Line mixing in the stimulated Raman spectrum of the ν1 band of SiH4 at 0.4-1.0 bar

1993

International audience; The stimulated Raman spectrum of the ν1 band of SiH4 has been recorded at 0.4 and 1.0 bar pressures and room temperature. Line mixing of the fine structure components of this spectrum was taken into account in a calculated profile by considering coupling between the main transitions and using a simple model (strong collision model, SCM) for the relaxation matrix.

The Internuclear Ophthalmoplegias

1993

Internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO), which is caused by an ipsilateral medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) lesion, is characterized by adduction paresis of lateral gaze, usually with spared convergence [1–4]. In the opposite eye, abduction nystagmus and hypermetric abduction saccades are the main clinical and electro-oculographic abnormalities [1, 5, 6]. The origin of both is still debated. Abduction nystagmus has been explained by (a) an additional horizontal gaze paresis [7]; (b) vergence mechanisms aimed at alignment of the visual axes [8]; (c) interruption of descending excitatory projections from oculomotor nucleus internuclear neurons to contralateral abducens nucleus motoneurons [9];…

Accumulation of monoterpenes in shoot-proliferation cultures of Lavandula latifolia Med.

1993

Abstract We studied the effect of osmotic stress (induced by the addition of mannitol to the culture medium) and abscisic acid (ABA) addition on monoterpene accumulative capability in shoot proliferating cultures of Lavandula latifolia Med. The highest shoot elongation was achieved when the elongation medium contained sucrose (3%). Increasing the medium osmolarity or adding 25–50 μM ABA in shoot elongation cultures resulted in a significant increase in monoterpene accumulation in the regenerated shoots. These monoterpenes are qualitatively similar to those produced by the parent plants. Regulation of the conditions that limit the growth in shoot proliferation cultures of L. latifolia should…

Stochastic Differential Calculus

1993

In many cases of engineering interest it has become quite common to use stochastic processes to model loadings resulting from earthquake, turbulent winds or ocean waves. In these circumstances the structural response needs to be adequately described in a probabilistic sense, by evaluating the cumulants or the moments of any order of the response (see e.g. [1, 2]). In particular, for linear systems excited by normal input, the response process is normal too and the moments or the cumulants up to the second order fully characterize the probability density function of both input and output processes. Many practical problems involve processes which are approximately normal and the effect of the…

Possible Roles of Mannoproteins in the Construction of Candida Albicans Cell Wall

1993

The shape of Candida albicans cells depends on their cell walls and some of their mannoproteins may act as modulators of the final molecular architecture. If that were the case, the wall mannoproteins might form part of what could be called a “morphogenetic code”.

Relativistic effects and spin observables in deuteron electrodisintegration

1993

The influence of relativistic effects in deuteron electrodisintegration, in particular their manifestation in spin observables, is discussed. We have used a simple phenomenological approach by adding the lowest-order relativistic corrections to the nonrelativistic one-body current and including the kinematic wave-function boost. Furthermore, final-state interaction, meson-exchange currents and isobar configurations are included in order to study kinematic regions off the quasi-free case. Sizeable relativistic effects in many observables are found even at low energies.

Muscle strength and history of heavy manual work among elderly trained women and randomly chosen sample population.

1993

The association between a history of heavy work and muscle strength was studied among 51 physically active women aged 66–85 years trained in sports and 41 women aged 70–81 years selected randomly from the population register. Maximal isometric muscle strength of hand grip, arm flexion, leg extension and trunk flexion and extension were measured using specially constructed dynamometers. The capacity of the abdominal muscles was evaluated by means of a sit-up test. The study included an interview dealing with the subjects' histories of heavy manual employment. The mean histories of heavy work for the trained and untrained women were 24 and 36 years, respectively. The trained women showed sign…

Molecular basis of mucopolysaccharidosis type II: Mutations in the iduronate-2-sulphatase gene

1993

A number of mutations in the X-chromosomal human iduronate-2-sulphatase gene have now been identified as the primary genetic defect leading to the clinical condition known as Hunter syndrome or mucopolysaccharidosis type II. The mutations that are tabulated include different deletions, splice-site and point mutations. From the group of 319 patients thus far studied by Southern analysis, 14 have a full deletion of the gene and 48 have a partial deletion or other gross rearrangements. All patients with full deletions or gross rearrangements have severe clinical presentations. Twenty-nine different "small" mutations have so far been characterised in a total of 32 patients. These include 4 nons…

The role of glutathione in protection against DNA damage induced by rifamycin SV and copper(II) ions.

1993

Incubation of calf thymus DNA in the presence of rifamycin SV induces a decrease in the absorbance of DNA at 260 nm. The effect, was found to be proportional to the antibiotic concentration and enhanced by copper(II) ions. In the presence of rifamycin SV and copper(II), a significant increase in thiobarbituric acid-reactive (TBA-reactive) material is also observed. This effect is inhibited to different degrees by the following antioxidants: catalase 77%; thiourea 72%; glutathione (GSH) 62%; ethanol 52%; and DMSO 34%, suggesting that both hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxyl radicals (OH.) are involved in DNA damage. Rifamycin SV-copper(II) mixtures were also found to induce the production …

DETECTION LIMITS FOR NATURAL CIRCULAR-DICHROISM OF CHIRAL COMPLEXES IN THE X-RAY RANGE

1993

Whereas both Magnetic Circular Dichroism and Faraday Rotation studies have been successfully carried out at the K-, L- and M-absorption edges of metal atoms in ferromagnetic systems, Natural optical activity of chiral complexes has not yet been detected quite unambiguously in the X-ray range. We review a number of theoretical arguments which confirm that the optical asymmetry factor gσ should be very small in the X-ray range for unoriented powdered samples, especially at the K-absorption edges. This stimulating challenge prompted us to start an intensive programme of measurements aimed at detecting natural circular dichroism in both the soft and “firm” X-ray ranges. Although some of our ex…

Pourquoi la science économique redécouvre les activités d'éducation ?

1993

The high level in public deficit and the preeminence of supply side ideas in the economic thought converge for introducing a debate on educational financing. The aim of education activities is also more and more confronted with the rise of youth unemployment. But on the other side, the challenge for a nation to participate in the new global economy emphasizes the place of human capital and the correlation between competitiveness, and the distribution of general knowledge in the population. This text deals first with some factual elements. On one hand, it provides a comparative approach among rich nations, on the other hand, it deals with a historical approach of the French case. In a second…

The Measurement of Enzyme Activities in the Resting Human Polymorphonuclear Leukocyte — Critical Estimate of a Method

1993

As a system for study, the isolated human polymorphonuclear leukocyte combines the advantages of a quasi-non-invasive preparation with a nearly complete complement of enzymes of carbohydrate and energy metabolism. However, small sample volumes and, in some cases, very low enzyme activities make high demands on sample processing, storage, and performance of continuous measurements, if the enzyme activities are to be measured with acceptable reproducibility. In the presented study several aspects of homogenization, storage, and continuous measurement were scrutinized, to identify critical steps and consider ways of optimizing the method. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes were separated from the bl…

The Harderian Gland of the Djungarian Hamster (<i>Phodopus sungorus</i>): Light- and Electron-Microscopical Investigations

1993

The Harderian gland of the Djungarian hamster Phodopus sungorus was investigated by light and electron microscopy in adult animals of both sexes, held under either long or short photoperiods. These glands have a tubuloalveolar structure. Epithelial cells were seen as small cylindric cells with a large, round nucleus located basally, many small vacuoles distributed throughout the cytoplasm (type I cells) or as rather broad cells with larger vacuoles (type II cells). The ratio of both cell types differed from 1:1 to 2:1 (type I:type II), regardless of the animal’s sex. In the electron microscope, abundant smooth endoplasmic reticulum of the vesicular type and rod-like or oval-shaped mitochond…

Relationships between mixis in Brachionus plicatilis and preconditioning of culture medium by crowding

1993

Several experiments with Brachionus plicatilis have been conducted to test the existence of chemical-mediated induction of mixis. In a first experimental set, bioassays were used to test relationships between preconditioning of culture medium to high population density and the occurrence of mixis in mass cultures with these media. The results show that a preconditioned medium has inducing properties that are comparable to the crowding effect.

Gauge-invariant 4-gluon vertex and its ward identity

1993

We use the S-matrix pinch technique to construct at one-loop order a four-gluon vertex for QCD, which is independent of the choice of the gauge parameter, when one or more of the incoming momenta are off shell. We discuss some of the technical subtleties in the application of the pinch technique and show that this vertex satisfies a very simple Ward identity, relating it to a previously constructed gauge-independent three-gluon vertex, also found with the same technique. This analysis serves as a prelude to the construction of an effective potential for QCD, which is gauge-independent order by order in the dressed-loop expansion.

Phonon Softening and Electron-Phonon Interaction in YBa2Cu3O7−δ

1993

We report on the Raman scattering investigation of the 335 cm−1 phonon of Ag (pseudo-B1g) symmetry in thin YBa2Cu3O7−δfilms on various substrates. The experiments yield values for the phonon softening below Tc, which differ from sample to sample. We find a linear relation between the softening and the inverse asymmetry parameter of the phonon Fano-like lineshape, when these parameters, obtained from different samples, are compared with each other. In contrast to this, the onset temperatures for the softening are the same for these samples.

Significance and relevance of serum preS1 antigen detection in wild-type and variant hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections

1993

These studies assessed whether the serum expression of preS1 antigen could be a useful HBV marker for monitoring the progress of antiviral therapy in the treatment of chronic active hepatitis B (CAH-B) virus infections. Our findings indicate that: 1) the rearrangements we observed in the preS region of mutated HBV DNA molecules during chronic infection did not effect the preS1 sequence (21–47) critical for HBV infectivity; 2) the persistence or even the rebound of preS1 antigen expression during follow-up in responders to antiviral therapy may indicate virus persistence, suggesting the possibility of relapse through wild-type HBV or the emergence of HBV variants following the immunoeliminat…

Biology tells us about the processes and mechanisms which are able to explain effectively the changes occurring in organisms and species. Palaeontology, with the temporal dimension at its disposal, adds to this data which are indispensable for our understanding of speciation and of the patterns and rhythms of evolutionary change. Only through this we are able to observe the historical development of the evolution, of the living world as it took place through geological time. Based on data obtained from other branches of the earth sciences, palaeontology is able to evaluate the external constraints which frequently act at random on the living organism and which control the formation of new s…
