Nonexponential 2H spin-lattice relaxation as a signature of the glassy state
1990
Abstract High-precision measurements of 2H spin-lattice relaxation on several molecular glass-forming liquids have been performed. As a general feature the following can be stated: At temperatures more than ten to twenty degrees above the calorimetric glass transition temperature Tg the 2H spin-lattice relaxation is exponential; below that temperature regime the relaxation is nonexponential. This crossover from exponential to nonexponential magnetization recovery implies that no common spin temperature caused by spin diffusion exists in a 2H glass. This contrasts 1H spin-lattice relaxation which is found to be strictly monoexponential throughout. The occurrence of nonexponential 2H relaxati…
Short term diet of precooked corn meal almost lacking in tryptophan and interspecific rat-mouse aggressive behaviour.
1990
The content of tryptophan in a precooked corn meal and in 4 types of selected corn seeds: Zea mays indurata, identata, opaque/2 and Marano synth., has been determined by three different methods: ion-exchange chromatography, spectrofluorometry and spectrophotometry. This content is very low, less than 0.080% d.w. Alimentation for 4 d with a diet composed of precooked corn meal with a tryptophan content less than 0.025% induced the appearance of aggressive-cidal or aggressive non-cidal behaviour towards the mouse in more than half of Wistar rats bred in a room constantly lighted by a sodium steam light. The appearance of this behaviour is probably connected with a decrease in brain serotonin.
Role of endothelium and calcium channels in endothelin-induced contraction of human cerebral arteries
1990
Endothelin constricted human isolated cerebral arteries in a concentration-dependent manner. The maximal tension developed, as well as EC50 values were similar in arteries with and without endothelium. Removal of extracellular calcium or addition of the calcium antagonist nicardipine (10(-6)M), attenuated but did not abolish responses to endothelin. These experiments show that the endothelin-induced contraction in human cerebral arteries is not linked to the presence of intact endothelial cells. The data also show that the contractile effects of endothelin cannot be explained solely by an action on voltage-dependent calcium channels.
Mass spectra of halogenated esters. Part IX—methyl esters of 2-butenoic acids containing chlorine and/or bromine atom(s)
1990
The electron impact mass spectra of methyl esters of chloro-, bromo-, dichloro-, bromochloro- and dibromo-2-butenoic acids (13 esters at all) have been investigated. Generally, the peaks due to the following fragments are abundant: M+·, [M OCH3]+, [M CH3OH]+·, [M X]+, [M OCH3 CO]+ or [M COOCH3]+, [M X CH3OH]+ or [M OCH3 HX]+, [M OCH3 CO HX]+, [M OCH3 X X]+ and [M OCH3 CO X X]+. Characteristic for the 2- and 4-halo isomers are the primary losses of a methyl radical and methanol, and for the 3-halo isomers the loss of X· from M+·. Disparities between the spectra of the E and Z isomers are shown, the effect of position of halogen substitution being much more pronounced, as reported previously …
Synthetic approaches to new polymers
1990
A plenary lecture should be an introduction into the main topic of the symposium and a review about the state of art. Therefore, in the first part of this presentation different possibilities for the preparation of new polymers are briefly discussed from a chemical point of view. Some selected examples from the literature show how methods of organic chemistry can be utilized for polymer science: new catalytic systems, new monomers, modification of polymers, new poly-reactions. In the second part, several polyelectrolytes are described: polymers with sec., tert. and quart. N-atoms in the main chain, block copolymers and block polyampholytes. The third part deals with the problems of rod-like…
Clinical and haemodynamic effects of ketanserin in lean and obese hypertensive patients.
1990
Systemic and central haemodynamics were evaluated in 10 lean and 10 obese hypertensive patients (World Health Organization stage I – II) after treatment for 8 weeks with a serotoninergic antagonist, such as ketanserin. Blood pressure and heart rate were recorded and first-pass radionuclide angiocardiography was performed to determine cardiac output, cardiac index and ejection fraction of the left ventricle; total peripheral resistance was also calculated. In both obese and lean patients, ketanserin significantly reduced diastolic ( P < 0.05) and mean ( P < 0.005) blood pressure but no significant changes in systolic blood pressure, cardiac output, cardiac index and ejection fraction …
Present status of Phytophthora species in the Mediterranean area, especially in relation to citrus
1990
Of the 44 currently accepted species of Phytophthora, 18 have been reported in the Mediterranean area. The status of each is briefly reviewed. On citrus, P. citrophthora and P. nicotianae var. parasitica are mainly responsible for foot rot and gummosis, and in addition P. hibernalis, P. syringae, P. cifricola and P. cactorum for brown rot of fruits. The incidence of these species is closely linked to their temperature requirements. The use of sour orange as a resistant rootstock has long provided satisfactory control of foot rot and gummosis, while chemical treatments are effective against brown rot. However, there are indications that, with changingcultural practices, the resistance of sou…
Functional characterization of Tat protein from human immunodeficiency virus. Evidence that Tat links viral RNAs to nuclear matrix.
1990
The processes of transcription and posttranscription are assumed to proceed in close association with the nuclear matrix. In this study we demonstrated that Tat, the trans-activating protein from human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), binds both to the TAR region of the nascent HIV mRNAs and the nuclear matrix with high affinity. Both North/Western blotting experiments and nitrocellulose binding studies revealed that Tat binds with an association constant (K alpha) of approximately 1 x 10(9) M-1 to the TAR segment of HIV RNA; binding of Tat to this sequence which is present between position 32 and 82 downstream from the TATA box was also confirmed by gel retardation assays. Binding of…
E0 suppression in pion photoproduction on 13C
1990
Abstract Recently measured anomalously low cross sections for 13 C(γ, π − ) 13 N at low energy and θ π lab = 90° 0761 have been analyzed in a DWIA calculation. It has been found that the EO contribution alone is able to explain the data, so that the M1 cross section is expected to vanish. Using constraints from recent magnetic electron scattering, an explanation is possible by assuming a significantly lower reduced density matrix element for spin-flip isovector transitions with angular momentum L = 2 than predicted by Cohen and Kurath.

The countercurrent extraction method recently developed for the continuous polymer fractionation (CPF) was applied to linear polyethylene (Mw = 55 kg/mol; Mn = 16,7 kg/mol). At temperatures higher than 130°C, moderately concentrated solution of polyethylene were extracted to remove the low-molecular-weight components. Discontinuous fractionation experiments served to detect the best suited solvents. Diphenyl ether was chosen to demonstrate that the present extraction can be performed even with the same single solvent used to prepare the feed. For very high-molecular-weight polymers, mixed solvents are, however, normally better than single ones, since they allow an easier tailoring of thermo…
The γ5-problem and anomalies — A Clifford algebra approach
1990
Abstract It is shown that a strong correspondence between noncyclicity and anomalies exists. This allows, by fundamental properties of Clifford algebras, to build a simple and consistent scheme for treating γ 5 without using ( d −4)-dimensional objects
Analysis of the CIPSI/DCCI approach to characterize the HF AND F2 single bond
1990
Abstract The aim of the present work is to account for the main differential correlation contributions occurring during the bond breaking process of HF and F2 molecules in an accurate and inexpensive way. Starting from the dissociation-consistent configuration interaction (DCCI) scheme by Goddard and co-workers the corresponding contributions are evaluated within the framework reported by Malrieu and co-workers, namely configuration interaction by perturbation with multiconfigurational zeroth-order wavefunction selected by iterative process (CIPSI). In addition, the DCCI scheme has been improved by introducing the dispersion effects associated with the valence MOs adjacent to the bond. The …
Diabetes and coronary risk factors. Relative risk for single factors and aggregation of more factors in a general population sample from northern Ita…
1990
In the course of a general population survey in Mirano (Venice), Northern Italy, a random sample of 1,903 subjects (50.1% men) aged 20-59 was examined. Fifty-five were diabetic (fasting plasma glucose greater than or equal to 140 mg/dl or diagnosed by a physician) and 1,670 non-diabetic subjects (fasting plasma glucose below 110 mg/dl). In this paper an assessment was made on the more frequent occurrence of coronary risk factors (serum cholesterol and triglycerides, body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure, cigarette smoking) and, in particular, of their aggregation in diabetic patients as compared to non-diabetic controls. The occurrence of any one of the coronary risk factors studie…
Measurement of various decay modes of charmed particlesD 0,D +,D s + andΛ s c
1990
In the CERN NA 32 experiment a high-resolution silicon vertex detector and a purely topological approach have been used to investigate various decays of charmed particles. We observe ∼620 fully reconstructed decays ofD0 in 12 channels and determine the branching ratios. For fourD0 decay modes involving a single (unseen) π0 the small and narrowD*+−D0 mass difference is used to measure their branching ratios. We also observe ∼280 fully reconstructedD+ decays in 10 channels, ∼90Ds+ decays in 11 channels as well as 160Λsc and 18 decay channels ofD+. For theDs+, we measure the branching fractions within a subset of 16 three- and five-prong decay channels. For theΛsc, we determine the branching f…

Exclusive semileptonic heavy meson decays including lepton mass effects
1990
We discuss the exclusive semi-leptonic (s.l.) bottom meson decaysB→D(D*)+l+v where we include non-zero lepton mass effects in the kinematics and dynamics. We develop the general formalism for the non-zero lepton mass case. We then look at how rates, spectra and angular correlations are affected by non-zero lepton masses in the context of a specific spectator quark model. Numerical results are presented for s.l. decays involving thee-, μ- and τ-leptons. We also discuss the s.l. decaysB→π(ρ),D→K(K*) and the free quark decay model.
Oral tegafur in the treatment of gastrointestinal tract cancers: a phase II study.
1990
Fifty patients affected by histologically confirmed gastrointestinal tract cancer (GTC) were treated with oral tegafur (TG) 1,000 mg m-2 p.o. on days 1-14 repeated after a 14 day interval. Out of 42 evaluable patients seven patients had a partial response (PR. 17%) with a median duration of 20.5 weeks, three had a minimal response (7%) with a median duration of 23.7 weeks, nine showed a stabilisation which lasted a median of 31.3 weeks, and 23 progressed (55%). No response was obtained in patients affected by carcinoma of the pancreas and the hepatobiliary system. All PRs were achieved in patients with metastatic disease to the liver. No response was seen in patients with bone, lung or noda…
Ellipsometric thickness and coverage of physisorbed layers of Xe, Kr, Ar and N2 on graphite
1990
Multilayer isotherms of Xe, Kr, Ar and N2 physisorbed on graphite (001) have been studied by ellipsometry. It is shown that the model of Dignam and Fedyk provides an excellent basis for the interpretation of the ellipsometric thickness in terms of the coverage and the polarizability of the admolecules. For N2 conclusions concerning the orientation of the molecule are drawn.
Spontaneous electromechanical activity in the rat duodenumin vitro
1990
Isolated rat duodenum shows spontaneous mechanical and electrical activities. Mechanical activity consists in changes both in endoluminal pressure and in isometric tension. Electrical activity is characterized by slow waves with superimposed bursts. This spontaneous activity is tetrodotoxin (TTX) resistant and therefore it is myogenic in origin. Indeed, TTX pretreatment, even in the presence of atropine and guanethidine, caused an increase in amplitude and in frequency of the electrical and mechanical activities. This finding indicates the presence of tonically active inhibitory intramural non adrenergic, non cholinergic (NANC) nerves. Duodenal longitudinal strips showed a spontaneous mecha…
Intraepidermal formation of Merkel cells in xenografts of human fetal skin.
1990
An experimental transplantation model using human fetal skin was applied to approach the question of the embryologic origin of human Merkel cells. Palmar and plantar skin from five fetuses, between 8 and 11 weeks of estimated gestational age (EGA), was xenografted to subcutaneous beds of nude mice. After 4 or 8 weeks of growth, biopsies were taken from these xenografts and examined for the presence of Merkel cells, using immunocytochemistry with antibodies specific for simple epithelial-type cytokeratins and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) as well as using electron microscopy. Skin from the same fetuses at the time of transplantation was screened in the same way. In all fetuses, no (or very s…
Home atmosphere and adolescent future orientation
1990
Adolescent future orientation was studied from the point of view of orienting expectations about the future, consisting of three aspects: cognitive (clarity of plans for the use of future time), affective (optimistic vs pessimistic attitudes toward the future), and motivational (realistic vs unrealistic wishes for the future). The study was part of the Jyvaskyla Longitudinal Study of Social Development, the original sample for which consisted of 8-year-old subjects. Follow-up studies were made using a semistructured interview covering several aspects of home atmosphere (child-rearing and external home conditions) and youthful life orientation at ages 14 and 20 with 115 subjects. Results obt…
Different response of TH1 cells for stimulation with anti-CD3 antibodies.
1990
In this report, evidence is provided for a further subdivision of CD4+ T helper cell lines. The earlier definition of the TH1 and TH2 subtypes was confirmed by their differential response to interleukin (IL) 1. An additional subdivision of the TH1 subset was revealed when TH1 cell lines were costimulated with anti-CD3 antibodies and IL2. The IL2-induced proliferation of three of the resulting TH1 lines was blocked by anti-CD3 antibodies. By contrast, no such block was observed in a fourth TH1 cell line. In all four lines anti-CD3 triggering caused production of IL2. The block of proliferation was reversed neither by antigen-presenting cells nor by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate, a protein …
Short-duration rainfalls in Sicily
1990
The Italian Hydrographic Service publishes yearly maximum rainfall depths with 1-, 3-, 6-, 12-, and 24-hr duration, recorded by recording rain gauges. It also publishes selected short-duration (t<1 hr) rainfall amounts. It is impossible to carry out a statistical analysis of the short-duration rainfalls for each recording rain gauge because the published data correspond to different record durations and to different recording rain gauges from year to year. Therefore, there is a practical need to derive empirical relationships between the 1-, 3-, 6-, 12-, and 24-hr duration amounts and shorter duration (t<1 hr) rainfall amounts. Such a relationship has been proposed by Bell and has been veri…
Environmental lighting and muricidal behaviour in the male Wistar rat.
1990
Effects of different conditions of environmental lighting on the appearance of the muricidal behaviour in male Wistar rats have been studied. The animals were kept under different conditions of environmental lighting: 1) natural day light alternated with the dark of the night; 2) sodium, continuous light emitted by a sodium steam lamp; 3) neon, continuous light emitted by fluorescent neon tubes. The continuous sodium steam light increased the percentage of animals becoming muricide when compared to animals bred in a natural environment with a normal succession of day-night lighting. On the contrary, this percentage decreased if the rats of the same group are exposed to continuous light emit…
Changing patterns of hepatitis A virus infection in children in Palermo, Italy.
1990
In 1988 in Palermo, Italy, the prevalence of antibodies to hepatitis A virus (anti-HAV) in a sample of 490 children 6-13 years old was 10.6%; it increased from 6.3% among children 6-10 years old to 14.7% in children 11-13 years old (P less than 0.01). Compared with findings from a survey conducted in 1978 in the same area, the results of the present study show a significant (P less than 0.01) reduction in the anti-HAV prevalence in both age groups. Anti-HAV prevalence was inversely related to the father's years of education and positively related to the family size. Children of fathers with less than 6 years of schooling had a 3.2-fold risk (C.I. 95% = 1.3-8.1), and children with five or mo…
Protandric hermaphrodite peculiarities in Amphiprion frenatus Brevoort (Teleostei, Pomacentridae)
1990
Electron microscopy of the male phase of the ovotestis of Amphiprion frenatus, a protandric hermaphrodite, showed no connective tissue between male and female areas and, as the basal lamina was lacking both along the seminiferous tubules and round the previtellogenic oocytes, the male and female germ cells were only separated by their respective surrounding somatic cells (Sertoli and follicle cells). Besides previtellogenic oocytes, oocytes in meiotic prophase and very small (young) previtellogenic oocytes, were detected in the ovarian part, as spermatogenesis proceeded, revealing oogenetic activity. Degeneration of some previtellogenic oocytes and their follicle cells was discernible.
On the purinergic system in rat duodenum : existence of P1and P2receptors on the smooth muscle
1990
In rat duodenum, in vitro, in the presence of atropine and guanethidine, ATP administration caused a tetrodotoxin-insensitive relaxation followed by a rebound contraction. A similar response was obtained also after electrical field stimulation (EFS) of non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic (NANC) nerves. alpha, beta-methylene-TP and theophylline antagonized the response to ATP, but they failed to affect the noradrenaline- and EFS-induced relaxation. These results suggest that P1 and P2 receptors are present in rat duodenum, but their activation is not responsible for the inhibitor effects due to the NANC nerves.
Confined quarks and the neutrinoless ββ decay
1990
Abstract The half life of the neutrinoless double beta decay of 76Ge into the ground state of 76Se is calculated in a relativistic quark confinement model. The neutron-proton quasi-particle random phase approximation is used to evaluate the nuclear matrix elements involved in the decay amplitude. We avoid the closure approximation, but compare our results with this approximation. From the experimental half life we deduce an upper limit for the Majorana mass of the neutrino and estimate the right-handed contribution to the charged weak current.
Phase behavior and elastic properties of a slightly crosslinked liquid crystalline main-chain polymer
1990
A liquid crystalline main-chain polymer was slightly crosslinked by a reaction withα, ω-difunctionalized oligo-siloxanes. Crosslinking does not disturb the liquid crystalline phases, which are identified by x-ray measurements as smecticB and smecticA phases. Measurements of the elastic properties of the crosslinked sample show rubber-like elasticity, even in the liquid crystalline phases. A difference of 7 K was found between cooling and heating for the smecticA/isotropic transition from DSC and mechanical measurements.
The quantitative determination of metabolites of 6-mercaptopurine in biological materials. VII. Chemical synthesis by phosphorylation of 6-thioguanos…
1990
Abstract A fast and reliable two-step method has been established for the chemical synthesis of 6-thioguanosine 5′-monophosphate, 6-thioguanosine 5′-diphosphate and 6-thioguanosine 5′-triphosphate starting from the ribonucleoside. In the first step, 6-thioguanosine dissolved in triethyl phosphate, at high yield reacts with phosphorus oxide trichloride to 6-thioguanosine 5′-monophosphate which is purified by anion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex using a step gradient of hydrochloric acid. In the second step, 6-thioguanosine 5′-monophosphate dissolved in water, reacts with phosphoric acid in the presence of pyridine/dicyclohexyl carbodiimide and is converted to 6-thioguanosine 5′-dip…
Blends of nylon 6 with a polyethylene functionalized by photooxidation
1990
An easy and cheap method to prepare functionalized polyethylene is reported in which polyethylene is photooxidized and then melt-blended with nylon. Structural, rheological, and mechanical modifications indicate that carbonyl, formed during photooxidation, and amine groups react giving rise to copolymers which stabilize the blends. Photooxidized polyethylene from waste could be very effective in preparing polyethylene/polyamide blends with improved properties. This new approach improves over current methods in which compatibilization of polyolefines and polyamides is mostly performed by reacting functionalized polyolefines with polyamides in molten state. The functionalization is achieved b…

Polymorphism and the glasslike state of cyanide mixed crystals: A mesoscopic problem.
1990
The martensitic aspect of the structural phase transitions of the alkali cyanides and their solid solutions with the alkali halides is discussed. It is suggested that the polymorphism is intimately connected with the problem of mesoscopic transformation strains. At intermediate CN concentrations a competition between glasslike inhomogeneous strains, modulated strains, and ferroelastic strains is observed.
