetime is measured using four different methods with the DELPHI detector. Three measurements using one prong decays are combined, accounting for correlations, resulting in tau(tau) = 298 +/- 7 (stat.) +/- 4 (syst.) fs while the decay length distribution of three prong decays gives tau(tau) = 298 +/- 13 (stat.) +/- 5 (syst.) fs. The combined result is tau(tau) = 298 +/- 7 fs. The ratio of the Fermi coupling constant from tau decay relative to that from muon decay is found to be 0.985 +/- 0.013, compatible with lepton universality.

Effect of simvastatin on desaturase activities in liver from lean and obese zucker rats

The effect of simvastatin, a hypocholesterolemic drug, on the biosynthesis of arachidonic acid was studied in obese and lean Zucker rats. After administration of 2 mg/kg body weight/d for 13 d, delta 6 and delta 5 desaturase activities were measured in liver microsomes at two substrate concentrations. In untreated rats, the delta 6 desaturation rate was similar in the obese and lean rats when measured at saturating substrate levels, whereas delta 5 desaturation was lower in the obese animals. Hearing screening as well as evaluation of cochlear function under therapy with ototoxic agents or patients with various diseases is increasingly done by registration of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE). Usually the standard system ILO 88 Otodynamic Analyser is used, where until now emissions were analyzed subjectively. However, evaluation of signals may be difficult mainly in the hearing threshold area. In this article we describe a method to mathematically analyze registered emissions by correlation-filtering. This allows to better identify small specific responses, to further increase the sensitivity of TEOAE, and offers a more objective means for audiologic diagnoses.

Mixis strategies and resting eeg production of rotifers living in temporally-varying habitats

A dynamic model based on six differential equations has been developed to explore the control of mixis of rotifers living in temporally-varying habitats. The equations give variation rates of amictic females, three stages of mictic females, males and resting eggs. Abstract The enantioselective epoxide biohydrolysis of the racemic benzodioxole 6,7-epoxygeraniol derivative 1 has been achieved using the fungus A. niger . This new type of preparative scale bioconversion allows the synthesis of both enantiomers of Bower's compound, an analogue of insect juvenile hormone. Biological tests showed that the 6(R) enantiomer was about ten times more active than the 6(S) enantiomer against the yellow meal worm Tenebrio molitor .

The trigeminal nerve (nV) conveys general somatic afferent exteroceptive input from the skin of the face and the frontal parts of the head, the mucous membranes of the oral cavity, tongue and nose, the tooth pulp, eye and meninges via the trigeminal (Gasserian) ganglion to the nuclei of termination [28]. Somatosensory input reaches the principal sensory nucleus of the nV and the spinal trigeminal nucleus of the nV (STN). Proprioceptive input from masticatory muscles innervated by trigeminal motor efferents is transferred to the nV mesencephalic nucleus.

Artroplastia total de cadera no cementada : resultados a corto plazo con los componentes femorales de los modelos poro-palcar y PCA

Se presentan los resultados clínicos y radiológicos, a corto plazo, referentes al componente femoral de una serie de 62 artroplastias totales de cadera no cementadas. Treinta y tres correspondían al modelo PORO-PALCAR y 29 al modelo PCA. La edad media de los pacientes fue de 62 años (ds = 9,6). El tiempo medio de seguimiento postoperatorio ha sido 2 años (1,5-3). En la valoración clínica se ha utilizado el Test de Harris. La puntuación final total alcanzó 88,7 puntos (ds = 6,9) para el modelo PCA y 83,5 puntos (ds = 13,2) para el POROPALCAR. An automatized procedure has been developed for the spectrophotometric determination of ethiofencarb in water by reaction with p-aminophenol after alkaline hydrolysis to obtain the corresponding phenol sulphone. The hydrolyzed samples are continuously introduced into different manifolds at the same time as 300 mg/l p-aminophenol, 0.004 mol/l KIO4 and 0.04 mol/l NaOH solutions. The absorbance is measured at 638 nm after a reaction time of 6 min in stop flow. A technique to estimate the Hausdorff dimension of strange attractors, based on the minimal spanning tree of the point distribution is extensively tested in this work. This method takes into account in some sense the infimum requirement appearing in the definition of the Hausdorff dimension. Techniques in the Theory of Local Bifurcations: Cyclicity and Desingularization

A fundamental open question of the bifurcation theory of vector fields in dimension 2 is whether the number of locally bifurcating limit cycles in an analytic unfolding is bounded, or more precisely, whether any limit periodic set has finite cyclicity. In these notes we introduce several techniques for attacking this question: asymptotic expansion of return maps, ideal of coefficients, desingularization of parametrized families. Moreover, because of their practical interest, we present some partial results obtained by these techniques.

In this work we study the temperature dependence of the Soret band lineshape of deoxymyoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin, in the range 300-20 K. To fit the measured spectra we use an approach originally proposed by Champion and coworkers (Srajer et al. 1986; Srajer and Champion 1991). The band profile is modelled as a Voigt function that accounts for the coupling with low frequency vibrational modes, whereas the coupling with high frequency modes is responsible for the vibronic structure of the spectra. Tutkimuksessa esitellään haastateltavien taustaa, kokemusta tavanomaisena viljelijänä, onnistumista luonnonmukaisessa viljelyssä, suunnitelmia ja uhkakuvia sekä ennen kaikkea heidän motiivejaan ryhtyä luonnonmukaiseen viljelyyn.
