ChemInform Abstract: Monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett Multilayers of Discotic Liquid Crystals?
1990
The field of monolayer and multilayer films of discotic LCs is at its very beginning. The scope and limitations of this preparation method have not yet been explored, and little is known about the structures obtainable. However, the potential access to extraordinary, ordered thin films is fascinating, and will stimulate research in the future.
Seducin, male sex pheromone of the cockroachNauphoeta cinerea: Isolation, identification, and bioassay.
1990
The male sex pheromone of the cockroachNauphoeta cinerea was isolated from adult sternal glands and identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. This pheromone, which attracts females from a distance, is a multicomponent blend. It is composed principally of three compounds: 3-hydroxy-2-butanone (acetoin), 2-methylthiazolidine, and 4-ethyl-2-meth-oxyphenol. A mixture of synthetic compounds in a ratio of 4∶4∶1 (2700 ng) elicits maximal response and short latency of response by receptive females, similar to that induced by male sternal gland extracts. Tested separately, each compound induces a positive response, but the moving times spent by females are generally longer than with the mi…
Role of statistical fluctuations in the emission ofδelectrons from dissipative heavy-ion collisions
1990
Energy spectra of {delta} electrons emitted in coincidence with deep-inelastic heavy-ion collisions are calculated within a Langevin Monte Carlo description using the surface-friction model. We investigate the effects that wipe out the originally expected oscillatory pattern of the spectra. Emphasis is placed on the role of statistical fluctuations in extracting interaction time distributions of deep-inelastic collisions from the measured {delta}-electron spectra. The calculations are compared to data for U+Au at 8.65 MeV/nucleon.
Combined main chain/side chain polymers. A new class of liquid crystalline polymers with unusual structural, thermodynamic and dynamic properties
1990
Abstract Combined main chain/side chain polymers carry rigid rod-like mesogenic units both in the side chain and along the chain backbone. The properties of such combined systems are expected to be controlled by the competition of the interactions between the mesogenic units in the side and main chains as well as the tendency of the chain backbones to maximize their entropy. The thermodynamic, structural and dynamic properties of such combined main chain/side chain liquid-crystalline polymers were investigated for various chain architectures. The combined systems were found to display properties corresponding in many cases to a favourable superposition of properties characteristic of both m…
Comparative analysis of the composition of two chlorophyll-b-containing light-harvesting complexes.
1990
The major light-harvesting complexes from Mantoniella squamata (Prasinophyceae) and from Chlorella fusca (Chlorophyceae) were analyzed with respect to polypeptide composition and pigmentation. It was found that the polypeptides of Mantoniella are smaller than those of Chlorella and bind twice the amount of pigment. We assume that the amount of pigment per polypeptide is of ecological as well as of taxonomical importance.
Lepton physics versus neutrino mass
1990
Abstract The relationship between the strength of lepton flavour violating processes and the magnitude of the neutrino mass is rather model dependent. I review this question within different neutrino mixing models including superstring inspired models. Processes such as μ → e + γ , μ → 3 e , μ - e conversion in nuclei, etc. as well as lepton flavour violating Z ° decays can occur even if the physical neutrinos are strictly massless. As a result, the corresponding rates are unconstrained by bounds on the neutrino mass that follow from laboratory, astrophysics and cosmology and can therefore be large. Leptonic CP violation may also occur even when the physical neutrinos are strictly massless.

Microtubule distribution in gravitropic protonemata of the mossCeratodon
1990
Tip cells of dark-grown protonemata of the moss Ceratodon purpureus are negatively gravitropic (grow upward). They possess a unique longitudinal zonation: (1) a tip group of amylochloroplasts in the apical dome, (2) a plastid-free zone, (3) a zone of significant plastid sedimentation, and (4) a zone of mostly non-sedimenting plastids. Immunofluorescence of vertical cells showed microtubules distributed throughout the cytoplasm in a mostly axial orientation extending through all zones. Optical sectioning revealed a close spatial association between microtubules and plastids. A majority (two thirds) of protonemata gravistimulated for > 20 min had a higher density of microtubules near the lowe…
Alkylumlagerungen und acidolyse der ethylidenbrücken bei der synthese von ethylidendiphenolen
1990
For the synthesis of symmetrical and unsymmetrical ethylidenediphenols the corresponding hydroxyphenylethanols (1a–c) were prepared by hydrogenation of hydroxyphenyl methyl ketones with hydrogen/Raney nickle or with lithium aluminium hydride. Condensations of the hydroxyphenylethanols with different phenols under the usual acidic conditions gave products formally resulting form transalkylations. Only the reaction of 1-(3-bromo-2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)ethanol (1c) with p-cresol gave the expected product 2d with 82% yield. Experiments with ethylidenediphenols showed that with acids in presence or absence of phenols cleavage and recondensations take place leading to products of formal transal…
A multi-temporal study of chlorophyll-a concentration in the Albufera lagoon of Valencia, Spain, using Thematic Mapper data
1990
Abstract A multi-temporal study of chlorophyll-a concentration, has been made by means of Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) band 1 (0·45-0·52μm) in the Albufera of Valencia, a hypertrophic lagoon of shallow depth. The relationship between this parameter and satellite data was set up from in situ measurements and concurrent satellite data obtained in a campaign from 22 July 1985. This relation has been applied to images of different dates by using a simple procedure of correction, which is based on the use of selected surfaces whose ground reflectance is assumed to be constant with time. Good results were obtained and chlorophyll-a concentrations have been determined with an error of 20 per cen…
The cGMP-gated channel of the rod photoreceptor — a new type of channel structure?
1990
Recents findings from Numa's laboratory reveal that there might exist a wider variety in channel protein structure than originally anticipated. Recently, the cloning has been reported of the first cGMP-gated ion channel, the vertebrate rod photoreceptor which is activated by cGMP acting from the inside of the rod outer segment membrane
Effects of Ca2+ entry blockers on CaCl2-, KCl- and noradrenaline-induced contractions of goat cerebral arteries
1990
Abstract The effects of three Ca 2+ entry blockers, nicardipine, nimodipine and verapamil, on CaCl 2 -, KCl- and noradrenaline-induced contractions were examined in isolated goat middle cerebral artery. The relationship between the effects of Ca 2+ entry blockers and the extracellular Ca 2+ dependence of the contractions was also examined. In ‘nominally’ Ca 2+ -free medium, addition of CaCl 2 induced concentration-dependent contractions of previously depolarized arteries. Withdrawal of Ca 2+ from the extracellular medium caused strong inhibition of the KCl- and noradrenaline-induced arterial contractions. Addition of EGTA to the Ca 2+ -free medium almost abolished the noradrenaline-response…
Seasonality of two gill monogeneans from two freshwater fish from an oligotrophic lake in northeast Finland.
1990
The seasonal occurrence of Dactylogyrus amphibothrium and Discocotyle sagittata from the gills of ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus) and whitefish (Coregonus acronius), respectively was studied in Lake Yli-Kitka, a large oligotrophic lake in Northeast Finland. The lake, located near the Arctic Circle, is ice-covered for 7-8 months of the year. The prevalence of D. amphibothrium infection was 70.7% and remained high throughout all size-classes of fish. The length distribution and developmental stages of the worms indicated two generations per year. The overwintering generation produces a summer generation which lives for only a few weeks and matures in July. Discocotyle sagittata has only one gen…
Die lokale Fibrinolyse bei Nierenarterienverschlüssen
1990
The indications and technique of local fibrinolysis therapy of acute renal artery occlusions are discussed in relation to four patients. Because of the short period for which ischaemia is tolerated by the kidney, the result of treatment depends largely on the time interval between occlusion and the beginning of treatment. Partial perfusion of the renal artery was obtained in three patients. Since the "ischaemia time" of the kidneys had been exceeded, it was not possible to obtain complete restitution of renal function in any of these patients.
HLA-B8,DR3 phenotype and lymphocyte responses to phytohaemagglutinin.
1990
Several reports have shown that HLA-B8,DR3 positive subjects may display some changes in immune parameters when compared with HLA-B8,DR3 negative ones and are prone to develop several immunological diseases. In the present study we have analysed the proliferative response to phytohaemagglutin (PHA) in HLA-typed healthy subjects. A twin method was also employed to assess the role of genetic and environmental factors in the regulation of the response to the mitogen. It was not possible to demonstrate any difference in proliferative response to optimal doses of PHA between groups of subjects carrying or not carrying the HLA-B8,DR3 phenotype. When suboptimal responses were studied, however, the…
Electromagnetically generated extracorporeal shockwaves for fragmentation of extra-and intrahepatic bile duct stones: indications, success and proble…
1990
Electromagnetically generated extracorporeal shock waves (without waterbath) were applied after intravenous premedication with 10-15 mg diazepam and 100 mg tramadol in the treatment of 33 patients (aged 32 to 91 years) with multiple intrahepatic stones (n = 4) or huge common bile duct stones (n = 29, 18-30 mm in diameter), which could not be removed by conventional endoscopy. Stone disintegration was achieved in 70% of common bile duct stones and in all intrahepatic concrements after 800-7500 discharges, which were applied during one (n = 21), two (n = 6) or three sessions (n = 6). Apart from mild fleabite-like petechiae at the side of shock wave transmission no other side effects were obse…
Considerations concerning the renormalization of the electroweak sector of the standard model
1990
Abstract Examination of the structure of one-loop corrected amplitudes for arbitrary processes mediated by W, Z and γ in the simple renormalization framework previously discussed by the author, leads to natural choices for the renormalized self-energies and vertex corrections. They satisfy simple renormalization conditions and, as q2 → 0, the W and Z propagators approach the free expressions with a correction of O(αq2/mW2). The renormalization conditions allow us to circumvent certain ambiguities that arise, to O(α2), in current analyses of Δr and κ(q2). A useful simplified form for the Z propagator is presented.

Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography of proteins and polypeptides on polystyrene-coated silica supports
1990
Abstract A new type of hydrolytically stable reversed-phase packing material prepared by multi-point covalent binding of polystyrene chains onto the surface of porous silica was examined in the high-performance liquid chromatography of proteins and polypeptides. Whereas wide-pore material was shown to give a rapid and efficient resolution of proteins, packings with smaller pores provided better selectivities for peptides.
Can female preference explain sexual dichromatism in the pied flycatcher, Ficedula hypoleuca?
1990
How important female choice is for the evolution of male secondary sexual characteristics is controversial. Two field and one laboratory experiment, using the pied flycatcher, were performed to test the female choice aspect of sexual selection. In addition, non-manipulative data from 5 years are presented. The observational data suggest a slight preference for dark males by females but in field experiments in which males had territories at random sites (i.e. they did not choose a territory) or the colour of concurrently arriving males was altered, there was no preference for darker ones. Similarly, oestradiol-treated females did not prefer black or brown males in the laboratory. Thus, there…
Synthesis, Characterisation, and Reactivity of 1-(1-Methylimidazol-2-yl)ethenes
1990
Abstract Thermally labile 1-(1-methylimidazol-2-yl)-ethenes, synthesised using the Wittig reaction, have been characterised as stable picrate or N-phenacyl salts. The free bases can be regenerated from the picrates on treatment with triethylamine and their reactivity with dienophiles is described.
The role of the hypothalamic paraventricular nuclei for the regulation of pineal melatonin synthesis: New aspects derived from the vasopressin-defici…
1990
Abstract There is evidence for an involvement of the hypothalamic paraventricular nuclei (PVN) in the regulation of pineal melatonin synthesis in rats. Since electrical stimulation of the PVN or the systemic administration of arginine-vasopressin (AVP) result in a depression of the nocturnal melatonin surge, this neuropeptide appears to be pivotal for the transduction of PVN-efferent, pinealopetal signals. We therefore used an AVP-deficient animal model, the Brattleboro rat, to further investigate the mechanisms responsible for pineal regulation. Anesthetized adult male animals received 2 min of bilateral electrical stimulation of the PVN either during the day or at night. Thirty min later,…
Studies in organic mass spectrometry.VIII. The electron impact mass spectra of 2,4-substituted-3-diazo-5-phenylpyrroles
1990
The electron impact mass spectra (75 eV) of the β-diazopyrroles always show the molecular ions and undergo as the main fragmentation process the elimination of nitrogen followed by ring opening reactions leading to benzonitrile either as neutral or charged species. The peaks at 26 amu below the molecular ions, which are a general feature of these spectra, are due to the presence of the corresponding pyrroles which are formed by reductive reactions during the vaporization process of the samples.

Neutral heavy lepton signatures at the Z0 peak
1990
Abstract Gauge singlet Neutral Heavy Leptons (NHL) arise in many extensions of the standard electroweak theory such as superstring inspired models and their existence may be related to the observed smallness of the neutrino masses. Existing limits on such particles are still fairly poor. A brief discussion is given of the signatures arising from their production through Z 0 → N + ν or Z 0 → N + ν and their subsequent decays within different models. Taking into account the expected luminosities and typical detector efficiencies of the different LEP/SLC experiments one concludes that these may either discover isosinglets or else substantially improve and extend present limits on their mass an…
A study of thin surface layers by multilayer Mössbauer spectroscopy /MMS/
1990
A stacking Mossbauer technique, MMS has been applied for studying thin surface layers. The surface layers formed on the57Fe film in aqueous solutions of corrosion inhibitors, such as zinc phosphate and barium metaborate, and in distilled water was studied by this method. It has been found that the corrosion is much slower in the presence of zinc phosphate and barium metaborate. XPS analysis suggests the formation of a mixed iron zinc phosphate on the surface of the57Fe film after corrosion in a zinc phosphate solution.
Endometrial carcinoma and its precursors: Early detection and treatment
1990
Endometrial carcinoma is the most frequent genital neoplasia in women. Precursors of this condition include endometrial hyperplasia, particularly when cytologic atypia occurs. Among the frequent early clinical manifestations of endometrial carcinoma is abnormal uterine bleeding that must be differentiated from bleeding associated with benign conditions. Early detection of endometrial carcinoma and its precursors in women at risk is the best prophylactic measure in the final therapeutic outcome. In this review, the accuracy of methods of early diagnosis of endometrial carcinoma and its precursors is assessed, in order to provide early therapy and optimum prognosis. The epidemiology of endome…
Polyclonal antibodies to mannan from yeast also recognize the carbohydrate structure of gp120 of the AIDS virus: an approach to raise neutralizing an…
1990
This study initiates a new method of developing an antigen which might be useful in the prevention of HIV-1 infection. Using a mannan preparation from Saccharomyces cerevisiae neutralizing antiserum was raised in rabbits which prevents HIV-1 infection in vitro up to a titre of 1:128. The corresponding antibody preparation neutralized the in vitro infectivity down to a concentration of 5 micrograms/ml. Analytical studies suggest that the antibodies are directed against the mannose residues of the HIV-1 glycoprotein (gp) 120 and its precursor gp 160.
The Effect of Phosphinothricin (Glufosinate) on Glutathione Synthesis in Plants
1990
The inhibitory effect of DL-phosphinothricin (glufosinate) on glutathione synthesis was studied in vivo and in vitro. The influence of phosphinothricin on γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase was compared with the already known effects of l-buthionine sulfoximine and l-methionine sulfoximine. The results showed that phosphinothricin and buthionine sulfoximine are inhibitors of γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase of plants. With both substances the enzyme was inhibited by 50 % at a concentration of 7 . 10−4M (pI50 = 3.15). Methionine sulfoximine reduced the enzyme activity by 50% at 5 . 10−2 M (pI50 = 1.30). It is discussed that the target enzyme of phosphinothricin is the glutamine synthetase whereas th…

Volumes and compressibilities of pentanol in aqueous dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide solutions at 15, 25 and 35°C
1990
Ultrasonic velocities and densities of the water-dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB)-pentanol (PentOH) ternary system were measured at 15, 25 and 35°C as a function of the surfactant and alcohol concentrations. The apparent molar volumes and isentropic compressibilities of PentOH were calculated. The standard partial molar volumes increase with surfactant concentration continuously whereas the standard partial molar isentropic compressibilities show sharp changes in slope at about 0.25 mol-kg−1 DTAB, which can be ascribed to a micellar structural transition. The volume data for alcohol in micellar solutions were treated by a model reported for the distribution of polar additives between…
Glycogen phosphorylase in fish muscle: demonstration of three interconvertible forms
1990
White skeletal muscle of crucian carp contains a single isoenzyme of glycogen phosphorylase, which was purified approximately 300-fold to a specific activity of approximately 13 mumol.min-1.mg protein-1 (assayed in the direction of glycogen breakdown at 25 degrees C). Tissue extracts of crucian muscle produced three distinct peaks of phosphorylase activity when separated on DEAE-Sephacel. Peaks 1 and 3 were identified, in terms of kinetic properties and by interconversion experiments, as phosphorylase b and a, respectively. Peak 2 was shown to be a phospho-dephospho hybrid. The three interconvertible forms of phosphorylase were purified and shown to be dimeric molecules at 20 degrees C. At …
Enhancement of sensitivity in high-resolution stimulated Raman spectroscopy of gases: Applicaion to the 2ν2 (1285 cm−1) band of CO2
1990
The application of a multiple-pass gas cell to quasi-cw stimulated Raman scattering is demonstrated to be a powerful method for significantly increasing the sensitivity. As a consequence, such a device offers the possibility of working in the 0.1–1 Torr pressure range for weak bands. As a striking example, experimental results are given for the 2ν2 band of CO2 at 1285 cm−1. The band is almost completely resolved with a very good signal-to-noise ratio. The Raman frequencies and the collisional broadening coefficients are determined as a function of quantum number J. Moreover, the possibility of auto-stimulated Raman effect on CO2 at moderate pressure via the sharp ν1 band (1388 cm−1) is demo…
Melatonin binding sites in brain of the 2-day-old chicken: An autoradiographic localisation
1990
Melatonin, released in a circadian manner from the avian pineal gland into the circulation, is concentrated in distinct brain areas, possibly by receptor-mediated uptake mechanisms. For anatomical localisation of putative melatonin receptors in birds, cryostat-cut, coronal 15 microns brain sections of 2-day-old chicken were investigated by means of in vitro receptorautoradiography, using 125I-melatonin as a ligand. Binding occurred in brain structures receiving or mediating visual or auditory sensory input. Binding characteristics were investigated in homogenates of a brain region labelled by 125I-melatonin and showed to be specific and saturable (Kd: 87.2 pM; Bmax: 16.1 fmol/mg protein). R…
orthoeffect on the nitrosation of the 2,3-diphenyl-5(2-methoxyphenyl)pyrrole
1990
A comparison of the behaviour on the nitrosation of the isomers 5-(2-methoxyphenyl)- (1a) 5-(3-methoxyphenyl)- (1b) and 5-(4-methoxyphenyl)2,3-diphenylpyrroles (1c) carried out in the usual way with iso-amyl nitrite in a solution of sodium ethoxide in ethanol evidences that 1a is dramatically less reactive with respect to 1b and 1c. The different reactivity was ascribed to the occurrence of a strong hydrogen bond involving pyrrole NH and the ortho-methoxy group.
